MeatStare @RedRiderX
Ah, good riddance.
Title is a little misleading.

I'm not doing any voting on that meta question. But I've hashed out my stance on this here in the Bridge. If you want to imply that enforcing policy as it has been for the last year and change is the wrong way to do it, I'm going to take exception to that. There are better ways to go about it without strawmanning our position.

@fbueckert Meta is designed for voting.

@RedRiderX damn you! now I'm watching it too!

@alexanderpas Oh did you just start?
Objective achieved!

Who wants a free copy of Saints Row 4?

12:13 AM
@GnomeSlice I'd be interested if I didn't have to sit through this dude talking about it.

@LessPop_MoreFizz He's pretty funny, but yeah, this one is eh
He's a comedian or something, he does these skits.
Mostly about a fat guy playing video games.

All the same, @RedRiderX, I will destroy you in some fashion.

Anyone have any experience with USB wifi?

@Fluttershy Just enough to know to run screaming

@LessPop_MoreFizz Dang... I have a Rosewill wireless card, and it's not interacting well with my Linksys router, but I can't find Linksys wireless cards. =( All I can find of theirs is USB stuff.

12:50 AM
@fbueckert What strawman? The offending information was removed. The question was once again voted closed.
Remove the off-topic cruft, leave the question for legitimate future users. This is how I've been enforcing policy for the last year and change.

@RavenDreamer That is how you, personally, have been enforcing the policy.
My understanding the entire time has been, "Piracy = off-topic". Full stop.
And until this question, I haven't seen a single question that mentions piracy be re-opened.

@fbueckert Yes. Our understandings differ.
@fbueckert Because the ones that originally do get that removed.

If piracy isn't integral to the question, remove it and leave it open.

@RavenDreamer Not that I've seen. If it mentioned piracy at all, it was closed and deleted.
No saving graces whatsoever.

@fbueckert This is how I've been viewing it too.

12:53 AM
ARE there other questions that mentioned piracy, were edited to remove it, and were re-opened?

@fbueckert I certainly hope so
Because if not that's not right.

Because this seems to be a departure from our normal actions.

@fbueckert None I can present without going through hundreds of links or more.

@RavenDreamer Well, you're sorta proving my point, then.

If piracy is irrelevant to the question, I don't see why it should be closed.
Feel free to educate me I guess.

12:54 AM
There's no established precedent for what you're doing here. Which is why we have the meta now.
And I don't care which way we go, so long as we have a clear, concise, consistent policy to follow.

@fbueckert I reopened a question once, after editing it. That is all I've done. It was closed again. Now it's open again.

Otherwise, we're just going to repeat this every single time we run into this.
@RavenDreamer And I still don't think you should have done that.

3 mins ago, by GnomeSlice
If piracy isn't integral to the question, remove it and leave it open.

It's probably a bad sign when Windows does'nt even bother giving me a duration estimate for a file copy task

The damage has been done, though, so there's no point in bitching about it.
@RavenDreamer Yes. Gnome's opinion means squat to me.
If you want to quote him, you're not going to help yourself with me.

12:57 AM
I've always understood the policy to mean the supporting people with pirated game is off-topic, because that's exactly what the FAQ says.

@fbueckert It's also the opinion of myself and Agent86, and who knows who else. Though disregarding it because of the source is ironic to me.

If you want to change it, that's fine, but don't say that people have been using their votes wrong for enforcing the policy.
I do agree that the current policiy seems silly when sterno can literally reask the same question without including piracy, but that doesn't mean we were voting wrong, just tha the rule was wrong.

@fbueckert I really hope that flag got approved, what a terrible thing to say about someone.

@GnomeSlice Having an opinion about an opinion is allowed, alas for you.

@RavenDreamer And if that's the policy we decide on, I'll be happy to enforce it that way.

12:59 AM
@RavenDreamer That's true, but it's still rude.

My whole point is that we, as a community, are not consistent on this point, and we need to be.

Hence th' flag.
I guess nobody else thought so though.

If we can have a debate this bitter over a single question every single time it comes up, we need a clear policy to follow.

@fbueckert I'm not bitter.

And we do nobody any favors by enforcing it piecemeal over varying interpretations of it.
Either it's whole hog piracy gets burninated, or we establish set rules and processes to follow.
@Wipqozn That was my entire beef with his comment. By implication, it was invalidating how people voted, which is wrong.

1:02 AM
@fbueckert You do that all the time.
When you say stuff like 'pity upvotes'.

> Raven Dreamer: When you say stuff like 'pity upvotes'.
That's odd, the chat preview thought raven said that.

@Wipqozn Chat preview?

@GnomeSlice when you're in another room and it shows you the latest message from another chat.

@Wipqozn Huh, that is weird.

@fbueckert If people are casting votes against a specific user because of the user, rather than their questions or answers... then yes, people are misusing their votes. S'why we have tools to catch serial up/down votes.

in Chat feedback on Meta Stack Overflow Chat, Dec 5 '12 at 18:27, by Tim Stone
I guess this isn't necessarily unexpected behaviour, but I'm not sure...apparently if a moderator edits another user's post to reply to my post, it tells me that the moderator is replying to me.
(same deal)

@RavenDreamer They're not casting it against the user. They're casting it in enforcement of their understanding of our policies.

@RavenDreamer Except people aren't voting based on the user, they are voting based on the fact they are asking for support for pirated games.

Oh, I didn't even realize he'd edited it.
Sorry.

It only took 3 edits for my message to make sense. That's good, right? Right?

That's the part that I said you were strawmanning. You're making the assumption that we're casting a vote because the user is pirating, therefore it's against the user.

1:06 AM
@Wipqozn Eh, it's better than some of mine.

When the understanding up until now has been, "Question is about piracy. Close."

@fbueckert To be fair, it's not "question is about piracy" but "question involves a pirated game".

@Wipqozn Same thing. :P

@fbueckert Not really, but whatever man, whatever. Love and peace.

@fbueckert That is the first thing you've written that makes me understand where you're coming from.

1:08 AM
All I'm looking for here is a consistent policy for us to enforce. Not one handed down by mod because that's what you say it is. But what the community says it is.

sounds like it's time for a ~meta topic~

Which is why your comment sounded so heavy handed.

@Mana Th...ther is one.

@Mana There is one

That's what we're talking about.

1:09 AM
oh.

We're talking about ravens comment on the meta.

Q: When does a question "support piracy and pirated games"?

Sterno There's been a lot of talk recently about what it means to support piracy and pirated games. A very recent example is this question, in which a user asks a question that turns out to be a valid problem for a legitimate copy of the game, but in which he admitted in the comments that he's using a...

woo...woo hoo!
hey look at that meta topic isn't it cool.
2
where did that even come from I don't know hahahahaha
shoots self

@fbueckert Based on his previous comment, I don't think that's what happened here. I think he just had a different understanding of the rule, and how people were voting.

@Wipqozn Yeah, crossed wires, and all that.

1:11 AM
So he was just making a statement based on how he understood the rule, and not "I am RAven. Lord Shark. Hear me Shark. Shark Shark shark. I'm a shark."

@fbueckert I've altered my comment to better reflect my viewpoint.

Welcome to the internet, where debating has to be done using text, without visual cues!

user20683
pantomines wildly in front of his computer

@RavenDreamer The implication is still there, just less so.

@Wipqozn Awww, I'd totally pin the second half of that sentence.

1:12 AM
"I am Raven. Lord Shark. Hear me Shark. Shark Shark Shark. I'm a shark."
6

@fbueckert Except now the implication is, the enforcement needs to change, not the user.

@RavenDreamer And I'm alright with however we decide to proceed with this. I just want it to be something clear, with no room for grey areas.

@RavenDreamer You should include that on resumes.

Because that's the last thing we need in a topic this sensitive.

I suppose all that's left is for Grace Note to make his eventual response, attract ALL the upvotes, and for the Bridge to find a new topic to quibble over.

@RavenDreamer sagely "For that is the way of things".

@Weston.h You changed your name!

@RavenDreamer Yeah, I'm waiting for her to come along to tell us why we are all wrong and make us feel silly.

@RavenDreamer No, he's a different user.

@RavenDreamer Grace has a way of peacemaking. I dunno how it works, because that doesn't come naturally to me at all.

1:15 AM
@GnomeSlice "Formerly World Engineer".

user20683
@fbueckert It's the gender ambiguity. It confuses people into compliance.

@RavenDreamer sshhh

@fbueckert It's his gravatars. No one can resist cute anime girls.

user20683
Different Name, Same Level of Disdain for Shenanigans.

@RavenDreamer It's true. Cute anime girls are fantastic.

1:16 AM
@RavenDreamer So long as we're both open to whatever the community decides, water under the bridge. Contrary to popular opinion, I CAN be reasonable every now and then. :P

@fbueckert Well, that's just crazy.

user20683
@fbueckert You are generally reasonable

user20683
I'm also generally insane.

user20683
so there

@Weston.h He is, he just has very strong opinions and he portrays them in such a way that people mistake him for being unreasonable.

user20683
1:18 AM
@Wipqozn So he's like LessPop and I

user20683
I can dig that

That is to say he's really blunt and loves his italtics, and who can blame him? Italics are great!

@Wipqozn In other words, I'm blunt and opinionated and not quiet about it.

user20683
Like LessPop and I

user20683
:P

1:18 AM
Anyways, Tales just got super awesome, so I'm a gonna go play that for a bit.

user20683
I'm gonna go try and continue with my job hunt

@fbueckert Which one?

@RavenDreamer Tales of Xillia.
I just hit the "twist" that comes like halfway through.
Same as in Graces.

I'll probably pick that up the next time I'm in the mood for a JRPG. Which might not be for awhile.

@Wipqozn Do you actually own a PS3?

1:21 AM
Is a JRPG just a regular RPG from Japan?

user20683
@GnomeSlice not quite

user20683
it's a style of RPG

user20683
more than just an origin

Has anyone here played Dragon's Crown?

user20683
it implies a Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy like game

user20683
1:22 AM
very linear, story driven with massive stakes and craziness

Xilia is the one that just came out?

user20683
usually a teen protagonist

All I know about it is there's some really tall female protagonist. (who's Maxwell or something?)

@fbueckert Yes.

@GnomeSlice Ergo, final fantasy style.

1:23 AM
@RavenDreamer Yes.

user20683
loads of random encounters typically, very grinding oriented

@RavenDreamer That doesn't help me.

@Sterno That's the game with the highly exaggerated characters, right?

@Weston.h Oh. So like Skies of Arcadia?

And, according to the other main character, amazing curves and really busty.

user20683
1:23 AM
@GnomeSlice aye

But, she's 20, so it's alright!

i really like feel like playing a game with a final fantasy tactics style job system.

@Wipqozn Honestly I'm not sure. I just heard it was a good "fighting RPG" in the vein of Golden Axe

user20683

user20683
:)

1:24 AM
@Sterno I've heard some mixed things. Some saying the golden axe comparison, others saying it's really shallow. I really haven't looked into it much.

Golden Axe was pretty shallow, so if it's pretty much a clone with prettier graphics and more combat moves, pass
I'll have to dig up some reviews

Yeah, that's what I understood.

@fbueckert ...not sure that's something that usually required verification in non-text games. :D

I watched a video of it at on poit, but it didn't really grab my attention.

@RavenDreamer Hey, I'm just repeating. It's mentioned ingame often enough.
One of the end battle skits at the beginning comments on how super short her skirt is.

user20683
1:26 AM
I can't remember the last JRPG I played that wasn't a parody.

@fbueckert Courage is the power that turns dreams into reality!

I kind of want to post an answer on that meta but I know it's pointless because @GraceNote will meld all of our consciousness and understandings into glorious harmony when he posts hers.

Sorry. Still heartbroken by Symphonia II.
>.>

@RavenDreamer Skies of Arcadia?
That's not a Tales game.

I enjoyed Skies of Arcadia.
It is not a Tales game.
However, it does have Pirates.

1:27 AM
I don't think we should rely on Grace for figuring this stuff out though, it would be cool if we could reach a resolution without waiting on that.

(The good kind!)

She's already busy with enough stuff.

@Mana That's blasphemy.

@Mana Okay. Post an answer. :)

1:27 AM
Also she already said he was working on an answer when the meta was first posted.

@Mana Honestly, Agent86 said what I wanted a lot better than I did, but he posted his when I was halfway through, so I was like @#$* it and trundled on.

@RavenDreamer Skies of Arcadia is one of the only RPGs I have ever finished.

@Wipqozn So at this point, it's probably a copy/paste job.

I think what bothers me about this particular piracy question is what bugs me with other things I sometimes see argued about... we judge the user's motives rather than the question itself. Case in point:
This question appears to be off-topic because it is about having an argument on the front page instead of dealing with it on meta. — SevenSidedDie 42 mins ago
2 weeks from now, no one on the internet will give a shit why a question was posted... just if it's a good question with a good answer.

@Sterno So, Sterno, I was misunderstanding fbueckert earlier.

1:28 AM
Even right now, only like 20 people care.

Perhaps you are too

user20683
I do not care.

user20683
Just for the record

His argument is not that "it's piracy, ergo close votes", but "It's piracy, site policy says it must be closed, regardless of anything else".

1:29 AM
@RavenDreamer I'm pretty sure I understand @fbueckert. I do not think anyone misused their close votes.

user20683
I haven't even looked at the question.

@BenBrocka If you aren't familiar with Evelend, Google 'Pixelry'.

i'm confused by the usage of gender pronouns when referring to grace in this dialogue.
2

I'm arguing about policy, not about them being wrong to cast votes as they did (other than obviously I disagree with it)

@Yawus And Grace likes it that way.
2

user20683
1:29 AM
@Yawus GraceNote is of ambiguous gender

bah

Except to Keith and... Tracey, I want to say?

@Yawus Grace keeps her gender private, so people just choose a pronoun and stick with it.

But it's a dogmatic approach to policy that I do not like. "Site policy says X, so let's bludgeon everything with it for the sake of consistency, even if it doesn't make sense!"

hmm... is "it" considered derogatory in this case?

user20683
1:30 AM
I use both

user20683
yes

probably, considering that's the treatment in most media.

We could probably refer to he/she/it as he/she/it, and he/she/it wouldn't mind. Probably.

user20683
very

user20683
If you want a PC term use something like "ze".

1:31 AM
@Sterno Well, yes, but this way comes off more as, "nothing personal, but I have to close your question", instead of "OMG, BURN THE PIRATE. CLOSE CLOSE CLOSE"

user20683
I just use whichever I tend to feel like at the time

@RavenDreamer To be fair, I do enjoy a nice, crispy pirate with a side of cheese.

@Weston.h that just sounds like i'm trying to act like a cutesy japanese anime character.

@RavenDreamer I think there are people in both camps, but I have no problem with @fbueckert or others who voted to close. I disagree that there isn't a better way to handle such questions, is all.

@fbueckert You are increasing my desire to play a tales game again.

1:31 AM
although they tend to append "ze" at the end of their sentences...

user20683
@Yawus It's a term advocated by the transgendered community in certain circles

@Yawus Or the middle, if they're a French Japanese anime character.

Henceforth, I propose we refer to Grace as, "The Grace"
2

@Sterno Yeah, I agree 100% with you that there is a better way to handle things. I just don't know what it is.
@fbueckert I prefer Miss Note.

misster note?

1:32 AM
We must now always refer to The Grace in third person form.

@Mana " What kind of suitor to an heiress weeps uncontrollably when his imaginary friend's existence is called into question? "

@Yawus Well that's just silly.

@Wipqozn No, too confusing for those asking Rockband questions.

@fbueckert Seig The Grace!

@Krazer My favourite part about your kirby pictures is they are all so adorable.

1:33 AM
But regardless of voting as per understanding of policy, my problem is that the policy encourages judging motive of a question rather that content of question.

Watch. Someone's going to rename themselves to, "The Grace" now.

Were Siegmund and Sieglinde incestuous twins, or am I thinking of some other famous twindom?

@Wipqozn I aim to please.

Likewise, I was very much against the closing of a question a while back that was asked like 2 hours before the NA release date of a game, because "It's not out for you yet"
I really feel like a question should be judged completely independently of who is doing the asking.

@Sterno I know what question you're referring to, but he didn't actually have a problem. That's the issue people had with it.

1:35 AM
@RavenDreamer i think you're right.

@Wipqozn ANd that he was rep farming. But again, who cares if he didn't have the problem so long as it actually was a real problem?

@Sterno You can't engage the people answering your question if you haven't actually played the game.

@Wipqozn Which makes for a potentially bad question, not an off-topic one.

If a new use comes along then they are unable to actually engage the people who answered that question, since they have too low of rep and are unable to ask the question themselves.

That's a pretty weak argument. That's true even if he did play the game and just happened to never revisit the question after asking it, a very common scenario.
Hell, I get answers to some of my old questions now that I have no intention of trying to verify since the game has been uninstalled for a year.

1:37 AM
@Sterno Yes, that's a fair point, but in this case we're making things more difficult for a user just because sean wanted more rep.

@Wipqozn Or maybe we're making it easier for 100 people who came across it googling and found a question asked and answered.

If we're making things more difficult for users it should be because we don't really have a better solution, not because a user wants to increase their rep count.
@Sterno A fair point.

If someone starts question seeding like crazy, we take action against the user rather than closing the valid questions as off-topic, right?
Or am I wrong?
It seems like a pretty similar case.
Maybe it's never actually happened.

@Sterno I'm not sure. I'm not sure if that's happened.
Altough I agree closing all the questions would be silly.

Anyway, now I'm starting to repeat @agent86's answer. Discipline a bad user if necessary. Don't punish the question.
Or maybe I'm totally twisting his words. It's late and I'm sleepy.

1:41 AM
I'd say in that case the proper action is disassociate him with the posts so he loses the rep for it, but the information remains.

shoot the messenger, not the message. /tongueincheek

user20683
Shoot Everything, Ban Anything that tries to rise, Hunt down the cowering survivors that scattered...wait, what were we talking about?

@Sterno That's how I understood his point as well.

If Stack Exchange Inc. gets in actual, quantifiable Legal Trouble over user-generated content relating to game piracy, I'm pretty sure it will be the first time it has ever happened in the history of forever. (Not that I'm hyperbolizing or anything) — Brant 3 mins ago

1:47 AM
@GnomeSlice You'd have to pay me to get that game.

@GnomeSlice i tried it when it was free weekend. didn't really feel all that great.

I think the worst part of this entire thing is that @Sterno was here to enjoy the drama.

@Weston.h It's pretty fun, but when I last played it it was stil kind of buggy

the concept sounds cool, but they didn't execute it terribly well.

haven't tried it since the new name

1:47 AM
@Weston.h are you World Engineer?
PEOPLE SHOULDN'T CHANGE THEIR NAMES
13

And they changed the cool map advancement thing to sitting around a single game the entire time

user20683
@StrixVaria I was, yes.

@StrixVaria i get the feeling this will be the most popular question in the coming weeks.

@Yawus Or Gravatars.

user20683
@StrixVaria I actually changed both but in my case, it was finding my original avatar from 10 years ago and using that rather than the reduced version from latter years.

1:48 AM
@Weston.h I started reading that plot book you recommended. It's a little bit preachy, but it's got some good stuff.

user20683
@StrixVaria yeah, it's a tad over the top

@fbueckert The whole system is full of gray areas. That's why the site is moderated by humans, not scripts. :)

@Brant We can't afford a grey area in this case. It's too open to interpretation, as evidenced by me and @Raven hammering at each other.
We need a proper, consistent policy to follow.

@GnomeSlice That actually sounds pretty neat

@BenBrocka Hopefully they make it this time...

1:54 AM
Sure, when the gray area is too wide, we should work on a policy. But nobody likes a site moderated by bureaucrats following policy. (coughwikipediacough)

@Brant And in other cases, I'm find with using judgement.

Case-by-case basis and all of that. Rationality and reason.

@fbueckert Pretty much the only way to avoid a gray area is "I saw the word pirate, DELETE ALL THE THINGS HE'S EVER WRITTEN ABOUT IT AND THEN BAN HIS ACCOUNT" or "piracy is cool, y'all!"

This one's too fraught with inconsistencies and opposite interpretations, even of the same crazy words.

Even managed to find a grey area.

Q: Additional mouse buttons doesn't work in older games

FabiánIs there a program or driver to make those additional mouse buttons work for older games?

@Sterno A well defined edge case is not a grey area.

@LessPop_MoreFizz It started grey. It eventually got meta'd into well-defined.
(though people still sometimes argue)

@Sterno No, it was never grey, I was pretty clear about the definition from the moment that I brought it up.

@LessPop_MoreFizz You were not the only person answering or discussing it.
The point is, we can argue about bullshit forever.
Clear and consistent is a good goal. Let's be realistic, though. It usually isn't the end result.
I mean, if you asked @fbueckert 2 days ago, he'd say we already had a clear and consistent policy regarding piracy.

Beep Boop Beep

2:04 AM
Eergh, it's still annoying to not be able to suggest edits to meta stuff.

@Weston.h So Grace is the Pyro

user20683
@Fistosaur No, that was Kalina.

MY WASHER WORKS!
YAY!

@spugsley You should celebrate by writing more of your story.

@StrixVaria OH! THAT REMINDS ME
I have a tumblr post your might like
let me find the link
@StrixVaria here I found the dude's actual website. This essay hurt my brain and makes me want to like rewrite my entire everything: litreactor.com/essays/chuck-palahniuk/…

2:21 AM
@spugsley Don't rewrite everything.
That's one of the things that plot book @Weston.h (World Engineer) recommended says.
The one that rang the most true so far.

@StrixVaria how are you liking it?

33 mins ago, by StrixVaria
@Weston.h I started reading that plot book you recommended. It's a little bit preachy, but it's got some good stuff.
I'm not too far in it yet.

@spugsley you are dabling in writng?

@RavenDreamer oh, I've been working on the same novel for like 2 years on and off
but @StrixVaria and @OrigamiRobot are keeping my accountable :p

@spugsley as with all things, i would say "take in moderation".

2:23 AM
@spugsley This blog thing is really interesting.

if every passage i read ended up like that, i can see myself growing tired of the book.

@StrixVaria yeah, he's got a lot of good stuff. Very readable and to the point

@StrixVaria OH! Okay. I never read the book

I believe he liked the movie better than his book.

I haven't read the book either, but I knew he wrote it.
Also yes, he's known to like the movie better.

@RavenDreamer lol that's pretty cool

I read a book by him about a model whose face gets all fucked up. And now I can't remember the name of it.

@StrixVaria I like his advice

I guess it was Invisible Monsters, and maybe she wasn't a model.

All I know is I liked the Fight Club movie better than the book.

I'm glad Lady Gaga is a real person.

@Mistu4u Dota1 is far more widely played. Mostly because in China/Korea the game is restricted. Also, places like SEA, Russia, and South America don't have good enough computers to play Dota2 and so still play the original. It's estimated that Dota1 had about 10-12 million players across the world prior to Dota2. It's probably fallen since then, but there are definitely still a ton of people playing.

@RavenDreamer I love you.

Q: Reduced item sizes in Minecraft

Young GuiloIn Minecraft there are several items that can be placed together in a 3x3 block to create a "block of _". I've seen it done with redstone and coal, wheat and lapis. What other items can be compressed into blocks so that inventory and chest space can be reduced?

@Sterno Because reasons

@OrigamiRobot For all our debates on piracy, I wonder what Anime.SE's stance is on fansubs, which I believe are considered piracy. Correct me if I'm wrong on that point.

@Yawus No clue.

I need to go ask a question about a bootleg version of the Firefly pilot on SciFi just to see if anything at all happens.
(which, by the way, was better than the aired pilot)

I'm just glad to know I'm not alone in my views on that line of the FAQ.
