Q: Swap Duplicate Redirect

LilienthalIs it unethical to say my current employer has financial problems when looking for another job? Was closed as duplicate of this, admittedly older, question: Can I disclose my company's financial troubles when applying for new jobs (UK)? But I believe the newer question is much more suited to b...

Q: New employee has offensive slack handle due to language barrier

WalleA new employee just came on board, and their lack of understanding of the english language has been a bit of a hurdle. This has become apparent in the slack handle they chose: poonPounder Granted their actual name is: Poonjay And their last name contains the word Pound. So I'm in a ...

This guy is really pissing me off

@DavidK I saw the comments before they were deleted. He's acting like a nickname for my first name.

Stack Exchange is not a discussion board. Go to reddit if you want a discussion board. This is a question/answer site. — enderland ♦ 8 secs ago

S.lut, G.Ayman, F.Uckman. I could go on, but I think you get the idea. Never use peoples' initials in generated email addresses. It will inevitably cause problems. — Kaz 1 min ago
Not the first time I've had cause to invent inappropriate email addresses for a comment ^^

3:24 PM
@enderland don't know if you noticed but he put the person's actual name (without consent of course) and it was edited out. Should that be removed from the edit history?

Kaz
@ChristopherEstep Probably worth flagging to the OP, but IMO it's up to them if they want to remove it or not.

@kaz I had a case where a woman just entered her Initials in her firstname field, we had this System where customers could see their Picture and Name relevant Information. her Initials were D.D. needless to say we changed that soon after the CEO mentioned it.

@Kaz It's more a flag for a moderator, since the OP can't change the revision history.

Q: Comment flagging - please try to use an appropriate flag type

Q: My question was edited by a moderator, it was a poor edit, and now edits are locked?

And while this moderator was rather rude, I am completely ignoring that and having an issue with...

@kevin-fegan when a conversation is "moved" to the chatroom, I don't think the messages are actually migrated. You are only encouraged to start up the conversation here.
Perhaps the terminology could be improved.

Sometimes they are migrated. when that happens, there's a link.

ah, good to know!

yup

Let's see if I can summon this guy in here.

good luck with that.

@Walle re: "many found these comments met guidelines and were informative"

The guidelines are very clear. Comments are not for extended discussion, even if it's "useful". You can fight to change the Stack Exchange guidelines if you like, but that doesn't mean you should break them in the meantime.

@DoritoStyle Well that sounds arbitrary to your interpretation of the guidelines.
Define extended discussion, is it back and forth conversation? In which case I agree. Is it a large group providing information? In that case I disagree

http://workplace.stackexchange.com/help/privileges/comment

When shouldn't I comment?
[...]
Secondary discussion or debating a controversial point; please use chat instead;
Discussion of community behavior or site policies; please use meta instead.

Yes, so back and forth from the sounds of it. But what Walle, Kik, myself, and at least a dozen others were involved in was not any of the above
Seems a large portion of the community, myself included is not happy with this deletion.

I wasn't privvy to those comments, so what was being commented on? A large number of comments is off-topic almost by definition, unless every single one of those dozens of comment was each directly adding something specific to the question or answer.

Then why are you arguing this?
They were in my opinion

7:43 PM
That's fine too, but "policy is that with which you may disagree, but not disregard."

Sure, not sure where that's coming from but I agree

if comments were flooding the question and not adding, then they don't fit the guidelines and should have been carried out in chat to begin with. Chat is very useful.
Look at it this way:

Regardless of policy or the sky being blue those comments were providing value, as so many people expressed

if a user comes along years from now, should they have to wade thru dozens of comments to get good information? No they should be able to read the question & answers and be done, that's the SE philosophy.
So, instead, come to chat, hash out the whole discussion, and only add the relevant points to the questions or answers themselves.

Sure, but there was important info in the comments. Again, yes the sky is blue, but that has nothing to do with this discussion

7:46 PM
@JeffQuick Making light of and revealing a person's real name in a back and forth banter is NOT "providing value" to the purpose of Stack Exchange

From the guidelines again, "Comments are temporary "Post-It" notes left on a question or answer."
temporary is the operative word there.

@enderland not at all what anybody is saying
those were fine to delete
the issue is that the comments deleted after that deletion had useful info

Then they should have been added as edits to the answers

Why?
they weren't part of an answer
they were follow up questions to the question

because it literally says that in the guidelines as well :)
That's what this boils down to. Comments are not a good place for useful info, since they are fair game for deletion and cleaning up. Questions & Answers are where the useful stuff should live, and if you needed to talk something out, chat is the place for that because it doesn't clutter a question page.

7:48 PM
Something that apparently is getting lost here is that the site has rules and guidelines. Whether 5 people want to chat in comments is irrelevant. It's against the guidelines.
2

@DoritoStyle if you can explicitly point out where that is in the guidelines, I'll shut up. "@Walle - Monica is known for deleting everything and anything that is not written by her - JonH" and all the up votes about the comments being useful seem to say otherwise

Please take a bit of time to read the guidelines, they're remarkably short and clear.
"When shouldn't I comment?

Comments are not recommended for any of the following:

Suggesting corrections that don't fundamentally change the meaning of the post; instead, make or suggest an edit;
[...]"

Stack Exchange isn't a discussion board. The purpose isn't chatting and making karma-generating points
it's a question answer board. period
chat is a discussion board, it's chat

Again, yes I know the sky is blue. That has nothing to do with the point a large part of the community found those valuable. How was left field enderland?

@enderland agreed, and that's part of why I love Stack Exchange so far. @JeffQuick, sorry if it seems like i'm running a crusade here.
It's not up to the community to decide these things. They can petition to change them in the Meta StackExchange, but the guidelines are predefined by the site creators.
The site has a strong mission statement in order to make sure it maintains value when competing with more "democratic" places like Reddit.

7:53 PM
Jeff, the rules don't change because "a large part of the community" wants them to.

@JeffQuick Workplace has always had relatively heavy handed moderation. Some justified, some not but there is heavy moderation here nonetheless.
2

@JeffQuick if you want a place where funny comments are valued and permanent, Stack Exchange will let you down
of course the many users who flagged all those comments you found so much value in didn't find them funny, among other reasons why they are gone
3
well, I guess I don't know if they found them funny, they still flagged them

That's a great point. Consider the possibility that people who value clean clutter-free questions are the silent majority in this case. There are far more than dozens of people interacting on the exchange alone, and the upvotes were quite likely out-done by flags.

So I'm just gonna quit while I'm ahead, I get the idea reading comprehension isn't everybody's strong suit. We're arguing "The sky is blue" "no the tallest mountain is mt everest". and enderland, what? No... where did you get that from? I know left field seems fun, but it's not.
no one ever said they were funny
just informative

I'm sure what was just a random example, don't take it too literal.
You either agree with the guidelines or you don't, and that's fine! But they won't be changed because it would subvert much of the entire philosophy of this site.

8:04 PM
@JeffQuick if you feel this strongly my recommendation is to make a meta.SE post suggesting that SE change their model for comments
3

Agreed. That is the best option for change and they are certainly not rejected lightly IMO.

I would suggest doing so in a less condescending way, though, if you want it to be taken seriously
2

@enderland calling the tea kettle black?

No, I've ignored all of the barbs you continue to make towards me, with the exception of that comment (and now this) and instead focused on the issues you are discussing

...right...

8:11 PM
@JeffQuick saying this like "And the sky if blue" is highly condescending, and while trying to remain neutral, I don't see @enderland doing anything but stating facts.

Oh joy and yummies. another fight instigated

I'm genuinely sorry about that, I in no way meant to be condescending with that, I meant to provide a simple example of the fact we were arguing two completely different points that don't even conflict with each other. Trying to convey a "yes I agree to your point and..."
But enderland was truly coming out of left field with little context to the situation.

Telling someone that they're comments are out of "Left Field" is also condescending, albeit less so.
In any case, every comment he made directly refuted a claim you made with documented guidelines.
(I'm only commenting to add context, I'm sure enderland is quite capable of defending their own actions here)

I was not arguing the guidelines what so ever

@DoritoStyle Enderland is a big boy, he can take care of himself.

8:15 PM
that was the issue

Hmmmm, sorry, I didn't notice that bridge

You are, you may not see it that way, but asking for comments to be considered useful and allow them to permanently remain is in direct contradiction to the guidelines I quoted above.

pops some popcorn

sure... fine... construe the english language as you please, seems to be the theme on this stackexchange.

crunch crunch crunch crunch

8:18 PM
If that's your position, then I think we've exhausted the usefulness of this discussion, even for the chatroom...

I love it when two trolls battle and leave the rest of us alone.

I agree. As I said in my quit while I'm ahead comment that you and enderland pulled me in from. How is this remotely trolling? Because I don't agree with mods?

If someone is calling you a troll, just ignore them. No good will come of that.
Literally, put them on "ignore everywhere" ;)

extra butter! Yummy

@RichardU that's not really helping

8:20 PM
there's a way to ignore users?

Yep, click their username in here, then click the link for their "user profile". There is an "Ignore this user" button there.

Can I ignore mods?

@enderland sorry, I was hoping to distract them, but no such luck.

Haha, I don't know

@enderland Is there a "Patience of a saint" award? You deserve it
Nice platinum badge?

8:22 PM
you can ignore users on chat, but not main site

Correct, you will still see their answers, etc. and interact in comments

Great to know, thanks

I'm pretty sure I requested it for main site once before, but I can't find the link on meta.SE

Given the strict moderation of the main site exchanges, I find that I manage to deal with certain users much better out there than in chat (which is probably for the bets, the main site remains clean and orderly and useful!)
Not everything that is strict is bad after all!

Yeah, you get used to it.
Don't get me going on closures. :)

8:33 PM
lol. Programming joke?

But even with that, I do what I can to be diligent in reviewing and try to reopen what is (to me) an obvious on-topic question.
no, closing questions, @JeffQuick

ah bummer lol

I did see a programmer joke yesterday that said "in order to understand recursion, you need to understand recursion" :)

haha too true
