@LordStryker, @Dissenter Researcher at day, working on enlightenment at night...
I can now tell you, enlightenment is not in a bottle of beer, but it's pretty close to that, I am absolutely sure of it. Worst thing however is, that you often forget your research data the next day and you have to do it all over again.

2:53 AM
Uh oh
@Martin have you heard of charge-shift bonding

@Dissenter nope, never heard of it...

Oh lol I posted about it; the link is a message or two above
:D
Basically "large ionic resonance energy" involved in bonding
I think

Yes I read it, sounds interesting. I'll have to read more about it...

Just posted another theoretical chemistry question regarding C-S bond lengths; expecting a Matrix level answer from ron
@LordStryker the main argument my prof has against one paper I showed him about bond angles in nitrous acid was that the studied mixture of gases was 99% something else and <1% nitrous acid.
Is this a valid issue?
The mixture wasn't pure nitrous acid because I don't think it was stable enough to be 100% nitrous

@Dissenter to be honest i'm not entirely sure. I don't know enough about nitrous acid and its stability in the gas state. Perhaps nitrous acid needs a carrier gas for safe and appropriate detection. But again I dont know.

Hydrogen Iodide, Bromine Oxides!
How do I dissolve a large chunk of metal?
conc. HCl and heating? is that enough?
@ManishEarth: hola señor. ¿Cómo estás?

Estoy bien
@Nick usually, yes

@ManishEarth: Do I have to heat it long? The stuff I have is Ferratic Stainless Steel

@Nick uh, not sure. Stainless steel contains more chemicals to prevent corrosion
chemicals or something

@ManishEarth: lol, ok, let's just consider the iron-chromium alloy without the nasty stuff.
I wanna see it dissolve.
(with chemicals in my school lab ofcourse)
:D Maybe I should just do a rain dance and let the acid from the clouds take care of it.
Maybe I'll ask it on main. Hopefully, I wouldn't be too vague.
;/ Maybe I will

When man thinks of one resonance contributor, God (ron) thinks of another four).

Q: Carbon-Sulfur Bond Lengths; Resonance Effects (Or Lack Thereof)

DissenterWhy is the C-S bond in $\ce{CH_2SH^-}$ longer than in $\ce{CH_3SH}$? Wouldn't there be resonance in the former, forcing the C-S bond to contract? http://www.nrcresearchpress.com/doi/pdf/10.1139/v75-431 Also while we're at it are there any non ab initio calculations/empirical studies on thi...

7:35 PM
@Dissenter I have a pile of work to do today, but I set up some calculations and should have a better answer this evening.
I'm a bit surprised this hasn't been observed experimentally, but I'll search a bit more on SciFinder.
I think the paper you cited is old enough that I don't completely trust it.
