@DucatiKiller - The problem is Jim Stanley doesn't have an account. If you click on his name and go to his "profile page", you'll see that it shows as "unregistered". Hopefully, he will piss or get off the pot in actually signing up on SE. If he did actually read the Help/Tour sections, he might actually figure out he's not doing anyone any good by trying to comment on other's posts. We'll see.
@DucatiKiller - You can upvote him all you want, but he will never be able to comment due to the fact the points are only associated with the answer he posted, not to the user in general.

3:34 AM
@Paulster2 hello

3:45 AM
@Zaid - You have insomnia, or just getting up?
Sorry I didn't see your post about 20 mins ago ... I was reading all of the activity from today!
Also, there was a question from a Pete which was drawing some attention ... what's going on with that? I see JPhi1618's post starred on the side: "We see what you're up to Pete" ... I don't know if the something is nefarious or if JPhi is just playing around? I didn't see anything which appears to be going on there.
@@BobCross & @@Movemorecommentslinktotop ... you both see the good news? I didn't see you here in the chat, so thought I'd throw this out to you.
@JonEricson - I'd also like to thank you for the encouraging news! I'm sure the rest of the regulars here are as excited as I am! :D

A: How can we increase the number of eligible voters?

Paulster2First of all, I'd like to say I'm excited at the prospect of graduation. I, along with many others, have put a lot of time and effort into this SE to ensure it not only succeeds, but that it flourishes as well! Thanks for the vote of encouragement in knowing that our humble SE is being observed :...

Merry Christmas mate

Our boy seems to have a misunderstanding between what static compression ratio and dynamic compression ratio is ...
Merry Christmas @Anarach
I hope you are doing well.
You were having some flooding issues IIRC?

Yup.. Lots of flooding and stuff

Is everything okay now?

Yup, Nature decided to give us swmming lessons
Yeah now its good

7:42 AM
Hopefully you didn't suffer any losses.

Yeah, lost my ESP guitar :-(
apart from that nothing
we were prepared , moved stuff to higher ground

Good on your preparedness! Being prepared is the best way to survive. Sorry about the guitar, but if that's all you lost, you're in good shape.
You gunna be hanging around more now?

7:59 AM
@Anarach - Good to see you on here. I really need to head to bed. I'm sure my wife has a whole list of things for me to do later today ... it's almost 3am here ... I shouldn't have drank all of that Diet Mtn Dew today!!! Argh! I also drove down to see my son which was about 10 hours in the car ... oh, the things we do for our children!
@All - If I don't see you later today, please have a safe and Happy New Years! Yah - Viva La 2016!

3 hours later…
10:46 AM
@Paulster2 And a happy new year to you!
I have been looking at the site stats. We were averaging around 120 votes/day until this week - nearly double that the past two days.

Happy new year to you too @Paulster2 if we don't catch up later

5 hours later…
4:17 PM
@NickC - I'm glad to see you talk about it! You are probably the only person on here who has outvoted me, and I truly appreciate it! :D
We still need to get newer people voting on stuff. I'm wondering how we can promote the badge aspect as there are several which are tied directly to voting.

4:46 PM
@Paulster2 I do some when time is here lol
which means not enough

@J.Musser - All I ask is you can do what you can do. You've been very active in voting in the past. I also notice you've probably been very busy in your "real world" ... so being here may not be on the top of your list.

Ciao all

@Paulster2 Yes. Also I became a pro tem at Lifehacks
so that became more of a priority

Absolutely!

@Zaid o/
@Paulster2 You should see GL. No one votes over there

4:49 PM
GL?
Good Luck?
;-)
No clue

Gardening & Landscaping

GL = Gardening & Landscaping

@Zaid - Hola!

You did a lot of the voting there this year @Paul

@Paulster2 J. Musser is our resident treehead

4:51 PM
lol
That's a term now

@J.Musser - I haven't been over on G&L lately. I've been a lot busier at work, so have had to cut down on where I'm spending my time.

836 votes is still a lot

Compared to everyone else, I bet.
I've got over 4,500 votes here.

I have 7911 there
1120 here

That's a lot of voting on either!

4:53 PM
Lol on GL almost twice the total votes of the next guy

:D
I think I'm only beat out by Nick C here, but would have to look again.

@Paulster2 yup
by 163 votes
ha

But not by much, lol ... beat me to the punch, lol

haha all the time

I have to get rolling this morning. Was hoping to see our Mods on here so we can get them motivated about site promotion.

Q: How can we increase the number of eligible voters?

Jon EricsonOver on Meta Stack Exchange, we've announced a process we call design-independent graduation which allows us to confer all of the benefits (and drawbacks) of graduation without waiting for our designers to replace the beta theme first. So far the experiment has worked well. We've been watching th...

I guess "graduation" would be the proper term.

@Paulster2 oh yeah.

Yes, excited is probably an understatement.

When you say promotion I think of it in the other sense

4:58 PM
We need to be doing more of that as well, lol.
Anyway, thanks everyone for all you do. I wish you a Happy New Years! I hope you don't get snubbed by your significant other come midnight! :D

Looks like 2015 was a good year for y'all

Yes, sure looks like it's been on an upward spiral. That's thanks to users like you @J.Musser ... remember, you are part of this crew as well!

@Paulster2 kinda-ish
:)

Wait, there's a GL? Is that needed in addition to DIY SE?

@JPhi1618 Absolutely, yeah

5:07 PM
Man, I hang out on DIY and never even knew about that.
I'll have to add it to my rotation.

Most DUI people don't have training in plant health care like I do

@JonEricson Posted an answer to an existing question on the same topic as per your request

@Zaid, I can't see videos. Not sure how common that is in the corporate world..

@JPhi1618 well you won't lose anything compared to the present status quo then

@J.Musser Would a "how can I improve drainage in this "valley" between houses" with pictures be well received on G&L?
Yea, @Zaid, not advocating against it or anything... Just making the comment.
More info is always better. video, pics, or otherwise.

5:22 PM
@JPhi1618 Yeah, as long as it wasn't asked before
it should
I mean something specific with pictures is good

Yea, I'll search when I get a chance.
I've read about french drains, but I really don't know if they HAVE to be 24" deep. Seems excessive.
Plus theres burried phone, electricity, and fiber optic for two houses there.

I don't know mark johnson
Good link TY

7:41 PM
@DucatiKiller: Another cool link I didn't know existed (for each site): mechanics.stackexchange.com/users?tab=moderators
You can get a ranking of users by rep.

right on. keep em coming and you discover new nooks and crannies. goood stuff

For those with more than 5k rep, there's the site analytics page as well

@DucatiKiller - Yah, the "Move more comments link to top" is Larry Smith.
I've met him personally.

Lives out there?

He has more irons in the fire than I can shake a stick at.
Yah, he lives in the Fayetteville, NC area, not to far from where my son moved.

7:56 PM
entrepreneurial spirit.
congratulations to you for where the site got

@Paulster2, nice mixing of metaphors.

it's quite an achievement

@DucatiKiller did you play around with the site analytics yet?

yes, clicked on them
@paulster It looked like only tworeports, mostly voting and traffic source

Gives some great insight into site activity, traffic sources, metrics in general

8:02 PM
wish there was more

You can see the impact you've made on voting too in the past few weeks :)

@JPhi1618 - I was looking at is as redundant cliches, lol!

I've been a voting fool, going to older posts too and trying to answer old unanswered questions
I can't believe how many questions I've read in the last few weeks
Do you get more advanced reporting with more rep?

But you're the man, @DucatiKiller ... this is really easy-peasy stuff for people of your ilk! :D

@DucatiKiller Lol, I wish

8:05 PM
What do you mean, "advanced reporting"?

more metrics, deeper info, user habits, how long people stay active when the use the site...things like that
votes by GUID (rather than username) perhpas so you can look at voting habits/trends
There has to be some really fun data in there that a sociologist would kill for

@DucatiKiller that kind of stuff is accessible on data.stackexchange.com

oh really..... :)
Can private chats be setup? or is everything public?

All the best with constructing the queries

what query language?
normal SQL....Microsoft?

8:08 PM
I think all chats are publicly viewable

sql

probably MYSQL, right?

It's some dialect of SQL. Makes my eyes hurt

@DucatiKiller - Stupid question, but you are aware of the privileges page?

@yes looks like I"m a big kid now

8:10 PM
Yes you are ;-)
So, off topic of the site ... what kind of stereo should I get for my truck?
I need a 2-din size.

What brands do you all like?
Any you don't like?

hmmm....thinking
Bose of course

@J.Musser can i haz the fieldz?

8:13 PM
I will argue that....but still thinking
and I'll tell you why Bose too...in sec

Constructing the query isn't that hard, but I'd like to know what stuff is selectable

I've been happy with factory Bose.. Can you get it aftermarket tho?

Something to remember is, when we become a full fledged graduated site (not the design independent graduation phase), the point requirements go up at that point. Users who now have just over 5k and have all of the privileges will lose a lot of those privileges when it comes down to it.

@Paulster2 aye, you'd be the only one with full privileges

Back to my question ... stereos anyone?

8:16 PM
@Paulster2, get a Blaupunkt just to mess with people trying to say the name.

@paulster2 Really, that's a bummer.

It happened to me over on Movies.SE
I was a little shocked because I had it ALL ... and now it's gone, lol

They should grandfather people in.

But, stereos ... what type of Blaupunkt, @JPhi1618

If you're that active on a beta site, you deserve it, right?

8:17 PM
I see wisdom in that, JPhi

Honestly, I haven't really looked at aftermarket stereos in 15 years or more.
I'd have to look at features more than brands.
Like Bluetooth, phone integration, etc.

@Paulster2 do you think it would be a good idea to award bounties on existing answers to help accelerate the development of the "middle class"? I ask you since your reputation is like 5 of us rolled into one :)

Come on guys - now you're just actively avoiding the stereo question :)

So the real question is actually a statement: "Paul, go award some bounties ... NOW!"
haha

Hey, I wouldn't mind doing the same myself
Just that you wield a lot more power in that department

8:21 PM
Like the bounty I offered on the stereo question of mine. I already know what I need. I had already found it on Crutchfield which "race fever" stated in the comments, but he won't pull the trigger and actually answer the question.
Drives me nuts ...

You do know that existing questions and answers can also be awarded bounties in retrospect, right?

I'd have no issue offering some bounties on questions ... and I do know about retroactively awarding bounties.
I just think we'd have to offer a LOT of bounty points for it to make any difference.

I wish we could get an answer like this one

A: Why is processing a sorted array faster than an unsorted array?

MysticialYou are a victim of branch prediction fail. What is Branch Prediction? Consider a railroad junction: Image by Mecanismo, via Wikimedia Commons. Used under the CC-By-SA 3.0 license. Now for the sake of argument, suppose this is back in the 1800s - before long distance or radio communication...

Q: What is needed to put a stereo into a Silverado?

Paulster2I'm probably going to get a stereo head unit for my truck for my upcoming birthday. I'm wondering what I need to do to get it hooked up. My truck has steering wheel controls and the Bose speaker system. I want to retain full functionality of both. My understanding is I'll need separate items to g...

It even has a bounty.

I missed that one... Brb, gonna flag as a shopping question.

@JPhi1618 hahahaha!

@Zaid - As for the "branch prediction fail" ... I wish we could get voting on our questions like that one, lol!

@Paulster2 Aye, maybe some day...

8:27 PM
So, I know with my old '99 Jetta with a Bose HU - you couldn't use the speakers with any other head unit because of the impedance mismatch.

Not all of our answers are that good (but neither are all the answers of that caliber on SO, either).

Q: Socket wrench turns loose on top of spark plug

gabrieldiegoI'm trying to replace the spark plugs of my 2006 Prius, but the deep well 5/8 socket attached to a 2 in extender just turns loose, as if it does not fit in the top of the spark plug. This one's interesting... how would you solve it?
I should ask if he's using a proper spark plug socket

I'm wondering if the rubber insert is keeping it from going down on top of the spark plug?

Trevor DI've heard much and recently watched a video about performing the heel-and-toe technique. Here are my pedals--is the gas pedal sufficient len...

I'm thinking it's more about the pedals rather than driving style
it's not shopping assistance either, he didn't ask for a source of pedals
he simply asked if his gas pedal was too long to use for toe and heal driving
@JonEricson Howdy. Happy New Years!

The pedals which you posted up in the answer are overkill ... while the pedals are quite a ways away from each other, it's about driving technique. If you are going to heal-toe it, you need to be flexible in your foot placement.
And I do mean flexible, lol.
Contortionist in fact.
Off to look at more stereos
:D

@Paulster2 Not if he have the right pedals. My point is that the question is about the pedals more than the driving style. The driving style in ancillary and he's not asking how to do it.

Fair enough. I will retract, if you like.

8:51 PM
Hopefully @racefever will show up over here ... I just invited him to come over from the main site.

yes, his answers and getting better and better

They are.

He played with formatting the other day
fred wilson too.....he went up a level in quality

OOOOOOO ... I don't even go there.

FW or formatting?

8:54 PM
On the socket question... I've had deep sockets where the "deep" part was only big enough for a typical bolt, but not big enough for a plug.

me too
need just a bit longer

I thought the "does it fit the new plugs" comment might be a little condescending, but whatever.

well, it is what it is
I was on a helpdesk 20 years ago and have asked questions like, "is it plugged it?"

@DucatiKiller - Formatting </sarcasm>

"did you try putting the CDRom INTO the tray...
@Paulster2 :)

8:57 PM
The stupid thing is, you have to ask questions like that. Don't assume things.

they were condescending but that wasn't the intent....not my intent...it was legit so...

Right.

@Paulster2 exactly

We have this installer that only works with Internet Explorer, and the instructions say "Use Internet Explorer", but eveyone always knows better and tries Chrome, FF, whatever.

@JPhi1618 of course they do.

8:58 PM
So we have to be like, "Did you use IE? You're sure you used IE? What color was the icon?"
And this is us asking other developers!

It's almost human nature for some to be perpetually oppositional. The thing is, most of them have no idea their doing it.
