@bmike CW?

@bmike Correct me if I'm wrong, but Pingdom doesn't monitor your Internet connection

A: How do people manage keeping historical versions of iOS apps on their Mac?

stuffeIndeed, iTunes will simply throw in the Trash any item that is replaced by a subsequent update, which is a handy getout clause if you notice that you need the old version back quickly, before you empty it, but isn't exactly a robust solution with long term options. Using Time Machine is a simple...

Not sure if it's because it was a CW question, or if it's because I edited it too much, but it's a CW answer also

@stuffe im scratching my head on the CW myself ill check with the other mods - perhaps i accidentally enabled it...
@daviesgeek you're wrong - checking whether your mac is online/connected is the exact and sole purpose of pingdom

3 hours later…
5:14 PM
@bmike Ok, I thought it was for site monitoring, checking to make sure that your site is up, and didn't run locally. Mea culpa

7:08 PM
@daviesgeek It doesn't run locally - that's the beauty of the suggestion. It tests that your router is connected to the internet - not that it simply has a connection to some router and a non-routable IP address.

im a newbie to linux and im deeply dissappointed

@joseph ? How so

@stuffe i've installed 12.04 which is my starting linux and i've been facing lots of problems
@stuffe its not about the problems that frustrate me.its about the less availability of solutions on the "INTERNET"
i mean i've migrated from windows and i've been able to google my way out of problems but linux is complicated.it scares away newbies like me
i've always believed linux to be somewhat less frustrating and powerful than windows
but its more irritating than windows .im sure linux wont penetrate masses this way

It has it's place, and it's unforgiving to the newcomer

yes it sure is.i mean doesnt anyone come out with a tender way to help newbies with linux
i mean the linux people out there are geniuses right.couldn't they figure out a way to make linux as easy to use as windows.
i think its with the free thingy
people wont do things if its free

7:21 PM
@joseph i'm not a genius. Not by a long shot.

F that ever happened, it wouldnt be Linux. It like asking for a Formula one cat to be easy to drive
Power, ease of use, feature, pick 2
You can't have it all, sadly

@jrg hmmm but linux users are geeks right.im a non linux geek too
@stuffe but you can't get formula one cars on the road for everyone right, hehe yup the pick 2 triangle is true

jrg
I'm not a geek, or at least I didn't start off as one. I started down that "path" when I decided I wanted to learn how to program, which was after I had installed Ubuntu. (BTW, unless anyone has objections, I'm moving all this over to the Ubuntu chatroom so it doesn't clog you guys)

Its quiet enough here for me not to mind
I presume Joseph knows he's in the Apple chat room :)

@jrg i've just finished my computer science graduation without even touching linux
@stuffe OMG is that true..damn it took time figuring out "ask different"
sorry people

jrg
7:33 PM
@joseph There is a difference between computer science and computer engineering. Engineering is when you get into Linux, not science.
Mainly because Linux is an art, not a science. (and I'm almost done with that answer for you)

@jrg actually in india its CSE,computer science and engineering .so it's kinda like both but i still havent figured out the difference

Hi @stuffe, any contest running right now or soon?

No problem ;) We are friendly enough, we even have our own resident Ubuntu guy anyway, so we can't be that bad

Is it every year or something?

None that I know of, might be a while before we get another one, at least another one with prizes

7:35 PM
How long is a while?

There is no set schedule, they are one-offs at present
I would guess none before the next iphone is out at the earliest, but I am just an everyday user like you, and don't have any special knowledge

jrg
@joseph Difference (at least here in the US as I understand it) is CS is theory, like how bits are stored, vs CE is like "How do I get this server rack to be cooled properly, as well as not blow a fuse"

@stuffe Thanks.

Hey - did I miss the linux chat?

7:59 PM
@bmike Oh. I completely misunderstood Pingdom then...

jrg
@bmike Heh, looks like you did

8:53 PM
@bmike rode 'em straight outta town!
