What justification do you think management might have for asking a colleague who's just handed in his notice to hold off on letting the office know he's leaving, because they want to handle it "more strategically"?
Is there some well-known possibility I'm just unaware of, or is this simply idle speculation without knowing any of the details surrounding his leaving?

Lots of reasons: they don't want a stampede before they can prepare for it; they have a candidate in mind and want to convince them to fill the opening before it is announced to everybody; they were ready to announce a reorg and now this changes everything;...
of course they can't hold off the news forever.

@AwalGarg funny timing, I guess I'm going to have an interview over skype in the near future - funny that we just were talking about this recently :)

Q: Reopen PhD career question?

enderlandHow does the process for applying for jobs look for a PhD? I made a fairly meaningful edit to this question, as I feel it is on-topic here as well as good question. I think it's a question which is meaningful now and answerable. Hoping to get some reopen votes or discussion!
