Good morning

7:02 AM
@ChristianHupfer Good morning

@Johannes_B: We meet again, at last ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Did you doubt it?
@percusse :-) I couldn't finish it.

@Johannes_B: Actually I cited from 'Star Wars', but never mind.. you're definitely too young :-P

@ChristianHupfer I never watched Star Wars, nor Star Trek (if there is any difference)
@ChristianHupfer Not because i might be too young, but just because it's soooo ..... let's say uninteresting.

@Johannes_B: We never met :-P
I deny to have ever talked to Johannes_B in chat, in reality....

7:11 AM
@ChristianHupfer :-D

@Johannes_B: Thanks, but my Italian declined rapidly since yesterday ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Just found the original -> youtube.com/watch?v=G9JfCBKnbdk

@Johannes_B: I always liked Penny, but after that line ... no longer

@ChristianHupfer Why are some people so obsessed with Star Wars?

@Johannes_B: This is a question I can't answer in general.
@Johannes_B: Some like the fights, the war
@Johannes_B: Others are fascinated by the conflict between good and dark side... as usual

7:21 AM
@ChristianHupfer The only war i know of is emacs vs vim ;-)

@Johannes_B: For me it is definitely the character of Darth Vader ... without that, Star Wars would be boring... and he is the glue for all episodes, even the bad new ones ;-)
@Johannes_B: Never heard of vim :-P

@ChristianHupfer We never met :-P
I deny to have ever talked to ChristianHupfer in chat, in reality....

@Johannes_B: I have reached my daily goal :D

@ChristianHupfer What is your daily goal?

@Johannes_B: You won't be talking to me any longer :-P

7:27 AM
But, ähm, ... err, .... lalalalala.

@Johannes_B: Joke ;-)

@ChristianHupfer lalalala
;-)

@ChristianHupfer Don't ask me why, but i like this song v

@Johannes_B: Neither heard the song nor the name of the singer before

7:40 AM
@ChristianHupfer I am not the maintream radio guy :-)

@Johannes_B: Did I say that I exclusively listen to the mainstream? ;-)

@ChristianHupfer i think you are more the 60s-music guy.

@Johannes_B: Our musical directions are separate sets, wtih no intersection with the mainstream ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Another all time favourite: youtube.com/watch?v=gOLY7bjCTTE

@Johannes_B: Nice video ... too many people in beautiful landscapes ;-)
Well, back to 'work' ;-) See you later

Ah please guys get a room :P

Tables

You can create tables by assembling a list of words and dividing them with hyphens - (for the first row), and then separating each column with a pipe |:

First Header  | Second Header
------------- | -------------
Content Cell  | Content Cell
Content Cell  | Content Cell

For aesthetic purposes, you can also add extra pipes on the ends:

| First Header  | Second Header |
| ------------- | ------------- |
| Content Cell  | Content Cell  |
| Content Cell  | Content Cell  |
Note the For aesthetic purposes... part. :P

8:49 AM
@PauloCereda It doesn't have to be purposes for good :)

9:13 AM
@percusse: LOL
I'm on my way to São Paulo. I cannot type properly, maybe I need a bigger screen.

@JosephWright Nice.

Second bus. Now, to SP. :)
Oh no, te netbook I brought has no TeX installed!

@PauloCereda epic fail

@PauloCereda: Even more tragedy than Hamlet ;-)

btw, article version 3 submitted, ugh

@PauloCereda You can do exercises in macro expansion, then. What will \show\test output with this Plain TeX input?

10:21 AM
@egreg: ooh let me try! :)

@PauloCereda for bonus pints start with \def\test{}

@DavidCarlisle Are you blaming Knuth who didn't start counting from 0?

@egreg no, blaming you for not writing sufficiently defensive macros (but shouldn't say too much as @PauloCereda's working out what happens:-)

@egreg: it looks like some sort of token list operation. The ‛\yzzyx‛ thing is defined in terms of the other macro thing, perhaps one token is eliminated from the list? Or replicated, I dunno. :)

@PauloCereda Close.

10:36 AM
ooh!
@David: nanana I got close. :P

10:48 AM
Beach time for me. :)

@percusse @percusse Thank you!

@cfr My pleasure for ... ehm... yea. You are welcome hehe
@cfr May I ask about what you thanked for ?
@JosephWright Can you please ban @PauloCereda if he refuses to be interviewed this time?

@ChristianHupfer tex.stackexchange.com/questions/194915/… <- Thought so ;-)

@DavidCarlisle David David David. It worked it worked it worked. Wohooo.
@DavidCarlisle If you are confused: it was about the tex main memory limit thingy with pgfplots and then changing first texmf.cnf which somehow f...ed things up badly because "random reason" (meaning: I do not know why--it said something about "error 14, my constants have been changed"). But then I ran my main document with LuaLaTeX which oyu suggested for a second approach and it worked.

12:58 PM
@ChristianHupfer tex.stackexchange.com/a/194923/37907 <- Why so complicated?

@Johannes_B: Thou shalt not ping me from chat, thou villain ;-)
@Johannes_B: It's just an idea... and I wanted to train my knowledge of less used commands ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Ok, that i can understand.

@Johannes_B: And I hate minipages as well as \begin{figure} environments

You are a very strange man @ChristianHupfer

@Johannes_B: As well as \mainmatter, \maketitle... rubbish commands :D
@Johannes_B: Yes, my doctor says that too :D

1:02 PM
@ChristianHupfer \documentclass usepackage etc. Never used those.

@Johannes_B: You're writing from scratch, right? :D

@ChristianHupfer Surely i do ... not ;-)

@Johannes_B: I hate \begin{figure} stuff because on a worksheet for students, a diagram should not float to some other page when it's needed right there, as well as tables ...

@ChristianHupfer You are right there. Sometimes, placing those objects by hand is important. And a minipage really comes in handy there.

@Johannes_B: Perhaps, I have not used them for years, I believe

1:11 PM
@ChristianHupfer Not even in answers here on TeX.SX?

@Johannes_B: Well, I did not use it for my real production stuff, but perhaps, once or twice here on TeX.SX ... I can't remember
@Johannes_B: I just grepped : four answers, but I believe, it is just the code by the OP provided in his./her MWE which contained minipages

@ChristianHupfer Do you save all your answers?

I have a directory called StackExchange :D
@Johannes_B: I can quickly reuse code etc.

@ChristianHupfer I have a folder for all the minimal examples. Those get modified till a usaable solution comes up. But the answer is (almost) all times not saved.
@ChristianHupfer Could have sworn it would be more.
ls *.tex | wc -l
1433

@Johannes_B: I don't get you? You have templates for MWE's there?

1:20 PM
@ChristianHupfer No, templates the OPs provide.

And most the files (1433) come from OPs?
@Johannes_B: The OP of the two-tables-question provided a screenshot--- all of my efforts were basically useless :-(

1:36 PM
@ChristianHupfer I just saw the screenshot (a piece of art, really). I dad the feeling that he wanted something like this.

@Johannes_B: I hold it as another example of an ill-posed question

@ChristianHupfer Except for some »strange, what is going on there« and some alternative solutions, yes; provided by OPs

@Johannes_B: About 470 *.tex files, but some of them are older versions ;-) So, say, about 250 effectively

@ChristianHupfer
ls *.bib | wc -l

@Johannes_B: Is this a competition? :D

1:48 PM
@ChristianHupfer Not yet ;-)

@Johannes_B: you won :D

I have at least 10 supporttabs open and 3 people chatting. I am completely lost ight now.

@Johannes_B: supporttabs?

@ChristianHupfer Tabs with a question on LaTeX. Either here, or LaTeX-community, or GoLaTeX or Texwelt

@Johannes_B: Restrict thyself to the one and only Tex Forum... TeX.SX ... Come to the dark side :D

2:02 PM
@ChristianHupfer No, won't do that.
@ChristianHupfer Do you have cookies?

2:41 PM
@ChristianHupfer well, floating environments are not the right application for every table or figure. They have their place where they (often) do a good job. In other cases a center environment is a better choice. But hating the environments? Isn't that a bit strong? ;)
@ChristianHupfer @Johannes_B if it is a competition I lose: I only have one or two test.tex which I reuse all the time. :)

@egreg @ChristianHupfer @Werner @PaulGessler @TorbjørnT. The thread "Token list with line breaks..." is badly marked as duplicate. See my last comment in this thread.

Q: How to add the total maks using probsol

user3278494I am trying to add the total marks at the end of an exam paper using probsoln. All the questions is in a seperate file and I just use \loadallproblems to add them to the exam paper. I add the number of marks for each question in the "Question File" with \marginpar{[\marklabel{2}]}. Is there any w...

@cgnieder ^^^ Should be something for you ;-)

@Johannes_B I'm not sure but I believe there is a similar question somewhere

3:40 PM
@cgnieder »Bekomme Paket "chemfig" nicht zum laufen« Das hatten wir schon mal.

@Johannes_B I remember the case where the OP had called their test file chemfig.tex but that would lead to errors...

cis
@ChristianHupfer Which kind of formular do you want to produce?

@cgnieder I don't think this is the case here.

@Johannes_B no, the OP says the file runs without errors. We need more information
At least I do

@cgnieder As usual :-)

4:04 PM
@cgnieder Have a look at the edit history of the question.

cis
4:21 PM
@Johannes_B "@cis You haven't been the first one. ;-)" Already on texwelt.de - I am the first (and the last), who introduces a media9-tag too...

@cis I think i'll never use media9 so i won't join you ;-)

cis
4:33 PM
@Johannes_B Never say never

4:44 PM
@cgnieder I guess you have a decent TL 2014 (i still don't). Can you have a look at latex-community.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=84991#p84991
@cgnieder Would be great, thanks.

5:00 PM
@Johannes_B The file list looks right to me: we've simplified the l3 stuff a lot

@JosephWright Running my example, is the output (the thanks marks) right?

@Johannes_B All fine

@JosephWright Now i am running out of ideas :-(

@Johannes_B Ah, down at the bottom they all have double daggers!
@Johannes_B Bug in fontspec?
@Johannes_B You see the same with article class

@JosephWright As i see the expected result, there must be something broken with the update to TL2014
@JosephWright Fontspec, i don't know. I don't have the right tools right now.
@JosephWright Fontspec only loads/uses fonts, right? Why would it change the symbol (i think this is done via a counter)?

5:20 PM
@JosephWright Is there any L3 code for converting UTF-8 to Unicode point?
@JosephWright I saw something in l3str, but undocumented and probably just very experimental.

@egreg Bruno did some stuff on string encoding, but I don't think this covered that case. What sort of input/output are you after?
@egreg That'll be Bruno's code

@JosephWright Given a UTF-8 valid string, convert it to the corresponding Unicode point, say <E2><82><AC> (meaning three bytes) to 20AC. Under pdftex, of course.

@Johannes_B I suspect it's this problem: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/76470/…
or not...

@cgnieder But why does @JosephWright also sees the wrong symbols?

@Johannes_B I formulated my suspicion before I tested myself and before I read the chat... my bad

5:30 PM
@cgnieder No problem. How could you have known? :-)

@cis: I know how to create forms, I am struggling with the JavaScript specifications within Adobe Reader (I know, those forms will not be very portable at all, but at the moment, they are designed for me only)

cis
@ChristianHupfer Don't forget to post the result somewhere, so that I can have look ;)

@cis: Are you an expert in Adobe Javascript?

@Johannes_B must be fontspec. If you remove all unnecessary stuff like titling and xltxtra and use article as class the symbols at the bottom still are all double daggers. But if you remove fontspec everything is normal again.

@cgnieder Thanks for testing. I was a bit lost there with my old TL.
@cgnieder How is sending a ticket/bug report?

cis
5:39 PM
@ChristianHupfer lamentably not :( So I want to visit your script

@cis: I don't know what you want ;-)

cis
@ChristianHupfer Dito

@Johannes_B Got it!

@cis: I don't want to work with insdjs or what is like to be called...

@JosephWright The solution/reason?

5:41 PM
@Johannes_B Protected status of \@fnsymbol

cis
@ChristianHupfer I dont know what I want. No... I want to look into many formular-examples, so I can learn from them.

@cis: As soon as possible I have found some solution, I'll \let\you\know ;-)

cis
@ChristianHupfer Ok ;)

@Johannes_B It's a mistake in fontspec-patches.sty: Will has
\cs_set_protected:Npn \@fnsymbol #1
 {
  \int_case:nnF {#1}
   {
    {0} {}
    {1} { \mode_if_math:TF *\textasteriskcentered }
    {2} { \mode_if_math:TF \dagger\textdagger }
    {3} { \mode_if_math:TF \ddagger\textdaggerdbl }
    {4} { \mode_if_math:TF \mathsection\textsection }
    {5} { \mode_if_math:TF \mathparagraph\textparagraph }
    {6} { \mode_if_math:TF \|\textbardbl }
    {7} { \mode_if_math:TF {**}{\textasteriskcentered\textasteriskcentered} }
    {8} { \mode_if_math:TF {\dagger\dagger}{\textdagger\textdagger} }

@JosephWright Are you sending in the bug-report or should i?

5:44 PM
but the protected here prevents expansion as the code in \footnotesymbol expects. The result is you always get a mark for the last footnote number
@Johannes_B I'll do it

@JosephWright Ok, thanks.

@Johannes_B Reported
@egreg Don't think we have such a thing

@JosephWright Great. You made my day, i would have gone insane without knowing.

@JosephWright I did with stringenc and \pdfescapehex.

tex.stackexchange.com/q/194974/37907 <- The comments are like a rollercoaster.

5:55 PM
@Johannes_B oh yeah. Now he resolved it himself -> OT

@tohecz Do you know what he means by laterality?

@Johannes_B @tohecz what's “laterality”?
@Johannes_B :) ^^^^

@Johannes_B no, but somehow I "don't care"

The term laterality refers to the preference most humans show for one side of their body over the other. Examples include left-handedness/right-handedness and left/right-footedness, it may also refer to the primary use of the left or right hemisphere in the brain. It may also apply to animals or plants. The majority of tests have been conducted on humans, specifically to determine the effects on language. == Human laterality == The majority of humans are right-handed. Many are also right-sided in general (that is, they prefer to use their right eye, right foot and right ear if forced to make a...
No idea what the KOMA-Script equivalent is

@cgnieder cat /usr/share/trans/de-en | grep laterality

I am bored.

@PauloCereda don't be :) you've got an excercise in the right panel

6:37 PM
@tohecz: nah, egreg told me I was close, so I got a 5.0 meaning that I passed. :)

6:47 PM
@PauloCereda :)

7:26 PM
@PauloCereda I've just discovered that lots of my files have really crappy permissions set on them (e.g. rwxrwxrwx for a regular file). How might this have come about (I certainly haven't been setting permissions on them) and how can I fix this without doing everything by hand? (e.g. I still need directories to have the x bit set, so I can't just do chmod -x * ...

@AlanMunn find . -type f | xargs chmod -x could be the solution

@JosephWright: Did "a discussion" take place?
I haven't sent you any review samples...

@Werner About?

@JosephWright Oh, regarding robo-reviewing...

@Werner Appropriate discussion took place

7:39 PM
...at a glance there seems to be a change in reviewing behaviour.

@Johannes_B: One of the questions with a lot of comments, leading to nothing as the OP turns around himself ;-)

@Alan: hi Alan, I'm en route home right now. :) It's quite difficult to tell why these files came to be like that, perhaps some side effect of a mass chmod. As Tom suggested, find can be of use here; personally I'd go with find's -exec flag instead of xargs'ing my way through chmod. How is the ownership of the files? Maybe we could chown them as well.

@wipet: You can add any time cast a reopen vote if you think that yonder question was closed on false conditions

Do we need a pair of () in the following? 6 m^{\frac{3}{4}} : (3m^{-\frac{3}{4}}) or 6 m^{\frac{3}{4}} : 3m^{-\frac{3}{4}} is enough?

@Werner: I have the impression about a review change too, but I believe that other users have been frightened to do reviews... I have not skipped so many First Posts before as yesterday and today... I am tired of First Posts ;-)

7:59 PM
@egreg isn't that essentially what inputenc's utf8 code (derived from xmltex) does?

@DavidCarlisle inputenc does the converse, AFAIK

@egreg well it takes the utf8 input and normalizes it to a form that is essentially a control sequence giving the byte length followed by the utf8 bytes

@Pleasedon'ttouch they're redundant imho

@DavidCarlisle Which is not what I'm looking for

@egreg maybe I misread (but I'm on holiday and had half a bottle of wine so I don't care about your problems:-) perhaps you should ask a question on the main site?
5

8:04 PM
@DavidCarlisle I already have the working code. ;-)

@tohecz I am just afraid, it might be ambiguous if I don't use ().

@Pleasedon'ttouch if you really just use it as a ratio, it shouldn't be a problem

@tohecz I see.

8:28 PM
@Pleasedon'ttouch: Could you add a screen shot of the hyperlinks you mention to the meta post?
1
Q: The hyperlink color seems to be difficult to distinguish from the text

Please don't touchIn my opinion (or my eyes are so bad), I think the hyperlink color is difficult to differentiate from the text. As a result, I always add a word "click" in the hyperlink to overcome this issue. It will be better if the hyperlink color is a bit contrast to the text.

That way you (we) have a record if things change of how it was...
...also it will be immediately apparent what colours you are referring to.

@PauloCereda @tohecz Thanks, I'll try that. It's really weird how lots of files got this way.

@Alan: I'll be home in about 2 hours. I will ping you to see how the procedure went. :)
@Alan: I think folder permissions must be checked as well.

Every once in a while my favorite kind of question appears: tex.stackexchange.com/q/194973/3954

@GonzaloMedina: Because you can use tcolorbox ? ;-)

@JosephWright @DavidCarlisle Here's the code

@GonzaloMedina What does mytemail stand for?
@GonzaloMedina Especially the t?

@Johannes_B t for tcolorbox.

@GonzaloMedina Ah, of course :-)

@PauloCereda I'll be on my way to Chicago so I won't look at this for a day or so now.

@ChristianHupfer Yes, although I also like to use mdframed for that kind of designs; I will provide a mdframed version shortly. I like using the power of those packages.

8:54 PM
@GonzaloMedina: I used tcolorbox so far only, but I should look on mdframed too, I know... And thanks again for the help on my print label question ;-)

damn
@AlanMunn I got lost just now

@PauloCereda I finally remembered the website for open-source music
it's like deviantart but fewer boobies :) heheh
not so much quality stuff though

9:25 PM
@ChristianHupfer mdframed version added. In some aspects tcolorbox has now more capabilities than mdframed, bot both packages are powerful and allow great level of customization.

@GonzaloMedina: Yes, Thomas F. Sturm is continously working on that package. It's an amazing package

@ChristianHupfer Indeed!

9:54 PM
Have a good time... I leave for today (well, lasting only 6 minutes here ;-) )

10:28 PM
@PauloCereda are you still here?
