Good time zone @mhoran_psprep! Rarely see you in chat, what's up?

2:44 AM
Howdy @Ian! Anything I can help you with?

2:55 AM
Eh, not really, I'm working at getting a little more involved in the workplace and as a result found myself checking out the chat!

@IanHolstead Welcome aboard! Let me know if you need anything

Its a great community I like it a lot!

Glad to hear!

@jmac how long on the countdown before the super secret announcement?

@MattGiltaji Check my profile and see if you can figure it out.

3:07 AM
hmm
something with a driver's license?

@MattGiltaji Check my accounts

you are a mod everywhere... nice
does this mean you work for SE now?

Q: Will the real serial downvoter please stand up

3:33 AM
@MattGiltaji Something like that

@jmac I was wondering why you were so active on SE when you said you were starting a new job right about now. It all makes sense! Congrats!

Thanks!

4:00 AM
@jmac awesome! Congrats!

@MattGiltaji Thanks :D

Putting this here.... interesting read....

How should the OP discuss with the boss? How does the fact that the OP is from India (which has different culture than the western world) affect this? This answer is a great start but doesn't really answer the question. — enderland 14 secs ago

@enderland, it has come to pass.

This question will undoubtedly get answered from a western perspective and ignore the fact that the asker is in India

I received +10,700 reputation today as I signed up for 107 sites and got the association bonus.

Heh
I see what you did there

Something horrible must have happened.

and are going to do there in about 2 seconds
I figured that was what you were hinting at @jmac :) Congrats, too

Thanks.
I'm still learning the ropes, so give me some time to settle in before talking about your draconian SE overlords, okay? Thanks.
You love doing that, eh enderland?

Blame the folks in the Whiteboard ha
Its ok though, you're able to read those and in leiu of a direct message system well...

Very true.
For reference for anyone watching, that was enderland pledging his life and fortune to fighting for the future of The Workplace by being around 24/7 when we light the *Enderland Signal*™

12:32 PM
Does it get epic music like the lighting of the beacons in LoTR?
Ha
I'm glad that worked out for you though, are you the Japan community manager?

@enderland Not that I know of. Though I am not quite sure. I will be certain to ask at some convenient time.
Though I am the only community manager in Japan, for what that's worth.

Haha

There's, as you may guess, a wee bit of a learning curve. At any rate, I must return to my duties as NYC awakes.

aww we're going to lose @jmac too. It's like survivor over here on workplace :D

@enderland Lose? No. Not lose. You get me in all the ways you didn't want me, and lose what little shreds of value I actually created. That's just as good, right?

12:42 PM
You know what I mean.... ;)

More reasons you need to stick around and pick up the slack @enderland.
Luckily we have the contract signed in blood above that says you will never ever leave us again.
No pressure.
We appreciate whatever you can give (seriously)
Yeah, I can't promise that's what's coming up next.
(I am still on my first day)
but good to know!

Super cryptic. lol
wait so you are working overnight in Japan?

12:58 PM
Nah, I just need to touch base with the NYC people to get all the proper levers flipped and all that.
Definitely not planning on working overnight.
(tonight at any rate)

:-)

Q: How do I deal with a colleague who wears socks and sandles to work?

TomI have a colleague who wears socks and sandals to work. I feel this is really unprofessional and the lack of style offends me. Our office has a smart casual dress code, and this seems a blatant transgression of this. How can I resolve this problem? The options I can currently think of are: R...

Guess we need more people to actively VtC questions

what!? you cant close a question that has a bounty!?

@RhysW Indeed, however, you can downvote it to pieces apparently

by the time the bounty expires, the VtC will have aged out, right?

that seems like a really stupid clause

@MattGiltaji yes

6:41 PM
@enderland maybe we can get a mod to remove the bounty

@MattGiltaji I'm going to post a feature request that any question at -5 or -10 cannot have a bounty on it
or something.

or, the addition of a bounty shouldnt somehow overrule the basic fundamentals of the site

Q: Prevent bounties for questions which hit a negative threshold (and auto remove if the hit this)

enderlandSituation On smaller sites, some low quality questions may be downvoted but not closed This also applies to in scope but low effort questions, such as "give me teh codez" on Stack Overflow There is no threshold for a posts score in considering a bounty A user can add a bounty to a heavily dow...

@enderland I would upvote but spent all my MSE votes today :S

@MattGiltaji Haha I can't think of the last time I hit that cap
anywhere

6:52 PM
@enderland I hit it all the time
I like looking at old questions, and figure they deserve some vote love too

Ah, gotcha
I used to vote more
Guess I've voted about 2500 times here, that's a few votes

@Jmac am i to assume from the currently pinned star that IT happened?! :D

@RhysW yes

yay congrats J

7:03 PM
oh!

Just out of curiosity, is it going to remain that way for the foreseeable future?

@IanHolstead I'm not sure anyone really knows at this point, though I'd imagine eventually Workplace will get another official moderator (@jmort253 might know?)

@enderland yay, time to get the Caucus and Constituent badges!

:)

2 hours later…
9:24 PM
@enderland thank you for bringing that to my attention. I have refunded the bounty and closed the question.
@IanHolstead we won't stay at 2 mods permanently, no. While that's being worked out jmac retains (and has promised to continue using) his diamond here.

He will keep it regardless ;)

9:40 PM
@MonicaCellio Cool, I was just curious!

Q: Intern expected too much

BenI have been at an internship with a big company for the summer and it's coming to an end in a few weeks. I was hired as a programmer and this was my first "real" programming job. Well the first assignment I was given, which I asked for because I hadn't been assigned anything to do, was a spot of ...

Do you think that this question can be saved by editing or is it too broad/chatty (i.e. not made for SE)

eh, I'd say it's more of a "I feel overwhelmed idk what's going on!" type thing

how do you do the fancy embedded question post, btw? is there markdown for that?

@MattGiltaji if you leave a link to a question/answer/comment and post it by itself

Q: Wondering if my expectations are too high?

JosephAbout five weeks ago, I began an internship at a small (~ 35 total employees) software development company. I am a non-traditional CS student in that I went back to school after starting a family and a most interested in work and gaining experience. This internship is the closest thing I've had t...

success

9:58 PM
yeah!
(I saw @enderland do it and thought, there must be a way!)

you can do it with a comment text like this too -
> http://workplace.stackexchange.com/questions/31083/intern-expected-too-much#comment74200_31083
wtf I can't copy/paste
This is a huge wall of text right now. — enderland 10 mins ago

i tried to edit it and got confused partway through and gave up :S

@enderland right, but eventually he'll be expected to apply it to a hundred or so other sites in addition to us. :-)

@MattGiltaji I tried as well but I got the feeling it was not really worth it...

there's always a soft place in my heart for a new intern who finishes an internship and goes, "what the hell just happened, that was different"

10:09 PM
yeah, I feel bad closing this question as its a brand new SE account... the asker already had their dreams crushed in that internship

@MattGiltaji I'm on 3rd of 6 internships so you could say I understand the feeling...
@MattGiltaji Edit attempt #2!

I don't really see a question there

Q: How much am I expected to know as a technical student co-op?

CrowMy school provides a co-op program which will place students for interviews at companies. I applied to this and did end up getting a job doing technical work. I've been working for a few months. However, it isn't very clear what I was expected to know for this job having learned in school. For e...

I think that's a better duplicate, I should write an answer to it which is better

@enderland Agreed. The question can be improved quite a bit, but is boils down to a combination of the above two posted questions...

10:36 PM
Well, I tried. It probably will end up getting closed but at least its not a wall of text anymore (you know, if/when it is approved)

I disagree that you cannot answer that question in such a way to alleviate the asker's concerns. There are ways to answer questions which are factual to help with concerns the asker obviously has. Simply saying "My GPA was 2.5" is not one of them. — enderland 22 mins ago
actually prompted me to write up an answer for that question
so thanks enderland

@MattGiltaji I was going to answer too but I don't think I can really improve on your answer +1

10:54 PM
@IanHolstead Thanks! I'm trying to nail down what jmac told me earlier makes a great answer
24 hours ago, by jmac
@MattGiltaji No problem -- your post was backed up with personal experience, referenced the important rules, and even linked to a relevant post on another SE! That's a great answer.
and I thought this answer was spot on

A: Intern - how to deal with situation when my current project is on hold and I do not have more tasks to do in software industry?

Ian HolsteadThis has happened to me on a couple of my past internships this is what I have done: Ask your boss I know you already have asked and don't want to bother him too much, but from my experience people don't mind a short disturbance like this (especially when you are just trying to be more helpful)...

@MattGiltaji Thanks, its my only really legitimate answer. I have previously been slightly terrified about posting stuff online so the first answer I posted was a nervous panic which resulted in me reading the question wrong and then trying to patch my answer. However it did teach me a lot about how I should be answering questions (taking my time and stepping away for a minute before posting).
@MattGiltaji I try to only post decent quality content because we already have enough low quality stuff... You know, sorta like that saying when you were a kid, 'if you have nothing worth saying, don't say anything at all'

@IanHolstead I feel the same way. I agonize over my answers before I post them, and sometimes I will be 90% done with an answer and I'll see that someone else just posted a new answer that makes my exact same points
then I just discard it
Or sometimes I just can't nail down the proper wording, it just doesn't flow right, and I'll drop that too
but sometimes a question just clicks with me and this lightbulb goes off... OMG! I had that happen to me! I know exactly how to handle it! and the answer just flows from that

11:13 PM
@MattGiltaji mmm, I guess I need to try that more.

11:31 PM
Just relax -- nobody looks at your old answers.
Correction -- nobody looks at my old answers.

@jmac FALSE! I've been looking at your meta posts all afternoon
:p

Ah, Meta is a different beast, but the main site? Definitely nobody looks at those.
I mean, save the hundreds of thousands of googlers.

Q: How Should I Indicate Language Proficiency on my Resume?

jmacQuestion: What are some good ways of listing language proficiency on a resume? Problem: Language is such a complex thing to explain simply. There are several aspects of most languages (reading, writing, speaking, listening), and being good at one aspect doesn't mean you'll be good at the rest....

wow, I looked at that several times and never connected the dots that it was yours

Just the question, not the answer.
It's the most viewed question we have.
Partly because it's a common question, but mostly because jcmeloni hit the ball out of the park with that answer.

it is an awesome answer
