@gnat yeah I kinda enjoy it too, for the same reason

3:50 AM
@JimG. Please do not ever ping me again... I can not recall you ever saying anything I agree with or dont think is stupid
@gnat I agree with mods not deleting meh... but I think they should be more agressive with the blatantly .!.. to your standards and rules answers.

@Chad yeah the FAQ changes destroyed the "how you should post" on Workplace :)

Though with the new help it appears we no longer have a back it up policy... not that it was being enforced in the last 5 or 6 months anyway

its hard too since "back it up" on a relatively subjective site is hard
I'd prefer more the "why?" rule - if your answer doens't explain why, it's not good

Actually it was very simple. you just had to explain the why.

oh, so I guess I agree :)

3:59 AM
We would tell people they needed to explain why and they would say screw you its my opiniion
and that is where the Mods should have been stepping in and laying the smack down
if it is just a few users saying that it becomes a personal feud where it could have been corrected

@Chad I just got "reversal" for the brainsizing question, lol. kinda ironic

@enderland ?

Provided answer of +20 score to a question of -5 score. This badge can be awarded multiple times.

I could undownvote the stupid question and take it away from you :p

I don't think you can take away badges
it looks like that Q will get deleted again

4:07 AM
I hope so...

idk. I really think it's a beneficial question... :(

I am not against that question asked properly
so reword the question and make it good
take all the rep that goes with it

@Chad meh I don't even care about rep

4:27 AM
@Chad I think my problem with seeing "Back it up" as "add the why?" is that I naturally put the "why" in all my answers and never really considered that it is something specific which is the same as "back it up"

8:30 AM
@RhysW Did you want to have a blast editing that status email question mate?

8:42 AM
@MichaelGrubey im not sure, i think the OP's use of English is key to understanding why he is having his issues, if i clear his grammer and english im not sure if it still highlights that point

@RhysW I feel for him as its a really tricky position to be in...what ticks me off is he was hired and they would have been able to see this before hand. Shocking times....Just don't want it to be closed.

@MichaelGrubey yeah it shouldnt be closed, but i think thats one of the ones where its going to be difficult to get through to him
his english is the problem, everyone is telling him, including his boss and himself yet he refuses to accept that its the problem

9:25 AM
someone must have gone crazy voting yesterday, came on to 4 new badges today

1:30 FINISH ON A FRIDAY...TO THE PUB!!!! Have a good weekend guys!

12:41 PM
@MichaelGrubey you lucky bugga! Enjoy your afternoon!
@enderland have you ever worked for a start-up?

@RhysW nope
I've had a ton of people tell me they think I will start my own company, though

@enderland hehe, ever thought about doing it?

@RhysW we'll see, I have a pretty low tolerance for BS in some regards

@enderland you dont have to run it yourself though, plenty of people invest in startups

@RhysW one of the reasons I am working for my current company is that I have the ability to learn a lot of wisdom from people who have been working for 30+ years, this is an opportunity which is quite difficult in startups
though you learn different things there, I suspect

12:56 PM
@enderland i imagine some skills would be vastly different too
e.g communication suddenly becomes magnified by a thousand when you are in charge of the company

1:11 PM
@enderland can i ask you something about this vanguard thing quickly?

sure
can't say I can for sure know the answer but I'll try my best ;)

i dont need to know actual numbers of what youve put in or anything, but i was wondering what sort of percentage increase/return you were seeing on average yearly?

I'm not sure, to be honest, but the money I have in there is in there somewhat long term - probably 20-30 years at least, so it's not as important
I do know the past 6 months have been quite good for the US stock market

mm ive read that its on the rise recently
@enderland ah right, because all of MMM's figures seem to assume 7% and i was just wondering if that was actually reflected in reality or not

one thing to think about is the timeframe you want to use the money in - if it's short term (perhaps less than 5 years) putting it into a lot of risk can be dangerous, and the market tends to be pretty risky
I think the stock market has returned roughly 12% in the USA since like 1920 or something absurdly long ago

1:16 PM
@enderland might be a silly question but surely its still equally risky even when long term?

@RhysW it is, there's the possiblity all my retirement types of accounts will have 0% return 20 years from now
generally people assume the market will continue to go up for the long term

and vanguard is baically investing of the market instead of the individual stocks?

yeah
that's the general idea between indexes, you just track the overall market
I kinda figure, I think society will continue to create value and do better, which (in my opinion) means the market will trend upwards somewhat

yeah, plus the small ones that fail, generally get removed from the market, and all the good ones are left, which really should = an increase overall

2:00 PM
guh, just took apart and cleaned my keyboard and forgot where all the keys went

3:33 PM
Hey guys...coming from ServerFault I carefully read your Help page but wanted to ask here since my question is borderline and see if it is considered on-topic or not. The question is "Coming from a Network Engineering background, what types of certifications/training should an IT Manager concern themselves with?"

that might be considered too opinionated
as the answers are likely to be very specific to your exact goals and situation
@enderland is usually better than I at identifying these edge cases though

@TheCleaner are you asking, "how can I become an IT Manager"
or "how important are trainings/certifications to a manager?"

or 'i am a manager what training will make me better at it?'

I think if you are asking, "I want to be XXX, what should I do to get there" it'd be hard to not end up closed because it's more speciifc "help me please!" advice

No...I am one now...I'm looking at things like BPM, ITIL, CISSP, etc. to help me better understand how large company IT shops properly do things from a biz perspective not an admin/tech perspective.

3:37 PM
but I actually think the idea of how important certifications/training is to management positions
would be good, because often times management gets REALLY disillusioned about what their actual workers do

@RhysW correct...
Like PMI courses, etc.

generally, you want some knowledge on the topic of the people you are managing, e.g if they are software dev's learning a bit about it will help you vastly. if they are fast food workers, then know how they have to do their jobs,
but from a biz perspective

@TheCleaner asking "tell me what training I should do to be X" is a question which gets closed on here a fair bit because generally it's hard to answer in a way which is relevant to other people

I have the tech side down...been in IT for about 15 years...looking for more of the biz side now.

@TheCleaner nah it's better when people don't know how to do project management ;)

3:42 PM
So framing it as "What types of training/certifications should an IT manager acquire to better understand the business management side of an organization?" would get closed? I'm cool with that...just wanted to check first.

@TheCleaner one of the interesting things about sites like this are how subtle some differences can be between questions

i think it would remain open if we word it differently, to encourage people into giving the answers you want without thinking its off topic

e.g

"How can i ensure my management skills are on par from a business perspective"

then in the body of the question ask what types of training would enable you to do this, etc
does that sound about right to you @enderland ?

woops edited instead of replying somehow, sorry
@TheCleaner TheCleaner one of the interesting things about sites like this are how subtle some differences can be between questions
@TheCleaner I would think so, yeah, but, if you would rephrase it to be a bit more like "how important is training/certification for a technical manager related to the business side of an organiztion?" imo you are asking nearly the same thing but it's suddenly a lot more useful to future people

gotcha...so maybe "How important is training/certification for a technical manager related to the business side of an organization and what can be done to improve those skills to better contribute to the business goals?" that way it helps bring in suggestions as well as "yeah it's important..."
@enderland yep, same on SF...didn't want to come here and be the newbie we don't like over there. :)

@TheCleaner we get a lot of questions which are basically "tell me what I should do in this situatino" a la "Dear Workplace"

4:18 PM
hmmm the owner deleted that question afte rI asked for clarification, inteeresting

4:30 PM
im surprised that my comment on workplace.stackexchange.com/q/13738/5305 wasnt reported for being rude, i really dont know where that line is and if i crossed it or not
@TheCleaner nice, you asked that perfectly, that will be a popular question now, i have no doubts about it, people will just eat up a question about a manager wanting to do better
