@J.Musser - You should be able to get them while the tank is still on ... just change one at a time. Obviously the bad one first. Straps usually have a lot of play in them, meaning there is a fairly long bolt associated with the strap. Get it into position and draw up the tank.
@J.Musser - I guess I should really ask which vehicle you are talking about. With the truck, you should have more than enough clearance to get under there and get it changed. If it's a car, you'll need to jack it up and put it on stands.
I changed out the pump twice on my Camaro without a lift.
The first fuel pump went bad after about three starts, so got a replacement for free.
What's worse is taking out the tank when it's about 1/2 full of gas ... holy crud is gas heavy.

@Paulster2 yeh my truck
I'm not to great at squeezing under there as my driveway isn't paved, and I have no garage

You can use a floor jack with wood between it and the tank ... and suck it up. You don't need a "chariot of fire" with that tank hanging down :D
Either that or pay someone to put the new straps on.
Put some cardboard on the ground. It's a great insulator.
and will help with the rocks as well.

ha true

Ask me how I know.
;-)

lol

12:44 AM
Been there ... done that.

Trucks are so much easier to get into
especually mine

ROFL! True that.

it's really a lightweight 360

I finished putting the Accel Supercoils on my truck tonight.

More than some
lots of room under the hood

12:45 AM
Yah, you can climb into the engine bay on those.
I think you've seen the pics of my exploits, lol.

yeh
My friends subaru legacy from 2013 has... no room
My truck has a little over 1 ton of mulch in the bed atm
Looks like I should think about doing the suspension/shocks

You could always just use some duct tape to put the tank in place ;-)
Or bailing wire ... you just need it to stay in place :D

1:00 AM
nope
lol nice thought tho

Bubble gum?

I'd have to clean the dust out first, and I don't feel like it

haha

I did consider wiring it up temporarily
If there comes a time that I never seem to show up here at SE, assume my truck somehow did me in

If I see a large explosion from the north, I'll just assume it was you.

1:02 AM
yeah there you go
I'll blow up in my truck and people will go "What's that pot-hole doing there?
jk

haha, I hope not

lol

@Zaid - You can learn something from this ...

1:31 AM
@Paulster2 : Yes I've actually watched it already. His claim seems quite controversial at first but by the end of it I kinda get where he's coming from. Except for the fact that heat isn't everything ;)
Because aerodynamics

1:56 AM
@Zaid - I think he might have said that, but what he's getting at is heat control is everything. Aerodynamics definitely plays a part, but climbing Pikes Peak is going to have less to do with aerodynamics because there is less air ;-) I like the series.

My exhaust sounds wimpy
I wanna make it noisier
Idk where it is on this rn

2:28 AM
@Paulster2 I don't disagree with what he says about heat management, especially the comment about "how much power and for how long"

3 hours later…

A: How would a bad barometric reading affect gas mileage?

ZaidIf the location shown in your profile is accurate, ambient pressure should be around 29.7 in Hg, so your neighbor's car seems to reflect the correct altitude. As @barbecue mentions, Wolfram|Alpha shows that 29.2 in Hg reflects an altitude of 205 m (674 ft) above sea level. If you compare the ai...

^@Paulster2, that took quite some time to figure out
But I think it altered EGR operation explains it

5 hours later…
10:18 AM
@Zaid - I like your answer. It seems a bit more authoritative than does barbecue's or Fred's answers.
@Zaid - I didn't know whether cleaning the MAF would have any affect on it either. You have to do the "cheap and easy" things first.
Since the MAF does a lot for the fuel trims, it makes sense to try and clean it.

10:30 AM
@Paulster2 but do you agree that even if fuel trims were to be affected the delta is very minor: 1.6%
It wouldn't explain the loss of fuel economy

@Zaid - While you put that the measure is only 1.6% difference, you need to look at what the difference using a scale of what is a high baro reading compared to a low baro reading ... somewhere between 29.2 low and 30.06 high ... (guesstaments)
If using that, the .6 is a HUGE difference.

Didn't get you, sorry
The 1.6% is difference in density, which will affect the mass flow. You wouldn't look at pressure differences and relate that to fuel trims.

10:47 AM
If the total difference the barometric pressure could be is only a difference of (just throwing a number out here) 2.5 in/hg, 0.6 of that would be well over 20% of the total.
@Zaid - This site is saying baro pressures rarely go above 31 nor below 29. That's only a 2" difference. I haven't dug that deep into it, but would have to assume whatever factors are involved on a fuel map which corresponds to the baro would have to be in that range and not going from zero or some other arbitrary number.
.6" difference in read versus actual may have a distinct difference is what I'm getting at.

11:06 AM
@Paulster2 and my point is that the car needs to know barometric pressure to figure out what the air density is. There is no other reason for the car to know what the barometric pressure is. 0.6 inHg difference corresponds to just 1.6% change in air density, which is well within the capability of any fuel trim compensation.

You still aren't getting my point @Zaid (and maybe my point is obtuse and not relevant?).
The map will only adjust for 2 in/hg ... in the scheme of things .6 in/hg is large in comparison.

I think you're trying to say that 0.6" out of 2" is relatively big
And I'm saying that the compensation is based on density, not pressure
*altitude compensation
In terms of density the change isn't that great
And it wouldn't explain the change you're seeing in fuel economy because your car has lambda control

Fair enough ... I'm being too obtuse, lol.

@Paulster2 I get where you're coming from. Just remember that physics works best with absolute quantities. That's why the gas equations use Kelvin and Rankine instead of °C and °F
@Paulster2 But you put out a real curveball of a problem, that's for sure :)

Even so, the fuel maps would never start at 0°K because a vehicle would never see that temperature.

11:21 AM
So here is air density at 29.2 in Hg : wolframalpha.com/share/…
1.175 kg/m³
And air density at 29.8 in Hg : wolframalpha.com/share/…
1.199 kg/m³
The percentage difference between the two densities is 2%

You are as stuck on that as I am on my point.

EFI will take care of this small difference in mass flow. You wouldn't be running rich or lean because of inadequate fuel trims

And you are looking at the problem from the wrong direction.

So I wouldn't expect to see poor fuel economy because of this reason
@Paulster2 why do you say that?

How much will a car adjust for totally in in/hg? Just throw a number out there. It's not going to adjust for 29", right?

11:26 AM
Because?

It will have a table which will tell it if the baro is @ xx in/hg, apply this much difference in offset to adjust for it ... sound reasonable?

Yes

The table will not run from 0 in/hg to 100 in/hg, because those are unrealistic numbers for which to do calculations from. The table will only go from, say, 28 to 32 in/hg.

True

28 to 32 is only 4 in/hg. Small variances are going to have a larger affect on the whole due to this.
While .6 in/hg is not a large difference in altitude, if the MAP was reading this wrong and the car thought it was at 1000' instead of actually being at sea level, it could make a difference.
2% difference in densities actual could mean 20% difference on the scale.
Again, I'm just throwing numbers around to (hopefully) make my point.
I'm not a fuel/air guy. I'm only a novice at it, so I could be totally off base.

11:34 AM
I see your concern. Can you see that we are using pressure to determine density? So the 20% becomes 2%

No ... cannot see that at all.
;-)

OK :)

Didn't you know I'm blind? (Well, at least I feel that way without my glasses on.)
haha, not blind.
Did I tell you I got my new coils on my truck finally?

Yeah I scrolled up and read that
I'll just mention why EFI needs to know density and call it quits :)

Please do ... (you noticed I was changing the subject, I take it?)
I will say your answer is as close to an expected answer as I was hoping for out of the three which are on there.
I guess I should check the IAT to ensure it is reading actual ... I forgot to see what would be ... that should be easy enough without the car running.

11:43 AM
Of course, that didn't escape my attention ;)

So here goes. The IC engine is a volumetric device, but lambda control of AFR is by mass. To convert between mass flow and volumetric flow, you have to know what is the density.

In the case that a car uses MAF, it knows what the mass flow is directly from the sensor and there is nothing to discuss in this case.

If the car uses MAP for lambda control, it doesn't know what the mass flow rate is. The ECU can estimate volumetric flow based on VE, load and RPM, but the MAP helps determine density by giving an idea about the pressure of the incomin
My point was that your car is (most likely) using MAF for lambda control anyway, so the whole discussion about the incorrect barometric pressure affecting fuel trims is moot.
And even if it is using the MAP sensor for lambda control, the differences are teensy
So the fuel economy is getting affected by something other than lambda control
Possibly EGR
Which is getting affected by wrong readings from the MAP

Very good and understood. Let me ask this: The MAP gives two readings - 1) baro & 2) intake pressure (or vacuum) ... is that right?
Or outside of the engine and inside of the engine pressures.

Yes

I'm wondering if the baro reading is wrong if the intake reading is wrong as well, which might have an affect as well. Since the car uses a MAF, I'm betting I'm barking up the wrong tree in either case.

Isn't that what I said in my answer?

•Stating the obvious, there is no dedicated barometric pressure sensor. The MAP sensor is used to determine barometric pressure. So if the barometric pressure reading is off, I have to question the integrity of the MAP sensor.
I think the MAP is faulty
Which is causing the EGR valve solenoid to not command the right position at the right time

What really bothers me about the MPG of this car is that the "sticker" stated the fuel mileage should be ~21 (IIRC) ... I was just looking for it. Anyway, Nearly 4mpg difference is bothering me pretty badly
Yes, you stated that in your answer.

11:54 AM
Is that at sea level?
21 mpg?

I would assume so ... remember ... I'm just above sea level.
85'?

I really have no clue regarding fuel economy at different altitudes

I don't either, lol. The car should adjust for it ... when you get to 10k+ I think it really becomes an issue, but below that, I think the car can fend for itself (as long as all of the silly little sensors are working correct, lol)

much lower fuel consumption at high altitudes

I know ... I need to give it a SeaFoam treatment!! That'll solve everything
@RoryAlsop - And much less power output as well, eh?

11:57 AM
(rolls eyes)

@RoryAlsop - GM, kind sir!

2 reasons: aerodynamic drag is lower, and lower throttle friction/drag
but yes, lower power as well

@Paulster2 Slap on a K&N filter :D

@Zaid - YES YES YES YES YES!!!
That'll do it :D

11:58 AM
The stickers alone are worth 5 hp each :)

for aircraft it is a little different - you can get higher power output as well (for jet or turbofan aircraft, anyway)

@RoryAlsop - I'll have to leave that article for sometime when I want to do some light reading.
@RoryAlsop - Yah, you have to have forced induction for better efficiency, right? (at least in piston driven situations).
I believe they discovered this during WWII

@Paulster2 It's to do with the intake setup if I'm not mistaken (ram jet)

On a completely different subject, I want to do a complete backup of my 250GB SSD on to a 1TB spinning disk ... what's the best way to go about it. Auto backups with incrementals would be pretty kewl.
Does Windows have an auto feature for this?

Anyhow gents, I have to run. Have a nice day!

12:03 PM
@Zaid - just when I ask the hard question .... later bro!

@Paulster2 dunno - I use rsync

rsync ... I'll take a look.
@RoryAlsop - Because you're a Linux hero ... ARGH!
:D

@Paulster2 sorry - yeah, 20 years of my life were Unix based. I struggle with WIndows

I am fond of UNIX as well. I spent about glorious years of my life as a SysAd on UNIX systems (DECAlpha, SGI, Sun)
But that ended about 8 years ago, so most of that knowledge has gone by the way side.

@Paulster2 Similar - not really much Dec/Vax stuff, but a fair amount of Sun and loads of Sgi
WOnder if I could build an sgi disk from scratch now... probably not

12:13 PM
Haha ... I have a full set of IRIX OS disks sitting on my desk right now ... still sealed. I believe the version is 6.5.xx something, lol.
I have an SGI workstation and server in my basement which I haven't fired up for several years. The idea was to keep my UNIX skills good using these ... never happened.
I would have to use the disks to break into both of my machines ... no clue what the root passwords are, lol.
Then to do that, I'd have to remember how to use the disks to do that ... been a long time, lol.
init 6 ... right?
haha
Yup ... I love SGI machines ... at least the way they used to be. I mean, they were the powerhouse of the CGI revolution.

Think I could maybe recover my Octane and O2 - they were a bit easier at block level
If only they hadn't messed up at that windows/cray point in time - they seemed to devalue both ends

SGI just wanted the interfaces which Cray had, they could have cared less about the rest of the company. I forget what SGI called the interfaces after they integrated them
I did a paper on Samuel Cray way back when ... i was enamored with the company and how Cray did what he did to make his supercomputers
Which, I believe, is tame by today's standards.

@Paulster2 aye - remember working a lot with cc-numa stuff - mostly for CAVE visualisation rooms for oil companies (and games companies :-)

12:29 PM
You never cease to amaze me :D

@Paulster2 lol - one of the best jobs ever, that one: demo sgi kit to companies with millions to spend

Aye

So you'd do the techy demo, and it would get them interested, but the way to get the money out, was to demo Quake 2
On huge screens
in full 3D
heh

Shaweet.

Didn i hear quake 2?
that was thr first proper FPS i had played
my dad used to play something called wolfenstein

12:31 PM
@Anarach yeah - I'll see if I can find a pic of Quake 2 running at sgi's Reality Centre in Theale. 60 foot screen. The monsters were bloody terrifying!

I have heard of other people using the same types of methods to abscond with people's hard earned money.

I was small kid and quake 2 was horrifying to the core! especially when you had a flare gun for a weapon at the beginning

@Anarach that was fun - and the Doom, Rise of the Triad, Heretic and all the other spinoffs, before Quake, Unreal Tournament etc - leading on to things like Call of Duty these days

I had a job about 1.5 years ago where we had a large wall of monitors. The screen was 5x8 80" monitors ... with the video processor you could manipulate it pretty much any way you wanted. One large screen or multi screens ... lots of fun.

I still prefer old games, they were " FUN"
now its all reality and bullshitt
its a game
you dont want it to be ultra real
for example the thing i hate the most is life regeneration

12:33 PM
@Anarach well - if the gameplay is fun and you can have ultra real - I love it

i miss the old health bar , which did not regenerate

but even Doom - after a bit you forgot the blocky graphics and got sucked in

made game easy

Doom absolutely sucked you in.

My kids are playing Destiny at the moment, and some of the graphics are amazing - firing small black holes at you, which warp space around them - beautiful

12:35 PM
I have Destiny on the XBone ... I've really enjoyed playing TitanFall on my PC ... @Anarach would hate it because you can die quite often in that game.
Graphics and interaction are totally awesome in Titanfall
I was part of the Beta testing for Rainbow Six: Siege ... have to say I hated it.
Graphics were great, but the game play was uber slow.

@Paulster2 And I have been trying to play Elite:Dangerous sincle late Alpha/early Beta. I loved the original, but while the graphics on this are lovely, it doesn't grip me at all

Most FPS games pale in comparison to ones which play like Titanfall or Battlefield#
Have you looked at Evolve?
I haven't played it, but wanted to take a look?

@Paulster2 not yet - figured it might be too much of a time sink for me :-/

Make that "time suck"
yah, Titanfall is a huge time suck for me, lol.
Though my playing has slowed down over the past month.
I'm wondering what a Titanfall 2 is going to look like, lol
Lots of people are still playing the XBone version. We have it there as well. The wife plays it there. Usually there are over 1000 people on the server. On the PC version, it's usually down to about 100-300 depending on the time of day.
Anyway. I'm going to leave you alone so you won't say SE is a time suck for you, lol.

@Paulster2 I'm currently either PS4 or PC gamer (just rebuilt my gaming PC - it's now rather lovely - with two 4k monitors hanging off it)

12:44 PM
Oh, now you're just being silly.
My PC does pretty well. Wish I could play Titanfall at 4k, lol!
@RoryAlsop - Have a great day!!! :D

@Paulster2 one of the guys over on the DMZ really knows gaming specs so I gave him a budget and he came back with a lovely spec. This machine really is only used for games and music recording (I run Cubase on it) so I don't really need such a high spec, but I love it :-)
@Paulster2 you too!

I wish I had a budget to give someone for a gaming machine, lol. This one does quite well, even if I don't have large monitors 1-19" and 1-24" ... nothing larger than 1080p

Okay, you guys, it isn't fair to start discussing computer builds when I look away from the screen. :-p

GTX TITAN X anyone?

That's a lot of money - is it worth it?

12:54 PM
I'm on a GTX 980 Ti
it's pretty nice - can drive 3 of these 4k monitors
So - full spec of the gaming machine:
Intel i7-5930K 6-core
EVGA x-99 motherboard
32Gb RipJaw RAM
256Gb SSD (M2 slot)
4 Tb spinny drives
Antec 1200 V3 case (lovely - has 9 big fans)
Noctua NH-D14 cooling
Razer Death Adder Chroma and BlackWidow Chroma keyboard and mouse
2x 28" 4K ASUS monitors
Windows 10
I haven't yet found a game I can't run at top res and top quality

The 980 Ti is very good
@RoryAlsop no SSD?
Oh I spoke too soon

@Zaid Yeah - really nice. The worst thing about the spec is how DisplayPort cables work. If you disconnect one, the PC forgets about it, and won't necessarily enable it again when you turn that screen on again
so a bit of config-fudging was needed
@Zaid Yeah - a tiny chip. Sits under the graphics card - hadn't seen that before
literally 2 inches by 1 inch

Run your OS off the SSD. Data on the spinny drives
But you're probably doing that already

Yarr

Boo to spinny drives. I'm on a quest to get them out of the house. The prices continue to drop on SSDs to the point that I'm all "how much disk space do we really use?" For example, the 2TB "media" disk in this box currently has 1.58 TB free....

1:02 PM
I remember spec'ing out my own monster PC back in 2010. The only things I've had to change were the graphics card and buy an SSD
It's still going strong
I was so happy about having SATA 3.0 support
On a 5-year old motherboard

@BobCross Oh - I use up terabytes way too fast. One of my hobbies is photography, so I take a lot of photos - and it takes time to cull them. At the airshow the other month I took over 4000 pictures, at 18 megapixel...
SO I not only fill up terabytes too fast, I also have external drives
I do like SSD's but they just aren't big enough yet
Even my car stereo currently has a terabyte that's 3/4 full of music

@RoryAlsop Please try running Witcher 3
at max
at 60fos
fps

@Anarach ooh - haven't got that one. Is it worth buying?

Its epic
easily the best story driven game
the graphics are insane
its the crysis of 2015

I am planning to get Fallout 4 asap... just because I like the open landscape ones that I can dip in and out of
Actually, Portal 2 at full quality was interesting - because you move very fast it wasn't handling frame tear that well. Until I turned off vsync - now it's perfect

1:06 PM
yeah
that is an issue which bothers me
trun on adaptive v-sync
that will monitor the fps and turn on & off accordinly

@RoryAlsop what's the power supply?
That 980 Ti must be a monster
In terms of power consumption

@Zaid it's a 1200W beast
Actual power consumption is actually better than my last one except at full chat

Ouch. I guess you don't need a fireplace any more ;)

@Zaid it runs really cool most of the time

@Zaid It should generate heat only at full load

1:13 PM
I was exaggerating :)

and with this build i dont think anything less than witcher 3 can scratch it

One thing to watch out for
Just make sure the air flow is proper
I ended up frying my graphics card because the shop assistant plugged the "exhaust" fan the wrong way
After about 4 years it decided to quit on me

@RoryAlsop How much damage did it do to your pocket?

@Anarach couple of thousand
and another thou for the monitors
but it won't need replacing for a few years

1:17 PM
Lol, that's how I justified it all those years ago
Still running strong, though I don't use it for gaming

@Zaid to be honest - the big screens are ideal for running Cubase

1:44 PM
The other great thing about a solid build is that you can upgrade pieces. When the 899 GTX MAXORZ comes out in a few years, you can pull the 980 and throw it on the curb in disgust. ;-)

If you are a person who is afraid of the number, you'd probably think I'm doomed right now!!
Great thing about both of those number is, within 24 hours, I can make neither of them exist ... :D
~1.4m reached ... that seams wild.
or even "seems"
wild
@RoryAlsop - Proper air flow is a must ... if you got all the fans blowing into the case, that's bad. If you have all of the fans sucking air out of the case ... that's worse!!!

@BobCross or send it to my mate in Italy which is what I did with my GTx570 (590 - something like that) :-)
@Paulster2 Front fans in. CPU fans from front to back. PSU fan in and up. Top fan up
all the right way
As I have my keyboard on an underdesk tray, the case actually slightly cools my hands when typing
which is nice

lol ... I could think of so many wrong things to say with that last statement
I'm on the start of a 4-day weekend, so am enjoying a little downtime.
I need to get to the bank and cash a check, though.
The work never ends.
:D

@Paulster2 hahaha - it hasn't yet blown hot air
@Paulster2 today feels a bit like the weekend - I did only get to bed at 4:30 this morning after a gig and afterparty...
feeling a bit old today
@Paulster2 yup - the way of the world :-/

2:01 PM
@RoryAlsop - You? Old? You're kidding me right? I'd bet you aren't a day out of High School :P
Also, isn't it like 3pm there?
You had plenty of time to sleep ;-)
@RoryAlsop - And remember the old adage: "There'll be plenty of time to sleep when you're dead."
:D
@RoryAlsop - Laters.

@Paulster2 Aren't I older than you - or about the same...
Later - have a good weekend

2:19 PM
@RoryAlsop That's why you need the Kid Computer - that's where all the old parts go when they leave Daddy's computer. My younger son has the computer bug so I have him install all the parts. He's upgraded the graphics card with my old 470 and just installed a new power supply. :-)
Vacation continues apace at my house. Today's menu: diet coke, Sour Patch Kids and Sins of a Solar Empire. :-)

@BobCross Yup - Hamish has my old one
I've been giving away parts this week, as my attic is too full. video cards ranging from a Hercules to a 570
3 servers (just removed hard drives and showed the kids how much fun it is to disassemble them)
I have 6 old sound cards, from a Crystal (from an old 486) to an Audigy Platinum
RAM ranging from 256Mb sticks, to 1Gb SGI DIMMs
And so many monitors and keyboards, PS2 mice

My son is currently fascinated with my old TRS 80. So I win the old man war. :-)

@BobCross nice!
My eldest just showed me how to set up Steam family...so he can play all my games

@RoryAlsop Yeah, still not okay with that. I'm only controlling dad about a few things and, no, a fifteen year old boy doesn't need to play Saints Row 4 that I got in one of the Humble Bundles last year.

@BobCross yeah - you can restrict them, apparently.
The way I am doing it is by letting him know that I see all the logs - and he's in trouble if he does try it...

2:29 PM
Both boys have their own Steam accounts and their own games. It makes for super easy gift giving, too. Late at night on Xmas Eve... Oh crap! I forgot to get him a thing!
We did something similar with OpenDNS in our house. The sales pitch was "if I see anything inappropriate in these logs, we're going to have a super embarrassing conversation." ;-)

@BobCross yep - I think it's better than trying to restrict them technically
gives a chance for conversation rather than them trying to break your access controls

Well, we did have that conversation a couple of times and we agreed that it would be best if I blocked that Minecraft forum where people were a little too salty and had inappropriate avatars. That sort of thing. Motivation by embarrassment: it works wonders on teenage boys.

2:53 PM
Hmm, Conversation about offsprings is where i cannot give my 2cent
:-)
My father is a programmer for the Air Force. ALL WAYS top secret stuff, no matter what you ask him half of it is classified
and probably after 5 years he will explain what he did that day
one time it tool 15 years about some jamming pods which he recently explained to me how they worked , i asked him about this when i was 10

3:13 PM
@RoryAlsop - Yes, I think we are actually about the same age ... I was just playing with you ;-)
Old man.

1 hour later…
I like those - have saved them :-)

:0
:-)

2 hours later…
6:45 PM
@BobCross Thoughts on the EJ25x?

7:18 PM
@Simon Not much from me - mine is only a two liter. It has nearly 170K miles on it so I like it a lot.
Actually, I take that back - the 2002 Forester has an EJ251. Boring.

@BobCross From my experience, the EJ25 in general has an awful reliability, even the aspired ones. The 2L is where it's at reliability-wise.

@BobCross lol - I'm really not sure what my Forester has. Well, I know it's a 2.5l STi engine, made in 2006, but I don't know how to identify what range that is, as it's a bit non-standard

And yet they still produce STIs with the 2.5, sigh.
At least the USDM models.
