@vzn and what did you did there? Why stopped?

@EvilJS worked 4 yrs as undergrad. contributed to papers published in science, nature, neuron mags etc
sympathize with some of your criticisms/ complaints, its an "old problem" but arguably "insolvable" because its intrinsic to human nature... eg

1:40 AM
@vzn undergrad in? I thought you are quite CS & Math person with some indications that you did some Psy...

2:14 AM
@vzn don't be shy, bragg about it ;)

vzn
2:31 AM
@EvilJS lol not exactly the bragging type although maybe some of my blogs come close. dont have a whole lot to brag about. still not famous :( ... it was a medium size lab that worked on helisoma. great equipment at the time, nitrogen cooled CCD cameras, zeiss microscopes, top macintoshes. several phds, several grad students.
left for a few reasons. overt ones: (1) graduated (2) seemed like science was rather highly competitive and hard to make good money in. was hired by a phd who talked about "phds making minimum wage" and then asked him who it was, and he wouldnt tell. made nearly minimum wage myself for advanced coding work. before learning how to "negotiate" with potentially unfair managers. o_O
as for psychology, have studied some aspects of it extensively from independent research so to speak.

2:56 AM
So MsC in CS, Self-learned psychology?

@DavidRicherby I just spent an hour writing an answer to the Languages question, then found that it has been protected. Would you mind lifting it for a sec?

3:21 AM
@vzn BS and BSE differ? I am asking because my first grade diploma translation was BSE

vzn
3:36 AM
@EvilJS BSE= bachelors science/ engr? there is indeed a fairly strict std acceditation society ABET for engr degrees/ schools.

@vzn yes, Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Computer Science) lol, seems redundant

14 hours later…
5:30 PM
@vzn so you were after taking photos of cells?

vzn
6:06 PM
@EvilJS yes. we did calcium level imaging using dyes. it was already known calcium was a big deal, but calcium turns out to be a bigger deal than was realized at the time. this was probably over a decade before astrocyte signalling was discovered, which is revolutionary in the field. (they use calcium chgs.) ... still being investigated, not well understood the apparent signalling relationship between astrocytes and neurons.

Can I answer this? I am sometimes pushing the answers (or flooding this chat) with ideas not that much connected with CS. AI is inherently making assumptions about brain work, but the most of the time I read about NN (where not everything is known) in compare with human brain (where again not everything is known, but there are a lots of false statements or disproven conjectures).
So it seems like good idea to untangle such problems, but this is CS site. And when I get feedback I comply with it (or at least try or think that I do). So honest question and no hard feelings if somebody will point that I should not answer from non-CS pov, I will understand.
Any input would do yes/no/do not care/reason. Or maybe I should stage some anonymous poll? I do not mean only this particular question, more general MO...

@EvilJS just answer whatever youre interested/ knowledgeable in and seems within scope, and votes will guide you as to whether others agree, and individual Q/A are too small of a sample to make generalizations. that already has a 4v answer so its of significant interest to the group/ audience. personally think ML+AI is an extremely big deal for future of CS, but others may disagree. note also there are natural "voting coalitions" :)

@vzn Could you do me the favour of momentarily lifting the protection on this question? I had spent a lot of time writing my answer and just missed the opportunity to post it before it was protected.

@vzn thank you, but the part "is within a scope" is blurry, that is why I ask. ML, AI, and other concepts, yes, explaining fallacy of comparison to brain, IQ, test which was to tell apart children with problems and is wisdom based instead of intelligence based test - this is on the other side of this comparison.

@200_success hi welcome to the site, thx for the interest, saw your msg to DR. dont have that permission myself to adj "protection". sorry DR did not respond. suggest why dont you just start by getting a little score elsewhere and solving the problem yourself. anyway doesnt SE give you something like 100 just for joining this site? ah looking at your profile right now, sure enough you already have 105 on this site. so this is a nonproblem right? youre imagining things?

I am not presented with the button to post an answer.

vzn
@200_success dont know why. should be at bottom. take a look at other questions, the button is at the bottom, is it on other questions?

6:55 PM
All I see is the "protected" message at the bottom.

@200_success am surprised about this, but maybe the filter somehow knows you didnt "earn" 10 yet. try answering another question, all you need is another 5 points apparently(?) ... but fair warning, it looks like voters have lost any taste for any further answers on that question. its a hot network question and nearly )( closed already...

7:08 PM
@vzn maybe "earn" does not cover "granted"?

7:42 PM
OK, I'll pimp this answer to get above the threshold.

A: boolean search explained

200_successThe counting principle that applies here is inclusion-exclusion. $$ \left|X \cup Y\right| = \left|X\right| + \left|Y\right| - \left|X \cap Y \right|$$ To make the numbers work out, $\left|X \cap Y \right|$ must be 10000. A Venn diagram may be more convincing to someone who may be intimidated b...

@Evinda ghost me? :( was wondering, so do you understand GF arithmetic? looks like its crucial for the computation

1 hour later…
10:07 PM
@vzn Hi!!! I was doing some exercises in distribution theory...
@vzn I will look tomorrow at the links that you sent me

vzn
11:00 PM
@Evinda ok. are you gonna do a masters thesis? (cant remember if asked you that already)... ps thx for voting, back in black =)
