Q: Was there a scriptural, halachic, rabbinical, or legal reason for Jewish involvement in the Civil Rights Movement?

Wad CheberIt is largely forgotten today, but when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other Civil Rights leaders put out the call for believers and clergy of all denominations to get involved in the Civil Rights Movement, Jews were drastically overrepresented in the response. The Jewish people were in the ...

@mevaqesh - Fair point. Let me work on it for a minute.
@mevaqesh - I think the question is now objectively answerable.
How is this off topic? I asked about Jewish scriptures, laws, and Halacha.
@MonicaCellio - I'm interested in whichever explanation is the most accurate and comprehensive, but I'm trying to balance that with the concerns raised in the comments.
@MonicaCellio I edited the title, but I'm at a loss as to how to best phrase the question.

Probably all will agree that according to torah fighting for civil rights is nothing compared to fighting against gay marriage

@hazoriz - Marriage equality*

@hazoriz I know better than to get into an argument about this subject, and I am aware that Jewish law opposes the idea, but the correct term is "marriage equality", not "gay marriage". The idea isn't to create a new kind of marriage, but to expand the existing form of marriage to everyone. Whether or not it is permissible in Judaism is a different matter, and I am not qualified to discuss it, nor am I interested in such a discussion. And since the recent Supreme Court ruling, marriage equality is now the law of the land.

@WadCheber I see you have more then 700 in English but i think that the clarification of the terms is political not actual
Shabos is coming soon so I will have to go

Political is actual in this case. Extremist Christians, Muslims, Mormons, and Jews might not like the idea, but the United States is supposed to have a secular government. This means that religious objections are largely irrelevant. The only thing that matters is equality. The LGBTQ community doesn't want special treatment, they want equal treatment. There isn't a new form of marriage, the old form of marriage has been expanded to include everyone.
@hazoriz - "The Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion... The United States is not a Christian nation any more than it is a Jewish or a Mohammedan nation."
- John Adams & Joel Barlow
That means that you can object to marriage equality, but you can't use religious arguments as an excuse to interfere with the way people live their lives. You don't have to like it, but if you're living in this country, you have to accept it as a legal fact.

If there is no morality then why not let adolts marry children even when they are under 14 (the minimum age of marriage in new York)

@hazoriz Straw man argument. Morality doesn't apply to what two consenting adults do in the privacy of their own homes.
Your morality isn't my morality. People who opposed Jews holding political offices claimed that morality forbade it.

I have no problem with opposing Jew holding political office if this is the law of the land

I am good friends with one of the couples who brought their case before the Supreme Court. These are decent, moral people. They have the right to enjoy the same provisions as everyone else.

11:05 PM
14 is not adolts and can get married
Can I enjoy marriage with a 12 year old girl?
How about 9?

@hazoriz And you have no right to stop them. I have been led to believe that Judaism does require that Jews abide by the laws of the land.
@hazoriz - Stop with the fallacies. The law is the law, and religious views have no place in legislation.

We must stop them, the flood was before Jews, sadom was before Jew , the 7 Noahid law are for everyone

If you don't like it, you are free to leave.

Thank you but in a democracy we decided by most votes so if I can effect some votes I am doing a good thing

@hazoriz Wrong. You don't get to tell other people how to live their lives. Your religion does not apply to me. I respect your right to object, but I won't let anyone tell me that their religion should restrict my freedom.
@hazoriz Votes don't change Supreme Court rulings.

11:10 PM
G-d had a lot to do with this country starting becouse that's what moat wanted

"The Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion... The United States is not a Christian nation any more than it is a Jewish or a Mohammedan nation."
- John Adams & Joel Barlow
This is our country, not your country or the evangelicals' country.

That is correct

"Ours" as in everyone's.

If most of the people will want to ban gay marriage it will be illegal

So a religion that not everyone believes in cannot decide the law.

11:11 PM
Ads tell people what to buy, I can tell people how to live

@hazoriz Fortunately, most people don't want to ban marriage equality.

Unfortunately

@hazoriz You can say whatever you want, but no one is obligated to listen.

I understand that

Many Germans supported the holocaust. Does that mean it was acceptable?
Of course not.
The difference is that marriage equality doesn't hurt you. It changes nothing about your life.

11:17 PM
It does affect my life very much, it seem even though Donald Trump does not need to listen but he is listening

I believe that people are entitled to do whatever they see fit, so long as they don't hurt or oppress other people. I'm not gay, but other people being gay has absolutely no effect on me or anyone else who isn't gay.
@hazoriz Were you forced to marry another man? No. It doesn't affect you at all.
You just seem to believe that you're entitled to keep other people from doing things you don't do yourself.
It's actually none of your business.
It is disappointing to see someone who should know how horrible discrimination is supporting discrimination.
I respect the fact that Jewish law is clear on this point, but that just means that Jews who choose to observe the law shouldn't marry people of the same gender. It doesn't entitle Jews to prevent other people from marrying people of the same gender.
Israel can ban marriage equality forever if the Israelis so choose. But the United States is founded on the principle of the separation of church and state. We can't allow religions to determine our laws.
And this is something that can't be changed by public voting. It is enshrined in the Constitution.

Holocaust was wrong not becouse of the discrimination but because of the killing, if somthing that does not bother you is leagal so adoltery should be legal, and insest (marrying your sister) and marring a child,
Sorry shabos is comming I got to go I will be back tomorrow knight b"n

11:37 PM
@hazoriz - You're still using straw man arguments. What you're saying is demonstrably false. And actually, adultery is legal. Consenting adults are entitled to do whatever they choose to do, so long as they don't hurt anyone else or interfere with other people's lives. Children are protected by law from pederasty. Incest is illegal in many places, whether or not it is actually harmful to anyone.
@hazoriz Enjoy your Shabbos. L'chaim!
