@PauloCereda if you have a large run of italic, you would italicize any brackets inside, and if such a text run just happened to have starting and ending brackets you should arguably do the same, if the brackets are part of the structure of the non italic sentence and the quoted or foreign word is inside it then they should be upright. Chances are it doesn't look great either way...

@Szabolcs do you want to scale the graphic to the page or just set the page size to the graphic size?

@DavidCarlisle The ultimate goal is: take a PDF and rescale everything, both the graphic and the page size. For example, take this (5 cm) and get this (2 cm)

I am thinking about whether this can be automated with pdfLaTeX at all.

@Szabolcs as I say for that case I'd probably just scale the pdf directly (it is a scalable format:-) but in general see my answer here, you could replace \vbox{\hsize=7.8cm by \hbox{\includegraphics.... and get a tight output page to whatever size you wanted using the includegraphics scale options.

@PauloCereda and @DavidCarlisle -- there is some sentiment that all punctuation in (italic) theorems should be upright, since they often contain math, and punctuation in math is (correctly) upright. at ams, it is preferred that parentheses around the labels on enumerated items (and in fact the entire label) be upright, although these days if an author is sloppy and leaves these italic, it isn't changed. for quoted text in italic, different guidelines may apply.

Also, we need more info about your TeX code, like engine and packages loaded -- a MWE is surely welcome. @MarekKaski just write exactly that, any editor will have some way of typing characters once you know the unicode number, I used emacs but windows lets you use the alt key and the hex number or other, or you can just enter ^^^^023e and tex will use the character

@MarekKaski -- in order for a text to be hyphenated correctly, the patterns being used have to be defined with the exact letters that will appear in the text. since you have redefined a particular letter, that letter will not be in the patterns, and any word using it will never be hyphenated correctly. you can use the "discretionary hyphen" \- in the desired location; that will be activated only if that position in that word falls at or near a line boundary.

@MarekKaski but you are mixing up two entirely different things, when editing the font you can change the glyph for a if you do that then in tex you just use a to get your new glyph and hyphenation works as before as it is a. if instead you add your new glyph as a new slot then to enter the character in tex you type that new character and then you will need to specify hyphenation for words using that new character,

@MarekKaski in your font do you have two alternative glyphs specified for the position 006b or have you made a new character in a different slot eg 023e If you have done the second then it is not an alternative glyph, it is a new character. Your question doesn't mention an edited font at all.

@JosephWright did you try that luatex emulation of xetexchar classes? see the comments here, It loads for me but the callback never fires..

that's the issue Ulrike put in a comment replace the callback register line at the end of the lua by luatexbase.add_to_callback ('token_filter', do_intertoks,"xetex chartoks emulation") then it loads without error (but doesn't work, at least in my development build of luatex, looking....) — David Carlisle 2 mins ago
