@JohnGB this is interesting given the topic came up during the election:

Q: Is there a concise word or phrase for making something dynamic?

Matt SteinNot sure if this is more appropriate for Stack Overflow, but I'm a web nerd constantly using the invented word dynamic-ify to describe taking a flat, static web page and converting it into something that can be edited dynamically with a content management system. Is there an actual word or short...

are questions about what to call things on topic-ish? I was having a conversation with a coworker today about what terms should be used to describe things and we ended up agreeing that some aspects of UX are still very much being defined by the community
so in these cases there are a collection of terms and phrases that represent overlapping concepts
correctly describing things in order to communicate is an important part of the practice of UX, but I'm not sure the question above "feels" like it would be on topic
(all this might be better as a meta post but i'm just throwing it out here first)

@CharlesWesley I don't see anything wrong with that question.
Having a common terminology is important for UX, and very often there is no canonical source for it. I don't see why that source can't be UX.se

The first user reaching 50k is (not suprisingly) @JohnGB - Congratulations!

Thanks Benny
Now to 100k :)

@JohnGB We will receive e-mails from community managers from time to time checking up on how we're doing. Then we can reply with such a request...
It won't take 4 years to get there, I guess :-)
100k

@BennySkogberg Okay, so let's make sure all the mods have a plan that they would like to suggest for upping the questions.
Depends on how hard I work. It can be done in a year. When I'm paying attention I usually max out the 200 each day.

@JohnGB Sure! We could ask the community if they want it in meta if all the mods agree that this is a good strategy

@BennySkogberg And 50k exactly too. I bet that doesn't happen often.

9:34 AM
Okay, but let's have something coherent to suggest.
If it wasn't 50k exactly I would have had to start again to make it so.
Or go on a downvote spree :)

@JonW Not really. But it's controllable through a few down-votes :-)
LOL

@BennySkogberg I like to refer to my reputation as my 'downvote pot'.

I see the stats who uses the down-vote button a lot :)

"Look at how many downvotes I can do now!" ;)
Nothing wrong with downvoting. In fact I don't think people do it enough.

True! I think you are the downvoting #1 here with 1049 in total :)
I only have 217 - need to shape up ...
Is there a limit on downvotes too? Like 40 a day (provided that you vote on 10 questions)?

9:41 AM
Yup, I don't downvote enough
Part of it is that it's often a first question that needs help, and I don't want to discourage a new person with a downvote right off the bat.
I'm clearly too nice

Being a mod though means anything else I do is binding. So I can't vote to close/delete and see what the community think, unlike everyone else. So downvoting is really one of the only non-binding options we have.

That's true! Good advice

@JonW That's true.
There should be a way of voting like a normal user if it's borderline, or hard closing like a mod.

Q: Should a list of team members be divided into sections and years?

OokerOur project team is divided into sections: core team, fundraising, representatives, media, etc. We want to show the member list each year so that visitors can see who is behind the project, and to serve as a reference for later. Currently, to see the names of members, visitors need to click on t...

I'm not familiar with the chat, so apologize for any inconvenience @JohnGB
thanks for your help
I don't think org chart is good cause we don't need the relationship between members

12:32 PM
No proble @Ooker
It's more of a general hangout for UX stuff.
@Ooker Maybe you could explain exactly what it is that the organisation does and how it's structured.

2:09 PM
@JohnGB I would say our team is more like a company rather than a highshool, but it's not like a typical company. It only produces one product per year. People can join in the middle of the work year, but hardly quit until that year ends since we have commitments to prevent that.
the organization is a volunteer group
we only produce one product per year

So how is an org map not relevant then?
You undertake a project and have some sort of organisational structure I presume

cause it focus so much on the relationship
we only need the relationship between sections

An org map isn't necessarily a hierarchical map
You can show relationships within sections and between sections just fine with it.

is there an example for that?
oh, can it be something like the mind map?
the leader will be on the center
other core members will be around that person
then each teams will be in derivative branches?

It can be in any way that makes sense for your org structure
You can even have an org chart for a completely flat organisation like a volunteer group
Here an example, although this is terrible design wise:

2:19 PM
LOL
where do you get that?
I can see why it is a terrible design
but the concept seems to be good?

The concept simply shows what can be done in an org chart.
You can take the idea and implement it in something visually appealing.
I found it with my Google-fu

LOL
I found this link when searching your image
I think I'll spend time reading it before raising any questions

2:53 PM
Okay, that's worth doing. Just feel free to use any design elements that communicate relationships or grouping. Don't feel you have to stick to how fortune 500 companies do things.
Hey Colin, long time no see.

hey
youre on twitter anyway
had hilarious close shave during a research phone call. Turns out the person I rang is taking part in the UAT of the very competitor we're researching against. I almost got their test address and now know their due date.

I'm on twitter?
I probably should open it up more than once every 6 months :)

arent you?
aye, you are, just checked

I am, but I'm one of those rare twitter visiters

so I see!
I hardly come here now

3:02 PM
Not as interesting in my absence?

no
what you working on anyway?

Right now I'm having fun doing more backend work
Lots of Go programming.
Writing the backend for a messenger application.

hear about wattsapp's online disaster?

Nope, what happened?

3:10 PM
Why would they do that?
Seems like a daft idea

last cartoon says it all

I actually understand technically why they made those choices, but closing the API to other developers seems daft

3:46 PM
what about QR scanning to activate?
whats wrong with typing in a registration number>?

That's just engineers getting ahead of themselves.
Oooooh, oooh, let's do QR codes scanning!
Why?
Because we can!

4:01 PM
I saw a QR code on a can of airfreshner
And I was so taken aback I downloaded a QR scanner and scanner it
it went to a non mobile optimised website about air freshners
it was so sad

:)
And you know they probably spent a million $ on that
Because it's needed for sales.
I know a local company that spent 9 million € on a mobile app that just listed their products.

I blogged about it. tragic

No purchasing, no normalising information.

and you couldnt buy

Just: Here's a list of our products.

4:09 PM
9 million

Nope.

special

That was too advanced for only 9 million €
And it took about 18 months

"we want a fully searchable list of all our products that people can save and sort"
"and ultimately do fuck all with"

Not save and sort.
Only browse through
Like a hierarchical list.
And then do fuck all with, yes.

4:13 PM
ahhahahaa knobs

And then they want to spend a few million on "promotion and viral advertising" to get users to like it and share with their friends.
Hey, look. A list of stuff... AWESOME!

hey! John! GUESS WHAT?? waves picture of toaster on iphone
are they still in business?

They are indeed... but not because of their IT savvy :)
Off to church this evening with my partner.
The Netherlands has the best church designs

what is that?

A church converted in one massive trampoline play area :)

4:25 PM
so youre not actually off to church, youre off to bounce around

Well, it is a church
They just don't do churchy things there.
Although they do take your money, so I suppose they do some churchy things there

right

Wordsmithing question. A button on a web site says "Submit request". I don't quite like the word "submit". It sounds too hierarchical/medieval, like "Submit to thy Lord!". Are there better words? For instance, the button next to this text box says "send".

3 hours later…
10:00 PM
@NickAlexeev depends on the context, really. Submit is fine for forms--that's what you do with forms. Send is fine for messages, "confirm" can work for updating something like a profile.
I've seen "go" for searches, usually a descriptive verb that reasonably matches the action you're performing by clicking the button

10:49 PM
@BenBrocka The button sends RFQ (request for quote) for quoting. Essentially, this is a very detailed contact us form.
