Prof just told someone that a pi bond becoming two sigma bonds is something that should only be considered from an enthalpic standpoint ....
I don't see why this fairy tale has to be told; even in basic chemistry is it nice to know that sigma bonds enable relatively free rotation (relative to pi bonds)
