@Hippalectryon I'm pretty sure it did not post any other question after that until I issued it again. After @PhMgBr issued it, @mafia tried it too, but it had no effect since he is not registered. Maybe something happened then.

@Martin-マーチン I'm not the room-owner... it shouldn't response to mine, isn't it?

How can we compare the stability of two molecules?

@manshu Many, many ways to do that.
The main way is to do some calculations with some data you have, but that's not what happens in exams.

qualitatively

Which molecules are we talking about, in which medium, in what temperature, and under what pressure?

"under what pressure"

\o/

5:01 PM
I am given 4 molecules... Cr2+, Cu+, MnO4(3-), MnO4(2-)

Are you aware that none of those are molecules?

No.
:p
What do we call them?
ions?

Yes.

So..they are in aqueous solution.
How can I compare?

OK, one simple rule
Charge concentration.

5:05 PM
Ohhh...

The less charge density you see on an ion, the more stable it is.
2

So..Cu+ is the answer...

So OH- is smaller than NO3- and it's less stable.
@manshu I dunno, I'd go for manganate

Does the half filled shell or full filled shell of the central atom have any affect?

@manshu There are many effects at play.
What I told you is a mere guideline that works most of the time.
For instance, nitrate is especially stable because of Y-aromaticity.

5:09 PM
what on earth does stability even mean
2

@orthocresol lol

@orthocresol Less reactivity in this context I believe.

@PhMgBr close as unclear what you're asking

Sure, I'm playing with prey.

@PhMgBr Y-aromaticity?

5:10 PM
OMG. :p

@CowperKettle Oh, that's one beautiful beautiful concept.

> However, this concept is controversial and some authors have stressed different effects

user116211
Damn, i was busy at the Session...

(Wiki)

Jan
Stability is the property of a building to not fall into pieces.

5:10 PM
For starters, delocalization has meant stability as far as I have seen.

Jan
This in turn means that the building I work in should be considered metastable at best.

I just recently read about a thingie with two oxygens being more stable due to the charge being spread among them.

@CowperKettle Thingie with two oxygens is very descriptive
Though I think you're talking about carboxylate.

@PhMgBr Some organic thingie. THeir names are so weird, I fail to remember them.

@PhMgBr Why did you go for Manganate?

5:12 PM
@PhMgBr Yep! Looks like it.

@manshu It's much larger than Cu+.
@CowperKettle Delocalization, again.

The article I read compared that carboxylat and a phenol ion.

Delocalization basically means electrons find more centers to wander around in, @Cowp.

@PhMgBr Yes, and it attacts wandering H(+) less.

@PhMgBr Ohhh...So when we talk about size, we talk about the size of the whole ion. Not just the central atom. Right?

5:14 PM
@manshu Yes.
Oh, @Brian sensei is here.

bows to sensei

@CowperKettle That's exactly what we're interpreting stability to mean here.
Think of it like this: Everything is colliding in that skirmish of a solution.

@PhMgBr Konnichi wa, @PhMgBr-san
Is it okay if I swap my community promotion ad image for a fancier version?

@Brian Yeah sure.

It's already made it into circulation -- still ok?

5:20 PM
Why wouldn't it be?

Jan
@Brian Remove IR, then ok ;)

@Jan Occh, @Jan, at it again with the IR thing!
@PhMgBr Dunno. But, I've learned from experience that often it's better to check on SE, since there are many rules/subtle things that don't occur to me.

Lemme rererecheck with Tavern.

He's very eager, but posts a lot of stuff that's (A) either borderline or fully out of SE style/content rules, and (B) terrifically hard to read.
(B) is the bigger problem at the moment, I'd argue

Jan
I really, really, really want to not be biased by prejudice in any way at all when confronting humans, but a large number of users with usernames that look Indian to me are making it very, very hard … =C

@Jan Same feeling here, I had for a long time
Oh wait
Your answers aren't bad, but the amount of bolding you use makes reading them cumbersome. Bold isn't another font you can use every second line, it's for highlighting the most important part of the messages in your answer. — PhMgBr 3 mins ago

He says in his profile that he hates chemistry, and yet he's posting with quite an authoritative tone.

@Brian Hell, I can't talk as confident as that about this site and I've been literally living here for a year and half.

Jan
@Loong You mean, [Ca(H2O)n]^2+, don't you?

a complex ion

Jan
Your former copper self should know them well ;)

I wonder whether complex ions really "hybridize" their orbitals when these orbitals are empty.
@Jan Yes, but I transitioned into Cowper, like transition metals are wont to do.

@Jan in effect, yes

Jan
6:12 PM
@CowperKettle Since hybridisation is a mathematical concept, the question is moot ;)

I see.. again that MO.

Jan
If anything, you may want to calculate excited states and take those orbitals.

nods

*Almost any function of x,y,z can be an unoccupied orbital*:
When calculating orbitals by using basis sets, there are typically
more orbitals generated as needed to construct a wave function
determinant. Most of the algorithms to solve MO equations
generate as many orbitals as there are basis functions. One says:
‘the calculation also yields ‘unoccupied’ orbitals’. There is
nothing special about these in the sense that any other function
orthogonal to the ‘occupied’ set is by definition an unoccupied
