@Zaid actually Gradle stands for "Maven, are you kidding me? Have you ever looked at a POM? I mean seriously? Why would it look like such a pile of nonsense for so little actually function? Talk about signal to noise ratios...." The problem is that that doesn't make a sensible abbreviation so they just called it Gradle.

@BobCross POMs are blech, I know what you're talking about. Give me a build.xml any day.

@Zaid I've become super taken with build.gradle. The density of useful content is a lot higher.
Boy, people continue to get fussy about this question

Q: Do I really need to wash the outside of my car?

GeorgeSome people say they wash the outside car every week as it makes the paint nice etc Are there any benefits of washing the outside of my car? Do I really need to wash the exterior of my car every week? Does it damage my car if I don't wash it for a month or two? I would like a general answer, ...

Q: What could be causing my front right brakes to get tight and decrease in speed very rapidly on a Ford Focus 2006 zx4?

OB1gamerxDWell I've been having this problem for a long while now causing me not only frustration but not to be trusted at work for getting there late and other personal problems. I'm trying to sell the car now , since I can't find the problem nobody would take the car as it is. On a normal day it woul...

@Myself the car washing question seems to push buttons in some people. "So you're saying I'm a bad person if I don't wash my car?!" 🙄

1:40 PM
I have to admit, it gave me the same feelings. Normally I wash my car by driving it on rainy days

2:08 PM
The OP asked if there were physical benefits to washing, not emotional. Trying to turn the answer into an ad hominem is silly. If I wanted to say, "you're a bad person," you wouldn't have to ask what I'm saying.... ;-)

Q: Best diameter for exhaust valve opening for sound/performance

AlexusThe story: I have a turbocharged 2l engine in my car, and a 3" straight through exhaust, that is very very loud and drones. So, I bought a cable operated inline butterfly valve, that can be opened and closed and install between the test pipe and mid-pipe. Currently valve looks like this. Obv...

Solve the need, not the problem

@Zaid Heh. My instinct was "put the muffler back on."
In today's exercise of high tech wizardry, I am doing development task breakdown by writing down words. In pencil! On paper!!

@BobCross It IS the best opening ever.

I feel like I should expand the list of things that you wouldn't have to deal with if you only drove your car in a featureless void. No need to wash the car, it's never exposed to oxygen! :-p

Hey there @DeepDeadpool
Sorry to have to close the question

I went shopping for cars over the weekend, and I found a 2014 Camaro LT with 7k miles. It had rebuilt status.

I saw pictures of the vehicle after its accident. The damage sustained was cosmetic and it was very well repaired. I'm quite confident the vehicle has suffered next to no internal damage based on the accident description and pictures. I also drove the vehicle myself and it handled well, but it still had that rebuilt title status. After speaking with another dealer and my bank, this title status meant.

@DeepDeadpool voting to close shopping ... oh wait. Foiled by the sacred laws of the chat room! Curses! ;-)
More relevant to your real question, I don't know what the effect would be. Are you talking about something equivalent to a deer strike? I hit a deer a while back, ruined some sheet metal and broke the radiator but no damage to the structure or anything. Is that the kind of situation that you're describing?

@BobCross Sort of. Seller said the previous driver scraped a guard rail

Q: What sort of maintenance do GDI injectors need?

ZaidThe 2014 Lexus IS350 reminds the driver that "injector maintenance" is required every 10,000 km. Besides this advisory annoyance, as far I can tell there is no difference in drivability. I don't think this is a case of Lexus being over-protective. The engine utilizes gasoline-direct injection...

Trying to sort out my thinking before I do something rash with my turbo…

@dlu Words to live by.

dlu
It's a VW Jetta TDI with a VNT (variable vane turbo) and boost pressure is low and doesn't seem to track engine speed. A common cause of this is a failed or sticking vacuum actuator, but that does not appear to be the problem here. The actuator moves when asked to either with a MityVac or when the ECU asks for boost. The car has reasonable power, but smokes and doesn't have the punch of a TDI. Am I correct in thinking that with an intake or exhaust restriction would I would see some boost?
@BobCross :-)

Is there an actual mechanical pressure sensor as well? When I last had strange boost limitations, there was a flaw in the vacuum line leading to wastegate actuator. I was seeing half expected boost on the gauge. My car is totally different from yours but it's one of the failure points.

dlu
The boost pressure sensor is electrical. Also the seat of my pants says low boost…
Don't have a waste gate, variable vanes instead. That part appears to work, but I can only see the outside of it, so it seems possible that perhaps something has failed on the inside and while the actuator is moving nothing is actually happening.

@dlu an intake or exhaust restriction can definitely play a role here
How can you rule out these possibilities?

dlu
9:16 PM
@Zaid, I would think that they would "scale" the turbo output, but wouldn't cause it to flatline. Also, the engine seems "strong" – just smoky and not turbocharged. It is kind of lame at altitude and weaker than our other TDI (and the boost pressure reported by VCDS (ODB-II reader for VW cars) hovers around atmospheric pressure).

@dlu is it running rich?

dlu
Yes, although I think the real answer is "not enough air." As opposed to too much fuel being injected.

@dlu yes, it's a bit chicken and egg
How feasible is it to run the engine with as much of the intake plumbing removed as possible (up to the turbo inlet)?
@dlu have you ruled out the possibility of a boost leak? It could be somwthing as trivial as a leaky intercooler (if your Jetta has one, that is)

9:37 PM
Is there a place here to ask mechanic-to-mechanic questions? For instance, I'm itching to ask about iATN experience vs. IDentifix... not in a price shopping kind of way, but just experiences if any. Is there a place for such a meta question [obviously not the SE "meta" sense, but a question that is not a specific problem at hand, and is strictly interesting to professionals, not a paticular case ??

dlu
@Zaid, easy to run without intake plumbing. Not entirely sure about the possibility of a boost leak. I don't hear anything…

@SteveRacer why don't you ask it on the main site?

dlu
@SteveRacer, I would think that would be an interesting question on the main site. Obviously many of us would have nothing to say, but I (at least) would be interested in the glimpse into how things work in the "real" world.

Agree. Plus there's folks like Ben who may actually be able to answer
@dlu if you can remove the intake plumbing then try to assess boost levels without it to see how much of a difference it makes. As for boost leak audibility, YMMV

@SteveRacer - I'm not sure about exactly what you are asking about, but it seems on target to me as well. Technical questions are definitely on topic.

10:02 PM
Thanks for the responses, guys. My concern is that the kinds of questions are largely about the vagaries and efficient running of an automotive business, only indirectly "MV Maint and Repair". Again, that's kinda why I used the word "meta". They would also probably venture close to opinion based answers.
"Have you found a difference in comebacks between Duralast and Centric Rotors? How much of your budget is dedicated to keeping software current? Are there any marques you refuse to service?" ... along these lines. Probably belongs somewhere else -- outside of chat, but not in SE MVM&R

dlu
10:50 PM
@SteveRacer I'm not so sure. Granted the questions are kind of "meta" but they also help to illuminate what differentiates a "shade tree" mechanic from a professional. I would also think that most of the questions could be stated in ways that try to avoid opinion.
