Q: How to hire a senior developer when no interviewer has that expertise?

Source41I work for a small company that has a very small development team. Before I joined the company was just the one senior developer who has been at the company for almost 10 years and designed and built the website. The website is business critical and it is how we make 99% of our income. I am a jun...

I know we had a nearly identical question before

@enderland we do, and I'm pretty sure I answered it. Hang on...
I think it is, but I'm not sure if the "senior developer is still here temporarily" angle makes it different. Opinions?

I'd say they are dups, the entire question is written from that perspective ignoring the senior dev being around

Ok. Since I proposed it, if you close it as a dupe that'll show that at least two people thought so.

Also 2 weeks to interview someone for a senior dev position that is underpaying means the poor guy is going to have to interview himself pretty much without any hope of getting someone in that time
It'd take a few days to get a job posted, a few more (probably a lot more) to get applicants, etc
Hi Source41! Like Monica said, this is the same as the linked question - if there are details which make your situation different, go ahead and edit your question to make it clear how your situation is different. — enderland ♦ 37 secs ago

@enderland probably, but small companies can be more flexible -- "yeah, we don't have the job posting up yet, but it'll be something like this -- wanna come talk?" happens not infrequently.
@enderland thanks.

@MonicaCellio yeah hard to say

@enderland well, if he thinks they'll be interviewing people before that senior dev leaves, and that that makes a difference, he can edit the question and then it'll go into review. I can't tell if that's a significant factor; doesn't seem that way to me, but if I'm wrong, that's easily fixed.

(Cat sticks his head in the door, says "yow!" and runs off to hide under the sofa. It's been that kind of day.)
