3:54 AM
Dude, playing custom maps with 100% knockback resistance armor is awesome

8 hours later…
11:51 AM
That's pretty cool

12:11 PM
@Ieuan does it actually work?

@Jochem No idea
Just found it on reddit

ah

I have to say, I'm pretty excited for the reset :)

12:50 PM
@Jochem We all are
Starting over is always nice

1:29 PM
@Jochem I am too, and for a smaller / lighter pack. This was fun but there was just way too much crap in it
@Jochem Yeah. You just need the right color crafting terminal (top), then 4 facade
So you'd need the yellow cable
Well, 5 facade, you'd put it on all 4 sides and the top, then put the terminal on top (it will sink into the facade)
If you put storage buses on either side with diamond chests, you get an 'advanced' crafting table.

1:47 PM
ohhey, I thought that was a crafting table facade. that's pretty clever honestly

2:03 PM
grrr, microblocks don't work filling in holes from essentia tubes.

2:38 PM
Those are a pretty cool / cheap way of getting around. Balanced a bit more

1 hour later…
3:46 PM
Nearly automated, but still have to use golems :(
Get the essence / stuff you need out of the ME terminal (has a view cell for conveinence)
Put the essence in the iron chest, feeds 7 furnaces
furnaces fill up the jars
(golems move them to the altar)
When done, open the valve near the altar to re-crystalize any leftovers
or, open the valve above the jars if you decide you don't need something you put in one

4:02 PM
So, morph mod. We all wanted it to fly and be fire proof. What's an easier early-game flight mechanic than extra utilities wings?

4:34 PM
Extra utilities (I think) hanggliders?
They're some sticks and string IIRC and with a nice tower set up you can go far

Mmmm, could work, not exactly creative style flight though.
There's the finder mod that enables it client side if the server allows it, so folks can install that if they wish.
We'll just 'allow flying' and you figure out how to do it kinda thing
I miss that mod, very handy for locating drops
Or chests when flying over extreme hills biomes

4:56 PM

Q: How can I seal the holes my essentia tubes created?

Tim PostI'm in the process of automating essentia delivery to my infusion altar, and I built something that lets me dump crystallized essence into a chest to be converted into essentia and put into warded jars. My problem is, I need to seal up the vis tubes, so drops don't fall into the utility room ...

5:29 PM
Oh AE2 I thought we were friends. Just sayin'
Import and export buses stopped working all of a sudden :/

user43095
Is that fixed in the latest build?

Not that I know of, I'm setting up forge for 1.7 in the vanilla launcher to test a whole bunch of stuff
It happened in 1.7.2 also, whenever the amount of storage you have went over 80%, if more than 10 64K drives.
I just couldn't repro it reliably enough to report it
Buses stop working is one bug, buses stop working when you have a shitload of stuff is another.
20 out of my 30 64k drives are red

user43095
@TimPost Make a couple DSUs (or spawn them in, things like that are trivial at this point).

user43095
There was a mod that had these multiblock storage boxes or something, would be pretty cool if we slapped a storage bus on it. Can't remember what it was though; think I first saw it on reddit

Well, for testing, I got rid of everything in my system that was 10 or fewer (consolidating types), that helped, now it happens far less frequently, but it does still happen.
So it seems to directly correlate to how much stuff the system has in it
And, how many different types

user43095
5:39 PM
It's pretty intensive to scan your whole hard drive for a file when you have a lot of logs and backups and whatnot

Well, yeah, but AE2 drives aren't rotating media, they're nested arrays accessed with a pretty optimized breadth-first algorithm.
Oh, you mean that might actually be by design?

user43095
Doubt it, the mod would be flamed pretty hard by endgamers

I'm going to play around with it (since I am pretty much endgame)

user43095
Could look through the codes if it's on github

5:47 PM
It is. There's some code algo shoved in there to support extra cells that hasn't been touched in a while

user43095
Does that mimic real life SSDs?

scratch that, I'm looking at a branch I made a while back. D'oh
@JeffreyLin Ehh, some. Random writes etc can be problematic, but Intel SSDs have pretty much figured that out (AFAIK)
The samsung 840 series of SSD (in my W530 lenovo laptop) also has no real issues with write / read timing.

@JeffreyLin we had that on the server I ran, it was in Monster... was it crate-something?

Better Storage, I think it was
Ayup

5:54 PM
@Jochem Can you get it into the spreadsheet if it's not there currently?

@TimPost done
it's a nice early game storage method, and a really nice "I only have 1 of these things" storage system for AE
ohyeah, it had backpacks too

Hmmm, not sure if I should suggest ProjectE or not

user43095
Ooh

user43095
Which one is better, ProjectE or EE3?

@TimPost Telepads look cool

6:03 PM
Yeah, I'm glad to see them working again, and some UX issues fixed :)

@JeffreyLin not comparable, completely different.

@TimPost I'd say keep extrautils, disable morph flight, fireproof is alright but the flying from morph as soon as you get a bat is too much if you ask me

ProjectE is basically a done clone of EE2, EE3 is an entirely new thing

We could also go back to jetpacks and hanggliders

user43095
@KevinvanderVelden EE2 was a mess. OP as hell. I'd say EE3

6:04 PM
@Ieuan That's what I was thinking. On the other hand, every single person playing this pack knows how to play the goddamn game. Let's see if we can find an alternate (early-game) flight mechanic.

@JeffreyLin isn't done

user43095
@KevinvanderVelden It semi-works though right?

And I was mostly joking for the record

@TimPost Yeah I'd say jetpacks, you can make a cheap one early and then upgrade it later
Jetpacks + hang gliders are cheap and easy but fall off later on

@JeffreyLin the test version running on forgecraft has alchemical bags, ooh and breaking stuff down

6:06 PM
Regarding IC2 - We're going to need to include it. If you want great armor and hate magic, it's your only option.

Redstone Aresnal.

Unless y'all liked clicking on ants

/discussion

@TimPost Ender flux armor is pretty great
Or w/e it's called
Redstone flux?

user43095
I honestly think it's not too OP if you tweak the values a bit, if I want 100 diamonds I'm going to get them. It's only a question of whether I get them in five seconds or five hours.

6:07 PM
@Unionhawk Psh, quantum armor kills anything that has.

@JeffreyLin still talking about EE?

Quantum armor is annoying because it requires touching IC2

user43095
@KevinvanderVelden Guess it's a definite no then?

@JeffreyLin no, I just wanted to know the context

Tbh I'd say the fact that IC2 is horribly outdated is enough to not add it

6:08 PM
You can enchant redstone flux stuff to prot whatever the max is

user43095
How is IC2 outdated?

@JeffreyLin Look at the UIs

user43095
I'd even suggest GT, although that's enough to make some people rip their hair out.

And how compatible it is with the standard stuff like RF now
@JeffreyLin GT just adds an awful lot of grinding most of us don't have time for

user43095
You could say that BC is a tad outdated as well.

6:10 PM
@JeffreyLin I'd suggest a mod that just does if(playerName=JeffreyLin) player.kill(); if you suggest that

I'd say add GT if we disable half the nerfs it adds

Not saying it's not but at least BC >tries< to keep up

Or just a command block on a clock that's just /kill JeffreyLin

@Unionhawk Playername is void, server is crash :(

@Ieuan shh

6:10 PM
@Unionhawk Ok

@JeffreyLin Did you fall down and bump your heads?

user43095
What do we use in BC anyway? The quarry? I used the filler once because I screwed up while quarrying.

You understand the point, don't try to ruin it with your actual implementation stuff

@JeffreyLin logistics pipes

@TimPost Jeffrey has multiple heads?

6:11 PM
Also robots are cool

@JeffreyLin frame quarries. Redstone engines (to some extent), robots, pumps

user43095
@TimPost Oh yes, the redstone engines.

No not redstone engines get the hell out of here

Also a very cool way to handle redstone
(gates, etc)

BC has it's uses, IC2 only has uses for it's own stuff

6:13 PM
BC is pretty much a staple.

@Ieuan Pretty much this

user43095
I feel like BC's pump is in some ways superior to ExU's since it doesn't have to be exactly above the liquid.

We could add iguana tweaks for the leveling (and disable the nerfing, or not, I kinda like the nerf)

@JeffreyLin BC pump is nice
@KevinvanderVelden What's nerfed by iguana tweaks?

@JeffreyLin The enderthermic pump is designed for nether lava stuff

6:14 PM
It's one of the mods I feel GregTech could be but horribly failed at

@Ieuan every other tool ever

That is all it is designed for

Like it actually adds progression where GregTech just adds a lot of grinding

IC2 sucks because it insists on using a power system that is now incompatible with every other mod in the freaking game

Yes

6:14 PM
You basically can't mine with vanilla tools

Other than that, I have no issues with it
RedNet power cables solve it to some extent. We should also toss in power converters

@KevinvanderVelden What about stuff like wrenches and Thaumcraft tools?

@Ieuan should work

You can fill a few MFSUs from an EnderIO capacitor bank relatively quickly using a few rednet cables

@KevinvanderVelden So just vanilla tools, the kind that is literally useless in FTB, don't work?

6:16 PM
Um, no, TiCon tools too

@Ieuan yes, and you need to progress your tools

@TimPost You lose a bit and they max out very quickly, trying to run an induction furnace is barely possible from that

@TimPost context is iguana tweaks =p

@Ieuan Hence, power converters
We also have turbines from Railcraft

user43095
So, you need 1 solar, 1 cobble, an autonomous activator and an OpenBlocks block placer to max out your tools?

6:17 PM
@JeffreyLin Possibly

user43095
I remember how mining Forge Multiparts didn't use up durability but leveled up the tools

Extra mobs

user43095
@TimPost That's probably the best way to generate EU. Was going to make one for the workshop but we didn't have a constant supply of steel after we took out infernal mobs.

Can we turn off the 'sticky' bit on infernal mobs?
That's the only thing about them that made me rage

user43095
Also infernal withers = bad

user43095
6:20 PM
And better drops like diamonds or whatever

Mostly due to the sticky bit
@JeffreyLin That's easy

user43095
@TimPost Mostly due to the imma gonna destroy teh compat machines

Just don't steal my damn sword or wand

@JeffreyLin Wasn't that the sticky bit?

That was the sticky bit
Okay, so someone has to check that out
If the yellow was lower, I'd have just built WinAmp in Minecraft.

6:22 PM
@TimPost Make some more cells lol

Nope. Seriously, if I need more than 30 64k drives, I'm playing the game wrong (which I am, I have millions of potatoes, charcoal, etc that I'm not using)
I should set up boilers to make use of it
and coke ovens
I'm just too goddamn lazy

user43095
You can't put charcoal in coke ovens.

When did that happen?
You could in 1.7.2

user43095
coal/logs -> coke coal/charcoal

user43095
Charcoal?

6:25 PM
@TimPost I'll make you 50 more

You could put charcoal in a coke oven and get coke out.
and creosote

user43095
what that's hax.

user43095
At least I don't think it works

@JeffreyLin The only item output used to be coke

If by "that's hax" you mean "I had no impetus to even try that, because it sounds crazy to me"

user43095
6:27 PM
At least, I never saw that in NEI

@JeffreyLin I don't think NEI existed back then lol

If we all get together and go on a road trip, @JeffreyLin is in charge of all maps.
@Ieuan TMI did.

@TimPost True

user43095
@TimPost Hey I navigated the family car from New York to Maryland. Granted Google Maps screwed us over once or twice or maybe ten times but I still got us there :P

That's actually harder than one might think. "Take I-95 they said, It goes straight south, they said .."

user43095
6:31 PM
Keep left to avoid the fork that will occur 46 miles from now which may completely screw you over.

And keep doing that until you pass every state but Maryland with a beltway.

user43095
Wait wait wait didn't we just make a large loop-de-loop?

And then there you are, somewhere on the Jersey turnpike, saying words your mother never intended you to say.

And then google maps or some proper satnav gets you back home

user43095
After taking the longest way possible to avoid traffic, which occurs anyway because rush hour.

6:48 PM
I think we've unanimously agreed, we don't want cars in this modpack.

user43095
Or anything Google

@JeffreyLin It's even worse when you're in Maryland and want to go to (wait for it .. ) anywhere in Maryland.

We could also remove anything that adds flight and go with some form of alternative transportation instead

(I am from Baltimore, originally)

user43095
@Ieuan Super laggy train go!

6:49 PM
CHOO CHOO!

@JeffreyLin Yes that would be awesome
What about helicopters?

Yeahnope

user43095
@TimPost Half of Baltimore is the tourist side and the other half is the seedy side lol

Let's do something different and just build a Flan's and MCHeli modpack instead

user43095
MMPS adds flight, but I'm not sure if they have a 1.7.10 version

6:50 PM
Freakin CrackPack season whatever

@JeffreyLin Stay out of .. yeah actually 1/3 of it is the tourist side and the rest is hell.

We could also do something somewhat PVP
Add guns and planes and forcefields, try to protect a base

> official
That isn't official.

user43095
Then we need to add the ICBM mod

@Unionhawk It's technic pack lol
99% 11 year olds

6:51 PM
It may be the same mods, but not official
Fucking technic pack

@JeffreyLin It used to be that South Baltimore, Dundalk and Essex were the city's armpit. Lately everything just grows hair and sweats.

Why do they let anyone build a modpack
And then come to us when someone's Technic Pack modpack doesn't work

@Unionhawk The idea is good if you have permission and a stable download source and shit

Fajkhfjlsadhyg.ljasehghasdgh;lsidhg;lasikdgh

That's just rarely the case

6:52 PM
Dundalk and Essex technically being counties, but you really can't tell that by entering them.

> The mod pack is off line can u fix it?

@Unionhawk Pretty much the only downside of technic is that you have to host it yourself
@TimPost did you get solder set up somewhere?
I wanna check it out

What
The fuck?

@Unionhawk ?

@Unionhawk YES, THE FUCK IS NOW UPON US. ARE YOU READY?

6:55 PM
...

Psh he's still wearing pants.

...
wat

42

user43095
22 hours ago, by Unionhawk
Are you two trying to be flagged?

What are we talking about

6:56 PM
PANTS

Would be cool if @TimPost got banned from stackexchange for being mentally unstable

user43095
I just realized something stupid about cloudatcost

@Ieuan I'm a manager here at Stack Exchange.

user43095
Costs $19 for most basic, $35 for second teir

@TimPost That's why it would be cool

user43095
6:58 PM
But if you upgrade to second from first it still costs $35

@JeffreyLin That's how they make money
Gradual upgrades f you in the a

user43095
So why the hell would you upgrade from the $19 to the $35 for $54 when you can have two servers for $54?

It's the overselling principle.

Banning moderators requires removal of moderator status. (yes I have seen that happen). Banning @TimPost would require... well...

@Unionhawk removing stackexchange status?

6:59 PM
Yes

@Unionhawk Pretty much an act of God. I have dev access.

Oh, well then

@TimPost Can you hire people?

Yes.

They'd basically have to assassinate you first in that case

user43095
7:00 PM
Ooh ooh hire me!

Cuz I know a guy who'd work hard for little money

(I'm sure Stack Exchange has the resources to hire assassins if it came to that)

If he could pass our 4 - 5 interviews (mandatory) then yes.

user43095
Aw

@Unionhawk Turns out, assassins are kind of like designers, they just flake out.

7:01 PM
@TimPost I could probably pass the first, would that be good enough?

I have to go resurrect my web skillz and C skillz
Gotta get that monitoring daemon running, fortunately I have most of the code for that, I just have to go back and understand what I was actually doing with it

@TimPost Send it to me if you can't be bothered to go through it

user43095
Oh good, that should mean that I'll be able to understand it --- what

Your code magic level is not high enough
Neither is mine, to be fair

7:15 PM
Wat? You can't C what I'm doing? :P
I'm a systems programmer :P I write file systems, web servers, kernel modules, etc.

Are horrible jokes a reason for ban from SE?

No

Nope. They just get you fired for a day or two

user43095
The only thing I can do is bash my head against the wall.

@TimPost I mean, if I wanted to I probably could
Oh, that reminds me, I need to reply to my professor (I got a personal offer to be a TA for the 300 level CPS class I'm taking now)

7:18 PM
@Unionhawk If you're not behind then do it
Or if you plan to be behind and need a good excuse

Oh god wait, this will be the first semester that the kids will be coming in without having taken C++ classes before
Hmm
Well, that's probably fine

user43095
@Unionhawk o/

(they switched the first two algorithms and programming classes to Java)

They all 'know' java, what could go wrong?

(before it was C++)

7:19 PM
I think I know what a template does. Can I help?

@TimPost I basically have an A+ in this class, and have inadvertently destroyed everyone else in the process, so...

user43095
(My excuse is that everything I know how to do is self-taught and have never been taught how to properly code)

@JeffreyLin That's .. why you'll probably get a good job and be happy.

@TimPost I'm in the same boat and no-one wants t ohire me because I didn't finish any education

Yeah, the ability to learn code on the fly is just amazing

7:21 PM
So they don't trust my project finishing ability

But, at the same time, this
is how I imagine @JeffreyLin's code

@Ieuan bollocks, you're applying at the wrong companies. But you need to have shipped stuff in lieu of that.

Though to be fair, that's my code a lot of the time.
So messy

@TimPost Working on some stuff

@Ieuan SHIP IT.

7:22 PM
My PHP code is amazing and super clean
Please don't kill me

Mine is too.

PHP scares me

I mean, at least my code is indented right :"D?

As it probably should

It's like cracking your knuckles before you move on to real programming.

7:22 PM
I know Java too
59 secs ago, by Ieuan
Please don't kill me

I'm excited, I actually have a coding job this summer. That should be interesting.

Most of my job was "write lots of stuff in C or Python" then "We need something in PHP so we can actually use it"

Heh

I'd love to just start at the bottom at a random IT or dev department in a big company
Do the dirty work while getting some corporate experience
Would be hell to work in but at least I'd be working and learning
But yeah good luck getting hired in corporate without a CS degree

@Ieuan Wrong outlook

7:24 PM
@TimPost Why?

Any interviewer worth their salt is going to see if you're looking for a stepping stone

I'm not sure what exactly I'll be doing, since they aren't putting me on the huge flagship project (it's too large in scope to understand in 3 months), but I do know that it'll be some coding work, and not PC Tech stuff

True

user43095
My CS class next year is going to teach us how to python and terminal and stuff, but I don't see python being used that often in a productive environment.

Idk, I mostly just feel like I need to start over and use my current experience to kickstart that
I know I'm a pretty good programmer but my code right now isn't worth anything because it's dirty and chaotic

7:26 PM
@JeffreyLin Python is interesting and fun and everyone should learn it.

@Ieuan Big difference between "I'll do this to get in" and "I want to do this because I know a lot about it, and I want to see what it's like for a while, even though I could possibly interview for better things"

And it is used in some things
(my partner in this class I'm taking now didn't know python, so I basically had to rebuild one of the projects I had started on in C++)

user43095
Wonder if I should spend the summer learning python to get a head start

Plus, if you can do Python, you can probably do Lua, and therefore, ComputerCraft
Or vice versa

@JeffreyLin No reason not to

user43095
7:28 PM
I mean, I probably already have a slight one since I know how terminals work.

SE has really good benefits and even better perks. I meet accomplished programmers that would be happy to mop floors just to get in, and I (unfortunately) can't hire them. I need to hire someone passionate about the job at hand, overqualified isn't a deal breaker, but I need to know why you want the job.

Python is also easy to self-teach

@TimPost So having a passion for programming and always wanting to learn more and get better would be good motivation?

user43095
@Ieuan I thought that was rule one of anything in life.

@Ieuan Yep. I've voted to hire community managers that .. were great programmers but wanted to learn community management and showed an aptitude for it.
Heck I've got 20k+ on Stack Overflow and I'm not a core dev.

7:31 PM
Damn why aren't all companies ran by you

What most companies want to avoid is sort of like the tourist visa thing - they want some assurance that you won't just get hired and try to do something else quickly.
I was really clear when I came on here, programming has to be a hobby for me again, because if it isn't, I lost the love of my life (10 years of death marches)
Don't be a programmer that is suddenly interested in punching holes in looseleaf.
Nobody hires that.

Well I started as programming just to get a simple website up for me and a couple friends to post messages on and keep track of homework, now I'm doing bigger stuff bit I'm pretty held back by having no experience in structured development

Anyway, on to write minecraftd :)

I'd love to just be programming 60 hours a week for the rest of my life

@Ieuan You need to do a project and ship it, get your name in some commit messages on some open source project, and set up your own garden
@Ieuan There needs to be a site about Ieuan where you do mad science.

7:36 PM
@TimPost Yeah working on that

Or talk about the mad science you want to do

Most of my programming is literally that
Just making the impossible happen in whatever way necessary
Kinda like I play Minecraft

You're articulate, get out there and write.

Not everything makes sense or works well but it does what I want it to do

That's .. the kinda shit you need to talk about.

7:37 PM
I tried to start a blog but I just removed it because it was embarrassing lol

</FreeAdviceFromASeniorHiringManagerAtStackExchange>

Yeah I'll get my website up asap

I'm just as someone mostly working with front-end stuff too bothered by the standard layouts everyone uses
I don't want a onepage fullscreen photo website
What exactly is the difference between stackoverflow and stackexchange btw?

@Ieuan Stack Exchange is a network of sites like Stack Overflow. Just smaller.
Stack Overflow started it all.
That's a tl;dr, the company went through quite a few changes between all of that.

7:40 PM
Alright
I'd guessed the opposite

@Ieuan Stack Exchange gets you answers to your questions quickly, and said answers are vetted by experts.
Just like SO.
Just .. generally .. more relaxed.
Check out worldbuilding.stackexchange.com
Or pets, or .. Christanity .. or aviation, etc

Basically an ask.com that works and isn't mostly people wondering if you can get pregnant from webcam sex or whether breathing in molten plastic is good for your health

It's StackOverflow except not necessarily about programming and coding and whatnot

And a healthy dash of puberty
Lack of effective moderation
and yeah, that's basically it

@TimPost Well, depending
Or are you trying to say that SO is too big for its own good and moderation suffers because of it?

user43095
8:06 PM
You see that on occasion.
