o/ @inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M
whazzup?

Answered that meta thingy up there.

I saw it
I have to read Geoffs answer on my question to understand it better

Well, here's some smart code: !@#$%^&*

it looks like cursing signs, yes xD

7:34 AM
BTW, those cursing signs are called grawlix.

never heard, thx ... I think there is no german equivalent

It's a pretty recent thingy.
47 years old.

the english wiktionary told me about it

So I don't think it has equivalents in any language.

probably ^^

2 hours later…
9:29 AM
\o @Wild kitty!

=^.^=

How're you this aromatic day?

Aromatic? :O

No, I didn't mean smelly.

But what did you mean? :D

9:34 AM
Aromatic == stable == nice

:O
Unstable = Nice!

No.
Stable == nice!
Let's fight!

10:15 AM
stable means that you cannot make reactions with it ... that's not nice
or sometimes just need more brute force

That's nice!
If everything were stable I wouldn't be having to study this much.

ok stable means more than it's more or less easy to isolate it ... it can react

10:40 AM
hellow guyz ... @PH13@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M

@diffracteD o/

Are we playing ping-pong?

hmm.. see, you are upto on some kinda fight..

No, I already defeated @PH13.

oh, congrats...@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M

HAIL ME NOW.

What are three dollars supposed to do?

that's the money for table dance stuff

10:49 AM

@PH13 Look I made a picture of dancing @inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M

no I can imagine it better

That's actually like a pineapple.

@PH13 dft is going cool so far...
I'm currently trying to plot some data in 4D, obtained from my calculations...
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M well, you see, limited by the technology of drawing-in-chat-window-stuff @PH13

10:53 AM
@diffracteD 4D plot ... aha ... gif? xD
or 3D with colors for the 4th dimension?
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M are you the house of spongebob?

3D with colors is my first aim @PH13

@diffracteD I did this once for atomic orbitals

@PH13 Yes.

@PH13 if my imagination permits then later on I would like to try an animated plot also...
3d with color seems to serve my purpose, though I have not yet been able to get it correct...

:O

11:03 AM

Q: Do Chemists "discover," "invent," or "create" things?

michael_timofeevI am an ESL teacher, and am designing an activity to teach my engineering students the differences between the words "invention," "discovery," "innovation," and "creation," words that are often confusing for non-native speakers (and as I'm finding out, native speakers.) I have looked on the inte...

11:42 AM
they do all of that

sure
but unless OP provides the definitions of all these activities

discovering means finding new molecules in, e.g., algae/bacteria's metabolism or whatever

I'm ready to close the question
:D
@PH13, things are the way you define them,
Unless defined a word does not have any meaning.

but they have defined meanings by common dictionaries, right?
discover: to be the first person to become aware that a particular place or thing exists; to find sb/sth that was hidden or that you did not expect to find; to find out about sth; to find some information about sth
no matter which one of those definitions you choose, they are all right

the all are synonyms according to Oxford dict, as I mentioned

11:46 AM
lol

if someone would like to make a particular distinction
he/she is free to do it
but they have to stress these important (from their point of view) differences explicitly
otherwise the discussion is meaningless

sure

Just tell me
do you feel any difference between
Nobel invented dynamite, created it, or discovered it?
I don't.
I'm fine with all three.

I think there are differences, yes

If you think so, then you have to stress these differences,obviously.
For me they are all the same. :D

11:53 AM
for me, create in this context means sth like synthesis
so I can create stuff that has been discovered before
to discover does not mean that sth was invented before but only that it was unknown before
but sth that is invented needs to be discovered and modified or to be created

the problem with this
is that these are your own defs

\o @Beta

Hey, you wouldn't mind helping me with a problem I'm having, would you?

Welcome to our chatroom!

@BetaDecay try it ^^

11:58 AM
@BetaDecay Go on. I'm eating lunch, but @Wildcat and @Ph13 are available.

Haha alright, recently I performed a reaction of siloxene and cerium(iv) sulphate. I've tried looking online for any further information about it, but there isn't anything

please hold the line ... the next mentor will be available soon .... please hold the line ...
makes some curious melody

If it helps, the reaction created a yellow chemiluminescent substance

what exactly was the reaction and what is your question?
what is >it< for which you want further information?

good-ol' chemistry...

12:02 PM
g'old ? ;D

Well that's the problem, I don't know what the reaction was, so I want to find information about what happens when siloxene reacts with cerium(iv) sulphate

I step back
:D

sure it's siloxene? I know siloxane the other one I have to google now

@BetaDecay, sounds like a good question.
Post it!

@Wildcat only if there is more information provided than here
otherwise it's too broad, isn't it?

12:04 PM
@PH13, to start from, I think, it is enough.

then go on @BetaDecay

I mixed A and B under this conditions. Then I observed this and that.
What happened?!
:D

then suddenly a meteor hit the spot

:O
And life began...

Haha well when you mix the siloxene and cerium(iv) sulphate, the resulting chemical glows a bright yellow light. And that's it

12:06 PM
@Wild kitty is really amazed today.

I would have thought a question like this would be off topic on SE though

as I said, it could be off-topic due to "too broad" ... but that's my personal opinion and as @Wildcat said, he would not think so ... give it a try

I've still got the full method if that helps

@PH13 There have been a lot of questions like this answered back at chem.

12:08 PM
Including synthesis of the siloxene

@BetaDecay Please don't leave any detail behind!

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M perfect

Purrfect?

exactly

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Sure, I'll work on the question later :)

12:11 PM
this sounds as if this could be sth to investigate on
-> chemiluminescent indicator

I think that might answer my questions
Thanks @PH13 :)

12:32 PM
i have another source
@BetaDecay

Chemiluminescence during the reaction of siloxene with cerium(IV) sulfate
By: Grigorenko, F. F.; Dubovenko, L. I.

The intensity of luminescence of siloxene (polymd. siloxane (Si6O3H6)n) in the presence of Ce(IV) is greater in H2SO4 than in HCl or HNO3. It also is max. if the ratio of siloxene to Ce(IV) is one Si6O3H6 unit per ion. A scale for detg. Ce is prepd. by adding 0.05 to 0.35 ml. 0.002M Ce(SO4)2 to enough M H2SO4 contg. 0.02 g. siloxene to make 2 ml. The cuvette is placed before the window of the photomultiplier before mixing. The max. in the light emission is plo

pH is sourcy today.

a little
maybe @Wildcat can haz more insight in this article?

Well you've been a great help. I'm just typing up the method now, so I can ask the question

Do ask!

do ask!

Q: Difference in acid strength of ethanedioic acid and propanedioic acid

Kai Despite very similar skeletal structures, the difference in acid strength is quite significant. What is the reason for that? It seems that the inductive effect plays a role, but how can we explain the inductive effect in ethanedioic acid as there is same group on opposite sides? How does th...

@BetaDecay @inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M ithinkispider.com these are german saying that are translated literally into english ... so that's funny for germans only

1:04 PM
@BetaDecay I that you?

@BetaDecay see:
The term Lübke English (or, in German, "Lübke-Englisch") refers to nonsensical English created by literal word-by-word translation of German phrases, disregarding differences between the languages in syntax and meaning. Lübke English is named after Heinrich Lübke, a president of Germany in the 1960s, whose limited English made him a target of German humorists. For example, it was alleged that Lübke said to Queen Elizabeth II when they were waiting for a horse race to start: Lübke's statement: Equal goes it loose." The sentence Lübke had in mind: "Gleich geht es los." Meaning of the statement: ...

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M this fancy question that you showed me

Oh, the question about blessing?

if you call it so

@PH13 "Porn" in Thai means "blessing".
