Do you remember when @SamBrand wrote about Hot Trends?
Well, back in June there was a hot trend about viral Facebook privacy notices.
I wrote the accepted answer, which quoted from Snopes, Naked Security and Slate.
Two days ago, the notices went viral again.
I noted two things:
The protective effect of having a mass of people learn about a FB hoax is less than 6 months :-(
I saw lots of replies to the hoax linking to various sources, including Snopes, Naked Security and tech news sites. However, I didn't see any to Skeptics.StackExchange, (apart from those I wrote).
I think that counts as a disappointing result.

@Oddthinking We need to achieve herd immunity ;-). I suspect that you don't need all that many people for a post to go viral, and you'd probably need at least 80-90% that won't forward such crap to have a chance to stop it

Q: Do people sweat what they eat?

acheong87I'm attempting to discredit (usually racist) stereotypes/beliefs regarding what people eat and how they smell. Say, Indians and curry, Koreans and garlic, among other examples. (Maybe the examples aren't appropriate and should be edited out; I only mean to give context.) I imagine compounds with...

Q: Are vets legally allowed to treat humans?

Tom77A letter in The Daily Telegraph claims: Vets are allowed legally to treat humans although doctors cannot treat animals. In my experience, vets offer the efficiency, pragmatism, charm, humour and common sense so often lacking in the NHS. Are vets legally allowed to treat humans?

The claim and Poulianos' interp...

Q: Do frank (but not gratuitous) discussions or depictions of sexuality traumatize children?

ShadiraI've heard many parents, on several occasions, make statements to the effect that they believe it to be harmful to discuss sexuality openly and directly with young children (I'm talking about kids aged 5-10 or so). Movies and TV shows with sex scenes (not pornographic ones, but unmistakeably non...

Q: Did SOPA and PIPA succeed in proving themselves to be healthy for gaining more profit for the production houses?

Mistu4uBefore SOPA and PIPA were dicussed in US parliament, a strong debate was going on whether they should be passed or not. Then the production houses were screaming that piracy has made them severely harmed economically. So these two rules need to be passed in order to maintain growth of the film in...

Q: Is a claim published on the letters page of a newspaper notable?

Tom77I recently asked about a claim that I saw on the letters page of a national newspaper. There was a comment that this wasn't a notable claim. I've asked questions on previous occasions about claims I've seen on newspaper letters pages (here, here and here). There was also a comment on that last on...

Q: Is the rate of Human Evolution Slowing down?

IshanI know that this question already exists and have read through. Is human evolution slowing down? Q: Is today's unemployment worse than the Great Depression?

Evan CarrollJust saw this come across Facebook, It reads, UNEMPLOYMENT If we measured unemployment the way they did during the 1930s, today's unemployment would be worse than any single year of the Great Depression. The graphic gives these numbers: 1931 - 15.3% 2009 - 21% 1932 - 22....
