Q: How do I use an iPhone on the TracFone network?

daviesgeekI am looking to buy a used iPhone for use on the TracFone network. I am pretty sure that it will run on the network. According to eHow, I can do it with a jailbreak and according to another eHow article, AT&T phones work. Can someone point me in the right direction? Which version of the iPhon...

@JasonSalaz @daviesgeek seems fine; en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi_boot

hi
what?
good enough for me

holy good god that emoji is HUGE

For anyone with edit privileges for FAQ, a minor issue, probably formatting: apple.stackexchange.com/faq#questions omits a paragraph in its highlighting. If not a highlighting issue, then maybe that one paragraph should have its own link in the list of contents
@JasonSalaz just put the thumb up a little higher to puncture it on the bottom of my √
it'll deflate nicely.

4:09 AM
lol
what's this about a highlighting issue on the FAQ?
Oh, I see.
That's strange.
that's a engine issue, should happen on other sites
it's in a section that is uneditable

@JasonSalaz maybe arose when someone edited out the reference to Jeopardy!

doubt it
it's just static text
well, if you mean a diamond, then no
it should be a SE staff issue.

@JasonSalaz Diamond? /me goes to look

Yeah, it's an overall SE issue

@JasonSalaz Oh yeah. Sorry. A few weeks without diamond and Psi thinking. I'm with you know.

4:14 AM
that sentence was very hard to understand ~_~. But I did.
And the CHAOS folks haven't had their Psi-forks in some time.
The end of that sentence probably should have read: "I'm with... you know."

@JasonSalaz oh I'm even more behind the times then!

yeah, loooong time ago

I blame cats for waking me at 04:00. Bleary eyed
… with you *now

OH
with you now, as in understanding!

@GrahamPerrin Ah. I see. Good.

4:16 AM
I thought you were saying "I'm with stupid."
4AM indeed...

@JasonSalaz Thanks for the answer.
I 'preciate it.

well 'yer welcome, partner.
Since we suddenly have a southern drawl in here...

Did ya see my comment on yer answer?
@JasonSalaz :-)

@JasonSalaz so for that minor highlighting issue in FAQ, should I leave a note for someone in a different chat room? chat.stackexchange.com/rooms I'm not sure which … TIA

@GrahamPerrin I'd write it up on [meta.so]
slkgjlakrjglkrj what on earth is that stupid short code.
[meta.stackoverflow]
I'm bad at this.

4:22 AM
I couldn't even figure out how to do it the other day.

@JasonSalaz well if you will use that swollen thumb for typing …

I give up. And I blame Joel Spolsky.

seriously?
that's absolutely absurd
/me sighs

yah.
really absurd.

ANYWAYS. @GrahamPerrin I'd write the issue up on Meta Stack Overflow

Logs are a fascinating thing.

oh gosh that last one is so true

So, I'm looking at the prices of used iPhone 4Ses in our area and they are expensive! Do I need to pay the extra $100 to get the 4S, or will I be fine with the 4? I don't think I'll need (or use) Siri, as I won't have 3G. I would love the camera on the 4S, but it isn't worth an extra 100.

Also, make sure to hover for the alt text!
@daviesgeek If you can wait until the next iPhone comes out, the prices will drop dramatically. If you can't, I'd still go with the 4S
but then again, I'm spoiled like that.

@JasonSalaz Yah. I just listed my iPod for sale...however, if it doesn't sell, I might (just might) wait. I was also thinkin' the same thing...
My problem is waiting.....I can't wait that long!!!!!
Upgrading from a click wheel iPod to an iPhone is huge leap and I can't wait!
Then again, when the iPhone 5 comes out, I'll really want that too, and I won't want the 4S....
Man, even the iPhone 4s are expensive...$300 for a 32GB
Then again, paying $549 for an unlocked one is the other solution...
@JasonSalaz Shoot, you had to make me think...now I'm regretting listing it...

6:00 AM
I'm good at that

Yah. You are. Well...maybe if I sell it now, I can wait 2 months. HOW CAN I LIVE WITHOUT AN IPOD????
(I can't)
Thinking optimistically here, the Craigslist ad is up for 45 days. If someone buys it in 45 days, then I won't have to wait 2 months...only 1 month...even so...............

It's tomorrow already, where's my Mountain Lion...

10am pacific

Bah, don't give me your fancy fake time zones. We use GMT here, AKA "normal time" ;)

I love UTC
I hate GMT

(let's not mention BST that we are currently using)

because the home of GMT, the name sake, OBSERVES DAYLIGHT SAVINGS! :(

9:06 AM
There are talks to bin it.
No-one wants it.
It makes it go dark far too early.
It was only brought in during one of the wars to give farmers more daylight to dig for Britain...
(or something)
Anyway, got be very early for you guys?

3AM mountain time

What the hell is mountain time?
(and why are you still up?)

Mountain Daylight Time. In November it goes back to Mountain Standard Time.
named mostly because the rocky mountains (the rockies) penetrates a significant majority of the time zone.

Well I never.

I'm still up because... my sleep schedule is totally jacked and I haven't done anything to correct it.

So who's going to post the question to collect the awesomeness of ML?
Didn't Daniel post such a question before? I remember that it was closed, but it seems like he deleted it. Will he undelete the question? If searched for it, but not found it.
@DanielLawson ping

@gentmatt not me

Today Mountain Lion OSX is going to released.
“We’re thrilled with record sales of 17 million iPads in the June quarter,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “We’ve also just updated the entire MacBook line, will release Mountain Lion tomorrow and will be launching iOS 6 this Fall. We are also really looking forward to the amazing new products we’ve got in the pipeline.”
For more info: refer this

@Unicorn It's fun to see the news from around the globe.

yeah! Moreover, It is 19.99$. Recently, I bought Lion OSX worth $19.99.

@bmike I won't mind to post myself. But only if Daniel has not posted yet. Also, I'd like to post the content of the question here before anywhere else.
@Unicorn It crazy how Wall Street was not that impressed with Apple.

12:36 PM
On the 24th (in the middle of the US) I checked Australia and they are saying it will be the 26 th for release. I'm checking now to see if it's actually out on any stores yet since it's the middle of the day in europe already.
@gentmatt I say have at it.

Ok, I'm going to work on a question.

You could also ask a meta question - how does this look...
It's about making something right for the main site and then you could copy/paste the relevant part to keep to the main site once you were happy.
@gentmatt - You can tag it discussion for the meta needs...
Also - can you buy ML from the store at present? When did it actually go on sale if you know..
OK - nevermind. It appears to be live in the US as well now.

I think that posting a question on Meta will be a bit too late now? So there's not much time to review and discuss now.
Maybe a designated chat room?
@bmike Not in Germany though. I can't search for ML or purchase it.
`Please share new features which you have discovered in OS X Mountain Lion.

Apple [mentions](http://www.apple.com/osx/) that Mountain Lion introduces more than **200+ new features**. This question serves to share and collect the enhancements which may or may not be specifically documented by Apple.

Please add **only one topic per answer**. Check to see if your answer has been posted already to avoid deletion.

Your answer should put the feature into context, explaining how to use it.'

12:52 PM
@gentmatt Does the link above direct you to a country specific site?

It's the US site.

I changed the us to de and it seems to get me to a german looking app that pings open my app store app...
I don't have a german account (or the funds to try to purchase it again ;-)

The link works, put purchases aren't enabled yet. (Error 100)
Here's a second draft of the question. I think this is better:
Please share new features which you have discovered in **[OS X Mountain Lion](http://www.apple.com/osx/)**.

Apple mentions that Mountain Lion introduces more than **200+ new features**. This question serves to share and collect the enhancements which may or may not be specifically documented by Apple.

Your answer should put the feature into context, explaining how to use it. Add a [picture](http://apple.blogoverflow.com/2012/02/taking-screenshots-is-a-snap/) if necessary.

Please add **only one topic per answer**. *Check to see if your answer has been posted already to avoid deletion. No

@gentmatt This looks OK - as worded - it will be a community wiki type question (I think) - I'll ask the others - @JasonSalaz has had good insight into the line between wiki and not in the past.
I might change the last line "Check to see if your answer has been posted already to avoid deletion" -> "Try to find and edit existing features / answers rather than posting a duplicate answer which will end up getting deleted."

So, shall I post the second version with your changes now?

12:59 PM
@gentmatt I must warn you - not everyone likes these sorts of questions.
You'll want to be ready for some down votes, etc....
I think it's a positive for the site overall - and even though I'm of a mind to close a lot of "CW" style questions - a major OS release seems to be pretty safe for asking IMO.

@bmike Yep, I'm aware of that. They become useless when answers are posted very late
I like wikis to collect hints and seeing what is very popular in the community, but I would prefer if there were no badges attached to it.

@gentmatt done - thanks!
Wow - Apple's App store is flinging the 4 GB update in what looks to be an hour download for me.
Pretty constant 1.2 MB/s download with occasional spikes higher.

1:17 PM
I'm still getting the error 100. Like many others: twitter.com/#!/search/mountain%20lion%20100

@gentmatt I'd LOL if that error meant to wait until my download was finished ;-)
I should head to one of my local stores to see if they have a cached server set up to download it locally. That was so cool last time I ran updates on a new mac while in the store.

Mmmh. Now I've managed to purchase, but I'm downloading at 50kb/s.
@bmike Sweet!

May everyone's backup be complete and usable, downloads go fast and surprises be of the good kind this week.

1:50 PM
When did it go up in the store?

Wow! The updates for Aperture, iWork, iTunes, iLife and Safari 6 are loading at 4 MB/s.
Mountain Lion on the other hand....
@DanielLawson Half hour?

Do you see download speed reported directly or are you doing some math?

iStat Pro

@gentmatt I guess this makes me an early adopter this time.
MY download times are really bouncing around.

^^ I'm getting that one :-(

2:08 PM
@KyleBrandt ugh :-(
My machine had a kernel panic last night. I was at two months of uptime.

I was getting a kernel panic about once every day or two until a recent os x update

Wohooo! Now ML is downloading at 4MB/s!

@KyleBrandt I hadn't had a kernel panic since 2006 until then.

@DanielLawson The purchased tab of the app store shows the time remaining. A calculator can confirm that the speeds I see in Activity Monitor for network throughput is due to that one download.

Btw. Apple removed 10.7 Lion. So you might wanna keep a backup of 10.7 if you plan to keep the option of downgrading.

2:12 PM
@gentmatt Good to know!

@gentmatt So you can't buy that anymore from the online store?
I'm not surprised. I'd bet they keep the USB drive around for people that Need 10.7 Lion

@bmike The reference in purchases has been removed.
Also, searching for OS X Lion yields no results.

I don't like this new cloud world. The permanence of physical media is comforting… and Orwell-insurance.
@gentmatt But Lion has to somehow still be downloadable, because that's what the Internet Recovery option would do for someone who hasn't purchased ML…

@DanielLawson I'll test this later - it's not likely that it's gone if you bought it - perhaps hidden or not shown by default - but that seems too hasty to be anything but a temporary bug or misunderstanding IMO.

@DanielLawson I guess so. To me the option to create a custom USB with the .dmg image is very important, so I need to be able to download it via the App Store.

2:27 PM
@gentmatt Indeed. But I was able to create one from the restore partition.

@bmike It would be kind if Apple would keep the 10.7 download available. After all we purchased the licenses and got no install DVDs.
@DanielLawson You mean that the restore partition keeps the .dmg?
You'd set this up just like the external flash drive, right?

@gentmatt I don't remember how I did it. But I have a machine that shipped with Lion and somehow I made a USB installer.

Ok, cya later...

enjoy!

2:41 PM
@gentmatt I'm betting there will be an easy way to get it downloaded again.

Q: Bug in Safari 6 when saving an edited answer

I expect this will affect Mountain Lion users as well.

How does one use Safari 6 with Lion?

3:07 PM
Software Update
Also - if you all want to vote to re-open that question on Meta, I'd appreciate it. The other error on safari 5.1 was not repro and this is gonna be irksome if the main devs don't look at a fix. Hopefully then run updates today or install Mountain Lion and deploy a fix to the site editor code sooner rather than later.

3:34 PM
@bmike I assume that's a general appeal to vote to reopen it; I have 101 rep on mso.

@DanielLawson Yes - the old question from June 5 was something that the devs could not reproduce
No one here was complaining about errors submitting edits and we all used safari 5.1 so I'm just not liking that an old question is being kept to track an emerging issue

3:51 PM
Halleluja! No more obnoxious animations in iCal.

@gentmatt iCal? What I love about Fantastical is I never have to open iCal or the Google Cal pages. :)

4:10 PM
Whoa! Spotlight doesn't get the corner anymore!
Indicator lights are hideous when the Dock is on the bottom of the screen.

4:28 PM
@IanC. I sync all my private information except for emails locally. Luckily it's simple with Apple. But I don't trust the cloud :) Yeah, call me paranoid!
@DanielLawson Yeah, that's strange. Just because there's a new icon in the menubar doesn't mean that there needs to be this weird gap now.

Q: Spotlight in upper right screen corner in Mountain Lion

Daniel LawsonIn the System Preferences panel for Spotlight in OS X 10.8, it claims "Spotlight is located at the top right corner of the screen". On my system, this does not appear to be true; the Notification Center menubar icon has claimed that particular piece of prime real estate. Has anyone discovered a ...

hehe i was just dropping in to announce that!
the promo page is here:

Cool! Thanks, @Lauren

@DanielLawson definitely! excited to see what comes of it
hope everyone enjoys

So what's the general consensus? Upgrade? Or not?

Well, upgrade if you want to be able to answer ML questions on this site :-)
I'm massive irked by spotlight losing the top right corner.
I had no idea how often I counted on that.

5:17 PM
@DanielLawson I realized the complete opposite. Apparently I never actually touch it with the mouse. Command-space FTW, I guess!

@DanielLawson Yeah, did it disappear?
@NathanGreenstein I don't even use Spotlight. I killed it on Mom's MBP.

It got bumped to the left. Notification Center got the top right pixel. Which stinks because it has its own gesture.

Here's the question: Is it stable enough for a regular person, not a geek, to use? Are there problems, bugs, etc?

I have the drawer set to ctrl+alt+options+space
easy enough for me to just drop 4 fingers to open it

@daviesgeek It's stable except for Messages.

5:19 PM
I want in-drawer keyboard shortcuts though :(

What I'm trying to determine is: Can Mom use this without noticing that it isn't Lion (barring obvious design changes)
@NathanGreenstein I hated the Messages beta. I haven't used it in forever.

I wish Messages would be backported to Lion. My parents' iMac (my old one) probably can't run ML. (I think it's mid-2007)

@daviesgeek I'd say so. I've been using it for a long time (betas) and it's been remarkably stable.

@NathanGreenstein Really.

And let the swath of updates (non-ML proper) commence!
it's all first party... lame

5:21 PM
@DanielLawson I went for a long time without Lion questions...

@daviesgeek Yep, it's been an eerily stable beta.

mom's pushing me to get off.

Maybe has to do with them releasing it to journalists w/o NDA?

So I will TTYL!

@daviesgeek Okay, talk to you later

5:21 PM
Thanks!
(might consider upgrading a little more...)

@Lauren What a cute cat!
Did the contest already start? Or will it start tomorrow?

@gentmatt I believe it's already started.

@NathanGreenstein I read that it's starts at Jul 25 12:00 AM UTC. I assume that's in the past according to worldtimeserver.com/current_time_in_UTC.aspx.

Yep, looks like it

It started before Mountain Lion came out :P.

5:37 PM
Darn it @gentmatt you beat me to the ML CW!

This is the craziest thing I've ever seen... forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1326466

@gentmatt And your CW just qualified for Nice Question: Ask a question tagged Mountain Lion that ends the contest with a score of 10 or more.

Ugh. I thought we were trying to get away from these types of questions.

prediction: that's going to turn in to maintenance headache.

@Dynamic Haha this is nuts!

@IanC. We're trying to keep them to a very limited number. One per new OS release doesn't seem unmanageable. And if it becomes that, we can make it go away.

5:49 PM
@IanC. Yeah, luckily I get notified each time. So I keep doing some maintenance.

@gentmatt Gizmodo thinks the same thing :P

@Dynamic that's subtle for sure.

@IanC. as much as the lion, terminal, ios 5 tips/tricks questions are?

@Dynamic I don't believe this rumor. Instead I would imagine that the designers follow specific aspect ratios which are known for "looking good". You know, like the golden ratio.

5:52 PM
those questions work incredibly well as long as they have at least one champion

It looks like a perfect triangle. eye <-> eye <-> mouth

@gentmatt Most likely...
:P

the wording on this new one is, I believe, going to cause some mainteance headaches. Those other ones have "one thing" in the title. You have to read the whole question to get the "one thing per post" in the new one.

Plus I just dislike these big long answer threads. Hard to find anything useful in them after they start to span multiple pages.
100 bonus rep if you can sort out why Time Machine is always running, but backups aren't that big, for me.

Q: Why is Time Machine over-stating the amount of data that needs to be backed up?

Ian C.I shuffled my home directory around and moved it back to my spinning platter drive in my MacBook. ProTip: you can summon the installer log with Command-L and switch to showing all logs with Command-3 if you want to watch what Mountain Lion is doing while it installs itself on your Mac.

I'm going to start doing that on all installers.

6:04 PM
@DanielLawson I did a little poking around and I can't find a good way to get rid of the NC menu bar icon short of disabling it entirely :( Even if I swap out the images for 1px-wide ones it still takes up the same amount of space.
I did get it to show a Dock icon, but that's not exactly helpful :)

People have tried, in-vain as far as I'm aware, to get rid of spotlight.
I personally think they're crazy, but am sympathetic considering how easily/quickly I can completely pad up my menu bar.
When not attached to a thunderbolt display, it gets painful quickly.
The overlap between app menus and menu extras is sort of laughable that it's still a problem.
(See: Xcode, small resolutions, and LOTS of menu extras!)

You can get rid of the Spotlight icon by chmod'ing the executable, which works fine because the indexing and Finder search is done by separate processes.
NC doesn't work because the same process is in charge of the drawer UI

rly?
neat

why on earth would you get rid of spotlight though?
Maybe I'm biased because it breaks Alfred, and Spotlight really isn't half bad...
note: I'm VERY BIASED

6:08 PM
I did it on a 13" screen because I wanted the space. I left indexing on so Alfred worked but got rid of the icon.
Which was fine because I always used the Alfred UI instead of the Spotlight UI

6:26 PM

I might put LaunchPad back in my dock at least to see the App Store download / install progress.
Dear @daviesgeek, pay attention to The Verge
Wrap-up
Ultimately, this is pretty easy: you should spend the $20 and upgrade to Mountain Lion, especially if you have a newer Mac. You’ll gain a handful of must-have features, and everything will get faster and smoother. I haven’t really missed Snow Leopard at all since upgrading, which is remarkable considering how much I disliked Lion.

THIS IS PRETTY EASY: YOU SHOULD SPEND THE $20
But there’s something else going on here beyond a simple purchasing decision: we’re witnessing a dramatic change in how desktop operating systems are fundamentally conceived. Mountain Lion is the first version
unless there is some explicit reason you don't wish to update.

6:57 PM
Anyone else getting an annoying dialog in Safari 6 when inline editing a post on the site?

@NathanGreenstein Thanks

@JasonSalaz Sounds good. Off to convince Dad of the purchase!
@bmike Very nice!

@DanielBeck PITA - I'm tempted to bounty that sucker and your plea for a full screen friendly site on the main meta... :-)

@DanielBeck Yes!
So PowerNap is a no go until firmware updates roll out?

7:01 PM
@JasonSalaz It's a reflex from working support for years. I don't even think about it - as soon as I see an installer and more than three minutes wait - I pop off those two shortcuts in quick succession.

@gentmatt Is your CW supposed to be a "tiny things" post?

@daviesgeek It encompasses similar territory.

Yep. But I did not use those words in the title as I find "features" more specific.

I was just wondering, as it doesn't have the same wording. though I thought that's what it was.
@gentmatt Okay.
My personal preference is "tiny things", but whatever...
It works

@Lauren I want to thank Lauren and the crew for taking their company time and money to promote the site.

7:05 PM
@daviesgeek Every iteration need not use the same name.

Do you want to name names on the people that are working to put this together or should we just pour all the adulation your way?

@JasonSalaz I know. I just prefer the "tiny things"

you said that already

@JasonSalaz I did. I did.
Must leave for lunch!

@gentmatt Stick to your guns on the question - I don't think Mountain Lion is about small details in a similar manner that Lion was.

Q: Airport Utility in Mountain Lion

stuffeSo I just upgraded to Mountain Lion, and I'm watching some Netflix over my Apple TV, when it stops streaming and tells me it's not connected to the network any more. Sure enough, my Air has also lost it's network connectivity and the Airport Extreme is solid Amber on the status light. I wait a ...

genuine non promotional problem!

That reminds me, I wonder when the AppleTV update is expected. And what it will bring.

Is it just me, or has "show package contents" gone?

it's just you
Works on Photo Library

OK, it works on the files in my Kindle and Calibre DMGs, but for the 5.6 Airport Utility.pkg it doesn't let me try it

odd

Just Open and Open With with options of Installer and Mac App Store

Did it used to do that for .pkg files?

If they end in .pkg, then I would expect it
if anyone else wants to try the download and see if they can do it, I linked above

I've peered into .pkg's often.

the ones that worked were not suffixed .pkg
I tried renaming, but no beans.

you're right, it doesn't work
need to find another .pkg to test...

It works, because the iWork and iLife installers are all pkg's, and you get show package contents to get to individual installers avoiding the installer scripts (which is what I am attempting here)

uggggh
the freaking "things magically get pinned to your sidebar" bug is back :(
(in finder)
that's weird
the Microsoft RDC pkg (inside the DMG) allows show package contents
must be a different sort of package.

curious. And IRRITATING! :)
it just did it again.
I lost all access to the 5ghz network, this time the lights didn't change and everything stayed connected
everything on the 2.4Ghz network I mean

so, 'show package contents' works because it's not a package, but a folder
it's just turned into an executable file by the mach kernel for convenience.
