@JasonSalaz i see. he just put a generic comment (or so it seemed) in the reject reason dialog

he used one of the pre-filled options, yes.
ooooh, what's this
neat, imma try it out.

2:21 AM
I want a bounty feed...

2:34 AM
@JasonSalaz What does the feed do that you added to the room feeds?
Is that just a feed of the main site?
So, questions posted...etc...?

Yes
I wonder if the overlay is temporary and that's why I haven't seen it.

2:50 AM
Looks like they stack in the corner if the window is inactive.

wow
that's really obnoxious
I'm going to shut that off.

Jason Salaz has stopped a feed from being posted into this room

3:25 AM
@jtbandes darn it, you just posted a comment six seconds prior to mine that asked the same basic question. Stop reading my mind.

Probably should have asked before asking that screen saver question huh?

Anyone know how to shut off this guy in Mountain Lion? Chess enabled it:
Chess is closed, but voice input won't go away.

10:16 AM
System Preferences -> Accessibility -> Speakable Items

Does a Mac notebook come with an iLife installation DVD? I can't find my iLife '11 DVD

Not any more
If it came with any discs, then it should come with iLife ones, but post Lion they stopped shipping with Media, and merely use the App Store.
So if your Macbook came with Lion, then head of to teh store and redownload.
@Pro_backup - lots of nice edits recently :)

1:30 PM
@stuffe Mine came with Snow Leopard

Than you should have disks, and you cannot download from the MAS :/

2:22 PM
@BoltClock Generallly no. Most recent macs (that were before the electronic download era) have one DVD with both apps and OS.

Hey Mike

@stuffe Are you OK with that edit I made to your answer?
And how are you? Summer has been hot, hot and hotter. Are you all done with the rains?

2:40 PM
@bmike 50:50, takes it a bit more technical that I intended

@stuffe Feel free to roll it back now or later.
I can always add an answer that addresses both.

@bmike Still raining, not so bad these past few days
still, olympics not too badly affected thus far

The question itself was off topic - why did apple X is speculative - so I was editing it to be more technical and you picked up on it :-)
@stuffe Can you make any of the events?

Yeah, we have basketball semi finals

Awesome! I was trying to hard to get there and help my friend that has credentials to take photos - but it wasn't in the cards.

2:43 PM
I tried to answer it as if they ask "why is is asking", not "why did they make it ask", if you see what I mean

Perhaps I can make it to Rio in 4 years with him.

I so want to see the track and field, I am thinking of doing the paralympics just to get in the stadium for a day
I love olympics
Another Team GB gold soming up n 3 minutes :)

@stuffe I love the sports that get play as part of the olympics movement.
@stuffe Is the BBC web streaming good? I'm thinking of renting a server in a London data center but haven't bothered yet...

Oh yes, every event, live, HD, no adverts.
if you can get a VPN, do it
GOLD!
and SILVER!
2 man canoe sprint :)

I love getting to see football, handball, water polo, basketball and other sports on TV all together that make me realize just how many variants there are on the same game of "put the ball in the goal"
field hockey
Then there's all the variants on "get to the finish line before anyone else"
And all the variants on "put on a nice show"
It's like there are a few superclasses that the various events subclass.

2:52 PM
I want the oatmeal to do an infographic venn diagram of sports
1) I'm faster than you
2) I'm going to kill you

3) I'm going to show off more than you (gymnastics)

3) I'm using this ball as a metaphor for killing you
4) I'm prettier than you

6) I'm stronger than you

@stuffe football (Certain teams in particular…)

ha ha - I'd put #6 as #2 along the continuum: kill you for real (boxing, judo, fencing) - kill you potentially - to #3 as the metaphor for killing you
Our natives used lacrosse as a better way to war when they weren't too pissed off at each other.

2:57 PM
im thinking weightlifting

@stuffe OK - it's not like they ever drop the weights on anyone but themselves or a judge

Or are these axes rather than Venn Diagram circles?
The show-off axis, the "kill you" access, etc.?

dunno, but the punchline could be trying to categorise synchronised swimming...

Daniel L on August 02, 2012

I’m not an early adopter. I’m not a big fan of change. I still have a computer running Panther, if that says anything about my rate of technological uptake. I’m still using a cell phone that just has 12 keys on the front plus a power button and a send button.

But Wednesday morning as soon as I saw the notification in the App Store that it was available, for some crazy reason, I took the plunge and upgraded to Mountain Lion. I’ve never been a first day user of an operating system before. Why did I do it? Well, mostly because I knew there would be questions on Ask Different and I thought it would be fun to be able to answer them. …

@DanielLawson I suppose you could put the sports as close to the center of the circle as they are to the idea?
I'm really bummed I can't make this course in August....

3:12 PM
Another SILVER in womens Judo :)
Oh, and another GOLD on skeet (I think it's called)
don't often beat the yanks at shooting stuff
3

3:25 PM
@bmike Wow, that looks amazing.

3:41 PM
@DanielLawson Yes - not sure if I'll try to get to NYC or SF - but I think I want to attend that course.
@stuffe Why does judo issue two bronze metals? Seems odd to not hand out one metal like the rest of the events.

presume because there is no fight-off for the 2 losing semi finalists
not sure why
probably because G S B is a very olympic thing, and in normal competition Judo when you are out, you are out, and there is no concept of 3rd
I'll ask the neighbour, their 14 year old was the UK champion in her age group until she reached the under 16s

4:19 PM
Hey, has anyone found a way to connect google voice to the telephone app on the mac. I would love a tutorial. I keep finding links to gizmo5. But that has been discontinued. Let me know.

4:40 PM
What's the telephone app on the Mac?

4:51 PM
@user1048138 Googling for "google voice os x" gives some interesting links, did you look at them already?

R.M
My new retina MBP on ML says that this SMC update is not compatible with my system... does it mean that it is supported natively? Any way of confirming?

5:22 PM
@patrix Thought so, but Speakable Items are off!

6:00 PM
@Moshe And you probably already tried to turn them on and off again, hmm.
pkill SpeakableItems works as well :-)

6:16 PM
@Moshe sudo rm -Rf /Applications/Chess.app/; sudo shutdown -r now should make the problem go away :-) (don't really do that)

6:28 PM
Ah, thanks.
Reboot did it.
Question - anyone know if there's a way to put iTunes notifications back in the dock in Mountain Lion? (As documented here and everywhere else on the internet.)

Q: iTunes track notifications for Mountain Lion

Matt ThomasIn OS X Lion there was the preference (via a terminal command) to enable iTunes track notifications that were displayed as a popup in the dock. So far it seems as though Mountain Lion does not allow this, I was wondering if anyone knew whether the command had changed or if this is just not possi...

@patrix Thanks.
Also, where does Time Machine put my private keys?

Q: Private Keys and Time Machine?

MosheI've used Time Machine on my Mac to perform backups of my Lion install. My SSD failed and I installed Mountain Lion on my machine. Now, I want to recover my private key from my backup so I can continue to sign my iOS apps without having to regenerate all of the certificates and provisioning profi...

Hey, in the terminal, what does the "x" command do?

@Vap0r nothing?

It and "w" appear to be the only single character commands.

6:42 PM
w displays who's logged in and what they're doing

@Moshe, when you enter a-z, one at a time, all error, other than "x" and "w"

@Vap0r I see the same error for x.

Hmmm.
@Moshe, How do I find out why x isn't erroring for me? I'm assuming it's a program somewhere, how do I find out where "x" goes when I type it in my terminal?

@Vap0r Type "man x" and see what it says.

@Moshe No manual entry for x.

6:45 PM
Ok, so it's not a command.
Perhaps you've got a program or library installed that utilizes x.

@Vap0r x is /opt/X11/bin/x

Oh, yea, was gonna say, x might be the X11 windowing system.

type x gives the path/source of commands

@patrix oh, that makes sense, I installed x11 for a couple of programs that I needed.
@patrix just tried out that command, right you are.
Thanks guys!

This is an outstanding answer. Way to do the research here:

A: Can we still upgrade to OS X 10.7 now that 10.8 is out?

de_an777Although you can no longer buy Lion through the App Store or directly by SKU from the online store, you can still order Lion after Mountain Lion was released. I called 1-800-MY-APPLE, it took some time to get through but they told me that I would be able to purchase Lion, OSX 10.7 from them for ...

10:11 PM
@DanielLawson Yeah. Nice one!
Hey @Moshe! I am looking at getting started in iOS programming. Can you recommend some good resources? I'm completely new to Objective-C, though I did use C++ a little. Other than that, my only other programming experience has been as a LAMP programmer.

10:38 PM
Hey @jrg!
And @NathanGreenstein

jrg
@daviesgeek do you have anything else to do with your day other than sit and stalk those who enter the chatroom? ;)
anyway, how are you? :)

@jrg Yes. I do. I just happen to be stalking the AD chatroom today. :-P

jrg
@daviesgeek Heh.

@jrg Good, and you? Whatcha been up to?

jrg
@daviesgeek Tired, busy, and wishing I had broken down and taken a certain job that I didn't enjoy last year. :P

10:42 PM
@jrg Sounds like fun!!
Do you school through the summer?

jrg
I guess that's one way of looking at it. ;P
Sorta kinda.

@jrg I see...
For me, the summer just started....
Then school starts for real in about a month...

jrg
Depends on what is going on. Phys ed is called "hiking", programming is called "Logic", all the summer reading I do is called "English", and whatever else I do just kinda counts. :P
wow. that... sucks.

Ah. So you don't have "real schoolwork". :-)

jrg
not that pre-se. shrugs

10:47 PM
Fun, fun, fun!
I gotta get back to loading songs on my sister's MP3 player, so I will TTYL!

jrg
oh, and this year my self employment counted as economics. Granted, I'm woefully behind on math and science, but I can balance a checkbook, thus making my life as a hobo complete!
@daviesgeek Sweet! Have fun, ttyl!

@jrg Nice! I'm behind in math too... :-]
Not particularly happy about that, but being homeschooled means you can catch up!
3 pages of math a day all around!!
Anyhow... Bye!

jrg
cya!

So, I just found out by accident that the magnets that hold the glass on my iMac are great for hanging headphones from for storage...

lol
now I want to try this.

jrg
10:57 PM
Wait, really?

@daviesgeek Big Nerd Ranch books are excellent.

Due to lighting, the bottom of the screen blended in with the wall beside it.
I wonder if the thunderbolt display is the same
probably not, since it doesn't have the same frame design.
and it doesn't need to be given nearly as much non-display component space as the iMacs' do.

I think 2010 andnewer models extend the glass to the edges, no alu' surround
Right, gotta go get my beauty sleep.
Gawd knows I need it.

11:44 PM
anyone here experiencing ML putting your system to sleep when you use CTRL+SHIFT+EJECT to put your display to sleep?
i use this method everytime i walk away from my desk... but now sometimes when i come back i find that i was logged out of all my chat services, etc... seems as though the system is going to sleep as well, didnt work like this in Lion

@ChrisWagner sounds like your system is going to sleep.
And not just your display.
Check energy saver?

@JasonSalaz yeah, energy saver settings look fine, the thresholds are high enough that the system should not be going to sleep

Q: System sleeping when putting display to sleep in Mountain Lion

Flash84xIn Lion I always used CTRL+SHIFT+EJECT to put my display asleep when I walked away from my computer. The system would continue running and not go to sleep. Now in Mountain Lion when I put the display to sleep the system decides to go to sleep as well, sometimes. It does not happen all of the ...
