@KyleCronin It appeared to do sub pixel rendering when I zoomed the text - but I didn't fixate on that for long when I could try to bog down the CPU and try to get a feel for the SSD speed.

I suppose with a super-sharp screen, the need for non-antialiased text is diminished, but I like the look of non-antialiased Monaco much better than antialiased Monaco

@KyleCronin Absolutely. Hand crafted, fits on the pixel boundary fonts can be a thing of beauty.
Windows has leaned far towards that ideal than Mac for a long time, and when I'm doing print layout, I appreciate the mac way. But in code, the windows side has great merit.

12:21 AM
yes, but that's about the only thing about coding on Windows that's better :-P

@KyleCronin there's not much I prefer. If it didn't come with such large security holes, I'd appreciate their screen sharing more - terminal services remote screen just screams compared to VNC screen sharing
under most circumstances (LAN) working on a beefy server is (was) faster than working locally in many cases. But that's it in areas where I've found win to be better

Screen Sharing is terrrrrrrible.

I don't know, OS X screen sharing is pretty good

@JasonSalaz Which OS?

I've actually done work by remotely screen sharing to my Mac at work from my apartment

12:25 AM
Screen Sharing is terrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrible
I think I've been using it since Leopard
slow, janky, and totally frustrating

@KyleCronin Fire up time machine and watch the stars kiss your responsive experience buh bye

any/every animation pretty much

@bmike do you mean time machine over the network? because I do have my Drobo doing TM all the time

he means fire up the Time Machine browse/restore view over Screen Sharing.

ah, didn't quite make that connection
hm, actually, I don't have TM set up on the work machine

12:29 AM
I don't know why they don't code in a flat background screen when screen sharing is active. That's so hard on remote support with slower link speeds. Even when you use Remote Desktop to throttle down the colors
@KyleCronin FiOS has ruined you anyhow.

yeah, I have a symmetric 25Mbit connection with a 15ms latency between here and my machine at work
so it's pretty much like it's on my local network
I like to have it full screened at the same res as my monitor
that way I can easily flip back and forth

1:02 AM
@bmike Lucky!!!!!

Friggin' screen sharing. Gotta give MS credit for one thing, RDP is top notch.

2:01 AM
Hello

@Moshe Hello. How's WWDC going?
Or can you answer that? NDA and all...

It's going well.
@DanielLawson Stump the experts. Can't say much else.

@DanielLawson "What was the score of the last Kings game" Insert Stanley Cup victory information here
so, I guess that settles that.

@bmike If you get it, that would be great!

@JasonSalaz File a radar.

Moshe, you obviously replied before reading the whole channel :P.

Q: Is the retina Macbook Pro's SSD soldered into the logic board?

gentmattThe Macbook Air's SSD can be manually upgraded. The RAM of the Macbook Air and retina MBP however are soldered into the logic board. Question Is the retina Macbook Pro's SSD soldered into the logic board as well?

I have updated the "definition" of retina display using a video from yesterday's keynote:
16
A: What exactly is a retina display?

gentmattRetina displays To user Philip Schiller's own words from the WWDC2012: ...which means: The pixels of this display are so small that from a normal working distance your retina cannot discern those individual pixels. (watch at youtube) There is no industry standard for "retina display". ...

New iPad smart covers. This time, even I agree that the price is right :)

11:04 AM
Almost identical to the £10 one from eBay that I bought...
Except these have a hideously large bezel....

The new covers are quite nice.

Stump was fun. Got a shirt.

Stump?

2:59 PM
@stuffe You keep finding amazing deals.
But a ten pound case sounds like quite a lot to lug around.
:-/

Badum, tish!

@stuffe :-)

Stump the Experts.

I have to say, I thought it would be temporary and fall to bits as I was searching for a decent one, but it's been really great - I haven't removed the smart cover one single time since I first put it on - true
(not true, I did do it once, because something got trapped between the case and mines translucent so I could see it)

3:16 PM
@Moshe Did you manage to stump them?

4:18 PM
@stuffe no, no time.
They didn't get to my question.

4:43 PM
"This is, to date, the least repairable laptop we've taken apart."
"On top of being glued together, the new MacBook Pro is virtually non-upgradeable—making it the first MacBook Pro that will be unable to adapt to future advances in memory and storage technology."
"I guess Apple has successfully made Applecare a mandatory part of the computer purchase, now."

@bmike (in reference to your answer. If a third party manufacturer decided to make a bigger SSD, you theoretically could put it in the new MBP?
But it won't fit a spinning platter, right?

5:06 PM
@stuffe Wow. These are really confusing on the eye!
This is my favorite one:

5:24 PM
@daviesgeek There are spinning platters that will fit there physically, but I doubt you'd want it. It's not clear yet where the controller lies or how amenable to aftermarket parts this may be.
@gentmatt Talk about a water car - dive, dive! aaaahhh ooooooooooooh aaaaahhhh

Q: Should we keep ' - Stack Exchange' at the end of our name?

Nathan GreensteinOur official name has recently been upgraded to Ask Different (instead of Apple). This is something we've been hoping for for a long time, and I'm thrilled that it's happened. The change seems to have propagated throughout the site and network now: we're Ask Different in the site's title, the SE...

5:52 PM
Hmm - those don't strike me as troublesome or unreasonable. I'll think it over though...

6:05 PM
my reaction also (see comment on Nathan's post)

Hi @jonathan - with regards to twitter.com/unimp0rtanttech/status/212533278920540161 and

@bmike You have to get the literal numeric ID number and plug it into that field.
Because SE likes making it's ♦s work.

The tweet about soldering is incorrect. The individual SSD packages are clearly surface mounted or equivalent onto a circuit board that is distinct from the logic board. The "drive" is something that can be replaced by a technician without needing to swap out the entire logic board (GPU/CPU/ports, etc...)
