Hey, anyone around? I was wondering if UX.SE took critique questions like Graphic Design does. I implemented a design pattern that I have never tried before and would be interested in feedback from this crowd!

Hi @Brendan
I'm afraid that we don't take those sorts of questions. Although I can see value in them, we don't want to become a critique site, where people come for free UX consulting. The site is aimed more at people that are interested in UX and who are asking narrow questions that will be useful to other people.
Critique like questions are mostly useful to the person asking the question, and not to other readers of the question.

Q: 'My Account' or 'Your Account'?

fredleyI want to put a link to an account page in a toolbar. What person should I use to refer to the user's settings? Should I call it 'My Account' or 'Your Account'? I've seen both is use, and I'm not sure which one is correct, or even better.

What is the reasoning behind not being able to migrate questions that are 60 days or older?
To me, all these "this word" vs "this word" questions belong on English.SE unless they are really tied to a specific User Experience issue.

Q: Disable migration for questions older than 60 days

Shog9This has come up a few times now: migrating old questions causes problems. The most popular solution to this to date has been to reset votes on migrated posts. This is do-able, but frankly it feels like treating a symptom, and doing so in a way that penalizes folks who answer what are by all ap...

@JonW Ok ... so if we are saying this all because reputation, badges, etc., should we close them as off-topic here and just leave them here, but not flag for migration?

Depends if they're definately off-topic or not. Might be worth a meta post to see what the community think of such questions and whether they can be edited to be made more on-topic of people think they're not currently.

@JonW You think that would be best served on MSE or our meta?

@JohnGB Okay. Thanks for the response!

@CodeMaverick Our one as it's only specific to this UX site.

@JonW Alright ... I'll ask.

Q: Since we can't migrate off-topic questions older than 60 days, what should we do with them?

Code MaverickThe reason I have come to asking this question is due to the plethora of questions that are of the effect of "this word" vs "that word". These types of questions really belong on English.SE unless they are actually on-topic due to a specific UX.SE reason. Examples There might be some actual on...

There it is

Yeah, I was just reading that. I think it comes across that you've already made the decision that these questions aren't suitable for UX, whereas I'm not so sure. I'd reword the question into two part really. a) Are these type of questions suitable? and b) if no, then what should we do with them.

Questions like this: ux.stackexchange.com/questions/72555/… are ones I'd consider borderline, but the 'OK/Cancel on buttons' one seems a great fit for UX.

reworded
sure, that's why I stated some of the questions might be on topic
the question lies in what to do with the ones that aren't?

It's quite difficult to judge really. Either these questions are a labeling issue where one phrase/word is right in one place and completely off at another place. It depends on users ontology really. Labeling is definately UX, but I'm not sure if X vs. Y makes a good question.

4:55 PM
I know ... it' a tough call ... but English.SE deals with these all day long
that's why I think they'd fit better there
they get into the origins, etymology, etc.

True! And I had fun reading all the clever answers there. So if it's obvious it's an English.SE question > migrate if Q=<60 days. Otherwise - let them be.

but i can also see how after that's determined ... it would pass onto a UX.SE question in that what do users "prefer" and what is the "statistical research" that proves one is better to use than the other

Stats only work on open web pages and not on user account only sites. Then you need to survey the users of that site, and such stats are hard to come by if you're not a user yourself. And even then it can be difficult if the site is an enterprise.

very true ...
which makes it even more opinion based

It's like the questions "Why did Google change it's design to X?" type of question
Opinions

5:01 PM
If all a question does is generate opinions, then, to me, it should be closed as off-topic
right ... those should be closed

yet ... they generate TONS of views, hit the Hot Network Question jackpot
and ... then what?

It's the famous blog post, "Bad subjective, Good Subjective"
Robert Cartaino on September 29, 2010

Stack Exchange is about questions with objective, factual answers. We’ve been crystal clear about this for as long as I can remember, even back to the earliest, pre-beta days of Stack Overflow. It’s right there in the standard Stack Exchange FAQ:

What kind of questions should I not ask here?

Avoid asking questions that are subjective, argumentative, or require extended discussion. This is not a discussion board, this is a place for questions that can be answered!

Thus, questions that are not answerable — discussions, debates, opinions — should be closed as subjective. It seems simple enough: Fact good; opinion and discussion bad. But why? …

@CodeMaverick We're slaves to the fact "All publicity is good" :-)

true
so then it seems we give in to popular demand ... if it's highly voted ... leave it alone ??
i love that Purity webcomic by xkcd, one of my favs

Since we are small and insignificant on the web - yes. But I had a bad "gone viral" question a while ago which was actually closed by @JonW. It was done very correct and I had the chance to comment before it got closed. Great moderation there...

Q: Why do we say we "browse" to a place on the Internet when we actually download a web server’s content to our browser?

Benny SkogbergBrowsing the web is a common daily task for more than a billion users, and we do not pay much attention to it. We just “browse to a place” or ask our laughing friend across the table “where she is on the Internet” since we might want to “visit the same place” having the same experience she’s havi...

That sounds like a great Area 51 site we should call, "Things that make you go ... hmmm?"
Then all of the Why does/did X do Y questions can fit under that umbrella lol
Not to re-hash the question, but it's interesting, and I think the correct answer to that is that if we call our applications browsers, they have to browse, right? If not, we shouldn't call them browsers. Pitchers, pitch. Catchers, catch. Shooters, shoot. Etc. Therefore Browsers, browse, and they browse the internet via the HTTP Verbs: GET and POST.

@CodeMaverick Or Spartan ^^
But your site already exists where they discuss conspiracy theories, doubtful facts and UFO:s. It's fun to read once in a while.
On question we still need here, is this one:
