I mean if I ask mkdir to create a folder name with an invalid Unicode sequence will that sequence be stripped or turned into a ?. I...

@user2284570 I'd still disagree with reopening that question with the cross-post still open on Super User. Apart from that, there doesn't appear to be any attempt to answer any of patrix's concerns with the question which is why it was put on hold. @grgarside : the question is simple what are the other characters that are stripped by Darwin like 0x200c
0x200c=ZERO WIDTH NON-JOINER
and does this same rule applies to invalid Utf‑8 sequences  or do such sequences are converted a question mark ?
