Q: What effect does a bat's echolocation have on other bats?

Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. Bat echolocation is a perceptual system where ultrasonic sounds are emitted specifically to produce echoes. By comparing the outgoing pulse with the returning echoes, the brain and auditory nervous system can produce detailed images of the bat's surroundings. This allows bats to detect, locali...

@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. Expansion into biology? ;)

@Mithoron biology of vampires?

@Loong Know thy enemy :D

1:51 AM
Sigh..this might be a stupid question, but what's the difference between sound and temperature? Aren't they both caused by the vibration of molecules?

2:02 AM
@SirCumference-Pies And why you think asking about this here is good idea? ;)

@Mithoron Ehh...kind of worried about asking it as an actual question

@SirCumference-Pies And what's the difference between my fingers being warm and writing this?

@Mithoron Er...I'm sorry?

That would be probably first reaction for your question - the difference is similar :)
@SirCumference-Pies Temperature is connected with heat - chaotic movement of all atoms. Sound is wave - much more ordered
@ManishEarth Hello :)

2:17 AM
@SirCumference-Pies In need to go to sleep, maybe @Manish will describe it better if you ask him ;)

Er...ok
So, why would movement being ordered vs random have such a different effect?
Temperature leads to heat, which can cause burns or just discomfort. Sound, on the other hand, usually only affects the ears and can never really cause burns.

2:32 AM
@SirCumference-Pies You could be surprised what really strong sound can do ;)

Yeah, I know some of its extreme effects
Like lifting objects
But can heat even do that?

Mercury in thermometer

Oh yeah...

:) bye guys

But the two act so differently. A small amount of sound won't affect us too much, but heat changes in certain parts of the body (like having a fever) could kill us

2:35 AM
For the half reaction method how can the Na be dealt with in the following reaction MgS + CO2 -> Na2C2O4 + MgSO4 + H2
@Mithoron bye!

@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. I'll be sure to let you know if I ever figure it out.: lol

5 hours later…

@SirCumference-Pies Their identities are very different.
Apples and oranges are both fruits. But they aren't the same.
Welcome to the Table, BTW!

Why don't you write that backwards like your name once was, @ina?

Too lazy.

Bawww, but I'm having my lazy day today already D= Copycat²!

@Jan Why don't you go answer some bio instead?

@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. Because vampires have lost their echolocation in evolution.

Wow, I sparked 'controvery' with my answer to the homework question. +2/-2. Didn't see that coming xD

@Jan answer to the homework question?
ah, ok, on meta.
I was confused because I was checking answers to homework questions on the main site.
And I found one of your answers that hasn't found the desired love yet.

@Loong Haha, isn't +1 usually enough love for a homework answer? ;)

@Jan That's all the love I can give. ;-)

Jan
@Loong You're making it sound so … erm, pathetisch? ;)

@Jan oh dear, no. It was just a +1 upvote, not a +500 bounty. ;-)

Jan
Can you still edit that? It's missing a t ;)
And here I was too late to delete my message ^^

Jan
4:00 PM

@Jan Oh you should be. The Table is full of people like this.

5:17 PM
Hmm, improvement. Top reviewer in 2 queues, close to being the top in 1, and still bowing down to the mighty ron in the other 3.

5:50 PM
@Mithoron Yes, since I already have conquered chemistry.
