12:01 AM
fan-hat-ic incoming

12:11 AM
Thank you to all who helped in my quest for the secret hat (I got the +5 and -5).

PS I'm in second now (WOW)

I saw
You still have the vote hat that I should get today
and I'm getting El Dorado today

I know, you are going to have all of them!
Just because I don't except to stay up that high on the board for long.

@David You little weasel . . .

12:16 AM
@HATMAN LOL
on the plus side BSE is very well represented on the leader board.
me, @HATMAN, and @Gwenn are all up there.

how long is your screen

yes
@Quill-HATMANIAC lol

all from a site with just 900 hats!

IKR?

@Quill-HATMANIAC it is called "Full page screenshot"
built in to FF

12:22 AM
ah

why does chrome not have that, wtf

because Firefox is soooooooo much better! :)

@Quill-HATMANIAC yes

12:48 AM
@David Actually, I had already gotten Amazing Grace only a little bit before that.

1:19 AM
I need two DVs on this question to get Sun Wukong. Anybody have a vote to spare?

If you have to beg for downvotes, you're doing it wrong.
Also, note to self: next year try out a "send actual cash money from your country of residence directly to Pops" as a hat trigger; there's evidence that at least a few people are probably fanatical enough to do this.

@Pops You know, I could always knit you a couple of dishcloths instead of a hat. It sort of goes along with the cleanup theme at least.
And those are even easier than hats.

I could use one hundred trillion dollars. (NB: I couldn't, really. That was just a joke. And to be technical about it, nobody could. I'm pretty sure those notes are no longer legal tender, due to redenomination. And even if they are, they're kinda worthless.)

1:42 AM
@Pops :O We could repay all the US debt!
@KitZ.Fox I hear crocheting hats is even easier.

Not with Zimbabwe dollars

but I wouldn't know for sure.
@HATMAN jokes aren't supposed to make sense.

@Seth I got that one

@Seth Crocheting is easier for some. I haven't as much practice with it.

@Pops sorry not even me

1:45 AM
@Quill-HATMANIAC wow, then the market would be slim.

yeah, you can take the title of Hat Maniac next year then

:) no thanks, I'll stick with "David"

@Pops - what's your mailing address... I owe you for more than just hats ;-)
@Pops Also, for what it's worth, those notes are not valid - not because of the removal of the currency as a whole, but because they are "agro-checks" - they have a printed-on-the-face expiry date. When the country prints it's notes with a best-before date, you know you have problems.

@Seth Hmm. The pictured bill was printed in 2008. Depending on the month of issue, it would be worth either 100 current Zimbabwean dollars or one one-millionth of one current Zimbabwean cent. According to Google, the current USD-ZWD exchange rate is 1:0.00276, so that works out to either 2.76 US cents or... a value so small its only purpose is to be "not literally nothing."

Your math is out .... it's 0.276 cents, not 2.76 ;-)

1:51 AM
usually I'm the one too serious for jokes..
this role reversal is alarming!

@rolfl 2.76, that is the latest version of blender. :)

@rolfl Huh. I hadn't seen that one. The one I saw didn't say "agro-cheque" on it. Wikipedia's info is that they wanted to eliminate the Zimbabwean dollar and switch to using the US dollar as their official currency as of September of this year, but nobody's updated the entry to say if that actually happened.
@rolfl Dangit! You're right of course.

It did happen.... I happen to be somewhat familiar with the situation, with a number of friends there. There was a time when the black-market was more accurate, and trust-worthy than the banking system.
The black market folk would "bundle" notes in to wads, and cellophane wrap them. That was the unit-of-currency. Nobody would bother to count the notes, just the wads.
You would give a wad of money to the taxi driver to get you to work.... but he would accept a few eggs instead.

Sounds like what I'm hearing about Venezuela today.

Most transactions were done in the currency of other contries, mostly South African rands, and US dollars. For the past 4 years or so, either currency was accepted. Now they are "officially" settling on the US dollar only.
When the government post office refused to accept local currency for buying stamps, but would accept US$ or SArands, it was pretty much certain that the local currency was out.
Right, back to hats.

1:57 AM
:)

@Hosch250, do you have the SEDE query for Marshal?

I enjoyed your little talk, was informative.
@Quill-HATMANIAC looking to get a gold?

Maybe.

@rolfl I have all the rabid raccoons and boxes of cow dung (mildly NSFW) I need, thanks. Would accept some more puns though.

I might be able to help with that.

1:58 AM
484/500 comments flagged

@Pops I like that. I wonder if I can send one to my boss .... anonymously.
(definitely NSFW when you do that!)

I've still got to send glitter to my former teachers

Unrelated: I'm kinda sad that you're not wearing a Sun Wukong, @rolfl. Was (partially) thinking of you when I created it.

I find it really hard to get 5 downvotes ;-)

I found it really easy on SO
try your luck there

2:04 AM
Actually, @Pops - I walked away from Code Review - took a break, and have been catching up on real life. I thought winterbash may get me hooked again, but... instea I have been learning a new language
I still maintain my daily presence ..... 780+ days and counting.... never missed a day.
Also, I thought for sure I would make the archimedes hat, but apparently not.

WB is not over yet

Plenty of bathtubs left in the warehouse.
What language are you learning?

still nearly 2 week left.

go.

@Pops really? for what hats?

@Quill-HATMANIAC GO EARN HATS! Winter Bash won't end for 11 days, 21 hours, 53 minutes, and 55 seconds. :D

I know for a fact that the current edward-hat award was "borken" - I improved the description, but it's probably not right yet.

Edward Edwards is one that nobody's gotten quite right yet. A few have gotten pretty close.

@Pops am I in the pretty close group?

I honestly don't remember who's guessed what anymore.

2:08 AM
like we could forget!

Cleanup Crew and Onion Knight remain outstanding as well.

@Pops I'm pretty sure that's how I ended up with a bathtub.

Flying Tiger, too.

guesses are really just messes of content in comments, and chat rooms and emails

And 5 O'Clock.

2:08 AM
@Pops then I'll send a guess for 5 o clock now.

Huh, I think I have it.....

Actually no, people updated the meta post with the correct 5 O'Clock, so that one's out, sorry.

check the revisions

@Pops aw, but I was just about to send...

2:11 AM
@Pops does it really have to be a question for 5 o clock?

@David Well if you don't know that then definitely no bathtub for you.
3

Meh, can't tell for sure about edward.
Back to Go.

I got my first bounty today, and proved everyone who said it was for receiving their first bounty wrong.

@Hosch250 I did the same thing yesterday

@Pops I was convinced that it was a question, just I saw a user that looked to of gotten it for a suggested edit.

2:13 AM
Ah.

I got it, and was certainly not my first boutny received.

@Hosch250 yah, there is more to that hat

@rolfl Did you test my theory?

so @Pops there is not point in sending my 5 o clock guess?

@KitZ.Fox The other example on Stack Overflow was deleted, could not confirm.

2:16 AM
Hrm. No one else has it?

meta.stackexchange.com/a/271652/278094 out of all the people with the onion, he lists the users from BSE.

Not eeasy to tell, as far as I can see, @KitZ.Fox - Also, this person has it, on SO: stackoverflow.com/users/2403741/rp-beltran?tab=bounties

@David She.

@David huh

@David You can send it for brownie points, but no Archimedes for it.

2:18 AM
Good theory though. Goes along with the hint.

Yeah.

@Pops brownie points?

I like brownies

NVM, being silly.

@rolfl Both bounties were awarded to the lowest voted answer.

2:21 AM
Yes, the lowest voted, but the question is also about when the answers were posted.

Is it?

Do the other answers have to be pre-bounty, or are they post-bounty?

The other bounty had only one post-bounty answer.

@rolfl I've seen both

@David Otherwise meaningless points that will make people like you slightly more? (Which could also describe all Stack Exchange points....)

2:22 AM
(now that we are working together)
@Pops hmm, sounds good enough to sent an email. :)

@KitZ.Fox I suggest you find a way to write that up in the answer, in a way that make sense ;-)

@David Maybe Pops means negative brownie points.

Don't feel obliged to wait for me .... it will likely be a long wait.

He didn't say what the sign was.
Or maybe, it was positive, but it overflowed into negative.

@rolfl No, I already have a bathtub. I don't want to hog. I was just trying to help you out.

2:24 AM
Hmmm, yiou have the tub already.

I awarded two bounties this bash, and one was tied for the lowest score -- no hat. Let me check the other.
The other was the only non-deleted answer, so no hat there either.

@Hosch250 that is ok, I still would be the only one with "brownie points" :) (plus I'm really hoping to see an email from pops that does not say "Sorry, this guess does not qualify for Archimedes.")

So what IS the 5 0'clock hat for then?

@rolfl if you are willing, I'll share what I know (and who has the edwards hat)

@Pops You should set up your email to send that out every time.

2:27 AM
@HATMAN exactly what I just sent to pops "It’s Always 5 O’Clock Somewhere is awarded to users that ask a question on any Friday during the bash when it is between 5:01:00 and 5:01:59 PM anywhere in the world."
@Hosch250 it nearly does

Statistically, you will be right about 99% of the time, and the other one percent you can send a correctional reply out later.

@HATMAN The "What Are You Still Doing Here?" is what made the :01 make sense.

Ah

I am going for broke, @David - I updated the answer (again): meta.stackexchange.com/posts/270995/revisions

@rolfl dont think so either.
(I know of a user that was the highest voted)
@rolfl you are catching up, it took most everybody a week to figure out that is actually was not your first.

2:33 AM
yeah, I am way behind the times..... and should just back away,.
Actually, it's probably much simpler .... the bounty has to be awarded to the "newest" answer.

@rolfl Oh that first guy had +2 and there was one that was just 0. So maybe positive vote count? Or total votes (I can't see the split)?

no, keep at it. I've come quite close on now three hats, just to have them snatched away.

@rolfl I think the 0 vote was the newest.

@rolfl nope

@rolfl Nope.
Mine was the newest.

2:36 AM
okay, time to double down on the edwards hat (you should see that file I had on the 9000 hat :( )

Too many numbers.

@David You deserve it just for that work.

that is what I did, and nearly had it, then @Quill-HATMANIAC nabbed it, with bruit force.

You can add mine to that list too.

@David no, not brute force. I looked at the data logically

2:39 AM
@rolfl no, no that is my file on 9000, edwards is different

Those two travel.se entries

Ahh, gotcha.

they were at 3500 each when I looked at the respective Qs

@Quill-HATMANIAC yep, the 3500 views is what tripped me up.

Right. I should probably post some more questions.

2:39 AM
You can add my CR question to the NOT section.

@Hosch250 will do

I should probably move on. I am not going to make a run for winning, so there's not much point in chasing rare hats to deny someone else.

But. Hats.
There's more to hats than winning.

I cant win either (gold is very unlikely now) but I still want the rarest hat now.

Heh, @KitZ.Fox - I tied-first last year... I know the feeling.

2:41 AM
I want the gold too, but I'm nowhere close to a gold badge.

@David I have a query you can use to flag comments on Code Review ... the mods there probably won't freak out too much ;-)

Oh. I got my gold one today.
You know there's one every year. You got to set yourself up for it.

@rolfl true, but I was only thinking on blender.

I sort of did, I am 40-flags from marshal.... but I could also probably score gold on an answer for the license-change on meta.se

@KitZ.Fox I DID, but now learned that mods CAN"T GET some badges!

2:43 AM
I've only been around for three years. The first time I hated hats until halfway through. Last year I only took the easy ones. This year I took the lead by accident, and now I'd like to stay there.

@David Yeah, that is a bummer.

@rolfl I'm only counting CR hats. The only one I didn't get on CR was Odinson - the gold dupe-hammer hat.

@KitZ.Fox very big bummer!

I can't earn Odinson, if that makes you feel better.

@David Can you not get the flag gold badge?

2:44 AM
@Hosch250 me too, and hair boat, and grace.

@Gwenn Mods cannot earn those badges.

@Gwenn right :(

I got Hair boat and Grace on CR.

I actually worked quite hard for hair-boat on CR.... ;-)

I had to pimp kind of hard for Grace, but I don't feel bad because I got a Shog9 answer and the bug fixed.
@rolfl I just posted a late "Welcome to CR" comment.

2:50 AM
Did I just see 8 chat flags? o_O?

Oh! I missed it. Where were they?

Oh. Maths. rolls eyes

@David You could try for Publicist...

2:52 AM
It appears Sam lost his temper. At least, most of the flags were on the other guy's post.

It's a weird feeling to see your name roll up on the "Thank You" sede searches :-)

I don't remember if any were on his, but I don't think so.

One more hat down

3:27 AM
wow
You is ahead

I need to get busy . . . or not
I'm not quite as into it

@Quill-HATMANIAC Archimedes = earn a gold badge?

no

Archimedes = Solve the requirements for a secret hat

3:30 AM
Ah, El Dorado.

yep

Hey @cornbread.

omg. I was going to send you a t-shirt.
I never sent it to you.

!_!
Did you find it?

3:33 AM
I did!
But also, you might want to tell your story here: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/271359/…

@KitZ.Fox Geezis.
I made an SO logo with perler beads once.

I remember!

:D
Are you ready for Christmas?

Kinda.
I start vacation tomorrow.
Here's my swag story:

@Gwenn :) yep. that is my last shot. and I have a plan.

Have an upvote.

@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Thanks! Did you like the story?

some very interesting stories

if any of you have a BSE account, would you mind sending a few UV too this question?

Q: What is the warp modifier for?

DavidWhat is the warp modifier for, and how is it used? Even when I fill in the From and To fields, so that the modifier is not red, I still can not figure out what it is so post to do. When I set up the modifier just like is shown in the manual, it does nothing.

and then guess the hat I'm after

Um. Onion Knight?
You need a lot more votes for that.

3:53 AM
@KitZ.Fox nope

Oh. Good Question?

how do you get onion?

The working theory is that you need a question that has more votes than any other question you have posted this year.

@KitZ.Fox not directly

Although that is not confirmed.
OK. Time for bed. Good night!

3:56 AM
night @KitZ.Fox

@KitZ.Fox I could get that with one upvote.

@KitZ.Fox I would need 17 if that is true.

@KitZ.Fox Where did you get that from?

@Quill-HATMANIAC the meta, but where that is from, no idea.

4 hours later…
7:38 AM
@KitZ.Fox That can't be right. I only posted one question in MSE this year, and it took around 50 upvotes until I got the Onion Knight hat for it.

4 hours later…
11:30 AM
Even if this user was lazy I think this question is interesting: stackoverflow.com/questions/34429678/… reopen it please to give me a hat^^

2 hours later…
1:13 PM
@Eran Within the last year, looks like you posted two during last year's Winter Bash, and remember that the hat takes time to kick in.
Anyway, it's MariLou's theory, not mine. I thought it sounded plausible.

@KitZ.Fox based on that theory, would I get this hat in any site for which I didn't post any question in the last year? There must be some minimum threshold of upvotes or something. Perhaps it considers both answers and questions.

@Eran I think you would have to have least one question previously.
Which makes sense if it goes with this hint: It's important to know your history... in more ways than one.
Although I thought that was for Flying Tiger.

@KitZ.Fox What if I have old questions, but not within the past year?

I don't know. Does it fit the pattern?
We have a user on EL&U who got it.

btw that question still needs a reopen vote stackoverflow.com/questions/34429678/…

1:25 PM
@Eran Looks like he got it from posting his first question. So maybe it is just highest voted question period.
Yikes.

1 hour later…
2:50 PM
I have a theory for the Garbage hat.
Ere, Cleanup Crew.
I suspect the comments deleted must result in edits to the post first.
Maybe something like delete 10 comments that the OP edited their post.

3:03 PM
Not sure of the number, but that seems to be the key. If someone else wants to figure the rest out...

3:42 PM
I joined SO 4 months ago. I got the cleanup crew hat by deleting 50 random comments of mine.

3:57 PM
Did you count?
I'm fairly sure the key is that some action was taken from the comment.
I could test it out, however.
Really old isn't a problem, I'm sure of that.
There might be a minimum age, but that's hard to check...

2 hours later…
5:53 PM
I had a dream last night that you could get a fox ear hat by referring to hats as animate objects while using speech recognition to write a question.

6:52 PM
lol

I wish it were true. A fox ear hat would go so well with my avatar.

1 hour later…
8:26 PM
@Gwenn [insert suitable worried looking emoji here]

?

What would you make a fox ear hat with, exactly?

Cotton or wool?

So...not made with fox ears?

My avatar is a different canid. It would set a bad precedent. ;)

8:29 PM
I saw that you were a wolf.
I was worried you might want, you know, the real thing.

Now I know why it's been so weirdly quiet in here all day. Tense wolf-fox standoff.

We're from different families. It makes things, um. Different.

So, how about those felines, huh?

Hoo boy don't get me started on them.
:P

9:32 PM
> dec 20 at 14:12
That is when Pops posted a question on Travel to get Its 5:00 Somewhere.

? looks like Dec 18 at 23:01 to me.

@Hosch250 Dec 20 was Sunday, not Friday, so it can't have been that post.

Interesting question, thought-provoking answer.
@Hosch250 That's the re-open time, not the original time.

9:56 PM
This is the question I am currently researching. It's very interesting.

That is interesting.
