also, the number 1600 seems...arbitrary.

according to my admittedly limited knowledge of political history, any attempt at pinpointing a root cause to these sorts of things just unravels a hundred new causes going back years and so on. it's far more likely a "perfect storm" of multiple influences exploding at once than any one pinpointable ground zero.
