anyone have any ideas on keeping motivation up for fitness?

user11126
so far i have three points: tracking your progress, varying up your exercises/routine, and finding workout buddies or people to look up to

6:07 PM
@MattChan Buy a bicycle and sell your car so that you have to get some cardio to get anywhere
@MattChan Sign up for a fundraising event of some sort that's a bit beyond your current fitness level so that you have months of pure panic to motivate you...
(I've lost about 5 pounds (2kg) since signing up for that fundraising ride)

user11126
lol

@MattChan have your doctor tell you you're going to die from <insert ailment here> unless you exercise regularly

user11126
hm

@NathanWheeler That probably only works if it's a relatively near-term thing. "You're going to die in 30 years instead of 50 years unless you exercise regularly" is a recipe for putting off exercise for another decade

@freiheit good point

6:19 PM
I never actually had a car, but using a bicycle to get around does seem to have been enough to give me a decent base level of fitness

I'm riding my bike everywhere now that my car's broke... but my bike has a big motor in it so it's not really helping much

user11126
after having a car, you never want to take public transportation in boston again

@NathanWheeler Where I live, it's generally faster to get across town by bicycle than bus. And only faster to bus to the next town over (where I work) on the express.
The laziness of sleeping an extra 15 minutes in the morning outweighs the other laziness

ola activity in here :)
@MattChan gamifying it, literally, dance central or wii sports is much more motivating to some
participating in competitive sports, either because you want to win or because of peer pressure
use one of those pledge web apps, where you lose your money if you don't work out
have a goal, like a crazy match or running a marathon to work towards

@IvoFlipse I think you mean "Wii Fit"...
(Wii Sports is all waving the controller around in different ways. Wii Fit is the one with the balance board that tracks your weight and balance and tries to make you do cardio and yoga and whatnot)
I was thinking of trying to start actually tracking my weight, instead of the approximate "stand on the bathroom scale every week or so and remember my progress in my brain" thing, and suddenly realized "oh, hey, Wii Fit will log and graph that for me!"

Exergaming or exer-gaming (a portmanteau of "exercise" and "") is a term used for video games that are also a form of exercise. Exergaming relies on technology that tracks body movement or reaction. The genre has been credited with upending the stereotype of gaming as a sedentary activity, and promoting an active lifestyle. Exergames are seen as evolving from technology changes aimed at making videogames more fun. History The genre's roots can be found in games released in the late eighties, including the Power Pad (or Family Trainer), released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NE...

@freiheit yeah you're right, I don't own any Nintendo products, so you'll have to forgive me

Starting a new and exciting prospect always brings this feeling of exhilaration and wonder. Drumming up the nerve and getting that initial high is easy, but maintaining that interest afterwards is not. Fitness is no different, and working towards a healthy and active lifestyle is no easy feat. Breaking your New Year’s resolutions is only discouraging and wanes your motivation to pursue that choice.

If you’re falling out of your current fitness plan, then perhaps re-evaluating your fitness goals will help you get back on your feet. Setting small goals (while keeping the overall big p …
