@Ullallulloo generally, it's used to describe two people who are not in a romantic relationship who might otherwise be mistaken for being in one.

i.e. "I'm going out with my ex. Strictly platonic though."

@Ullallulloo Yes, essentially, it's two people who wouldn't describe themselves as dating, but other people might be fooled into thinking they were.

Technically, you can describe your relationship with ANYONE as platonic, though. For instance, I'm heterosexual, but if I have a friend who is another man, I could describe our relationship as platonic. It would sound funny, like I was implying that he was a homosexual. But, it works.

@DavidM Yeah. That's the key; doing that actively implies that you're potentially romantically interested in men, but not this one who is your friend.

The term is only ever used to disambiguate that a relationship is not romantic. Not to emphasize it in some way.
