Q: Could not find drawing tag. How to post drawing questions?

TheIndependentAquariusHow do I post the drawing questions without the drawing tag?

Q: Am sad to find the site with the name crafts.stackexchange. What about drawing?

TheIndependentAquariusWord craft does not hint drawing also. Drawing is a out making marks on paper. If you specify crafts.stackexchange, people won't automatically understand that it is about drawing also. Can something be done about the name of the site?

1:12 AM
@CreationEdge Ditto. Now I just have to think of some questions :D

user132126

I've been trying to think of them for months, and had a bunch, but... I didn't write them down

Q: Tag naming conventions

MattWe are going to see a lot of activity surrounding tags and especially in the early weeks of this site. I would like to suggest some naming conventions for tags. Please limit your suggestions to one per answer so that the community can vote accordingly for the convention.

@CreationEdge Same hear. I have been waiting for this for months and now I am drawing a blank ....hehe

Q: Why I am concerned about having only "crafts" in the url of this site

TheIndependentAquariushttp://meta.crafts.stackexchange.com/a/23/96 Robert said: But in picking a single word for the URL, a site about crafts is much less likely to cause misunderstandings and confusion. The main reason why I am concerned about having only crafts in the title is that I think that Google produce...

@Catija I get you! I just felt like clarifying for some other people.

user132126
2:28 PM
So should we be doing tag clean ups already? There's and already

2:44 PM
@CreationEdge yes that sounds like a good idea.

@CreationEdge Yes. I was trying to stop those but did it the wrong way apparently. I think arts and crafts is going to get big really fast so it would be a good idea to try and fix those ones early on.

user132126
For that I'd do crochet

user132126
But some like "drawing" make more sense to be the "ing"

user132126
And papercut should be papercutting (a papercut has different connotations).

user132126
I can't edit ATM, back to class.

2:57 PM
Well I changed them all to crotcheting...

@bowlturner Make a meta for it at this point. In the end one should be a synonym of the other.

3:17 PM
@CreationEdge early tag cleanup is easier than waiting!

user132126
I didn't know if it's part of the Beta process or not, but I will be looking at that. I'm a tag stickler on SFF

user132126
For and I think the best choice would be making them synonyms. Who can do this?

> Users with more than 1250 reputation and a total answer score of 5 or more on the tag, can suggest tag synonyms. Users with a total answer score (total upvotes minus total downvotes) of 5 or more on the tag, can vote for tag synonyms. Suggestions will be automatically approved when they reach a score of 4, and automatically deleted when they reach a score of -2.
Not yet. ;)

right, we'll have to give it a couple weeks.

we either need a moderator (or CM), or high-rep people answering questions
lol
Looks like I might need to learn a lot about different types of crafting in order to qualify for tag cleanup ^.^

user132126
3:25 PM
Okay, I'll make a meta I guess

@Zizouz212 How did you add the feeds to chat?

Q: How subjective can a Q/A get before it's too opinion-based?

EricaThis meta question was inspired by a recent site question (Out of Charcoal and Graphite pencils how do I know which to use when?) but I believe it may be likely to come up relatively often. Arts & Crafts can be a moderately subjective topic. Subjective content isn't necessarily bad for our site,...

0
Q: Can a moderator make [crochet] and [crocheting] synonyms?

CreationEdgeThere's a disparity with using crochet and crocheting. They're used about 50/50 on questions right now, sometimes doubled up. It seems like the best bet for tags like these is to make the synonyms, but no one in the community really has that ability yet.

user132126
I have a bunch of tag wikis pending, if anyone wants to look at them.

Guessing most of us need more rep for that.
Wish I had more time to help develop this site. Work sucks

right. I think we need at least 350

I don't think anyone has enough rep to review edits, either :D (500 for the Suggested Edits queue)

right. one of the site mods has been keeping up on them until we can take over.

user132126
3:45 PM
I've got some edits approved already, so that's good. I forgot about rep for privileges, I've had them for so long on other stacks.

yes I know. it's been a relearning experience

user132126
350 should be easy enough to get, I suppose. It's been a day and I'm up to 220 (so earned 120)

I'm almost there.

So few of the questions being asked are ones I can confidently answer...

@bowlturner Do you do any bowl bedazzling?

3:48 PM
I have however, maxed out my upvotes for the day, I got 40!

user132126
If I get the questions I want asked, then I think I'll get good rep.

@CreationEdge Nothing is stopping you from asking and answering those yourself :)

@Matt no. no I don't.

@bowlturner Untapped market my friend.

My one answer so far has been to my own question.

user132126
3:49 PM
@Matt Once I get the time!

@Matt not really sure I want to tap that...

user132126
I'm picking crafts.se over the new Diablo 3 patch!

@CreationEdge Let me know where I can by some

user132126
Buy some what?

@CreationEdge I believe he was wanting to know where you get your time... ;)

user132126
4:05 PM
I get it from procrastinating studying and completely homework!

user132126
4:16 PM
What do you guys think about asking for exercises to strengthen your drawing arm outside of actually drawing?

user132126
I need to build up my arm strength after inactivity from arm-related medical issues, and I don't have a lot of time to sit and draw to build up the muscles.

user132126
So when I do have the time, I'd like my muscles to be ready.

stress ball?

user132126
That could help with hand strength and grip, but I guess I'm thinking shoulder and elbow?

user132126
Holding up the pencil without arm support is killer ATM

4:20 PM
ah, isometric exercises?

user132126
That could work.

user132126
Some of my physical therapy is addressing shoulder strength, but it's pretty general. Drawing uses some different muscle parts.

Never thought of drawing as physically exhaustive... ;)

user132126
It never used to be. It's pretty frustrating :(

user132126
I did a big session a month ago or so, and I woke up the next day feeling like I'd been in a car accident (I know from experience, unfortunately)

4:25 PM
ya, accidents mess up a lot of things.

4:37 PM
I have been lucky enough to only be in one and there was no damage to myself. Car did not fair so well.

I was in 2 last fall. One totaled the truck but I didn't get a scratch, the other dislocated my collar bone (severe dislocation, still floats free) and the severity of my injuries appear to be backwards for what happened.

4:50 PM
2? Reckless driving, eh? ;)
I'd say I've never been in any, but it wouldn't be very representative.

@ArtOfCode one was weather related and the other was user error. It was actually an accident with a riding lawn mower, I got thrown down a large hill through the woods. The lawn mower almost killed me. Rolling my truck 2 and half times didn't even give me any cuts from broken glass...

@bowlturner Huh, that's pretty backwards.

yes it is

Q: What about the commitment phase questions?

MattSo there were plenty of good questions there. Would it be considered fair game to ask those on the main site now?

7:07 PM
I keep wanting to vote but need to be reminded I have use all of them for today.

yep, I'll need to go backwards tomorrow to catch some I couldn't vote on today.

Q: How do we deal with idea generation questions?

MattAs we know and will likely keep seeing as this site progresses there will be plenty of subjectivity. I anticipate that we are going to get questions along the lines of What can I do with [x] I just started using [x] and I'm addicted. What else can I do with it? Can't think of other possibilit...

Q: What should be our initial focuses for this site?

MattLikely there is a cross post meta about this so if someone is aware that would be good. Arts & Crafts has the potential to be a large and all encompassing site for several different hobbies, crafts and etc. Is there anything that we should focusing on now early in the game. I tried to get a tag...

Q: Change "pencil" to "pencils"? - Disable the "s" restriction temporarily in the closed beta?

CatijaIn general, most sites that are similar to ours prefer the plural or collective forms of nouns for tags rather than singular... e.g., on cooking, the tags are "doughnuts", "vegetables", "measurements", etc. Exceptions are made when necessary, generally when meaning is changed or when the singular...

10:22 PM
@CreationEdge HA HA I just saw this. :P

user132126
10:46 PM
Wow, I just repcapped.

user132126
At least I got the 350 privileges first.

@CreationEdge Nice! :)
I've got...
148 :)

@CreationEdge Sorry... I've been voting to try to beat the 10 minutes left before the day changes over.

user132126
I'm pretty psyched.

@Catija You have an hour and 10 minutes?

10:50 PM
Really? I thought it was at 6 pm central...

user132126
Going through the review queue now, but it's only got 1st posts right now, lol

user132126
Gotta shoot for 150 more rep tomorrow to get the suggested edit privileges.

The editing limitations are really hard... ugh. I want to edit everything I see but I don't want to swamp the queue.

@Catija Literally what I want to do too. Sucks that you can't suggest edits for meta either... some of the things are just killing me

OMG... you can't even suggest them on meta... I seriously don't get that.

user132126
10:56 PM
Yeah, it's weird.

user132126
I've never been in private beta before. But it'd make sense if a certain level of privileges were unlocked to start.

@CreationEdge Most privileges are unlocked actually

I would think so... particularly for users with X network rep to start.

Edits are the one thing that don't change though -_-
I wouldn't want edits to be at 1 - but even if they were at like 200 or 250, then that would be much better

user132126
Well, I can reasonably get edits tomorrow if things go my way. And over the weekend get approve tag wiki edits.

10:59 PM
... or you can continue it in here... It's silly to create a new chat room if you're both in here. :P

@Catija Yeah, I was thinking that too :)

Meh... I always do more in meta and since it doesn't count for beans, I'm at a disadvantage.

@Catija Feel the same too sometimes. I think at one point, I had more meta posts than main at Open Source

Anyone know when they reach out to potential mods? We only have the CMs right now.
I think the private beta is only about a week (if everything goes well)... It'd be nice to have some committed people who don't have a bajillion other sites to manage.
I'm a bit confused by the tag... I'd think of it as something to be done by kids but your question is something that's being created for kids... any thoughts?

user132126
@Catija I thought that it moved the comment thread over to chat, and didn't leave it.

11:04 PM
@CreationEdge Oh, no... only when a mod does it. They get to pick which parts of the conversation stay and which are deleted and maintained only in the chat area.

user132126
@Catija I put it there because I was hoping for suggestions, actually!

But you're not going to have the kids paint the letters on the caterpillars, right?
Or are you?

Actually, still do. 100 posts on main, 116 on meta
@Catija If it helps, 3D printing hasn't gotten mods after 90 days

user132126
No, but it needs to be durable for their use, and readable for them, so I'm not sure.

@Catija They extended it to 3 weeks

11:05 PM
@Zizouz212 Wait... seriously? Wow.

@Catija Yeah, I know. Kind of feel bad for them
And I honestly don't know why they have no mods yet

@CreationEdge Yeah, I still don't think that would apply... we can certainly make a Meta question about it to see what the consensus is in the community... and then we need a good tag excerpt so that it's used correctly.
@Zizouz212 Do they have people who would be good mods?

@Catija Actually, yes. There's a few people there that I really like

user132126
On parenting there's an age-appropriate tag, but that's still too generic.

user132126
But I'm interested in asking about kids projects in the future, ones they'll do themselves.

11:07 PM
It's probably useful - the tags will imply answers and stuff should be kid-friendly

@CreationEdge Yeah... that sounds more like "kids' crafts" to me.

user132126
I agree.

user132126
I can remove it from mine from now, since it's almost incidental to the question, anyway.

Well, there's also "kid safe"... which could limit answers to things that are non-toxic, safety scissors, etc...

@Catija Yeah, I think the benefit really comes there
I'd keep it since it signals the audience for the craft. May actually be useful in taking to meta

11:10 PM
Also, there's fabric paints... which might work better and be easier to apply.

Well... Time to bring about a wave of downvotes

user132126
I think it's important even here to avoid those link-only answers.

user132126
I don't know how many art tutorials I've had bookmarked over the years that have just vanished into the ether.

Honestly, if we're already getting stuff like that in private beta, it starts to worry me
And then the nonsense where people up vote everything that they see, and their reason is "private beta! We need votes"

user132126
I like the questions, but not enough answers yet to weed many out.

11:20 PM
Link only answers are not answers... the Meta SE answer by Shog on the "Your answer is in another castle" is my go-to link for any that I see.

user132126
The one that comment linked to basically told us nothing, anyway. It needs some improvement, regardless.

@Zizouz212 Was that deleted? I don't see it any more.

Yep. Looks like it
Must of seen my comment

Ugh... that edit. No... asking an entirely new question in your question does not make it less broad. meh.

Oh dear. What edit?

11:23 PM
On that question you linked.

Oh. I know what you're talking about
sigh

Q: Is there a way to determine the fiber content of a yarn if I've lost the label?

BSMPI try to keep the label that comes with the yarn I buy but I do have a few balls of yarn where the label has disappeared and I don't have an additional, unused ball (that would still have the label). Is there a way to tell what fiber(s) a yarn has if I've lost all the documentation for it?

Nice self answer
Huh... I downvoted something and didn't get the critic badge... anyone else? Is it question/answer dependent?

user132126
Same.

user132126
I think it must be questions.

@Catija Caching?

user132126
11:30 PM
I must've rolled over to next day because I missed the "use your 40 votes" thing, too

It's any downvote

user132126
Or, not. 38/40 now.

@CreationEdge half an hour left!

@CreationEdge did you make certain to get your question upvotes in there first?
@Zizouz212 I definitely got the "if you think this post could be improved" popup after DVing...

Weird. When did you vote? Critic should be awarded for any downvote

11:31 PM
About... 20 minutes ago?

Bad caching.
Bad bad caching. No other reason for it

Hmmm. ok. I'll keep an eye on it, though.

A: Which kind of tool can be used to spread one oil pastel colour over another?

Zizouz212With oil pastels, I've actually found that using an eraser will help smudge it. If you have a fine eraser, that's decently thin, you should be able to use it to smudge in small areas. When you want to move on to another colour, you may need to eraser the tip off, but it lasts a good while and it...

Q: Your answer is in another castle: when is an answer not an answer?

Shog9I think we can all agree, this sucks: If you've been around a little while, you've probably encountered hundreds of answers like this in various forums, some of them even marked as "The Answer" by well-meaning1 forum admins looking to close a thread. We could try to enumerate the commonly-obse...

That crochet answer is definitely link-only.

I really need to figure out more crafting questions, I'm never going to get enough rep for review queues at this rate :D

user132126
Is Robert Shog's boss?

11:39 PM
@CreationEdge They're both community managers
But Shog is shog

@CreationEdge I don't know what their tree looks like. They may be in similar positions but different focuses. I know Robert is focusing on new communities. He's generally in charge of Area 51 and all of the uber beta sites. Shog is more general.

user132126
I wondered because of the "Director" title.

And Shog is apparently sick. :( Or was yesterday. Poor guy.

user132126
Not that it matters, I was just curious!

Director?

11:41 PM
@CreationEdge Yeah, that's where Area 51 and the beta sites come in.
@Zizouz212 On any of his site profiles.

Not on meta?

He created the first-ish account here.
It's there when I look at it.

Oh robert
I thought you were talking about shog

Oh, no :D

I was like "wat?"

11:43 PM
And now they're probably both watching everything we're saying...
Four votes left...

No votes

@Catija it's not paranoia if they're actually watching ;)

@Erica Oh, no, not paranoia... I know that they have scripts that ping them if their UNs get mentioned... Shog shows up after he's been mentioned too often for that to not be the case.

Shog! Shog! Where are you Shog!
I'm pinging the Shog of the Shogs!
Where are you oh Shog9?

He's sick... let him rest.

We're waiting for you!
Awaiting your arrival oh Shog!

See, he says so here:

Shog9Couple of quick notes here since I'm sick and probably can't write a coherent essay on this: Flag types exist to direct and differentiate folks' desire to see problems addressed You look at a post and say to yourself, "there's a problem here". Maybe it's a problem you can fix; if so, there's an...

Nice :D

user132126
@Catija Yeah, even if there's no "9" attached!

user132126
I've seen regular users do that, too, so I wonder!

@CreationEdge Indeed... I've never noticed a non-CM do it but I don't pay that much attention.
I didn't even get your ping until I came in here, despite being in chat on other sites... without the superping, it doesn't notify people.

11:55 PM
Superping?
Ooh... Being blue comes with superpowers

@Zizouz212 You are blue...

lots and lots of superpowers

I have no superpowers. :( I have tried twice and failed.

user132126
So many mods from other stacks on this site. I feel my chances slipping!

@CreationEdge lol I wouldn't worry about it

11:57 PM
Nah... a lot of mods don't want to pick up the mantle in other communities...
And with a new site, there's likely a ton to have to do.

Actually, the only mods I know that I've seen around here is @Erica and I

Rumi from Cooking asked a question.

And besides, you two look like friendly people :)

@Zizouz212 yay, my disguise is working B)

user132126
Bowlturner and artofcode Were in here earlier.

Oh, and @bowlturner too :)

user132126
I'm just stoked about this stack!

user132126
Art is my passion, even if I can't do it like I want to.

@CreationEdge I love art too... Too bad my art teachers would always give me a 60

community moderation is almost more key than having moderator super powers

11:59 PM
So, what do we think of questions about drawing methodologies and such?

I am too... I really only do crochet but I'm excited about the site in general and getting to participate from the outset.

@Erica Yep, but there needs to be both. I have no clue how 3d printing is surviving right now

@Erica That's why I spend so much time on Meta.

user132126
Not about the powah, for me, but a way to contribute
