@PatrickCook Are you serious about that bluetooth module (HC-05) having a 500m range? My understanding of bluetooth is that's way beyond what bluetooth was intended for, and I couldn't find any similar claims online although you said the manufacturer promoted it that way. Anyway, I'm not raising the issue to argue, just that if it really does work you might want to leave a comment about that with more specific details of the brand/model here:

Q: Pi hotspot range / possible?

Josh MThis is a strange one... I want to have two Pi's: one as a hotspot with a WiPi, and the other to connect to it. I have absolutely no idea how to go about this :( . Here is how I want it set up: **Pi 1 (Hotspot): ** This Pi will be a sort of host for the other to connect to, a bit like a PC and ...

Since the OP is looking for for a paired relay of pis sans actual internet -- although the end point one is supposed to serve as a hotspot, the nature of the connection to the other pi isn't clear.
Actually it's not clear that the "hotspot" is for anything other than the other pi...

@Ghanima Did you get this bit above about brave @sir_ian being in The Holy Grail?

11:07 PM
@goldilocks I've just realized my typo, it's supposed to be 500ft. Which is still more than the longest range bluetooth I've heard of. That's just what it said on the packaging of the module, which was mostly in Chinese. And we all know that Chinese manufacturers aren't known for being completely accurate or truthful. That's why I included that what I usually experience is 100ft (at least that's what it would've said without the typo.)

today's free ebook (registration required) is Getting Started with Electronic Projects

@SteveRobillard I actually bought a packt membership at the beginning of the year -- did you get your commision? ;)

Can you not edit comments anymore? I'm trying to fix my typo and I see no edit option.

@goldilocks I have a packt sub as well and have free download credits nut still pickup the free book every day
@PatrickCook where link please

@goldilocks The HC-06's theoretical range is 500 meters. (Or at least that's what my packaging said) I can assually get about 100 meters away before it starts to become unreliable. — Patrick Cook Jun 23 at 17:05

11:10 PM
missed my kickback I mean commision

I still have half my free membership tokens too, plus an extra per month for having spent X hours reading online -- I think they screwed that up at some point because I was surprised to realize a few months ago "left the page open on my tablet" seems to count as reading time. Shhh.

I do the same and read a few hundred sections a month on the pi next to my bed

Their damn search sucks though. It is like an anti-search engine. "Looking for something? Try rolling dice..."

with free credits every month I wonder how they are making a profit I paid something like $70 for the subscription and they give me a free book every month

We'd have to ask Poitr (?) how much they actually pay the authors..

11:13 PM
@goldilocks agreed on the search - also wish the lib allowed taking and downloading notes
if nothing else it saves me from buying a dud of a book

As long as they can stay afloat it is a great model

between online subs books i buy and the local library i avg a book a day

I admit to a lot of skimming, and some new hard covers that stare at me guilty from a shelf...

agreed I can recommend safari books online as well though its price has gone up considerably - I am grandfathered in @ $10 a month for 5 slot bookshelf
I have a pile that is probably 6 -7 ft tall I call it my in case the power goes out
and the pi/kindle etc. don't work
we had a week with no power twice in the past couple of years

I've heard a power outage in New England can last for generations...

11:18 PM
I would agree but it happened in quebec (solar flare) we were without power for a week as erll and they make excess power in hudson bay
thank god for the fireplace we would have froze without it

Here a few times a year it is out for like 20 minutes and people are in the street outside staring up at the sky for some reason.

waiting for the asteroid to strike or the shhip to beam them up
btw did you know you could leave out the -get and it still works and gives a progress indicator while installing

@SteveRobillard Yeah that's the new apt. My still incomplete premier blog post ("How to find the software I want") touches on that.
The unfortunate side of it is you now have to use -C/A/B qualifiers with grep, unless you didn't care what the package is actually called, since that is on a separate line.

would you prefer I not include it in a quick links post for Friday

@goldilocks: maybe you should just finish it up for tomorrow's article.
You'll feel so much better with it done.
:P

11:26 PM
@SteveRobillard No go ahead, the more mentions the better. It is not as if I spent my whole sabbatical on that ;) It is not the meat of the plot either.

I only intend to write a couple of sentences and include a couple of examples maybe a screenshot
do either of you have a preferred git tutrial

I prefer pro-git, personally.

@Jacobm001 Yes but my most recent once over realized I have to check some things vis. using Debian armhf vs. armel packages on various models within Raspbian. That's like two days including distractions ;)

@Jacobm001 the book? if so I already have that included

@goldilocks /eyeroll
@SteveRobillard yeah.

11:28 PM
but their are online tutorials that walk you through git basics step by step

@goldilocks What about me in the holy grail?

like this btw did you know you could leave out the -get and it still works and gives a progress indicator while installing I have a few more but need to find them in my bookmarks

@sir_ian Are you a Monty Python fan by any chance? Either way Ghanima will get it I think.

@Jacobm001 I plan to send you a proposed outline for the security series we discussed
@goldilocks de we know he isn't an OBE

OBE?

11:31 PM
No i have not seen the holy grail or flying circus or anything they have done

order of the british empire I believe one of the heraldic orders that the queen knights you into

@sir_ian My understanding of the S.E. unicorn was that it was supposed to be delivered to Jon Skeet but never made it, so this may make your brother some kind of fugitive.

I heard he got it late because they would not let it leave canada

Yes we have all the unicorns now they have been hunted into extinction south of the border, like their coveted "Golden Eagle".

He is a mod on ask ubuntu which is why he had it

11:35 PM
@sir_ian if not a monty python fan are you a real knight?

no

You can't be a real knight and not a Monty Python fan. Or maybe it is the other way around.
3
@Jacobm001 Order of the British Empire I think. You may be able to pick one up on the cheap right now.

everytime I see people talking about unicorns it reminds me of this squattypotty.com/unicorn-c watch the video

11:52 PM
@SteveRobillard After living for prolonged periods in places where it was a requirement I have to agree wholeheartedly about the value of squatting vs. sitting. Whole-some-bodily-organly anyway.

I don't disagree with the product value just the ice cream crapping unicorn mascot
