Home Improvementdiy.stackexchange.com

Launched Q&A site for contractors and (serious) DIY'ers

Note that DIY.SE graduated 4 years ago

Dan
8:41 AM
@Zaid Great site thanks! I'm really interested in the Ethernet wiring questions and then self sufficient energy home questions.

9:38 AM
@Anarach - why did you approve the previous edit to this question? mechanics.stackexchange.com/questions/13368/…
It didn't really make any sense...

I approved the spelling changes . from meneik to mechanic

Including the bizarre title?
I think meineke is a chain of mechanics in the US
according to google...

Wow, didnt notice that..

Fair enough! I fixed the title
but left the text as 'mechanic'
as it's clearer

I think we need to revert it to meineke so that people don't have similar experience with the shop again.
what do you think

9:47 AM
I'm not sure, I'm always inclined not to mention particular places, especially chains
problem with chains is that while one branch might be awful, others might be really good
and I don't know enough about that one to say what they are like
perhaps one of our US based colleagues can provide some insight...
@Paulster2 @BobCross thoughts?

10:22 AM
@NickC - I think I'm fine with leaving it mechanic of Meineke as such. I'm not big on rolling an entire chain under the bus, as I'm sure there are good shops/bad shops out there. I do realize in my accepted answer to the question, I point out the name of the chain there, but I also mention it's probably an isolated instance.
Some might be wondering why I put a chain name in there when the OP (now) doesn't mention it.

No need to get personal by mentioning names of shops if you ask me. Leave that kind of stuff for social media
Looking at the edit history on the question, I wonder how SE is handling edits made by 'Community'.

What exactly does "Community" mean?

It's like they have an army of leprechauns chipping away at such questions

Is that the "super mods" who don't want their names to be known?

Community♦ (moderator)
Hi, I'm not really a person.

I'm a background process that helps keep this site clean!

I do things like

Randomly poke old unanswered questions every hour so they get some attention
Own community questions and answers so nobody gets unnecessary reputation from them
Own downvotes on spam/evil posts that get permanently deleted
Own suggested edits from anonymous users
Remove abandoned questions
So probably an anonymous user bumped that question and proposed the modification

10:30 AM
Haha! Probably someone who works for a Meineke shop, lol.

Lol

What is an abandoned question? One where the user has requested their username removed?
It must be early ... I was going to look something up ... space cadeted ... now cannot remember what I was going to do.

Q: StackOverflow.com is for sale?

the_nutsI made a whois search and I found this... How much do they want? I'm just curious

@Zaid -Good info. Thanks.

Yeah, it's a hot meta topic at the moment :)
Hi Steve, is this your first visit to The Pitstop?

It certainly is. I hadn't realised just how much there is to this website!

Not many people do. We're trying to change that though

Hola Steve! Thanks for stopping by The Pitstop

11:04 AM
We needed a Caterham expert and now we have one :D

We also have a sandbox for exploiting other's questions ... er ... ah ... helping people to flesh out their questions before they post them ;-)

It's a great resource. Especially when you read threads such as the lady with the broken rocker cover gasket and they told her five hundred to fix!

I agree. Whoever thought up the idea to damage her stuff was doing their business a real disservice.

Oh yes, the Caterham. We have a new one turning up in October, a 420R. That's going to keep us busy over the winter!

Caterham?

11:06 AM
So what's the latest hp/ton figure? Does it still trounce annihilate the Veyron?

@Paulster2 Haven't you heard of Caterham?

I think I saw one once on Top Gear, but not much beyond that. It does have one thing over the Veyron ... ugly.

Yes, it's replacing a CSR-200. The only thing we ever came up against that gave it trouble with a Radical.

And it runs a Ford engine ... argh.

11:14 AM
Yes, the CSR had a 2.3 Duratec. It was built by Cosworth though ;-) The good thing about the Ford engine is that you can get parts simply and quickly. If it were mine personally I'd stick a Fiat/Lancia Twin Cam under the bonnet though

I'd rather have an Ariel Atom:

@SteveMatthews Any particular reason for the Italian powerplant?

Way cooler from many different vantage points.

@Paulster2 That has a Honda engine

Those atoms are pretty balistic, we've seen afew of those at track days and they do shift! I've had quite a few Lancia's so know those engines pretty well.

11:20 AM
Delta Integrale?

Maybe you saw the TG episode, but you can get a V8 in them.

@Paulster2 Yes, I was talking about the original Atom

And nothing wrong with 365hp out of the 3S ... nothing slacking about that.

I've had two Delta Integrale's, a really early (ex-press fleet) 8V and a Group N 16V rally car. The 16V used to spin all four wheels at 70 MPH!!

And cheaper than the Caterham as well.

11:23 AM
@SteveMatthews No ABS I assume
@Paulster2 I take it you're a GM guy :)

No, cadence braking all the way ;-)

@Zaid - You keep saying that like you forget from day-to-day ... what's wrong with you? ;-)

Q: Clunking Sound in 2008 Chevrolet Malibu

Branden HenryI recently made a post about a sound coming from the front end of my 2008 Chevrolet Malibu. The sound occurs when I accelerate fast or break harder. It also makes the noise when I go slowly over bumps. The other time it makes the sound is when I go around a corner and when I pull out of the turn ...

Just wondering ... should we close this as a dupe?

Dupe of?

The previous question which he asked about the same exact issue.
He states it right up front in this question.

Q: Clunking sound?

Branden HenryI just purchased a previously owned 2008 Chevrolet Malibu with 100,000 K on it. Whenever I make a sharp left or right turn (making a 90 degree turn rather than a shallow turn), the front end makes a clunk sound after I pull out of the turn while centering the steering wheel. It also does this clu...

Oh!

11:26 AM
I'm sure I remember that one. I think I'd suggested CV joints?

Didn't see that

He states the previous owner had replaced the CVJs

Yes, I've seen a few cars like that. "It's been replaced so it must be fine" only to find it's been badly fitted or hasn't even been touched.
...but yes, it's definitely a duplicate of the previous thread.

A lot of users with blue icons today
:-)
welcome steve

Hi Anarach :-)

11:34 AM
What is the significance of a "blue icon"?
And GM Anarach

Move more comments, Dan and Steve have similar and confusing icons
so does Nick and Zaid
i see at the members in the room and cant figure out who is here unless i roll over my mouse

Oh, gotcha ... I still need more Mtn Dew this morning, sorry
The system here at work doesn't like to do any work, so it doesn't download most of the icons. I pretty much only get my icon and the rest are just the names.
I voted to close that question as a duplicate.

I suspect the others are copying me? ;-)

The new one.
Yah, that's it Steve ;-)

Agreed, it would be better if he updated the previous question with the new details

11:40 AM
Only two icons are iconic, Paul who seems to be high on pot and @RoryAlsop who looks like a mad scientist

Already voted to close
@Anarach You're not innocent - I remember you tried to put something hilarious as a profile pic a few weeks ago ;)

@Zaid I admit , I tried that , looked cool when it was in the profile editor (bigger image) looked stupid when it shrunk on the questions and answers

@Anarach - I was going to object, but realizing now what you are talking about (through my sleep deprived hazy mind) could get what you're saying about my avatar pic, lol.

removed it promptly he he he

I would consider changing mine only if blue became unpopular...

11:47 AM
GOOD NEWS!!!(In james may's voice) The Trio are hired by Amazon :-)

Heck, I've been on SE for 5+ years and never bothered changing it. What's not to like about geodesic patterns?
(I think that's what they're called)

Where do you get hold of these words dude?
not sure if its just me
you speak too much English for me
Have pity on us

I think he's popped the keys off his keyboard, chucked them in a scrabble bag and given them a good shake.

@Steve Hmm... you never know , that might exactly be the case.

:)

11:52 AM
Good thing English is not your native language.. Who knows how that would have ended up like

I'm glad the trio are hanging together ... they definitely have a chemistry.

I even had to resort to wikipedia

Poor you :)

NO.. POOR ALL OF US

Oh, wow ... it's way to early in the morning to be reading such gibberish.

11:56 AM
The sun is past the yard arm here in the UK

I may have to go get my third Mtn Dew of the day already.

Mad scientist? Me? :-) That is what this character is supposed to be - a mad scientist who teamed up with an intergalactic warlord and made Erik Tricity

@SteveMatthews - In the grand scheme of things, the sun is always past the yard arm ... it's out in the nether some 93 million miles.

ROFL

I fear I may need to find some of this mountain dew of which you speak..

11:58 AM
Nectar of the Gods I tell you

@Paulster2 In my part of the world , mountain dew is a drink

And drink of choice for all serious programmers (whether actual or wanna-bees like me).

a carburetted drink

In my part of the world it's sold as a drink but I'm convinced by the colour that it's screenwash additive!

@Anarach - Yes, carburetted, ROFL! I'm a motorhead, therefore I must be carburetted in the morning.

12:00 PM
well looks like that too..
@Paulster2 My bad
carbonated
not carburetted

@SteveMatthews - ... or possibly antifreeze?
Haha

I like carburetted better, more in keeping with the theme of the room lol

Exactly!

LOL

:D

12:01 PM
we shall write to Pepsico

Which is exactly what I thought you were playing at @Anarach
I'm losing all faith in you!
So much better the other way

ha ha ha

Lol
In all honesty, the color puts me off

Do you have Tizer where you are? It's a fizzy pop, much like Coke or Sprite. Anyway, I had a friend who used it as temporary brake fluid in a Land Rover one night.

We'd get a faster response from Dale Jr.

12:02 PM
Bob will be thinking , " What madness is ths"

@SteveMatthews You're joking!

we have activity in this chat room... This is madness..
@BobCross Notice anything strange
:-)

It was either that or drive home on just the handbrake. He did have some brake pedal too. Second or thing press but was better than nothing.

Other than carbonation ... there isn't too much alike about Coke and Sprite, @SteveMatthews

@Paulster2 Ahem.. Its carburettion .. get yourself together sir

12:04 PM
@SteveMatthews Wait, don't the Cubans have something for this? I think it's alcohol-based

Exactly! Tizer is also a carbonated (carbuteted?) suggary drink but made a surprisingly effective alternative to brake fluid.

@Zaid HELLL NO
i knw about that cuban drink you speak off
its evil..

@SteveMatthews - Sometimes the McGuyver approach is the best approach as you get yourself out of the rutt you are in.

Oh yes, now Cuban vehicle servicing is a fine art! Mixing asbestos brake materials with their bare hands.

Well, now that the "embargo" is over, they should be moving back up into the real world.

12:06 PM
@SteveMatthews Sanctions do that to you, I suppose. Necessity is the mother of invention.

I'm sure if we had some Cuban contributors on the site they'd give the most amazing answers you've ever seen.

Yes, like how to extend the life of a leaky valve cover gasket :)
Or even better, how to perform a smoke test :D

@Zaid HA HAH AAH HAHAAH AHAHHAHHAHA

So guys, what was the reason to switch over from 6V to 12V batteries at an industrial scale?
2
Q: Fluctuating ammeter on 1948 automobile

JayOn an old auto 6 volt (generator/regulator) system, what causes the ammeter to fluctuate between zero and -35 amps? Seems acceptable at idle but fluctuates on the discharge side when driving. Will occasionally zero out for a second, then begin fluctuating again.

^ This question reminded me. The "classic" cars use 6V. Modern-day vehicles follow a 12V standard

And big trucks use 24v systems

12:13 PM
I'd imagine the steady increase of electrical demand has something to do with it

Why do american trucks have a big hood up front while trucks around most part of the world dont have the massive hood. Apart from the fact that it looks badass

And rather than increase current (and the heat associated with it) it made sense to up the voltage instead

@Anarach - I guess you haven't noticed the trend in Big-Rig hoods has grown smaller and smaller.
Aerodynamics is where it's at.

Come on , seriously? aerodynamics on a truck

Absolutely

12:16 PM
i think only the small flap on top of the driver's cabin would matter

Every little bit helps. Especially now that diesel prices are higher than gas prices.

Wow.. Diesel is much cheaper in my country compared to petrol
that is why we have the onslaught of the TDI
and only some rare true sports cars on street
everything is diesel here..
even honda had to resort to developing a diesel engine to survive here.

where is here?

The Glorious Nation of India

that's right ... sorry, I have issues keeping things straight.

12:20 PM
home place of chicken Tikka
diesel is like $1 a liter

Anyone know why western countries use Gallons? instead of liters

We are still not on the metric system?

what is it with the wheels

12:23 PM
and why is america not on the metric system

All examples of aerodynamics in use here in the States
Trying to get better fuel economy.

Ok the tyre size reduction for "AERODYNAMICS" ON A TRUCK is insane

Not tire size reduction ... the hub caps allow for less turbulence, which improves air flow.
Those are also "super-singles" ...
better traction than two regular tires.

really? didnt know that

Same basic ride height, but wider overall with a greater foot-print.

12:26 PM
oh so the world has moved on from two regular tyres.. Waiting for it to catch on here LOL

And besides, they look cooler.
'-)

Say what you want, looks like rear tyres of a BMW X6 lol Massive

Super Singles tire size = 445/50R-22.5
That's quite a bit wider than an X6 tire, I think.
17.5" wide
Even the Camaro Z28 only has 305's on it ... :D

#Sarcasm
U need to sleep sir

You need to know, sarcasm is lost on the internet.
And by the way, I need to do a lot of things ... sleep is overrated so I tend to only get as much as is required by law. Besides, I can sleep when I'm dead.
Do we have any electronics geniuses on here who know Citroen systems?
3
Q: Citroen C4 Grand Picasso 2007 Multi Function Screen C failed

Willshaw MediaI've just bought a C4 Grand Picasso, love the car, super practical and comfy. The electronic dashboard is working fine, but the multi-function screen portion is completely blank. So I have a speedo, rev counter, fuel gauge etc and althought the radio/cd player works I don't get anything up on ...

12:54 PM
@Paulster2 Best bet would be to check a Citroen forum
I hope it's just a matter of reading the owner's manual

Electronics and Citroen strike fear into my heart. A friend had a CX and every wire in the loom was the same colour!!

@SteveMatthews Going into the ECU?

No, the whole wiring loom. Was an absolute nightmare as everything on the car was electric.

Oh boy! There was a Wheeler Dealers episode which showed a neat wiring loom "trick" - label what each wire is for
It was for a muscle car if I remember well. Mustang? Challenger? Stingray? Can't remember
Does anyone follow Wheeler Dealers?

On most cars they're colour coded and there will be a colour key in the manual.
Yes, I've seen quite a few of their episodes. I'm sure I've got Mike following me on twitter too.

1:04 PM
@SteveMatthews I know. Looks like someone at Citroen was cost-cutting
@SteveMatthews Really? That's interesting
How come?

He was getting some online abuse over his weight, I said something nice. It's not much fun when people get bullied online.

Oh, I see
I was hoping you were a legend of some sort on the UK car scene :)

Only in Volkswagen circles I'm afraid. Mk1 and Mk2 Golf GTI's specifically. I used to mod the old Performance VW forum which sadly isn't there anymore. Nowerdays my car life is slightly limited. Haven't competed since 2009/10 season and even had to sell my Porsche. (Baby seats don'e fit in tombstones very well) but I wouldn't change it for the world.
I still get to play, I've got an old Golf I only drive on a Friday, that's my toy plus I get to build a new Caterham later in the year and do all the track days that come with it.
My son is 18 months now and tends to carry hammers and screw drivers around the garage so that's a promising start! :-)

Lol, tell me about it. My daughters do the same thing
They'll be washing their rides
My 4-year old commented on how the Ferrari 458 was a "silly car" because the "important stuff" (engine bay) was at the back

ha ha ha, brilliant, be sure to explain the Herbie is the same ;-)

1:18 PM
What's Herbie?

:-O
Herbie is one of the most famous Beetles of all time.

Ah, the air-cooled one, I assume?

Yes, I'm sure your little ones will enjoy the films if you can find them :-)

If Mk1/2 Golfs are your thing, I'd assume you know a thing or two about continuous injection
There aren't many cars on the road with those setups any more

Oh yes, good old K-Jet :-) Mind you, I did run one of my Golfs in twin Weber DCOE's, that was an animal! I'm good with VW, Lancia, Mini (proper ones, not new ones), '70's and '80's Porsches, kit cars, rally cars and Dodge Vipers.
No, there used to be quite a number with the Bosch K and L jet systems but I think everything has gone electronic due to emissions probably.

1:29 PM
@SteveMatthews It is an interesting evolution. Carbs -> continuous injection -> pulsed injection -> direct injection
Paulster and I were discussing DI setups yesterday

Apparently British Leyland did a version of the Rover SD1 with an ECU controlled carburettor which used stepper motors and worm drive screws to adjust the mixture in realtime. Worked about as well as anything else they tried (i.e. it didn't). Fascinating that they tried it though.

What! British Leyland!
Hahaha

Back in the 70's or very early 80's

@Zaid Dude you have kids?

1:34 PM
i assumed you might be close to my age.. :-(

@Anarach that's not the surprising thing! @Zaid hasn't heard to Herbie!
*of Herbie even

WAAAAAT...

@Zaid you're going to have to watch the Herbie films now. I can recommend Herbie goes to Montecarlo as he falls in love with a Lancia Beta Montecarlo (another car with the stuff in the wrong place lol)

@SteveMatthews We still have remnants of British Leyland here in India
Ashok Leyland is an Indian automobile manufacturing company based in Chennai, India. Founded in 1948, it is the 2nd largest commercial vehicle manufacturer in India, 4th largest manufacturer of buses in the world and 16th largest manufacturer of trucks globally. Operating six plants, Ashok Leyland also makes spare parts and engines for industrial and marine applications. It sells about 60,000 vehicles and about 7,000 engines annually. It is the second largest commercial vehicle company in India in the medium and heavy commercial vehicle (M&HCV) segment with a market share of 28% (2007–08). With...
They make good trucks

@Anarach How old are you?

1:38 PM
26

I'm close enough then

I think you guys got the Ambasador as a taxi for some years?

@SteveMatthews Ahem, decades

Morris Oxford to be precise :-)

Some of them have been in service for over 40 years

1:40 PM
@Zaid You hit a wall at 40mph and the wall crumbles , its simple as that.
best taxi in the world

They do have bags of character :-)
Do you know why Morris cars are named after towns? Like Oxford?

nope

Rumour has it that the guy who ran Morris at the time was having an affair with his secretary and used to name cars after the places they'd met in secret.

LOL things people come up with
:-)
or... He could be the Brad Pit of the CEO world.

1:43 PM
We also have the Royal Enfield Marquee to ourselves now
Splendid bikes..
totally crappy in every imaginable way compared to the Japanese but they have character.

Classic! Although I personally prefer good old BSA from the british bikes.
As you say, totally outclassed by the modern machines though
Still, bags of character :-)

I think BSA made Cycles in india and one motorcycle. Didnt import the Lot

They did a bike here years ago called the Super Rocket. It was a 650 and a really cool bike. Good old cafe racer. I knew a bloke who had one that used to be a marshals bike at Croft race circuit. Such a good looking bike. Better then a Triumph Bonne in my opinion

Speaking of triumph, I saw one today no the roads, pretty rare , pretty good looking. Still I love the RE look.
I am just thinking how the british motor industry would have been if the Leyland disaster didnt happen.

I think it was inevitable. They produced an awful lot of cars to a very poor standard. As the likes of the VW Golf and Toyota Corolla came in and started showing the world how it should be done, britain was on strike.

1:53 PM
@SteveMatthews : Are you following Project Binky on YouTube?

Strangely in india , VW cars break down more often than the Italian or the american.

I've not watched any Project Binky but I will do. I used to compete in autotests and sprints in an old Mini, great cars!
In the UK the main problem tends to be rust.
I guess we get weather that isn't good for bodywork but is great for keeping engines cool lol

Here the main problem is other drivers :-)
everyday its like a game of GTA from office to home and back. You discover dents everyday

I've seen footage of Indian traffic! It looks more crazy than Rome!

ROME???
ROME is nothing you peasant
Traffic is a tool for population control. Kill some here . kill some there and viola

2:00 PM
One of my best friends went traveling and was in India for some time. He had a scooter while he was over there and he tried to describe the things he saw. Like whole families travelling by motorbike...

Dangerous but "Economical"

He also told me that he bought fuel from children at the roadside, not from a petrol station.

That happens very rarely when you are in a remote village with no fuel stations. I personally have encountered it only once and it was from a old lady.

Q: Is it better for car's longeviety in cold climate or hot climate

AnarachLeaving out performance aspect ( Since cold weather is best for that ) I want to know which is better to maintain a car and its longevity. My arguments for Hot weather: Engine reaches optimum operating temperatures quickly. Oil is thinner compared to cold weather thus better lubrication. Bette...

2:26 PM
Was going through our chatroom history
Afterwards Larry just quit i think lol

I wonder is he'll ever come back and be surprised that there are people here

He really quit after this ..

2:51 PM
You do realize that "Larry" and "Move more comments ..." are the same person?
He changed his screen name.
You also realize those postings you pulled up are ~3 years old?
@Anarach - Those comments are for you, my friend ...

Brilliant! :-)

1 hour later…
4:10 PM
Lol

4:20 PM
@Anarach - You laugh because?

4:35 PM
Guys, do regular/low-rep users see ads when the site is in Beta mode?

Absolutely no clue on that one.

I just logged out to check; can't see any ads
Now why on earth would they not graduate us and benefit from a 30k-views-per-day community?
By they I mean Stack Exchange
Think of the ad revenue

Oh, great logic, no doubt. I'm not sure that SE is completely propelled by logic, though.

@Paulster2 Haha
Why of course its driven by logic; they emanate that stuff on Stack Overflow
Fill the world with love and binary

@Zaid - BWAHAHAHAHAHA! Yes, of course they do.
I didn't go to eight years of evil school to be called Mister!

3 hours later…
7:34 PM
@Paulster2 : You'd better meet Jafro at this event ;)

8:19 PM
@Zaid - Yah, I don't think I'm going to Ohio to meet Jafro ... I'll have better things to do ... not sure what right now, but I will, lol! (I'm sure the wife will have something to say about it, lol!)

9:01 PM
@Paulster2 : Just pulling your leg

@Anarach About? Other than the fact that I only hear about these @ messages a day late and after a thousand postings have scrolled past? ;-)

@BobCross : You've been missing in action, sir!

10:03 PM
@Zaid, dude, I'm not missing, I'm working! I see some / all of your chat antics on my phone but I can't pound out a BCWOW during a meeting about [stuff] and how we need it to do more [things] at [places] for no money and get it all done by yesterday.
