Welcome to The Periodic Table @User! Here are our chat guidelines and it's recommended that you read them. If you want to turn Mathjax on, follow the instructions in this answer. Happy chatting!

@MAFIA36790 Natural human obligation to thank other people.
If they don't read an explicit "DON'T DO THIS", they'll do it.
Some of them would even continue after that.
And what's the best way to express your enthusiasm? Abusing MathJax.

Which of these transitions are possible for the electronic absorption of an atom or molecule?
A 1s electron in hydrogen is promoted to the 2p orbital
A 1s electron in hydrogen is promoted to the 3d orbital
A 2s electron in hydrogen is promoted to the 3d orbital
How do you know? What concept is this talking about?
Yes No No

user116211
Okay, what's the difference between \begin{align}....\end{align} and \begin{multiline}....\end{multiline}?

user116211
Do they provide different environments?

@MAFIA36790 Yes, do you expect MathJax to show the subtle differences?

user116211
hmm.

user116211
@TIPS Tell me more about that, please.

9:09 AM
Do you have a LaTeX implementation on your device?

user116211
I've used the former many times but didn't know about the latter...

user116211
@TIPS \o/

When it says delta L can be +- 1, does that mean it can't be 0?

@notorious I think they want to mean that excitation of electrons from the lower orbitals is pretty hard.

user116211
9:11 AM
@TIPS what? Shot me with heavier words; I'm at dead end ;/

@MAFIA36790 Do you have LaTeX on your device?

I found this and based my answers on it: inside.mines.edu/~fsarazin/phgn310/PDFs/AtomicLect1b.pdf

Other than Chem

user116211
@TIPS ohh... no.

Oh.
Then it's not necessary to know the differences.

user116211
9:12 AM
@TIPS ;_;

No really
What do you want to learn that in line two hundred and x of multiline, there's something that prevents the bug in align from happening?
@notorious Yes

user116211
@TIPS I got some nice TeX SE posts on that... reading

@MAFIA36790 On what?
Installing TeX?

user116211
@TIPS yep.

@MAFIA36790 If you have an internet and device that can hold 2–3 gigabytes without annoying you, I recommend, searching "TeXlive", downloading and then installing it.
Then install some IDE-ish thingy and you're good to go.

user116211
@TIPS They are telling about MiKTeX.... reading

@MAFIA36790 I don't like MiKTeX.
No difference in how it's gonna get your job done, but I don't want to install my packages on the go.
I want to have them available.
The good thing about TeXlive is it's in one piece.
Of course, I understand why some people'd choose MiKTeX.
I haven't downloaded any packages since TeXlive's update.

Q: What are the advantages of TeX Live over MiKTeX?

xportI have been using MiKTeX for a couple of years. I don't know whether it is "wise" to insist on using it. Could you give me a list of advantages of TeX Live over MiKTeX?

A: TeX Live and MiKTeX: underlying basic difference

norbertThe question is what you are talking about, I would say there are (at least) three different levels: the actual program code for the engines (pdftex, luatex, etc) the TeX, MetaFont, MetaPost, fonts, support files the infrastructure - update manager etc Concerning the first item, the program c...

user116211
> TeX Live defaults to installing everything, which means that if you want everything it's easier to use TeX Live than MiKTeX.

9:30 AM
@MAFIA36790 Yeah. Never worry about having to go download some obscure package from CTAN and installing it in places of your device you've never been before.

user116211
@TIPS noted

user116211
@TIPS It's a VAST archive!!

Yeah. What else did you expect?

user116211
@TIPS I expected vast' but not VAST ;/

Few megabytes packages (whose most data goes for the documentation pdf) making up some gigabytes.
@MAFIA36790 Versatile Anti-Stationery Tanks?

user116211
9:37 AM
@TIPS whatever.... but thanks; I didn't know about that.

Yes. Broadening the scope to organophosphorous compounds seems like a good idea. — bon 13 hours ago
@Mart it seems people agree with renaming it.
And since I'm one of those people, this rename WILL happen. ಠ_ಠ ᕙ(⇀‸↼‶)ᕗ

A: Why won't President Obama apologize for the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki?

RyathalOther than the fact that apologizing is political suicide there are a few good reasons. No country really ever apologizes for acts of war, they may be sorry for starting a war, but its very rare that anything specific is mentioned. The bombings really weren't that destructive compared to the co...

Really? Was radiation an unexpected side-effect?
If they didn't know about it, how did they build the bomb, even?

Best answer.
Of course in politics, the real answer is overlooked by most.
I don't understand these people. Why do they assume social merits have any value in politics?

Q: Really understanding oncotic pressure and osmosis

PazeI can't wrap my head around the idea of oncotic pressure and osmolarity, logically. I imagine a blood vessel. It is FILLED with proteins...Like a ton of proteins and solutes. So this means, according to oncotic pressure and osmolarity, that water will diffuse INTO this blood vessel. I can't und...
