12:00 AM
but that would be too far
so now I see how it works

You must be looking at the wrong diagrams, then. Are you sure you aren't looking at the 5.9L diesel?

I just looked up how a camshaft works

Which is an overhead cam

and all the diagrams showed the cams on the shaft pushing the valves directly
but what you showed me makes sense

I would imagine :D
I always make sense :o)
NOT!

12:02 AM
Ha, well pictures speak 1000 words
or so they say

You can have a setup like this one!! :D
Make sure you put your kerosene heater under the truck so you can stay warm.

I could actually pull it into the upper level of the barn... but I'm afraid of dust
other than that I'm outdoors

Yah, that dust is nasty stuff ... just might attack you or something.

Well no there's really tons of it

You afraid of dust getting all over your work surfaces?

12:04 AM
it's a 150 yo bank barn

"bank barn"?

It will work its way into whatever you put in the barn so far haha
@ᴘᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 yeah, banked up on one side, so you can access the upper level from ground level.

OH! Gotcha
I've not seen very many of those.
But they make sense and seem they would be very useful.

somethin like that (thats not mine)

The only thing I'd be worried about with it being 150yo is whether it can take the weight of your beast.

12:07 AM
If I back the tractor out I an pull in upstair with the truck
Oh yeah I have the loor there blocked up
*floor
built a block cold cellar underneath for overwintering stuff

Kewl. Just me being worried about safety. The few barns like this I've seen left a little to be desired in the stability department.

It would hold, but it's about the temp of outside and it's very dusty (although dry)
wow that last bit...

Well get busy cleaning!

I think this keyboard needs new batteries...
@ᴘᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 ugh I dread the thought

Either that or get some 6mil sheeting and block off the area.
Box it off and put a space heater in there with you ... be nice warm, dry, and no dust to speak of.
Sheeting and duct tape will do the trick!

12:11 AM
ha
There actually used to be an old car in there

Duct tape and I are on a first name basis
I call him Duckie.

was a 40 something chevy I think it looked super old
but it of course wouldnt start
that was looong ago

You just weren't prodding it correctly.

there was also an old motorcycle

12:13 AM
well it came with the barn

Anyway, gunna let you go for now.

friend took en both years an years ago
@ᴘᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 yeah have a great evening

Have a great evening.

2 hours later…
1:55 AM
Hey @ᴘᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 what about a 4 barrel tb instead of my 2

2:07 AM
also can there be a post like this on here? gardening.stackexchange.com/questions/1147/…

2:27 AM
I was thinking like a 1000 cfm throttle body

3:11 AM
@J.Musser I suppose you could bolt one on for decoration :D

ha

9 hours later…
12:35 PM
@Zaid - I did some research on the Interwebz and didn't find a thing on liquid sodium cooled F1 engines . You have any references? That would be an interesting read, I'm sure!
@All - How do we entice others to actually answer a question? ... :
I just did a google search for "SJB Smart Junction Box" and I now know what they do. — HandyHowie 2 hours ago
I believe it has been discussed before (maybe it was here in the chat, though) about not giving snarky answers about "go find it in Google" ...
I've got to go play in the snow ... I'll talk to you all later.

1:26 PM
@ᴘᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 It's mainly for cooling the exhaust valves

@paulster2 The question about the Smart Junction Box, that you said to add any information I know. To me, this is a "I can't be bothered to do my homework" question. On the electronics stack exchange this would be quickly closed.

> 5.17.6 Valves must be manufactured from intermetallic materials or from alloys based on Aluminium, Iron, Nickel, Cobalt or Titanium. However, hollow structures cooled by sodium, lithium or similar are also permitted
@HandyHowie we had this discussion a while back. The consensus was (and still is) that the EE.SE approach to "silly" questions is not something that should be emulated here.

@paulster2 It is not a matter of being silly, just lazy.

Q: How do brushless motors provide more torque and longer battery life to cordless drills?

ZaidI was in the market for a cordless drill and came across a drill manufacturer claiming higher torque and longer battery life since it utilized a brushless motor. Is it true that brushless motors tend to have higher torque than their brushed counterparts? I'm assuming that the efficiency of such ...

This was my attempt at a question on EE.SE and it was closed for various reasons
They have a very different modus operandi

@zaid If you had shown a small amount of research, they would more than likely have answered it, which I agree with in some ways. I do think they take it to the extreme, but it does stop people getting them to do their school homework for them.

1:37 PM
Well, I guess I don't know what qualifies as research then for EE.SE

@zaid Do you think we should answer all questions even if they clearly want you to do their homework?

I haven't seen many homework questions on this site. There have been a few but are usually informative enough that the community likes them
The turbo intercooler question springs to mind
16
Q: Why do we need to cool air after it leaves a turbocharger?

nivass baluWhen we are using a turbocharger to compress the incoming air, the air gets hotter. Usually this hot air is cooled by using intercooler before it is passed to the engine. But what is the reason behind cooling this air? Why can't we pass it as hot air, since inside the engine the air will be co...

At least he knew what an intercooler does.

2:07 PM
@Zaid You are talking about sodium filled exhaust valves, then ... those are actually used quite extensively in racing and performance applications.
@HandyHowie - While I understand your position, what does it hurt to get the information on Mechanics.SE?

2:59 PM
@Paulster2 and @HandyHowie I think Skeptics is probably the most strict site, with EE not far behind. Mechanics is definitely not the least strict by a long shot. And generally, we would far rather have the information here. One thing we are reasonably strict on is not allowing "Just Google it" posts, as they just don't help.
Once out of Beta things often change, with sites getting a bit more strict, but at this stage we can't afford to be that picky

@RoryAlsop - I think that's what has been discussed before quite extensively.
@RoryAlsop - How are things?

@ᴘᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 good thanks - taking a couple of days working from home as kids are off for a two day half term, so feeling quite relaxed. Aside from still not having time to sort my motorbike, and having to write a presentation for a conference next week :-)
and you? All good?

@RoryAlsop - Oh the life of a Rock Star :o)

@ᴘᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 I know, right

@RoryAlsop - I'm doing well. It is snowing ... about 3x as much as they were suggesting (said 1-3" ... we already have over 8" without letup).

3:03 PM
@ᴘᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 wow - we had 8 hours of snow yesterday and none of it remains today

Snow? What is that?

:-(

We didn't even have Winter in Texas this year.

@RoryAlsop - Oh, not a bad thing. I'm hoping they will shut down work tomorrow, lol!
@JPhi1618 Winter isn't over yet! Don't believe all the hype from Punxsutawney Phil
He's just a reason for weatherpeople to go to Pennsylvania on a lark.

Nah, not Phil - it's our weather forcast... 70's all week leading to a high of 81 on Friday.
In North Texas. In February... It's been a very warm winter for us.
Our Feb average temp is 60.

3:07 PM
@JPhi1618 we've been at between -4 and +2 for the last few days. Exactly the wrong temperatures - snow won't stay, but you have to scrape off the ice every morning :-(
dunno what those temps are in Fahrenheit

Without looking, probably 28-34ish?
But yea, those temps are annoying, and when we do get snow/ice that's normally what the temp is.
Anything that falls melts during the day and freezes at night.

@JPhi1618 I was hoping February would give us some decent low temperatures, but so far no joy

How low does it normally get where you are? I figured it would be pretty temperate.

@JPhi1618 - Latitude for Scotland is ~55N ... latitude for Montana/Canada border is 49N ... think of Canadian weather except with Lake effect going on (considering they are an island!)

3:25 PM
Interesting... Didn't realize the latitude was that high.

I didn't realize it until recently. They do, however, get a little bit of a break from the Atlantic current which flows up by them. This is the current which comes up from the Caribbean. At least I believe they do.

3:59 PM
@ᴘᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 yep - we get the North Atlantic Drift hitting north west Scotland. So it never gets very cold. We did have a -20 winter a few years back but that is rare. Normally we have -5 to +25 over the year. Rare to get much outside those.
pretty temperate all year

You are still using Celcius here, right?

@ᴘᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 yep

so it never gets very hot or very cold

My son was in Anchorage, AK for three years. They get the same thing going on because of the Pacific currents hitting them broadside. They get cold, no doubt, but not like the rest of Alaska.

4:02 PM
suits me though - I cope best between -10 and +15

That's good ... but getting tires warm for racing must suck :o)

@ᴘᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Warm up is essential, yes, but I guess that is true anyway, wherever you are

I'd rather not have < 0 ever.
Bad circulation in my hands - they're worthless in the cold.

@JPhi1618 - My wife has recently been prodding me to look at the Phoenix area to live/work.

4:07 PM
@JPhi1618 Ahh - yeah, I sympathise. My wife has a similar thing
whereas I can't cope with high temperatures at all

It's always been that way for me.
When I had a motorcycle, I had to have heated gloves even for mildly cold days. "Good gloves" were not enough - had to have an active heat source.

Those are nice! Heated grips are good as well :o)
I think I'm going to build me a V8 snowblower this year though ... I think I can build one for what it would cost me to buy a regular one from Lowe's.

Self-propelled, I hope, lol.

Yah baby!
Talking about the heated grips got me thinking about it :D

No need for a V8 - just put an engine from a Hyabusa on there.

4:16 PM
Run the coolant through the handle bars and you have toasty hands!
@JPhi1618 - No way! A V8 is sooooo much more cool in this application. Besides, I just happen to have one in the garage which isn't doing anything :0)

Man, that "What's the point of servicing a car?" question... "Cars... They last forever right?"

@JPhi1618 - I had much the same thought with that one.

2 hours later…
@Zaid Awesome Sauce!

6:50 PM

Q: Are manual transmission cars disappearing?

Gabe12You don't have to be an expert to notice that overtime, the percentage of manual transmission cars has lowered. Automatic cars are not only more popular, but more comfortable, easier to use and actually better in fuel efficiency. I've searched in the internet for graphs showing the proportion of ...

Look! Opinions!

Ha, yea.
I would actually like to know why the US has such a small percentage of Manual cars.

@JPhi1618 yeah - it always seems weird to me that the norm there is automatic. Here it's still not - despite an upsurge in automatics
Maybe it's weight/size. European cars would have had more of a negative impact of automatic gearboxes as the cars are much smaller and lighter

I just don't know what caused it? Was it just marketing?
Hey, @RoryAlsop, do people still get cars with non-electric windows there?
That's another thing that's just unheard of... Probably still more common than a manual tho.

@JPhi1618 actually, I haven't seen one without in ages - if you exclude odd things like Caterhams etc

What do you think the number one reason for people to choose a manual are?
Is it cost?
If you can get an auto, why not?
(note that I drove a manual for 10 years and would do it again... just asking)

7:00 PM
@JPhi1618 errr - I kind of don't understand the question. Why would anyone get an automatic?
If we exclude things like top end single seat racing cars - which do have amazing gearboxes. I do like them.

Well, no I was asking why so many people in the UK choose a manual.
Sorry for the odd wording.

But any normal car with an automatic is hellish to drive - you lose fine control over power/torque, you run a real risk on the edge that the car will decide to change gear at an inopportune moment, they feel...like slugs
and cost will have an impact
I would definitely not want a car with an automatic gearbox or cruise control
oh, and additionally, it would make me fall asleep

Does the average person really care like you do tho?
That's awesome if they do...
People here just don't want to bother with shifting gears. It feels primitive.
Too much work.

@JPhi1618 it feels like driving :-)
Admittedly I am a bit more of an enthusiast than your average driver (ie I will drive to drive, rather than drive to get somewhere) but many do think that an automatic is just lazy

I think people should care more. It's the largest purchase most people will make aside from a house, and people have no idea how any of it works.
I feel like I can't get a manual again because my wife wouldn't be able to drive it if she ever had to... :(
I think I'll troll my kids tho (if possible in 10-15 yrs) and buy them a car with a manual.

7:07 PM
@JPhi1618 here, I think if you pass your test in an automatic, your licence only allows you to drive an automatic - that's a huge problem

Really?
Wow, that's interesting.

I'll need to check, but I think so. Well, it is a skill
if you can't correctly change gear, that is a risk on the road

Here you can pass the test in a Prius and then get behind the wheel of a 15000lb moving van...

@JPhi1618 not sure how I feel about that. Little scared...

One theory I've heard tossed around is that Europe is more hilly than the US
Hence more in need of manuals

7:11 PM
@JPhi1618 Here we have various classes that all require separate tests. Eg basic car, small motorbike, small caravan and small truck all straightforward, truck over 3 ton need another licence. Public Service Vehicle another, Articulated truck another etc

(if only life were that simple)

@Zaid and many more really tight corners

If you ask me it all boils down to convenience and cost

@RoryAlsop, I think we need more licenses.
We really just have motorcycle, "normal", and then a commercial licenses for very large truck/trailers and busses.

1 hour later…
@DucatiKiller I like the fact on the SJB it says, "Scrap if dropped" or some such ... not very resilient. One good accident and it's done.

yeah, seems like it.
they say that about helmets too. If you drop it, throw it away..

@DucatiKiller, I love lmgtfy...
Anybody have young kids?
Hey @HandyHowie

Hello. Just catching up on the current conversation.

It's been dead in here for a while.

8:46 PM
I was just reading through the manual/auto discussion, but then realised that was an hour ago.

You're in the UK?

Yes
Where are you?

Texas.
Do you see any other reason that people in Europe still love manuals?

That's right, you were asking what snow was earlier, I believe.

Ha, yea. We're not going to see it this year for sure.
We normally only have 1-2 days with snow.

8:50 PM
I think that most people just don't consider them, they have been brought up on manuals and don't know any different.
I have has jaguar autos and love them, but i
oops
i have an auto LR discovery and also a manual one. I prefer the auto, but can also see some benefits of the manual.
Until recently I had a 1971 Triumph Spitfire. I couldn't imagine that in an auto. It would have to be manual.
In the UK just about everyone learns to drive a manual, because if you learn to drive in an auto, your licence only allows you to drive autos. I guess that pushes everyone in the direction of manual transmission, too.

Yea, Rory mentioned that about the licenses.
That could be one of the major factors.
Even if your parents had an auto, it's really in your best interest to learn manual.

When we were looking for a vehicle for our son, we found out that manual shifted vehicles require more attention. It helps those with short attention spans to pay attention while driving. Since he had a short attention span, it was a match made in heaven.

@ᴘᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2, that's a great point. That was my thinking as well.
It keeps you more focused on the car, and I think gives you a better understanding of driving in general.

It worked pretty well for him ... I think he's a pretty good driver now. He and I drove from Northern Idaho to Virginia last August. It was a great trip to spend with my kiddo.

"Push pedal and go" leaves a lot of room for distraction.
2

9:05 PM
No lie

When I bought my first manual I had actually never driven a manual other than a motorcycle.
It was a fun ride home, and of course there's a big hill right outside of the dealership.

When I was selling cars, I had a young girl (early 20s) buy a standard shift car ... she brought it back a little while later and told me she didn't know if she could handle it. I told, "You'll be fine!"
Famous last words, I'd bet, lol!

Ha, nice.
Chances are it was ok tho.

The thing is - there is so much to pay attention to when driving, it becomes second nature quickly.

9:59 PM
@DucatiKiller ha thanks for posting the sandbox those are always fun

10:10 PM
@JPhi1618 I love answer questions with LMGTFY. It feels like I'm righting a wrong
@J.Musser You have some crazy sandbox going on in there.

@DucatiKiller Yessir. Always fun

Q: Will slamming doors shut damage my car?

GeorgeI hate it when people slam my car doors shut, as I am convinced that they will bend and will create wind noise. Is it bad to slam car doors? Will it cause the doors to bend?

You don't have to justify everything to your friends man!
Tell them not to slam the doors because you said so.
@DucatiKiller, you beat me to the answer.
My opening sentence was "Unless you're friends with the Avengers, I wouldn't worry about the door bending or the seal being damaged."

I didn't have anything that you didn't cover.
+1

He could have changed it to, "Is it bad to treat my possessions poorly?"

"Is it bad when your friends don't show you any respect at all?"

I added a small tidbit.

10:39 PM
@JPhi1618 Totally out in left field, I'm wondering if Texas was supposed to get more winter rain due to the El Nino effect? We were supposed to but it hasn't really panned out for us.

my one friend slammed the door shut and it latched with his thumb in
3

We haven't gotten anything but warmth.

and it was locked
and he didnt have a key

OMG.
Was he alone?!

Ohhhhh man....brutal

10:40 PM
he there was some family members in the house

@JPhi1618 Yup. That's the first question!

but he had to call them on his cell phone

Because that's some crazy 127 hours isht there...

LOL!
He then cut his arm off with a pocket knife

Seriously... Man, I couldn't imagine.

10:41 PM
Yeah. "Uh hey, can you come unlock the car dear? My thumb's inside with the key..."

My luck, I would have left my phone in the car.

jk jk

We were trying to have a relaxing El Nino conversation and you drop that on us...

ha

yeah....that was a real shocker

10:43 PM
top or bottom

I'm going to kick my car door shut for a while after that.

I visualized it and immediately imagined myself in that position
TOP imo

That's a hard choice to me. Top with different wheels and a modern drive train.

@JPhi1618 We had a couple of good December rains that were multi-day and then it's just died. It's been beautiful warm weather, akin to spring here in the SW.

Yea, us too. It's 70+ all week with 80 on Friday...

10:44 PM
lol everytime I close my door my thumb is on the outside. I dunno what kind of ninja moves he was attempting...

Average should be around 60 right now.

we're at 83 today

I like the top one more too

Oh, top would have to have A/C.

so far 99% of people I ask like top better

10:45 PM
our average is 67 according to the interwebs

It dropped to 8 F. here last night
-4 the night before
wind chill -23

Fan of the top for aesthetics for sure.

The stance on the bottom on is hard to beat tho.

They are both nice in different ways
Bottom looks burly and powerful

@DucatiKiller yeah. The other one looks plastic imo, like if it scraped it would be fragile

10:47 PM
F that... -23 doesn't even register for me.

haha

I've had too many injuries. When it get's REALLY cold (to me that's below freezing) I'm falling apart. I need the heat. I'll really be bumming in my 70's due to some of my early injuries.

the cold is why I'm not doing much work on me truck

I'm outta here guys. Enjoy the rest of Washington's Birthday.

Hey do yall think the frong wheel drive u joints are something I should atempt to replace myself
@JPhi1618 Yeah
If he was alive today he'd be rolling in his grave

10:51 PM
I'm going to get a cherry pie from the gas station to celebrate.

cheers

@JPhi1618 Take care
@J.Musser I would say sure but I don't know what your sill level is. If it can sit for a day or two if you get stuck then, why not? Just go for it.

@DucatiKiller hmm true
except if I can't figure it out I'd hate to pay a towtruck or something.
hahaha

They usually aren't too bad but some designs can be klugy in terms of getting them off of the half shaft. Mixed bag.
If you couldn't figure it out you could pull the half shaft and take it to a shop where they could replace and you bring it back and install.

I also don't even know where they are
although i havent looked
Mech just said 'bad front wheel drive u joints'

10:58 PM
They in the front of the car
jk

you're kidding

I am....but I'm not...whoah
what kind of car is it?

I know what a u joint is haha but haven't really looked at em on a 4x4 haha
see my 2006 dump truck never has any problem whatsoever

Yeah, I'm sure the thing is just a beast
put it in high 4 and just idle it through a house
errrr...low 4

exactly
4 low and idle into the bank vault by accident
but yeah in 4 low it can idle up a hill with a heavy box trailer ha

11:09 PM
@ᴘᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Was cruising around and found one of your movie questions, nice observation and love the sagan reference (the guys one my hero's)
15
Q: Did Hugo Weaving Copy Carl Sagan to play Agent Smith?

ᴘᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2I happened to be watching an episode of the 80's show Cosmos which was hosted by Carl Sagan. Sitting and listening to his voice, I was puzzled, thinking "Who's voice does this sound like?". I came to the conclusion he sounded just like Agent Smith from The Matrix. My question is, Did Hugo Weavin...

@DucatiKiller - I remember in Chemistry class our teacher was discussing the three dimensional representation of a four dimensional cube. He had one made out of these stick things ... it was awesome to think about. I didn't realize he had probably gotten the idea from Sagan.

I struggled with the 4 dimensional cube. lmao...oh the memories
Is this what you speak of?

No
But that's pretty cool!

of course not.....I'm still struggling then.
My chem teacher is still not very proud of me.
2

I think it's where the name "Tesseract" came from.
I mean it's like that ... kinda

11:15 PM
my dad always called it a octahedroid
but I think Tesseract is more correct
if it's possible to be more correct

I don't know that much about it. I just know when Sagan described it, it made sense.

There is a point in Cosmos where he explains photosynthesis. I think I was 13 or so. I understood it for the first time and I began to get chemistry a little better as a result. I never understood the carbon connection regarding 4 points until then. Perhaps I was slow. From that moment on Sagan was my man and still is in many ways.

I saw 'photosynthesis'
lol

The 2014 photosynthesis explanation and animation in the new Cosmos was stellar too. Tyson is carrying the tradition on well.

11:19 PM
@J.Musser I'm looking up the part number for you now.

@ᴘᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 ah sweet

Try: FEL-PRO HS9898PT2
You'll want to replace the head bolts as well. While not absolutely needed, it's a good idea. These aren't torque to yield bolts, but still, cheap insurance.
Head bolt kit: FEL-PRO ES710381
You'll need two sets of these to do both heads.
Then you'll have a couple of bolts left over.
But if you ask a dear old internet friend ... I have some left overs from when I did the Dodge truck, so could send those to you. I believe you'd be able to get by with one set if I did.
HOLD THE PHONES! If you get that FEL-PRO kit I just posted, I think there's enough head bolts for both sides.

11:34 PM
you're the best

I believe that's what you need (IIRC) five short/five long for each side.

Q: Why do cars still use mechanical blinker relays?

sergiolI think the electronic relays may be cheaper; and having less moving parts they are theoretically less prone to break. So, why do cars still use mechanical relays for turning lights?

I've been looking for the last 15 minutes for an example of an electronic relay ... I'm still looking. Either I'm not finding them readily available, or my Google-Fu is not up to par.

@DucatiKiller that or hypercube, yes
I remember studying them so hard for a while I ended up dreaming them - that was weird!

@RoryAlsop - Holy crud! I've not studied them that hard, lol!

@RoryAlsop If you stare at the animated gif long enough your eyes begin to close and your start mouth breathing. It should come with a disclaimer.

@DucatiKiller - But it's the drool which is the dead giveaway.

11:44 PM
@DucatiKiller heh - hang on, I'll see if I can find one of the really useful multi-dimensional projection animations I came across when studying multi-dimensional rubik cubes

@RoryAlsop - Oh snap ... you really are trying to kill us (or make us go brain dead)!

@RoryAlsop Beware. All question answering from the chat room will be suspended for an indefinite period of time.

This one - if you enjoy rubik cubes, this makes it incredibly difficult
but some of the moves are wonderfully tesseract-y

If you don't see me for a week you will know why. Good link.

@RoryAlsop my brother can solve in a couple mins
I cant solve to save my neck
that one looks other-worldly

11:48 PM
my eldest and I quite like them, so have a wide range of 3x3x3, 4x4x4, 5x5x5 and weirder ones, so the 4D ones are just brilliant fun
@J.Musser try this one:
:-)

that looks complicated...
xD xD

@RoryAlsop - Oh, that one is awesome! Have you looked at the Hypermegamix 3?
HOLY CRAP!

@ᴘᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 gives me car videos

A: Why do cars still use mechanical blinker relays?

Rory AlsopI can think of three reasons straight away: Cheap Easy to replace Have a very distinctive click that makes it obvious when they are on, and when a bulb has failed They also are very well understood - anyone can fit one without needing to understand much about electronics

Good answer, btw :o)
