Water intoxication, also known as water poisoning, is a potentially fatal disturbance in brain functions that results when the normal balance of electrolytes in the body is pushed outside of safe limits (e.g., hyponatremia) by overhydration, i.e., over-consumption of water. Under normal circumstances, accidentally consuming too much water is exceptionally rare. Nearly all deaths related to water intoxication in normal individuals have resulted either from water drinking contests in which individuals attempt to consume large amounts of water, or long bouts of intensive exercise during wh...

@NickT Hmm.. Unfortunately, \mhchemotpions doesn't work :/
Of course, we can change the font size for the rest of the page a teensy bit
Or leave some spacing by-default between lines

Q: What is natural bond orbital theory used for?

Richard TerrettMy understanding is that the NBO methodology transforms the molecular orbital picture of a molecule into a collection of pairwise interactions (bond orbitals). This is obviously handy for didactic and comprehension purposes as it distils what might be a very complex and non-local MO picture into ...

Oh dear, NBO. And NPA and the natural resonance one and argh.

Hmm, it seems that $('.mtext').css('font-size','16px') makes the chem smaller, but it doesn't solve the alignment issue since the subsups stay too high
@Andrew Mhchem itself allows configuring the \ce{} font. But not Mathjax-mhchem

Q: Is a 2-D periodic structure isomorphic with the surface of a torus, a sphere, neither or both?

Richard TerrettWhen I was reading through the ADF-BAND tutorials, one of the toy systems presented was a 1-D periodic structure involving 3 collinear hydrogen atoms. The tutorial pointed out that, topologically speaking, this is cylindrically symmetrical (more specifically, it's ring symmetrical). In the insta...

okay, fingers crossed, knocking on wood, I'm submitting a paper to the JACS…
also, probably not on topic, but worth asking anyway: who is the saint patron of chemists?
I could really light a candle there for him/her…

Q: Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry: Can I use peak ratios and molecular mass to derive quantity?

AnthonyCan derive the quantity of a substance from a GC/MS report if I know: the ratio to another substance in the data, the quantity of that second substance, and the molecular mass of both substances. The site was very dense and vague regarding how GC/MS test work, but fairly upfront regarding ...

@Fx (yes, I know @replies don't work for you, but I'm on a tablet so I can't post-reply without a lot of work)

Good luck! Wrt on-topic, I think that _anything_ chem-related is on-topic on chat.. Saint patron... Hmmm.... Mendeleyev? If you want a guy whose research made him _rich_, then use Alfred Nobel ;-)

@Manishearth the institution I'm working at was once headed by Henri Moissan (#29 on your list)

@Fx Nice :) Go to his old office and light some candles! (Warning: may get you thrown out)

my own favourite in the list is: Amedeo Avogadro — Italian — First to distinguish molecules from atoms

Q: Definitions of autocatalysis

NathanielIs there a formal definition or algorithm that can take a list of reactions and tell me whether it contains a set of species that can produce itself autocatalytically? It is clear that the following reaction is autocatalytic: $$ A + B \to 2 B. $$ $B$ appears on both sides of the equation, so ...

Hi I'm not part of the Private Beta but it seems I was able to get into your chatroom. I don't know if it's supposed to work that way, but in case it wasn't, I just thought I'd let you know.

@DoubleAA The more the merrier! :D
