1:55 AM
updated the googlemap.

classy.

hopefully it ends up going somewhere useful
it's no wonder the map was acting up so much when i was trying to access it before though

2:21 AM
should be quick from now on.. had to rebuild the cache from scratch this run

i saw it was a little darker

11 hours later…
1:31 PM
=\.. i finished clearing out under my dome, but it's not showing on the updated map..
had to clear my cache out...

2:07 PM
~6000 blocks i cleared out one by one. this game is ridiculous.

2:43 PM
having those signs on that map is kind of distracting, especially since many of them seem to indicate underground features or features inside a building where they're all mashed together

@sjohnston Do you know Python?
I'm going to see if I can modify the python app to remove the signposts.

I have never worked with Python, although it's on my list of languages to spend some time with (along with about 15 others)

well i found the block that adds the markers, commented it out, and am re-running the script
I am not sure it will remove them without clearing out the cache
@sjohnston The markers are gone now.

that was speedy

I do what I can!

3:21 PM
5 new feed messages moved to Sandbox

3:42 PM
argh. ice looks DARKER than diamond blocks on the map, not lighter.
That's the opposite of what the actual image is.

maybe i should turn lighting off?
i may also not be using the standard texture pack, i just grabbed a random one i found online

Lighting wouldn't really matter much.
I didn't realize that wasn't the standard textures either; that might be why it looks different from what I remembered last night.
I really wish I could place water without worrying about the spillage.

yeah.. are you able to extract terrain.png from your minecraft.jar?
otherwise, i can do it after work.

hopefully imgur didn't recompress it or something weird

FIRE TEX!

3:53 PM
I just now realized those little thingies on the side of a workbench are supposed to be a saw and hammer and pliers

going to drop cache, remove lighting, and re-generate..
@Brant it did... terrain.png should be 512x512
can you email it? fosco@fosco.com

Mine's 256x256.

sure?... ok ill let it run then

Yeah... I think higher-res textures are kind of semi-supported
in that they work, but the behavior is completely undefined
I just checked minecraft.jar again, the stock terrain.png is definitely 256x256

ok. i guess the one i was using is double, and it just divides by 16 to get each texture

4:16 PM
ill be back after lunch

1 hour later…
5:37 PM
is it worth the time/effort to make the minecarts? I've had fun just doing castles and buildings, but that's getting old..

5:49 PM
@Brant Check it out when you get a chance (might need to clear cache).. colors are all different now.

6:08 PM
Yeah, they are.

6:32 PM
Oh sweet, who finished off the next part of the bridge?

I'm guessing it was @StrixVaria

user30
Well it's sweet as

user30
@Fosco, you won't be making your entrance hall any taller than it currently is right?

6:50 PM
@ThomasMcDonald entrance to which, the one with the sign saying it's my house?

user30
Yeah

@ThomasMcDonald Ok, no I don't think so.. what's up?

user30
@Fosco Just wondering what sort of space there is between there and the top of the hill... planning some future minecart routes

@ThomasMcDonald If need be, you can demolish whatever I've put together... I'm focusing on my crazy stone bridge/dome/etc

user30
Ah yes, I blew a little bit of space out underneath there yesterday with some TNT

6:55 PM
ok, yeah i don't mind, that can all go..

user30
(I was referring to your dome)

ohhhh ok i saw someone helped out, thanks!

user30
Are animals invulnerable again? I've set this one on fire at least 3 times now

i finished the immediate area last night and flattened everything
probably going to expand a few tiles more on the 2 sides that are built up

@ThomasMcDonald I finished up the next couple parts of the bridge. I would have kept going but I was too lazy to count where to put the base.

user30
7:04 PM
@StrixVaria It looks awesome. I made a start on the top arch but then decided that you were better to do it, it took me ages last time and I kept loosing my place

@ThomasMcDonald Haha ok I'll see what I can do. Maybe late tonight or tomorrow morning.

that bridge looks amazing at max zoom
is this like that thing in Alaska? .. a bridge to no-where? ;)

It'll go somewhere eventually
we just need to keep building until it hits a mountain

@StrixVaria Then drill through it and continue.

user30
7:33 PM
I reckon the next hill roughly the same height will be another 4-6 arches away

7:48 PM
Even if it's not quite tall enough we can always have a stairway going down at the far end

or build on to the mountain

8:14 PM
Man, that bridge looks even more awesome in first-person
I started building a bridge on another server without scouting ahead -- turns out I had (by accident) picked the longest span of continuous water in the area

lol

Took me a week of building to reach land :P

@ZoogieZork Join our server :)

I've got a hidden little underground lair in the server already :)
Haven't done much with it yet

I'm switching to above-ground projects from now on..

8:30 PM
Yeah, from now on I only work on projects that can be seen from SPACE!

:)

My bridge looks so boring compared to y'alls: lugatgt.org/content/minecraft/world-map
How did you plan out the arches?

@ThomasMcDonald Planned them out; I just copied his pattern. I think he based it on pixel-art of a circle

yesterday, by Thomas McDonald
@StrixVaria http://stupidname.org/files/misc/minecraft/voxelspheres/VoxelSphere53.png
^ I've seen this before and I still don't get it... there's got to be a better template.

Hmm

8:37 PM
I blew that up like crazy in paint
and turned on the grid
so I could see the separate pixels

There are a couple other suggestions for sphere plans on my question.

Q: What tools do you use to help you build structures?

ZoredacheWhen looking at Minecraft pictures I see that lots of build lots really neat structures. But I really wonder how they build some structures, are the using some external tool to help them plan. For example lets take the case of a simple sphere, dome, or arch. How do you figure out where the blo...

Hmm... that actually gives me an idea
I can probably use Octave to model some "interesting" surfaces

@Zoredache couple reading comprehension challenged answers on there too :)

Yes, if you have any suggestions about how I can improve the question to get better answers please edit it or tell me.

@ZoogieZork With my hovering pyramid dome thingie, I was thinking about having a cylinder from ground level that bloomed out to match the hovering shape..

8:52 PM
@Fosco Any idea how some of the Overviewer maps I see have switchable unlit/day/night?

I would guess they are rendering all 3 versions..
is it switching on the same page??

that's awesome.. must be a newer version?.. maybe the untested branch

I'm guessing it's one of the zillion forks on github :)

i have an answer on Programmers.SE that is +11 / -9
there should be a badge for that shit

8:57 PM
Wow

oops wrong channel..

3 hours later…
11:58 PM
Shoo, shoo, stoopid chicken
Away from the crops!
