@PauloCereda yes but my commandline is bash...

@AlanMunn I can't understand this at all. The OP did not know what \chapter* does, which is not a bad thing or whatever. Reading an introduction would help this, which is a good thing. Why could it be better for the OP not to give this useful advice?

@StephanLehmke True, the Vivi's comment is on the reactionary side, and none of the others are. But I don't see that the question should have been closed.
@StephanLehmke We're talking at cross purposes here. I'm not disputing that recommending an intro is helpful, and certainly not offensive. But it's also helpful to answer the question (especially since an answer had been given) rather than close the question.

@IceBox Hm I see. It's quite difficult for me to answer. :( I think you could take a look at how the big company does the quality process and if you'd fit in it. Sometimes it's quite bureaucratic. On the bright side, it's a nice field, and it might give you more experience on your own software development process.

@PauloCereda That was what I was thinking I can continue developing my own softwares.

@IceBox Indeed. I think we need to keep our hands dirty in code. :)

12:09 AM
@AlanMunn The point is, the problem is not with quotchap at all. To make the answer match the question, you'd need to reformulate it to mean something like "Why doesn't the chapter get numbered?" and then give an answer. My search-fu is not strong enough to find out whether it would be a duplicate then, but I somehow suspect it. (ctd.)
The important question wrt. "too localized" is: "Would another person with the same problem find this question?" The answer is no, because the OP thought it was about quotchap. And exactly this circumstance, including the misunderstanding, is unique to this OP. Hence, TL.

@StephanLehmke Ok. That's a fair argument. You've convinced me. :)

Ode to Matlab; Whenever I'm down I callout:.... your name. You always find new ways to crash.

@percusse :)

@PauloCereda hey coder leave the ducks alone. Doin dat datdaaaadat datdadaaadad daaaaaaa

I think I should develop a Matlab clone that works. :)
@percusse <3

12:15 AM
that was pretty accurate I think ..... :P

@percusse :)

@percusse A Tapestry of bugs?

@AlanMunn Until 4 months ago, Matlab's inconsistency was a topic of coffee corner talk for laughs and I didn't care too much since ...well... it's just a software how bad can it be? In the last four months, I've build concrete evidence that if you are doing scientific work and using matlab, I won't read your stuff :)

@percusse: offtopic: will you get an Xbox? :)
offtopic: I think @Alan got a Wii U. :P

Also as I've bragged about a gazillion of times I know people who develop 2-3 toolboxes. So they are using my counterexamples for testing. Imagine that :) me for testing purposes. It's like nanotechnology with a desktop ruler heheh
@PauloCereda I'm waiting for a customer for my Wii then I'll get one and you'll never hear from me again.

12:25 AM
@percusse Oh no!

@PauloCereda Until I'm 165 kg and developed liver failure due to excessive PES or FIFA partying.

@percusse I saw the blog devoted to that you guys mentioned a couple of days ago. (But you did get my Tapestry reference?)

@percusse LOL

@PauloCereda Why?

@AlanMunn Ah then no. Sorry about that.

12:26 AM
@percusse This totally reminds me of that episode of South Park about WoW.

@PauloCereda hehehe exactly.

@AlanMunn Because it's on sales in the US since day zero. :) And we will have it only by the second semester of 2013. :)

@percusse I thought your "callout your name" was a reference to the Carol King song.
@PauloCereda I have never been and likely never will be a gamer.

@AlanMunn Oh my! @percusse: we need to do something.

@AlanMunn Ah no. It's even worse. There is this song Groove Armada - My Friend but I remembered the lyrics wrong :) Man I'm just as sloppy as matlab.

12:30 AM

@AlanMunn Ah, I know this one. Great stuff.

@percusse: think of us taking @Alan to the deepest corners of CoD, and Alan warning us via Teamspeak, FRAAAG OOOUT!
@AlanMunn Great stuff it. :) I was expecting James Taylor though. :)
Oh no, Youtube put Céline Dion as recommended video! IT'S A TRAP!

@AlanMunn Yesterday I did a rehearsal with my band playing Pearl Jam then we went to the concert of Swedish mafia house or something like that. That was quite a shock. As my friend said we felt pasteurized with both extremes. :)
@PauloCereda no worries, the best gamers come out of people who think gaming is stupid.
I can see the hidden sniper in Alan Munn.

@percusse LOL
@percusse: suddenly, "clear" from Alan. :P

hahaha, finish him!

12:38 AM
Time to go to Bedfordshire. Good night, friends! :)

@PauloCereda Good night!

kan
@PauloCereda Hmm...
Good night!

2 hours later…
2:29 AM
@PauloCereda I am not saying he is rude, or that his tone was rude. His English is fine, and my query isn't with how he said it as much as what he said. I don't think we should be telling anyone that his question is too basic. It may have been a long time ago for you guys, but I remember really well my struggles when I was a newbie, and I suffer this every day with emacs, recently with R, etc.
@PauloCereda When we get past a certain threshold it is easier to identify the problem and go look it up, but we shouldn't assume the person didn't do their homework just because their problem is obvious to us. To be fair, I am upset with what I think is a general trend, and I vented on one person that very likely didn't mean any harm (Clemens)
@PauloCereda I just think we can go easier on newbies. It was his first question. Would you like to be told your question is too basic or that you should go read a book? Just put yourself in the newbie's shoes. I would be very discouraged to ask anything else on this website.
@StephanLehmke @AlanMunn I am not complaining about the question being closed. I am complaining about the elitist comment that the question is "too basic" and the assumption that the OP hasn't read an introductory book. Also, it wouldn't have hurt to say "I am voting to close this question because...".
@StephanLehmke I think it is different to vent (and I was clear about that) than to make comments that imply the person is stupid or lazy. I don't think the commenter meant bad, just that we should go easier on newbies. In any case, you are right that I am rude (and I am worse in person unfortunately. I really should measure my words better).

3:09 AM
@Vivi In some occasions, planets align wrongly or something equally stupid happens and rage and frustrations are carried over to our online personas (always happen to people who work with matlab :P) So a thoughtless comment can create a snowball effect especially in a place like this in which people not only act nice but also strive for a nice community and try to correct each others wrongs. But at the same time it's a pretty laid-back community.
So you can vent (rant complain throw things at people) there is nothing wrong with that. Opiniated people rulaz!!
Having said that, from my own experience, I always thought that I'm placing myself next to newbies and defending them against the wizards etc. but recently I found myself in a Why don't we just close the question already? situation.
So sometimes you get tired or something and everything seems wrong. Then you start typing weird shit and maybe clemens had a rough time because he is pretty good at handling new users.
I don't agree that he did it on purpose or something like that but in certain occasions some comments rub the people in the wrong way.
OK I can't find an exit to finish this paragraph :) Long story short, please keep on ranting venting but also consider that we might not be drawing accurate conclusions from limited sample size.
googles the difference rant and vent

@percusse I agree. But @Vivi just be a little careful about implying that someone is being elitist by their actions here. I truly don't see much evidence of that at all.
Linguist's reply:
John vented his frustrations.
*John ranted his frustrations.
*John vented at the insensitivity of the comments.
John ranted at the insensitivity of the comments.
(*=ungrammatical)
:)

@AlanMunn Ah thanks. Can you do this inside a longtable in a footnote by any chance?
2

@percusse LOL

3:36 AM
@percusse I don't think he did it on purpose or with intention of being mean, I just think it is not a nice thing to say to a newbie or someone who is in a difficult situation. It assumes things that may not be true. This is getting so much bigger than it should! I complain about his words saying he should have measured them better. Next, I say things without measuring my words better. Then, I am accused of that and say even more things that are not careful. Blah blah blah...
I would like to be able to use the excuse that it is that time of the month, but unfortunately that would be a lie. I

@Vivi Neither you nor clemens are accused of anything. That's clear and that's what I meant in that long never-ending paragraph.

I am getting overly worked up today, though, not sure why. A comment made earlier here made me so furious I could hardly concentrate on my work :( Good thing I didn't say anything in the heat of the moment!

It's just a matter of tone.
hahaha, grab a beer then :)

Well, @StephanLehmke seemed to think so. I think he took my words "I am pissed off" somewhat personally.

@Vivi Ah, nevermind them, they are all mathematicians, heheh starting by @StephanLehmke egreg andrew and many others will kill me at least once after this.

3:41 AM
Or 10 (beers). And yes, tone is something I definitely need to work on. Funny thing, I nearly did "International Relations" in college because I wanted to be a diplomat. If there is something I am not, is diplomatic!

You would have fun in the cold war era then
I just love this

@Vivi I hope I wasn't responsible for that. Anyway, I think everyone will get over it.
@percusse Very cute!

@AlanMunn Of course not! You were always very nice :)
@percusse yes, like that!

OK enough of angry birds, everybody in the house get yourself registered to

Q: Who Wants to Win a LaTeX Book?

Marc van DongenI am organising a lottery and Springer have kindly agreed to donate a copy of LaTeX and Friends. Joseph Wright has kindly agreed to act a an independent witness/judge and he knows the winning number. <LEGAL STUFF> The lottery closes when the judges announce the winner. The judges decision...

@percusse Can I enter e^{i}\pi ?
2

3:50 AM
@AlanMunn TeX will truncate it.

@percusse I meant as my number. Boy, you're slow tonight. :)

@AlanMunn Ah come on, I thought it was a nice reply. Dang!

@percusse Oh, so I'm slow. So many miscommunications today. Is it a full moon?

@AlanMunn Something about the world ending was on the news. Maybe it's that.

@percusse I know the day, but do you know what time that's happening?

3:55 AM
@percusse is it a ebook or hard copy of book and how will it be sent ?

@percusse like nostradamus predicted gangnam style phenomenon is a sign?
2

@AlanMunn UTC was not invented back then so they didn't bother to mention.
@texenthusiast It's free. The rest is irrelevant. (PhD here heh)

@hpesoj626 Now you've done it. You've mentioned the g-word.
This one's from MIT with some very special cameos.

@percusse u guessed it right , i am doing literally Ph.D

@hpesoj626 nostradamus is worse than gangnam :) so I don't know the causality here
@AlanMunn Puhaha Chomsky style!!

4:01 AM
@percusse :)

@AlanMunn lol. Gangnam Geeks. @percusse Well, 12.12.12 went past without the sun burning the earth to naught.

@hpesoj626 So we can relax for another 89 years for the next round date nonsense. Apocalypse 01.01.01 The miscalculation! Coming to a theater soon!

Heh. If I have a reason to live that long then it would be to utter sarcasm for another apocalyptic nonsense. /looks around: I hope I am not offending anybody
@AlanMunn Pardon... but did you mean e^{i\pi}? :)

@hpesoj626 Oops. A little scope problem there.

MIT Gangnam made this chat room Christmas-y Be back. It's lunch time here. @AlanMunn, what is the proper word, sleigh or sled? Watch my avatar ride one.

4:34 AM
@percusse Great question, eh? Where's Nostradamus when you need him?

@AlanMunn OK this time I'm slow. Which question is it? +If I need to see Nostradamus, we have a coffee shop (Dutch flavored :P) downstairs.

@percusse You just edited it. Bold Chinese.

@AlanMunn Ahaha now I get it.
Did you see my reason for the edit? :P

@percusse Ha ha. How about this one: tex.stackexchange.com/a/86001/2693

@AlanMunn It sounds like a distant relative :)
@AlanMunn Heh, that's indeed a piece of art.

4:42 AM
@percusse It's kind of funny, because he knows me, so I don't really know where the typo came from.

Bethany Marzewski on December 12, 2012

After months of work from our dev team, last week marked the official launch of our first localized site with Careers 2.0 in German. We celebrated the occasion in style on December 5 with a blow-out party at Betahaus in Berlin complete with product demos, free food, free t-shirts, oh, and German beer of course.

But why Germany? Well, aside from the fact that it gave us a great excuse to make these really cool t-shirts, we have a few other pretty good reasons for this expansion:

Germans are the largest non-English-speaking group of Stack Overflow users in Europe To date, visitors from Germa …

*...free food, free t-shirts, oh, and German beer of course.*
Notice the missing *free* word on one of the items.

Interesting. I noticed that I couldn't see that some people had already voted to close a question. I remember seeing something about "piling up on votes" and I wonder if not being able to see the close votes cast was designed to prevent this from happening.

10:42 AM
@Vivi I don't remember what levels the various permissions are set at. Can you vote to close a question? If you can then you can see how many people have already voted.

@Vivi You should be able to see how many close votes there are, but not names

@AndrewStacey Yes, I used to see the votes, but in this case I didn't until I voted to close the question myself! Weird! Maybe because when I loaded the page no votes had been cast, and by the time I voted to close 2 other people had voted?

@Vivi Can happen
@Vivi For example, you might go to vote to close and then get told you can't as the question is already closed!

@JosephWright That's it then! :)

@Vivi There are certain recent features in the SE system that make it easier for people to find questions where a close vote has been cast (the "tools" menu, but you might need 10k to see that) and the network-wide intention of this was to make moderation happen faster (read: problematic posts cleared quicker). We strive to act slowly, but that doesn't always happen.
When something "bad" does happen, the very best thing to do is to bring it to chat.

10:48 AM
@AndrewStacey I need to do that instead of venting in comments :(

@Vivi I see. :) I think the question could be rephrased a little and then reopened, answered and the "old" comments cleared.
@Vivi We Brazilians have boiling blood. ♥ :)

@Vivi Yes, it is far better to vent here instead of comments. Looking at the transcript and reading a bit between the lines (so apologies for inaccuracies), if you think someone's left a comment that could be misinterpreted then rather than calling them out in the comments you could leave an explanatory comment:

@PauloCereda As I said elsewhere, my problem is not so much with the closing of the question (I lean on not closing it, but don't feel strongly about it), but with the lack of comments to say that the question was being closed and why, and my interpretation of cgnider's comment (which I know now he didn't mean).
Oh, I did vent here haha. That went down worse than the comment itself...

As an example: "I think that what Vivi might be trying to say is that this question indicates that it might be useful for you to spend some time reading through an introduction to LaTeX such as The not-so-short ... where things like this are covered in some detail. We're quite happy to answer such questions here, but a good book is a wise investment if you don't already have one."

But yes, I should have handled things better. Funny I will complain about someone being mean by being 10^10 times more mean.
Yes, that is a nice comment!

10:53 AM
@Vivi Venting here blows over quickly and it's rare to hold a grudge. Venting in comments doesn't, though, because it is more public.

@Vivi I think this concern is valid, and I support you. We've been trying, for example, to restrain ourselves from closing questions too quickly, and giving the OP a chance to see the possible duplicate or even rephrasing the question.
@AndrewStacey The British wisdom.

@Vivi It's easy to think of these things afterwards ("l'esprit d'escalier"), which is why we build up the "Text building blocks" - so that you don't have to think of a polite thing to say on the spur of the moment (and when you aren't feeling very polite).

@AndrewStacey Yes, I learned of this recently (2 or 3 days ago). That post is really useful!

Another useful comment is: "I see that this already has 2/3/4 votes to close. We should now give the questioner the chance to see if the linked questions and/or comments give them enough to solve their problem. <author>, if you don't then please edit your question to make it clear what your current sticking point is. To all If it remains in its current state then it will get dealt with at the next "Answer the Unanswered" session."

Quick Question: What is a test for the presence of AucTeX on a Ubuntu 12.04?

10:59 AM
@AndrewStacey Good one, too! As long as I can see that there were votes to close and the website doesn't play tricks on me like today!

@kan aptitude search auctex

@AndrewStacey Nice one. :)

OK, it is 10 PM, an hour past my bed time! I better go. Cheers all for the feedback :)

I still fail to see how the OP is better off without the advice to read a basic intro.

kan
@AndrewStacey Oh, Thank you, so much! My comp did not have aptitude too... installed that and the output read i AucTeX -Integrated... ... looks like I have AucTeX then?

11:04 AM
@kan If you want to know if it's actually being used just load a .tex file into emacs and type ^H m and it should say Major mode in AUCTeX for editing LaTeX files.

kan
@DavidCarlisle The help window begins with Minor modes... so, default or no major mode enabled?
(but, I did C-c-C-c RET to compile file...
and it compiled.)

@kan yes after the minor modes, you _always have some major mode enabled) (I can't remember what C-c C-c does in the standard non auctex latex mode:-)

kan
@DavidCarlisle LaTeX mode defined in tex-mode.el
LaTeX mode defined in `tex-mode.el':
Major mode for editing files of input for LaTeX.
Makes $ and } display the characters they match.
Makes " insert `` when it seems to be the beginning of a quotation,
and '' when it appears to be the end; it inserts " only after a \.

@kan doesn't look like auctex to me C-h m should look more or less like this
Enabled minor modes: Auto-Compression Auto-Encryption Blink-Cursor
File-Name-Shadow Font-Lock Global-Font-Lock Line-Number Menu-Bar
Mouse-Wheel Tool-Bar Tooltip Transient-Mark

(Information about these minor modes follows the major mode info.)

LaTeX mode:
Major mode in AUCTeX for editing LaTeX files.
See info under AUCTeX for full documentation.

Special commands:
key             binding
---             -------

C-c		Prefix Command
C-j		reindent-then-newline-and-indent
RET		TeX-newline
ESC		Prefix Command
@kan C-h v AUCTeX-version says
AUCTeX-version is a variable defined in `tex-site.el'.
Its value is "11.86"

kan
@DavidCarlisle Variable does not even match for me! All the more reason why I need to figure out how to load AUCTeX! :(

@kan I see you finally deleted your math account, sad...

kan
@JasperLoy I had deleted it long ago, but, the place has only become more noisy ever since I left.
(I do read some specific users' contribution to the site.)

user19161
@kan Noisy? What do you mean?

kan
@JasperLoy Cf. Bill's user page.

user19161
@kan You know about that too?

kan
@JasperLoy Well, no.

user19161
11:21 AM
@kan Wrong use of cf there, cf means compare, not see.

user19161
Best to avoid Latin abbreviations altogether. For see, use v.

user19161
cf stands for confer in Latin and v for vide.

kan
@JasperLoy OK. Noted! Thanks for the correction.

@JosephWright: Could you please zap the two comments here: meta.tex.stackexchange.com/a/2546/3094

@PauloCereda Done

user19161
11:22 AM
@kan Well, he's been suspended for a year this time...

@JosephWright Thanks. :)

user19161
@kan Also, I finally got 10k on math, yay!

kan
@JasperLoy Oh! Wow! That's stupid! People don't realise the wealth of his answers.
@JasperLoy Hmm. Impressive.

user19161
@kan Well, I don't know what happened to judge whether it was legitimate.

user19161
@kan Only from answering simple questions, so not impressive!

kan
11:24 AM
@JasperLoy But, whatever, I'd like that people are treated with the honour they deserve.
Can someone tell me how to name the init file for emacs? I have figured where to place it, but not what to call it?

@JosephWright flipping heck the duplicate qn has an answer with 148 score:-)

@kan .emacs

@kan .emacs traditionally

kan
@AndrewStacey Oh, fantastic.
Thank you @David and @AndrewStacey

@PauloCereda @JosephWright I would like to suggest Stefan Kottwitz for next interview

11:38 AM
@texenthusiast don't let @PauloCereda off the hook, we should make him be the interviewee next time.
6

@DavidCarlisle i thought about him first , but was reluctant as it is his choice

@texenthusiast If he doesn't agree soon I think we'll have to publish a fake interview by taking all his logged comments from this chat room out of context, just insert some questions between these lines and we are done:

@DavidCarlisle do you mean like the prank by radio hosts
I would love to see @PauloCereda interview

@texenthusiast well that's not funny

11:53 AM
may be its not the right example

I am using natbib and agsm for harvard style referencing, but I found agsm is diffrent than standard n many ways,
is there any other replacement somebody might have come across?

India 1st Innings

@DavidCarlisle Is this good for England?

@PauloCereda only day 2 of 5 so it's all open but yes 330 is more than 87

1:28 PM
Oh no, M dies on Skyfall!
oopsie, spoiler alert.

@PauloCereda there's always an M:-)

@DavidCarlisle Indeed. :)

2:19 PM
@PauloCereda Back from an adventurous trip to Verona, where there was heavy snow. Here it has snowed only during the night and now it's raining. Trains with big delays. :(

@egreg Oh. :( I hope everything is fine. We are facing some heavy rains these days.

@PauloCereda I'm not going out for the next two days. ;-)

@egreg :)

@PauloCereda Arnold S?

@egreg I was thinking of the same movie. :)

@PauloCereda On tuesday evening I had to cycle home on sheer ice (in pitch dark, and with descent even...) The special tires did a good job, thank God I got them installed last week. But still the instincts were screaming for help all the time. I think I never had such a high pulse ;-)

@StephanLehmke Oh. :)
@percusse: I double dare you to add this image to your answer in the book contest:
<3
@StephanLehmke: I have no idea what's the impact of riding a bike on ice. :)

@PauloCereda Well the impact is usually that of your head hitting the ground ;-)
Cars will skid on ice, but with a bike you only stand on two (very small) points. So when it gets slippery, usually the tires will just skew away sideways. Think of going down a slope to find the street is covered in sand right in the curve at the foot of the slope.

3:22 PM
@StephanLehmke ooh!

3:36 PM
btw, I don't endorse at all watching other people have accidents. The guy should have gone down put some salt on that curve!

@StephanLehmke Oh my! It is slippery.

3:52 PM
@StephanLehmke By far the worst injury I've had on a bicycle was on ice. I was riding my road bike with my feet in toe clips and hit a patch of ice. So the bike is going one way and I'm going the other way, but still firmly attached to the bike and I pulled both hamstrings as a result. For the next week or so, although I could ride, I could barely walk.

@PauloCereda Not a problem :)
done

@percusse awww <3

If the cold is enough in NL you can ride your bike on the canals. Not enjoyable if the ice is thin :)

@percusse: you are our robot expert, so: robotics.stackexchange.com/questions/679/… :)

@PauloCereda Because we are scared to death if something happens to a multi-billion dollar robot. Not to mention that the software runs on Java so it needs time to think. heheh
Joking aside the mission planning does not allow for idly wandering around. To maximize the efficiency, they want to get as much info as possible during any trip so at the same time the robot is probably performing multitude of tasks.

@percusse OMG it's so epic.
@percusse Good point. :)

@PauloCereda When they are out of experiments to run, we'll see more exciting stunts.

@percusse I'm so gonna send a DO A BARREL ROLL signal. :)

@PauloCereda C-r M-b

4:16 PM
@percusse o.O

@PauloCereda Emars rulaz!

@percusse Yay! :)

My favorite is actually the Rosetta mission and alike. Ridiculous stuff hanging in space gives you a weird perspective.

4:35 PM
@AlanMunn Fortunately I never had a serious injury cycling (apart from bruises), but by far most of my bike accidents in the last 30 years were due to slippery ground (twice on ice, once on flattened snow, once on wet surface, once I went into some sort of metal rail). Fortunately I didn't get hit by a car yet, though it was a near miss several times...
Though on the very way I take from the office home, two cyclists (that I know of) were killed by cars in recent years.

@StephanLehmke Eek. Where I live now my cycling is mainly on bike paths so I'm not so worried about that. But Michigan is an awful state for bicycles, (and pedestrians) since people in cars think they own the entire road. This is deeply ingrained in the culture since Michigan is (used to be) the centre of the American auto industry.
@StephanLehmke I too haven't had any serious injuries due to cycling. I did have one very funny accident where I stopped at a traffic light and couldn't get my foot out of the pedals and literally fell over in place.

@AlanMunn Oh well I think I had these "strap-on" pedals for two weeks, but I couldn't cope with them at all. In now have cleats and it's rather easy to get out of those.

@StephanLehmke The problem with cleats is that you can't ride your bike without funny shoes to match.

4:51 PM
@AlanMunn Correct. They're about as funny as running shoes. I had my first pair for 16 years, now I have the second one.

Being a horse owner in the past, I always tell bike riders to never use fancy pedals. When riding a horse, only the tiptoe might reach the stirrup, otherwise things can be very serious. :)

@PauloCereda Well when riding a horse the horse does the propelling mostly, so it's quite a different case. I'm not inclined to deny myself 25% of my force, and I think the danger of injury is miniscule compared to the danger of getting ridden over by a car.

@StephanLehmke I meant that the foot can't be tied to some sort of strap pedal, even if they can give you a boost as part of a pulling force. In the case of falling of a bike, things get serious, and the same happens in the horse.

@PauloCereda At least for a bicycle, keeping your feet in the pedals when you fall protects you from breaking things. So they are in fact also a safety feature as well as a way to get more power from your pedalling.

5:06 PM
@AlanMunn So you guys are telling me I always rode my bike the wrong way? :)
Well, I never used helmets. :P

@PauloCereda I'm not telling you anything, just that toe clips/straps or click in pedals have a safety component to them to. In addition to avoiding broken bones in a fall, there are also certain parts of your anatomy that are quite vulnerable if your feet happen to slip off the pedals... And toe clips prevent that too.

@AlanMunn I'm just kidding. :) I was never a "safety enthusiast" when it comes to bikes, and I did some crazy things. I just can't see advantages of staying still in my bike when I'm reaching the ground impact at an alarming speed. :)

@PauloCereda Ok then. Yes. :)

@AlanMunn Oh boy. :) You know there's a saying in Brazil telling that "Deus protege as crianças e os bêbados.", right? :) My guardian angel must hate me by now. :)

@PauloCereda Better keep drinking.

5:16 PM
@AlanMunn LOL
@Jake: you are awesome, sir:

See the code. :)

@PauloCereda Now all we need is the script to grab the numbers from the answers in real time.

@PauloCereda the plot seems to be cut off before my answer :( (but I have got a badge for my answer)

@AlanMunn I'll try something. :)
@DavidCarlisle Oh no!

Q: Does anyone know the name of this template?

DecayingAlthough I like latex (and God knows it hasn't always been the case...), I am a bit bored of the default template and would like to use something looking more like this: http://www.ens-lyon.fr/DSM/SDMsite/M2/stages_M2/Debierre2012.pdf Does anyone the name of this specific template? Or something l...

I'm not sure I like this template.
@AlanMunn: I think my script should have some OCR support: meta.tex.stackexchange.com/a/3036/3094
:)

6:20 PM
@PauloCereda Text font New Century Schoolbook and CM for math: horrible. It's also too crowded. The small caps are faked and they show it.

@egreg I can't understand why some people want to reproduce these layouts. :(

6:41 PM
@AlanMunn: script ready. What do I do now? :)

7:17 PM
@egreg: I almost forgot! Yesterday was Santa Lucia's. :)

7:33 PM
@PauloCereda I assume you have a \write18 call in @Jake 's source code and have pgfplots read in the data points. Then we can just copy the code and run it.

@AlanMunn I wish everybody added an entry in the form <number> - <fancy comment>. I won't be able to parse every possible entry in there (see Thorsten's, for example). :)

@PauloCereda Yeah, I knew that was going to be a problem. Of course I wasn't really serious about the script either.

@AlanMunn <3
@Alan: I'll try to parse most answers I can, then I'll just add the problematic answers as they are. :)

@AndrewStacey What is the app you mention in tex.blogoverflow.com/2012/09/i-tex-therefore-ipad-reloaded/… ?
Is it TeXpad, perhaps?

7:57 PM
@JLDiaz Yes, it was TeXPad.

Looks good. I guess it does not come with tikz, though

@JLDiaz I think that TeX Writer is the best of the two.

@AndrewStacey Does it allow \input? If so, I guess that more packages can be added by dropping the .sty somewhere...

@JLDiaz I think both allow you to add packages (certainly TeX Writer does - I've installed the entirety of TeXLive). Neither has full functionality yet, but the editor for TeX Writer is much better with the double row of keys and the full log file.
(Hmm, I think TeXPad now lets you get the log file ... I may be misremembering some things)

8:16 PM
@PauloCereda I forgot to make my best wishes to your mom!

8:34 PM
@DavidCarlisle Terribly sorry, fixed now! (And the graph is updated)

@egreg Thanks! :) It's interesting how my mom's name became Lúcia instead of Luzia. :)

9:03 PM
@DavidCarlisle: ^^

@Jake :-)

@DavidCarlisle Look at you at the top of the graph! :)
A lot of people won the Quorum badge for posting on Meta. :)

9:25 PM
Wow! Stolen a green tick to Gonzalo. I'll try one from David's, now. ;-)

@egreg A TikZ one! :)

@PauloCereda Well, TikZ wasn't involved. I used a (documented) feature in a package by DPC, which probably the author forgot.

@egreg ooh! :)
I try to keep an open mind, but how am I supposed to say the song's name? :)

@egreg If you need the rep you can have one of my ticks for christmas.

@DavidCarlisle TikZ-mas! :P

9:29 PM
@DavidCarlisle Well, I'm only 15 ahead of you for the week (and 60 behind Gonzalo).

9:47 PM
@DavidCarlisle I have another grep/sed question for you...
...actually, it builds on the previous one.
I'll formulate it in a little while. brb

10:03 PM
Hey @JosephWright! :)

@PauloCereda Hello

@JosephWright We miss you today. :)

@PauloCereda Christmas party: been out much of the day

@JosephWright oh! :)

10:24 PM
The length of the meta answers in the contest clearly separate the SE cognoscenti from the rest. :)

@AlanMunn Indeed. :)

11:03 PM
@DavidCarlisle: So assume again I have the following situation. For FileA.eps I have
Here is some text
BoundingBox: 123 456 789 012
HiresBoundingBox: 123.4567 456.7890 789.0123 012.3456
Here is some more text
and for FileB.eps I have
Here is some text
BoundingBox: 128 450 782 020
HiresBoundingBox: 128.4567 450.7890 782.0123 020.3456
Here is some more text
Using grep/sed, how would I extract only the y-coordinates of the %%BoundingBox in FileB.eps and use them to replace the y-coordinates of the %%BoundingBox in FileA.eps?
The y-coordinates of %%BoundingBox in FileA.eps are (..,456) and (..,012) (just as an example), and I want to replace these to be (..,450) and (..,020), but keep the x-coordinates the same.
I do not mind if it is "easier" to do it in multiple steps. That is, if you should replace y1 first, and then y2.

11:37 PM
@Werner sorry I was just fighting @egreg for an expansion question tick:-)
2

@DavidCarlisle I've noticed...

grep "^BoundingBox:" fileB.eps | sed -e "s/^.*: ([0-9]+) *([0-9]+) *([0-9]+) *([0-9]+) */$2/"
is (untested) the first y cordinate and same with $4 at the end is the second y cordinate then you just need to do a sed as before to drop then into the bounding boxes of the other files

@DavidCarlisle So the pattern from grep (in this case, %%BoundingBox: ... ... ... ... is matched to sed's *: NNN NNN NNN NNN and using $2 would only replace the second element?
That sed, ....err, said, sed is cryptic and awesome.

@Werner well (if I got it right) it doesn't replace the second element it discards everything but that so ... oh hang on I'll just post a tested version

Did you just notice @PauloCereda's gravatar sail away on a sleigh?
It must be Christmas around here... not because he left, but because of the sleigh!

11:52 PM
@Werner Yay!
