Q: How to introduce myself professionally in a workplace

user2059935I will be working in a new company soon, I want to know how to introduce myself professionally. I though of something like Hello, I am FirstName LastName, from Country, Working in CompanyName Department DepartmentName Maybe that is enough; I don't know. Do you have better suggestions?

Q: How do I address my new colleagues?

user2059935I will start working in a new company soon, as a developer (I am 27 years old). Shall I be formal with my colleagues and use Mr. and Ms. + last name, or is it okay to use the first name directly? Or something in between, for example: Mr and Ms. + first name? Dutch firm

Q: 27 years old, shall I wear tie and suit in my first day at my new company?

user2059935I am moving to a new firm, I already finish all the interviews and the tests and got accepted. I am wondering if in my first day, it is good to wear tie and suit (or just suit) or something less formal. I am 27 years old and my job title is Developer.

@enderland is it me or are these 3 questions with the same damm question in a different wording?

@RaoulMensink in all fairness, Kilisi's answer was in response to an act of violence. I also believe he was 100% sincere. He started out working with his hands, as I did. The rules or the workplace can be the laws of the jungle when you work blue collar jobs

@RichardU I mean in General his answers are often more out there, I can remember one where he said "When I kindly offered my Manager to feed him his chair if he mentioned my wife again in a certain context"

Q: How do I navigate conversation about a raise/promotion when there is a potential offer available?

ChrisI currently work in a company, as a software developer, receiving a salary of 80K. (average in my area per glassdoor is 90K with national average of 95K). Also about 1.5 years ago I have negotiated an increase from 75K to the 80K + 2 weeks more vacation time. Recruiters are starting to call me...

And People on this site make to much Money :(

Kaz
@RaoulMensink Depends on the profession. Senior software development in a global tech hub has certain dynamics that make those kind of salaries pretty standard.
Pretty much any tech company you hear about has Revenue per employee of $500k+

@kaz I could make a good living with 7.8k (netto) a year. Just the shear amount of Money I wouldnt know what to do with PFFF

Kaz
Worth mentioning that if you live in one of those tech hubs, the cost of living is also through the roof, so those salaries aren't as huge as you would think.

I live in one of the most expensive City in Germany for appartments

Kaz
IIRC, average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Silicon valley is $30k/year

12:53 PM
how much m²?

1:05 PM
@Kaz That would get you a broom closet in NY City.

You People are crazy

@RaoulMensink still think they make too much money? It's not your earnings, it's earnings vs cost of living.

@RichardU well its true someone has expensive liveing costs but I doubt that at the end of the day I will come out ahead :P

1:39 PM
@RaoulMensink I am paying nearly $18,000 per year for a 1 bedroom apartment, and that is considered very cheap for my area.

I am not sure "questions require a goal we can address" is sufficient. We need another close reason: off-topic because "asker should mind their own business".

3:42 PM
@MaskedMan I saw that. I can't stand buysbodies

3:53 PM
@RichardU I won't tell you what we pay for our house, but it's a lot less than that :P
@RaoulMensink probably
@Kaz this isn't really true, a lot of companies in the tech world are not profitable (though perhaps still technically their revenue meets your criteria)
Twitter for example isn't even profitable currently

@MaskedMan I actually disagree that the question should have been closed. Yes, the premise of the question was faulty, but it is still a question that should be answered with "Don't do that."
This type of answer has been talked about in Meta before: meta.workplace.stackexchange.com/questions/2321/…

@enderland Generally speaking, at the micro level, salaries are a function of how much revenue you add or how many costs you reduce. Profitability is related but tends to affect things on more of a macro level.
Well actually, to be fair, salaries are a function of supply and demand, but the "demand" side of that equation is a function of how much a company thinks you will benefit their revenue/costs.
And when there are profitable companies with huge demand for skilled developers willing to pay big salaries to attract them, that sets base salaries across an entire market/region.
Which every company (whether they're profitable or not) pays until either they become profitable, or they run out of money.

4:19 PM
@Kaz generally yes, but keep in mind tech startups often have "unlimited" money in the form of tons of venture capital and/or IPO money
I don't disagree that for long-term profitable companies that is the case, but I think that tech startups are their own sort of special when it comes to salaries

@enderland If I still had my house, it would be less than that. That's what kills me

@DavidK "Don't do that" is a superset of "Mind your own business", in some sense. Example: "How do I deceive my colleagues into believing I am two levels senior than my actual role?" is a DNDT, but not MYOB. "I suspect my colleague is cheating on his wife, how do I confirm this?" is both DNDT and MYOB. Questions of the former type may be okay, but questions of the latter type will only add to the garbage here.
