Q: Working for a manager who doesn't manage!

MikeSITUATION: I have been with the company I am with for over 15 years. Let me give some background information before I ask my question. First 5 years When I first started I reported to say Manager 1. Manager 1 was great... very knowledgeable and challenged me big time. At the time I was a ...

This is currently on hold but seems to be a duplicate of How do I respectfully go above my manager?. Can a mod change that close reason or should it just be left alone?

Q: My manager do not give me work? How can I deal with it?

Nomi AliI'm currently new to my job with new IT company where there is not much work. I am in my 3rd week in this company and my manager prefer other guy who is also new in the company for any task. I'm feeling unsatisfied in this company. What should I do? Should I switch to new company?

user114359
@NomiAli You might want to check back in an hour or two. It is still early in the day at least in the U.S. where there are a lot of users. That or just ping @enderland, I am sure he is busy not working.

Q: Merge Tags: workload and workload-distribution

LilienthalThe workload and workoad-distribution tags each have only a handful of questions. The latter seems like an unnecessary specification and I don't expect users to use both properly if we were to define them differently so I suggest that it's questions be merged into workload and that the distributi...

@Lilienthal you work with SAP?

@enderland I do indeed. Are you familiar with it?

@Lilienthal my main job responsibilities are ownership of the Data Services component
So indeed I am ;)

Hehe. Is that an ETL suite on top of the SAP DBs?

Yeah, it's similar to PI (or what used to be called XI, I think)

Huh, I'm actually working with PI a lot lately. I might even end up going for certification in it sometime next year. :)

1:09 PM
Data Services (or BODS) is relatively new compared to PI but is designed to handle the larger jobs that PI fails at, so if you have for example a 10mb file that you need to process (or do any meaningful data processing, really)

Ah, good to know.
Did you migrate to HANA already then? Or are you in consulting?

We have both - not everything is in HANA (though most people working with data Services are involved in HANA)

Yeah it seems to finally be reaching steam when it comes to adoption.

I'm not in consulting, my company basically created my position to try to avoid the entire knowledge base being done by consultants...

Haha.

1:12 PM
Which is a nice place to be, my job now is basically a dream job - I'm not as thrilled about SAP as the "domain" but I wanted a place to become a technical expert
and that's my responsibility in my current role

Yeah I hear you.
I'm not sure that many people are truly "excited" about SAP. :)

Mainly the lack of nice UX and documentation is the worst part about SAP

Yeah, those are common complaints alright.
The technical side of things still leaves a lot to be desired as well, but I guess that's to be expected when your codebase dates back to the seventies.

Yeah. But those problems lead to a lot of job security if you know the stuff...
maybe eventually a company will replace SAP but I think too many large companies are so invested in it that it'll take nearly a decade before that would happen

Yeah that's true enough I suppose.
And yeah, SAP is so prominent and is the de facto standard in certain industries.
Given the historical investment in both solutions and people, replacing it probably won't happen with the large companies.

1:17 PM
Yeah, at least anytime soon
Bigger companies have a lot of inertia...

I guess if enough new companies adopt a competing product that allows integration with SAP systems using a semi-open standard that might change.
Then gradually that might entice larger companies to adopt the new product as well.

Yeah, but the problem for us is that SAP is basically a skeleton - you can't replace a companies skeleton easily - so many systems connect to it, everyone has knowedge of it, etc

True.
And the cost to develop something on SAP's scale and customisation makes it hard for any competitor to offer the same value I'd say.

Yeah
Especially once SAP works
Then you are adding a tooon of risk

You'd probably have a much cheaper solution but I imagine startup and customisation costs would be much, much higher than out-of-the-box SAP offerings.
Especially then yeah.

1:22 PM
Yup

I guess the fact that we've got 2 people working with SAP in the same chatroom is nice anecdotal evidence of their prominence. :)

We'll see where my journey goes, in IT at my company there is a lot more career options with promotions in IT, probably because of what we are just talking about

Indeed.
I kind of just rolled into ABAP development by chance. I'm also not sure whether this is the direction that I want to continue in. I've been meaning to look into SAP HANA Cloud Integration which is apparently an Enterprise Integration engine that SAP built off Apache Camel. EI seems to have been growing in importance and the Internet of Things will only make it more popular I imagine.

I think I'd like to end up in heavy data processing work, I enjoy analyzing things and am generally good at it (since I'm a detailed person)
My managers have asked what my career goals or next steps are multiple times, even though I've been in my role for less than 6 months haha...

Sounds like a good place to work then.

1:27 PM
I like it, megacorps aren't for everyone but I like it

I remember talking to a random guy I met at a bus stop about 6 years back who told me to get into Big Data, OLAP and Data Warehousing as those industries were about to skyrocket.
Can't say he was wrong.

Yeah
No one really has experience with that stuff yet either
That's one reason I'm happy with my current job, while it's kind of ETL like that... translates well into those sorts of fields
My company tends to let people move around pretty easily, so I'm less worried about getting stuck in ETL work forever (though I kind of like it so far)

Q: Asking professors for syllabi to their classes when recruiting

I check in on the courses being offered from time to time and have noticed several have changed. Can asking for information or syllabi on classes be rude or inappropria...

Candidate for migration to Academia imo.

@Lilienthal So, not a mod here, but in general the question is whether it's a useful signpost pointing to the target, or not. Because the MSE guidance is to delete questions that are closed as off-topic and not reopened, but not delete duplicates that help make their targets more visible.
I'm not as familiar with the site as you are, but my instinct is that it's not that valuable.

Q: What's wrong about being honest about your career plans?

PicPucPremise Until a few weeks ago, I worked for a software company as a software developer. Honestly, I tried to do my best every day. Not only I did what I was supposed to do, but I always tried to improve practices and outcomes. Even though I was working for less then a year, I received many bene...

Sometimes I am really surprised how oblivious some people are about how others perceive them

lol @Air I got that notification and then was wondering if you meant to upvote or not and was rather confused
I feel for that guy though, when I was younger I basically ended a coop the same way he got fired, which was a really, really good learning experinece for me

Air
Everyone assumes "+1" means "+1 score because I upvoted you" but it's pretty ambiguous. Maybe it just means "+1 comment on this post"

I've... never thought about that before as applies to Stack Exchange

Air
Cue Nog Shine commenting "+1" randomly all over SO

my tweet question became such an hit, 9K views in a matter of 48 hours
can't believe it, I guess I should blog about it, now that my twitter profile needs some anonymity :P

the "Hot Questions" list is to blame for that ;)

6:07 PM
@Air Thanks for the explanation, wouldn't that question just be a straight-up migration though?
Ah turns out ender just migrated it earlier, thanks. :)
Re: the last linked question: you just know what you're in for when you see a post with chapters don't you? :)
Especially if one of them is simply called "Fired!"

Q: How do I deal with hiring reservations when resume is affected by brainsizing?

anonI have found job hunting difficult, and after an interview where an interviewer basically told me "You don't fit my preconceptions," tried to salvage by writing the only "thank-you letter" of its kind that I wrote showing anger as a way of communicating: Dear [Name, Name, Name, Name, and Name];...

What in the hell does brainsizing even mean?

6:26 PM
@Lilienthal I really hope that question doesn't get deleted... :(

Yeah I noticed it was up on meta.
"What I didn't say is that my IQ is in the profoundly gifted range" Oh boy.

Air
@enderland Why, is it accumulating delete votes?

@Air It has 4 delete votes already, yeah, I don't know how many it requires though

Air
I think it's 5

A: Should delete votes be limited like close votes?

Jarrod DixonWe had discussed this before, but deferred until there was a problem - it seems we now have a problem :) The new rules (also apply to undelete votes): 10k rep users get 5 deletion votes per day on questions they don't own - deletion rules on questions one does own are still in effect. Popular ...

maybe, it's complicated I guess
Oh it probably needs the maximum then

Air
6:32 PM
It should be around 7, then?

10 according to that

Air
3 base + [93 top-answer score + (-8) question score] / 20 popularity ratio

@Air oh just top scored answer. yeah, close depending on rounding

Not the maximum then :)

Hmmm I think I'm going to repcap today
Halfway to legendary... woooo

Air

Hehe
Yeah I'll join you in that Air. It certainly fits the useful criteria at least.

Q: Don't brainsize me, bro (discussion on brainsizing question)

enderlandI think this question should remain undeleted. Lots of people on this site have asked questions where that entire question/answer sequence would be relevant. Since being active here, I have found a lot of people who post questions here seem to have an, "I'm so awesome, why won't the world work w...

also I am now at 200 rep so you can both upvote my answer there in support of that goal (without feeling like I'm rep-whoring) ;)

Air
Like you need another gold answer badge :P

lol
@Air that question is pretty controversial, +16/-22 lol

Air
Heh, of course that's nothing compared to MSO/MSE

6:41 PM
Yeah
But it's quite a bit for Workplace
I've only pasted something 132 times since about noon yesterday, copied 112 times, and auto entered my password 27 times
I was expecting that to be higher

Air
Where do you retrieve these stats?

I wrote an AutoHotKey script to count for me :P
@user40489 I think that chat might be easier to discuss than a bunch of comments on your question (I think this lets you chat here)
