Q: That time of year again -- hats!

Monica CellioFor the last couple years Stack Exchange has done something fun and lighthearted as the year ends, Winter Bash. Winter Bash is an annual event that can run on any Stack Exchange site that chooses to participate. Users earn “hats” for their gravatars by completing certain tasks (analogous to badg...

@MonicaCellio I dunno about this hats thing. Hats seem to be popular, and we don't need any "trouble with popularity" if we end up having a lot of questions on the hat network questions list. I don't know how we would be able to check a question's arbitrary hatness points...

4:52 AM
@MattGiltaji it's true that the hatness formula is a secret, but as best I recall from the last two years, cross-site hat-seeking invasions weren't really a thing. We won't know what this year's hats are until they roll them out, of course.

all our mods have hat-friendly avatars. Ha!

@enderland my avatar already has a hat!

So I have a question but I"m not sure if acceptable or not :)
If there is a driving ban where I live preventing me from making it into work, or extreme weather, and I get fired as a result of it, can I pursue legal action? :)
it sounds like asking for legal advice, but I was trying to think of a way to make it on-topic
and for the record, no I wasn't fired or anything. I was just curious since I'm sitting in a few feet of snow that fell overnight, and see a lot of people voicing questions of that nature, such as this reddit post : reddit.com/r/funny/comments/2modlw/…

hmmm someone lives in New York :P

(and if you need further explanation of the situation, check out this picture : i.imgur.com/rt6EKxq.jpg - my workplace is in the clear area that was sunny with a tiny dusting of snow yesterday, and I'm in the city-eating-snowstorm and can't open my doors)
haha and yeah
I live by Buffalo, Ny :)
but it got me curious if there is a "normal" workplace policy for extreme weather or the town saying "stay off the roads or we'll give you a ticket"

I think that's probably a "talk with your boss/HR"

7:33 PM
Greetings!
I have a few questions about letter/resume/application for technology related employment, @enderland referred me here
May I go ahead?

go for it
I know @MattGiltaji is around and I bet @Rachel misses the workplace ;)

Here is a description of the position:
> Desktop Technician - Information Technology

Position Description
This position assists staff in [redacted] and remote locations with technical support of desktop computers, applications, and related technology. Support includes specifications, installation, and testing of computer systems and peripherals within established guidelines.

Position Requirements
-Assist staff with the installation, configuration, and ongoing usability of laptop and desktop computers, peripheral equipment, and software.
(it's for a call center for an insurance company, leave it at that)

Sounds like basic tech support?

Yeah, internal mostly. Working IT support tickets
I'm working now as a phone agent doing external support for vendors and such, so I've been around those tech support people for 5 years
Here is what I wrote for cover letter, header excluded:
> Dear Manager,

I am excited about the opportunity to apply for the Desktop Technician position which opened recently. I feel that I would be a strong candidate for this position for the following reasons:

- I am passionate about technology and computers and have worked extensively with various types of technologies during my tenure at [redacted];

- I am passionate about people and a strong proponent of teamwork and empowerment to help others progress together and reach a higher level of service;

my initial thought - you could very easily word this to benefit the manager

7:43 PM
Example?

> - I am passionate about people and a strong proponent of teamwork and empowerment to help others progress together and reach a higher level of service;

- I will use my passion for people, teamwork, and empowerment to help your team reach a higher level of service

talk about learning curve wrt your experience.

> - I have been working with computers since I was a teenager in the late nineties and can use this experience to benefit your internal customers

> I have done remote support for X technology for so long and would be able to translate the lessons learned there when supporting your technology Y

OK those are great, I will make changes to make it more directed to the manager's benefit

7:46 PM
you may also want to talk about your troubleshooting experience
when I was hiring support people, an understanding of how to troubleshoot was the best indicator of success
it also demonstrates that you can do more than just follow a phone support script

OK
Here is a revision, what do you think?
Left private company information, please disregard/delete
Here:
> Dear Manager,

I am excited about the opportunity to apply for the Desktop Technician position which opened recently. I feel that I would be a strong candidate for this position for the following reasons:

- I am passionate about technology and computers and have done remote support and troubleshooting extensively for 5+ years during my tenure at [REDACTED], and will be able to translate the lessons learned there to benefit call center technology;

- I will use my passion for people, teamwork, and empowerment to help your team reach a higher level of service;
One more question, on the CV/résumé do you think I should list technology experience before career experience, since it is tailored to internal technology?
> Technology Experience

- PC and telephony hardware: Good experience

Operating Systems

- Windows 7, Windows XP: Extensive experience

- Apple OSX 10.x: Extensive experience

Microsoft technology

- Office 2007: Extensive experience

- Websites, including [REDACTED] and dealer portals: Extensive experience
(I should be done bugging you all after this :)

8:10 PM
so is this for a position at the same company or at a different company from your current one?

Same

k
one sec, work thing just came up

No worries I got all day

8:38 PM
sorry about that
for me personally, the tech experience section takes up a lot of space
but I personally never liked the whole "rate yourself" type of stuff
and I've seen it work for other people

What alternatives would you suggest, that you personally like? Just to have some options

my resume has a flat list
operating systems: windows (XP through 7), ubuntu (8.04 through 14.04)
a list of programming languages, that sort of thing
TBH its more for keyword hits than anything else
with your "other" section, you may want to mention more about the side projects

So your approach favors brevity over detail in other words

my details are focused more in what i did in particular job roles rather than the tech stack
most of my jobs involve wearing multiple hats and doing a lot of different stuff, so it grows pretty quick
for the side projects, do you have stats on how your DB performs?
like "DB supports a website with X hits per day" or "DB handles Y transaction volume"

Yeah I have stats and things like that, it's even up on Code Review, the main SE site I participate in :)

@Phrancis cool

One more question, on the CV/résumé do you think I should list technology experience before career experience, since it is tailored to internal technology?

the numbers help demonstrate your expertise,
@Phrancis I've almost always seen the technology section come before the career section

OK - You've been very helpful @MattGiltaji @enderland Wish me luck :D

if you have stats or awards about your experience as phone support, be sure to plug those too
I've even seen a resume with testimonials on it
granted, that was for a more leadership position, but it was interesting nonetheless
good luck @Phrancis!

Yes I have awards and accomplishments and all sorts of good stuff. Do you think those should be separate from career experience or embedded within it?

8:56 PM
@Phrancis whatever flows better
if you have only a few, highlighting them separately can make them pop
if you have awards in each role, embedding them is better
you'll probably want to make it one of the first bullets or sentences when explaining what happened in the role
> Phone Support rep in dept XYZ

I've had about 1-2 per role (4 roles total) so I think I'll keep them embedded, but find some way to make them stand out

> 5/5 stars from customer feedback surveys 2013-2014 or w/e

Break time!

Bold can work, first bullet helps as well
