The ultimate answer is "yes". You can paint it lime green with purple polka dots if you really wanted to. If you want to do it right and make it look good, you'll need to:
Pull the engine/transmission and separate them.
Clean the heck out of the entire assembly.

@Paulster2 funny thing - the 2001 Subaru has the 3rd gear just below the D gear and it is extermly easy to switch to the 3rd and think I am driving on the over drive gear. As a result the engine heats up... The issue is the ease of accidently switching to D, and then the LED on the panel is so dim that i barely can see it... I havent had the issue since I double check each time I start my drive
