Q: What benefits do joining city tiles bring?

I understand that joining cities with workable tiles creates borders that give lots of defensive benefits, but are there any other reasons for doing so? I want to build cities along the coast, which will be joined by harbours, but I am unsure if not linking their tiles will cause me problems.

Are there only 96 levels in super Mario world for SNES? I thought every ghost house had 2 ways to exit. But I can't find an alternate exit in the cave ghost house (the cave with castle #3). When I beat all the levels I know of, I get a star beside 96 levels complete. But I think I may be wrong.

Q: Are there any stunt jumps? Or are jumps just to break police pursuit?
