@LessPop_MoreFizz Yes, but... again, how is one to reply with confidence?
"I'm sure Popper Vs The World is the firstest game with bullet time. I read it on the product box, it must be true."

@badp IN this specific case, we can fairly easily say Max Payne and be done with it. The developer actually held the trademark on the term for a while, until a dispute with WB (re: the matrix) cast it into dispute

@LessPop_MoreFizz Okay, so if Large Corporation™ has a trademark or patent on stuff, they are ultimately first.

I think the number of games on a platform is inversely proportional to the quality of the average game released on it. Recently, anyway.

5:33 PM
@ArdaXi I think the platform needs a certain threshold of popularity before I would trust that rule.

Quality is almost always inversely proportional to popularity.

Looking back, I'm not sure why I said the word "popularity".
What I mean is, I can make a "platform" and write two games for it myself, and I'm betting they will on the whole be crappy.
you need a big company to create and support the platform
then your rule probably applies
but not necessarily to tiny platform that any never-heard-of-company releases.

8:37 PM
I wish he would swoop in and pick a side on the game-rec thing. that's causing a lot more immediate problems.

Sometimes Jeff picks really weird battles to throw his weight behind. Personally, I feel like he should have a second, "secret" account that he uses for stuff like this, so it doesn't get undue attention just because it has his name attached.
By all means, bring up the issue, but why should it have special weight because of the Coding Horror icon next to the question?

Oak
@sjohnston actually, to his credit, he does tend to ask for feedback from the community, and he does (sometimes) respect the community's opinions.
Remember that Jeff opposed the whole concept of a gaming SE, and here we are, running happily on his platform :)

And with the highest views of the ugly step-children.

Is it just me or does Jeff use the same arguments in response to every answer to that question?

I guess in this particular example, it seems like pretty much everyone who has bothered to answer disagrees, but he's still making the exact same arguments, with the exact same links in every thread.

8:46 PM
@sjohnston Because he has more knowledge of the interworkings of the SE engine + communities. Chances are he's thought through a lot of the basic implications of a question. Basically, he uses that account so we don't condescendingly try to explain to him how the engine he built works.
Also, how do we know he DOESN'T have an account like that?

@StrixVaria great minds think alike!
@WillfulWizard touche. Although then I would wonder what makes him post questions with one vs. the other

His arguing tactic, at least for this question, is to maintain incredulity that we believe they are of value and win by attrition (or by dictatorship).
2
"Do you want questions like this?"
The shortcomings of rhetoric.

I find it worrying that people are lashing out at Jeff essentially because he wears a diamond.
Let's not start developing an "us Gaming" vs "them StackOverflow" mentality. The question would have been as legitimate wasn't Jeff wearing his diamond.

If he didn't make the exact same argument in every comment thread, I wouldn't be so upset. But that argument had been addressed 3 different ways and he still made it again.
At that point it's not intelligent discussion any more.

<unfair-comment> @StrixVaria it's probably because you're not Weblog or Joel. </unfair-comment>
(I don't really mean the above :P)

8:50 PM
I think his arguments look the same because he's good at arguing. All arguing comes down to looking at how arguments are constructed A + B + C = D. You either disagrees with A or B or C or that they add up to D. There's nothing else you can do. He just does it directly.

He's blunt. I don't know if that makes for good argumentation, however. Stating your opinion repeatedly is not a sound debating tactic.

He's, in general, saying "I don't see how [argument] leads to [questions are good]" or "I don't see that [argument] is true."
That can be repeated for each argument without it being strict duplication. It means something different for each one

The problem is he can continue to do that ad infinitum without expending more than a minor effort.

True, which is why we should call his bluff (assuming we want such questions, I'm abstaining thus far.)

Oak and Grace spent a substantial amount of time providing detailed analysis, which he seems to discount with a wave of his hand.

8:53 PM
Ask him what data he has...
or find our own...
on how good or bad the questions really are for the site.
Do they appear on the front page too much? are they getting google hits?

I don't see how they hurt the site in moderation.

One day, he'll find hisself at a loss, trying to figure out what that awesome movie snippet he once saw on youtube and can't find anymore but totally fits this blog post he's writing.
2

I think it's kind of a moot point anyway; everyone seems to disagree with the idea that they're undesirable/bad/don't belong.

And my only comment in that meta thread counters your other point.
"Why must every single question draw traffic to the site? Is it not enough that most questions do? We can let these questions cater to the existing community on the site, and the others draw extra traffic"

Then he'll see how fun it is to be looking for something you only partially remember! :P

@WillfulWizard Dedicated domain name, because of the deals with Canonical.

Honestly, I would never have imaged that math will have two orders of magnitude more moderator-flags than any other SE-2.0 site

@WillfulWizard Not because of commercial entities :)

@Oak, no that's not something I would have predicted at all.

And I don't think we'll get to have a separate chat site after that happens.

Oak
9:38 PM
@Brant can you be more specific? I don't know what you're talking about

The one that spawned this topic:
8
Q: What's the official stance on hacked/modded consoles?

John RudyIs it legitimate for a user to ask a question about a hacked or modded game console, provided said question is about gaming on it? For example, would/should we shut down a question about running MAME on a hacked classic XBox?

Oh wait, that wasn't about mame, that was just the example.

Oak
oh, that
1. It didn't spawn that topic, it only resurfaced it - it was an older topic
2. It was self-deleted

Some users are too kind, self-deleting questions that they realize don't belong on the site x3

Wow, just got through all the math links. Kind of crazy

Kind of crazy?
This is like the most controversy I've ever seen on an SE site.
and I've seen no controversy.

Oak
Though the meta-discussions don't really give me the knowledge of what the problems really were. Why do they have so many mod-flags?

SE 2.0 has thrown a lot of new variables (and new people) into the community. I don't know if this can all be chalked up to growing pains, or if some more serious changes will need to be made.
In hindsight, everyone probably should have expected to run into difficulties. A crazy number of new sites are being created. While the population hasn't increased dramatically compared to the trilogy, the administration becomes a lot more complicated.
@Oak I don't think anyone has a really conclusive answer to that, and it's part of the problem. How do you address a problem when you can't really pinpoint what it is?

Oak
9:59 PM
@sjohnston part of the beauty of community-moderated sites (whether from community mods or just from high-rep users) is that they are very scalable.

Math is a field where people are a lot more competitive/judgmental, I think.
But that's just my own personal twist on things.
Based on the fact that I've met a lot of people taking math who will call you stupid at the first error you make.
Just because I can't add one and one together doesn't make me dumb. Geez, math people.

Oak
By the way, the biggest thing I've noticed when reading that whole math discussion, is that their font is beautiful.

So far as I can tell (having only read what I've found branched from what badp linked) one of the main problems was the idea that the moderators need to be mathematically superior to the average user, or that contributing good math is in and of itself qualification for being a moderator. Then there's a load of disputes about how the moderators behaved.
Funny thing: moderating doesn't sound like it takes a whole lot of math... quite the contrary, you have to be good with people.
I might be over generalizing... it may have come only from the one suspended user. Its hard to tell without having watched it exactly what came from who besides him

@Oak except in this case the community moderation doesn't seem to have worked well, as Jeff is currently sort of in charge, and it's not completely clear why. Who's to say this won't happen again...and again. Maybe real moderator elections will make everything better, but somehow I doubt that would really change all that much

(I'm facinated by the train wreck)

Oak
10:06 PM
@sjohnston oh yea real moderation elections are always good
Gives them a lot more... legitimacy

Not if the people choose bad moderators, like on a faulty basis

@WillfulWizard I think it's pretty interesting too, especially since this sort of stuff is likely to affect everyone if it ends up being enough of an issue. However, I am also completely out of my depth in terms of analysys or offering any useful solutions beyond what's already been discussed.

I'm not remotely close to solutions either. I'm just trying to understand.

Once again, I feel we were very lucky with our interim moderators. I have not witnessed a single complaint about their behavior. And, of course, they add considerable value to the site as individuals.

Grace and Juan are the coolest people ever.

That Oak guy's okay too I guess.

@WillfulWizard in the military, it's often more important to just have a commander. Even if he gives bad order, just the fact everyone follows them is important. Same with mods - even if they're not good, at least they have legitimacy behind their actions, granted by the community.

Yeah, we love you guys. (More cautiously, I can say I've had no problems with our mod team, except for them stealing my precious reps!)

Oak
@WillfulWizard It's your fault for giving civ4 answers to civ5 questions!

@Oak Fair point. I've played a LOT of games with no leader, and the far fewer with a leader are often simply better when everyone just goes along
@Oak They should count too! :(
Flag for moderator attention: Oak is a meanie head who takes my lunch money.
:P

It's true, I saw him do it.

@WillfulWizard Please immediately give me the details of the place where I can buy food with rep
on an unrelated note, here are 100 new questions I just came up with...

10:12 PM
LoL. Its a secret.

Oak
@sjohnston I guess you could give a large bounty over a question asking "please bring me food to this and this address". It's off-topic, true, but as long as the bounty is active it can't be voted as such.
But then again it would be flagged into oblivion...
And you can't place a bounty until 48 hours after, and it will get closed meanwhile...
but if you somehow survive those 48 years, you've got free food!

I would actually laugh if someone used SE that way

Oak
Just make sure no mod will spot you

1.) Post legitimate question. 2.) Wait 2 days 3.) Edit old question away, replace with food request and bounty. 4.) ??? 5.) Profit

Oak
distract us in chat or something :)

I guess you guys could make a proposal for Homeless People With Internet Access

@Oak reputation votes close moderator faq badges unicorns

I'm here
You need something? I see no new flags...

(Quick guys. Do it)

Just do it on meta. "Should we allow questions where people offer bounties for food?" Then offer the bounty.

10:17 PM
Actually Oak, I've been meaning to ask you for a while.

Will upvote for food.

And I'm not quite sure how to phrase it, so you're going to have to give me some time while I mule over how best to go about saying it.
But please keep your eyes glued to the screen for a while.
(now Arda gogogogo)

@Mana First, go get your mule

It's right here.

Hey wait a second

Q: Avoiding hunger in Nethack

espaisA bit of a followup from How can I tell if a corpse is safe to eat?, what is the best manner of avoiding death by hunger? Previously, I had eaten corpses and whatnot whenever I could find them, and with the info in the aforementioned post I am able to now figure out which corpses to avoid eating...

turns into "Avoiding hunger in real life"

I'm sorry Oak. I'm going back to work and not give them any more ideas that require drawing your attention.

nice

Mana actually got me, I confess
I'm so gullible.

That is important information we need to remember later.

good night Oak!

In other news
NFS:World has added a tax on events
Every event decreases your car's "durability" by 5%

so...no longer free?

The less durability, the slower your car.

oh

10:32 PM
You can get durability back, 50 ingame currency gets 5% back.
In short, you pay up 50 ingame currency per event.
Or pay 150 real life currency and stay at full durability for some time.
Or so I guess
(not sure how much money actually is 150 boost. It's probably dirt cheap, however.)
@Oak 24 hours.

Q: What does Betapropin do?

sjohnstonI'm on day 3 of the Die2nite beta, and I noticed that a "Betapropin tablet 5mg" has appeared in my inventory as a professional tool. The mouse-over description in the "Use an object from my rucksack" section states "this small tablet has a somewhat surprising effect..." What does this tablet do...
