I can compare a Handle to see if it's != INVALID_HANDLE but not != another_Handle. THAT gives you invalid expression, assumed zero

and the above was actually caused by me having too many close parentheses, but of course, the error doesn't actually tell you that.

Q: Quake PC Game (Steam Ver.)

My inquiry is; is there a command\ prompt that can be used to play my installed Quake game via Win98, while my steam account has no internet connection (completely offline)? I had noticed I was able to startup a title from my steam games by rummaging through the directory files of my steam fold...

Why do I feel like the correct answer here is "Since you bought the game, it's okay for you to torrent it now and play it anyway?" :/

7:41 AM
@badp Piracy is never OK!

@Ragnar Piracy? He owns the game.

@badp I know, I was just joking. Personally, I never buy a game unless I've played it before. Most times, this means downloading a pirated copy and trying out the single player, if it has one.

I see nothing morally wrong here. I paid for the game. The game is supposed to run on my computer. Steam doesn't run on my computer any more though. I don't get to play, then?

Conversely, I've only ever bought multiplayer games.

@Ragnar It's okay, I can see people arguing that with a straight face (mainly saying, "Yeah, but it's still illegal.")

7:42 AM
@badp Speaking of which, isn't it possible to launch games from the common folder?

@Ragnar Some games link with the Steam API.
If you try to launch them when Steam isn't running, they won't run, or assume they haven't been bought.
For example, Audiosurf runs in demo mode when Steam isn't running.

I know, but I thought the Quake games, in this particular case, were stand-alone that were just sold by Steam.
Like, there was no cloud involvement.

Eh, Audiosurf barely uses Steamworks (I think only achievements)

Oh, well. It's still not the worst system.

it is however part of Steam's DRM scheme

7:45 AM
Worst system has to be the one implemented in TDU2. That game pisses me off to no end.

"Hey Steam, does this guy own the game? Steeeaaamm, are you there? No? Okay, so this loser doesn't get to play."

In TDU2, you can't play offline/singleplayer unless you connect to their servers. Servers down? Tough!
What also pisses me off about it is that I payed 40Euros for it and now it's only 20. :-(
And the unpatched versions were really broken.
Oh, well.

@Ragnar That's to be expected tbh
TF2 now goes for €7.
Portal was €0 for a week.
etc.

@badp And then it looks at the user, slides a gun on the table and says "Stop trying... It would be terrible if something were to happen to you. Like an accident..."
@badp I know, I got Portal during that week. That was cool.

Indeed. Me too.

7:48 AM
On the other hand, it still sucks that for Steam $=Euro.
The major excuse I've seen is that it includes VAT.
But that's not the only difference.
Most games tend to cost 16-17% for Europeans than for Americans.
They cost, like, 50% more for Australians.

Australia does have poor internet, and annoying videogame laws
Then again, I live in a Steam Tier 2 country, so I can't really complain about their prices.

VAT isn't the only difference. Let me give you an example. $19,99 x 1.19 (VAT)/1.39 (current conversion rate) = €17.11 which makes the game 16% more expensive at the current price of €19.99. Even if the conversion rate was lower, it wouldn't be the same until the conversion gets to a low 1.19. Also note, the difference between USD and EUR is actually increasing.
And to show how unfair it is, the current conversion between GBP and EUR is 1.06, so the Euro prices should actually be almost the same as the GBP one. As the UK prices include VAT, it's sometimes even cheaper than the US ones.

Sometimes the conversion rates used are not the current ones, but those at the time of the contract.

Besides, Norway doesn't have VAT for Digital Downloads.

Bullshit? Probably. Still. Also, there's rounding to the next "nice" number.

7:51 AM
Yet they still pay the same price as the rest of Europe.
@badp They can round all they want, as long as I don't end up paying more than I should for a game.

@Ragnar The obvious solution is to wait for the next deals, when games are dirt cheap :)

Well, sure, they're deals for Steam. But even so, sometimes the deals cost more than on other DD sites.
amazon.com
Has digital download for TDU2 at 16$
Steam has digital download, with sale deal, at 20Euros.
Is this justice? Is this the American way?! :-P

lol, justice.

@Ragnar Last time I serviced my laptop (!) to replace the keyboard (!!!) they wiped the HDD clean (!!!!!) and reinstalled the stock copy of Windows Vista on it (!!!!!!!!) without clearing up their "diagnostic account" (!!!!!!!!!!)
In short, no, there's no official way.

Wow.
Is it still in warranty?
If not, you could do it yourself... Buy a new GPU and install it, I mean.
Personally, I'm a fan of ATI, I would recommend getting, like, a 5850M
But that's just me, no need to go spreadin' it around.
On the other hand, I've yet to find an online store that stocks up on mobility hardware...

8:44 AM
@Ragnar Nevermind the horrible Linux support of AMD cards, I don't think one can just swap video cards in and out. Does that thing even fit in this case? :/
I mean, nVidia native stuff sucks too, but the Nouveau unofficial FOSS drivers have just reached enough maturity to be used normally.
Actually I find it hard to imagine worse support for Linux than what nVidia brings to the table, but it's apparently entirely possible.

Well, Linux support sucks all 'round.
I have a ProBook 4520s with Ubuntu 10.04
Took me a couple of days until I could get my network card to work.
Took me a couple of weeks until I could get the wireless to work.
And it's still dodgy.

8:58 AM
@Ragnar Depends, really. It's fabulous for some stuff, shoddy on other.
Some network cards do have trouble on Linux, yeah
this laptop pretty much works out of the box in Ubuntu; only have to take care manually of the 3D card.
under Windows 7... not so much.
Luckily networking did just work.

That sucks.
Hey, do you know any selenium/webdriver?
(pro'lly not the best place to ask, but I need some help...)

@Ragnar Hm, not really. I'm not even sure I know what you're talking about. But, there's jQuery. It's perfect and does all things.

It's OK, I'll ask on SO. :-)

9:24 AM
Ah, found it after google-ing.
I couldn't resolve driver.get();
But I already had it resolved.
WebDriver driver = determineDriver();
That fix'd it.

Ooooh, WebGL?
You must be up to no good.
No wait, that's not JS.

Selenium 2/WebDriver
I'm writing java tests and running them as JUnit
The site uses WebDriver and smartgwt.
Which pisses me off, 'cause I know jack about programming.
Oh, well, it's a learning experience.
Also, it pays good. :-P
I got hired as a Java Automated tester with virtually no Java experience.

ohhhh. Java.

And no automated testing experience either.
I was a blackbox test for 3 years before I landed this job.

Blackbox test?

9:30 AM
Which, to be fair, all my "experience" did next to nothing to prepare me for white box testing.
Black Box tester is the tester that, um, tests the GUI.
Not the code.

Speaking of GUI... goes check if he can make more suggestions on Steam Translation

Test the GUI and functionality, but do it manually.
Now, I'm testing the code itself, in addition to testing the GUI and functionality by writing automated tests in Java.
I really like this job, but, hell, it can be difficult sometimes.
Oh, well.

It appears not. Oh well.
@Ragnar Sounds good.
Damn you Steam. I thought all I needed was 5 mod approved suggestions to have more than 5 at any one time. Instead I need 5 applied suggestions
It doesn't help that I want to revise half of the strings I read. :P

Q: Taking out Turrets in Call of Duty Black Ops?

BrianHello, What are the ways to take out turrets in Call of Duty black ops? I know these work: Rocket Launcher Knife I assume ammo, if you live long enough? Grenades probably, maybe a couple tacticals? Thanks.

10:36 AM
@ThomasMcDonald Well, mostly correct except I don't see how a shift in demand would lead to a decrease in consumer surplus. Producer surplus would increase, but that should not lead to a change in consumer surplus unless price elasticity of demand changes
Correct myself there, but I think consumer surplus would increase

11:32 AM
@YiJiang I think prices will rise, because that's what they do.
This is much more important than any other law of economics.

@badp Erhm... yes they will, according to the law of demands

Out of curiosity, when you have the YER can you still cloak normally with the menu?
or can you only cloak via stabs?

yeah, if it's a straight shift in demand then the 'area' of consumer surplus will of course increase - the base & height of the triangle it creates increases

The main reason I'm retaking this module is the fact I picked the wrong data response question - there were questions on buffer stock schemes or public goods (particularly flood defense schemes).

4:12 PM
@Lazers Hrm... this really strikes me as... something off, but I'm missing the words to describe the exact reason. Anyone want to lend some eyes on it?

4:43 PM
@GraceNote Perhaps because gaming is not really integral to the question. It is structurally identical to "Does this song resemble a song from Movie X?"
@GraceNote But we've done this song and dance before. The question usually boils down to "Is this interesting enough to gamers?" and does that counteract the fact that it's only tangentially related to gaming.
Seems we decided "no" in the case of gaming-related video recording: meta.gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/1402/… but "yes" regarding gaming-related content delivery systems: meta.gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/2125/…
More examples could probably be found

5:03 PM
@GraceNote @sjohnston It seems too subjective to me. I do like the question to some degree - but something about it just nags me. I really don't see how their can be a firm answer - more so since he is asking if it sounds like a MI song to "us". I don't know... I do like it, but... I think it belongs in the chat, not as a question - I really just don't see how their can be an answer to that.

This week, the Stack Exchange podcast travels to England, where Jeff and Joel are joined by Stack Overflow legend Jon Skeet (and son!) along with Marc Gravell.

Jon needs your help!  If he is chosen to speak at DevDays 2011, what do you want to hear him speak about?  Enter your suggestions in the comments to this post. Sadly, Jon was having so much fun with the podcast that he forgot to put dinner in the oven halfway through the taping – hence we are left with this picture of the three sitting on their laptops, waiting for dinner to cook while accompanied by a papier-mâché dragon left over from a recent birthday party for Jon’s children. …

@Wipqozn I guess I read it as "is part of this song identical to a Monkey Island song," which I think can be answered definitively by someone with a good ear (not me!). As it's written now, it's asking for opinions, which I agree is another mark against it.

@Wipqozn I think there's quite some level of objectivity involved -- see this question no one really raised an eyebrow about:

Q: What is this sound from?

badpListen All I know is, it comes from a game made in 1986.

Q: Where does the Illusion World song from Chocobo Racing come from?

/cc @GraceNote - although I agree that the question could do with a rewrite

@GraceNote so would a stack of quick links be better then, so people could mad-lib whatever close comment they want?
Do you disagree that a comment like

Oh, and apparently it's true that Microsoft is buying Skype.
I can just imagine Judge Balmer: "I bought Skype in order to dismantle it." and going on some speech about information superhighways and stuff.

They were clogging the tubes!

@badp Your examples are asking a definite question. That said, you may be correct - it could just be in need of a rewrite.

@Powerlord The main reason they did is because they can jam the Skype brand/features into tons of existing MS products, like the Xbox, Xbox/Kinect, Windows Mobile, Windows...

Especially Office.

6:04 PM
@ArdaXi damn straight. Need skype integrated into my MS Office.

@NickT Yes, but apparently most of the features Skype has already exist in those products.

@Wipqozn It's planned.

It irritates me that most of the decision-making and discussion threads about how to do things for all SE 2.0 sites take place on the SO meta. Why should I have to build up SO meta rep to discuss things that are going to affect gaming.SE?

Nguyen? Where have I heard that before?
@badp That has nothing to do with the feed. It's about rep.

So, if I complain about not being able to discuss on gaming.SE, will you add a feed to cooking?

@Powerlord Perhaps.

6:09 PM
@NickT Nor do I - to some degree, at least. I wouldn't be surprised of MS starts adding fees to it or some none-sense. As in fees just to use it at all.

@badp You know, it irritates me that all the questions about computers are being asked at Super User. Why should I have to build up SU rep to ask/answer things that affect gaming?

@ArdaXi Game-related questions from Super User are already relayed here. I'm glad you agree it's a good choice.
Also, you can post to Super User anonymously (unlike on MSO)

I'm not sure how having the questions relayed here addresses the problem of needing rep there (MSO) to discuss them.

@badp No, no, questions that affect gaming. Not questions about gaming.

anyone use notepad++? I can't find the reflow text option in the new version

6:10 PM
@Powerlord I can see the reason for us to put an eye on videogame questions not asked here.

@NickT Anyone who doesn't use Notepad++ is a bad person

@badp We were talking about the MSO feed.

@badp isn't doing that...

If you care about SE, you join an SE chatroom.

@ArdaXi I also can see the reason for us to put an eye on MSO questions that affect our site.

6:11 PM
@badp If you care about them, you should join /that/ chatroom.
Those questions aren't relayed to our meta either, are they?
Or made public in any other form to the other 99% of our userbase that doesn't use chat?

This is the chatroom for Gaming.SE; I care about Gaming.SE; those questions change Gaming.SE.

@badp This is the chatroom for Gaming.SE; we care about Gaming.SE; those questions are posted on MSO. For a reason. If we were to inherently care about them, they would be posted on our meta.

@badp Go look on MSO yourself. Jeff called it the third place. Repeatedly.

As the innocent instigator of this contentious issue, I find it a little amazing how much vitriol is expended on something that plops a bare handful of notices in chat on any given day.

Which doesn't mean "meta.meta"

6:15 PM
@badp Gaming.SE is first, meta.gaming.SE is second.

@sjohnston A couple users just like to argue against me
The weight of their arguing is adjusted to their volume obviously

@badp I argue with @GraceNote, it's more of a challenge

@badp Oh right. It's not like you can make mistakes or anything. People just like to argue with you. Convenient.

for example, I've never once complained about Bacon, despite it being unrelated to gaming. And I'm pretty sure there are a lot more posts about bacon than MSO in a day

Anyway, since that seems what you're stuck on believing, it's pointless to argue with you.

6:17 PM
@ArdaXi Oh, so your arguing suddenly isn't pointless?

@sjohnston That's just because I keep mentioning bacon, I'm sure.

I have a solution to make everybody happy, just wait a second

@badp No. I've jokingly claimed such, but I do honestly start arguing for actual reasons.

Don't actually know what determines whether it's a half hour or an hour, but last time it happened to @LessPop, he got an hour.

@MatthewRead Since apparently the flaggers don't. ;-)

@Powerlord A hard limit built into the compiler seems a little extreme

@GraceNote Might be cumulative as well.

@Wipqozn ...that's GENIUS!

@ArdaXi Haha, touché

6:23 PM
@Matthew Every time we trust that, we end up with someone suspended. I'm... kinda keen on avoiding having people suspended from here.

You could turn CreCountForJobLastCreIdForJobScheduledGroupRequestExecutionUpdaterHandler in CreCountForJobLastCreIdForJobScheduled(GroupRequestExecutionUpdaterHand(ler()))

@GraceNote OK, no more joke flags from me

Well, in this case, it was a variable to a handle (external data source)

I'd prefer AddPaintedHatToSpy over AddHat /* this function takes a spy and gives it a painted hat */, to give an example.
(Actual examples would be slightly longer)

@MatthewRead The flags are shown to all 10k+ users on the whole chat network, without any context. This has lead to some misunderstandings in the past

6:26 PM
Oh yeah, not that anyone here cares, but Mapchooser Extended 1.5 and its sound module are essentially complete. I just have to package them up for transport and test a few last things in the sound module.
Also, kicks Valve for not supporting 48kHz sounds in Source, but including 4 with TF2

@ArdaXi I agree with your example - but it should be both concise and convey what the function does. If your function name length needs to be excessive in order to do that, chances are your function is doing too much.

@Powerlord Excited to be done?

@sjohnston Kinda/sorta.

@Wipqozn True, I mean, by all means separate your methods. Just don't just truncate the names.

@ArdaXi I'm not saying you should truncate the name - but that you should separate your methods, which in turn would truncate the name.

6:29 PM
@Wipqozn Right. We're on the same page then. (Hm, I don't say that often.)

OK, class. Open your books to page 232.

If I could star from this interface, I would've done so.

@ArdaXi Oh goodie. I can leave on a good note then - but before I leave (for home), just wanted to say... Welcome back @Arda-Xi

@Wipqozn Oh, come on.

Speaking of Stars in Gaming, everyone needs to go get TF2's Star of the Show achievement to get the Director's Taunt. :)

6:31 PM
@Powerlord Well, sure, that's one way to get it.

@ArdaXi It's not that hard to get... save a replay and hit every button in the interface.
I mean, literally every one (every other players camera view included)

Oh, right. I got that one legit.
I was thinking of the hat.

The hat's the one that takes 1000 Youtube views.
I'm not sure if that's across all videos or just one.

@Powerlord Right. But, more importantly (and disgustingly) it takes QuickTime.

Here's to hoping Valve fixes the "replay" bot taking a server slot today.
Whoops, meeting to go to. Be back in 30m or less.

6:34 PM
@Powerlord I thought that one was .

@GraceNote You've found a place you can't star from?

@badp I can still star from the transcript if I bothered. I just can't star from the mobile UI.

@GraceNote Oh. Good point

Meeting got delayed 30m.
@ArdaXi Nope, and Valve has stated (both on SPUF and the Dedicated Server mailing list) that they're looking into it.
Here's hoping they fix the maxplayers SourceTV bug in the Steam Server window while they're at it.
SourceTV on a server? Steam count will be 0/25 players empty, 24/25 full. TF2 count will be 0/24 empty, 24/24 full.
And heaven forbid you try to fix it with sv_maxvisibleplayers 24... Steam count will be 0/24 empty, 24/24 full. TF2 count will be 0/23 empty, 23/23 full.
