Q: Better guidance for our “belongs on Stack Overflow” close reason

GillesWe have a close reason that reads Questions about software development or programming tools are off-topic here, but can be asked on Stack Overflow. That's not as helpful as it could be. Moderators can and do migrate questions that are in a good enough state to stand on Stack Overflow (but w...

@Gilles The number of downvotes your internationalization post gets is depressing.

Are Turing Machines Transducers used? I mean transducer like in DFA not additional tape manually filled.

@Evil I haven't encountered them. Since TM models routinely include output (their tape content, or something similar) an emission model is not needed.
That said, some transition system models may be similar.

I have never seen something like this, but I try to finish simulator and it would be {deterministic, non-deterministic} x {normal, transducer} x {FSA, PDA, TM}. I cannot use jflap - it is too annoying to input more than a dozen of states...
@Raphael Thank you.

@Evil @Raphael What's unclear about cs.stackexchange.com/questions/64809/… ?
I'm not an algorithm guy, but I think I understand the question
like the asker says, the problem is not calculating an edit distance, it's finding the minimum edit distance between a fixed point and a bunch of other points
Ok, I don't completely understand the question: in what way is this an edit distance?

@Gilles it is "edit distance" and "not edit distance" in the same post and comment.
And of course it is not edit distance, so it gets even more confusing.

He defines distance as just absolute value difference between points. It sounds like he wants to find the permutation of B that minimzes the overall sum. it is very unclear.
Holy crap that guy was pissed his shit-question was closed. Insecure much

@NicholasMancuso how do you know? There are no comments, posts etc. (or maybe those are already deleted)?

8:57 PM
@Gilles My bad. I didn't read closely enough and thought the question was about the edit distance, in which case the answer is general reference. You are right, the question is clear aside from that.
I take that back. It's not clear at all. What is he minimizing over?

Well, if there are twice as many interpretations as readers then something is off...

@Raphael His terminology doesn't make sense to me but his formulas are mathematically well-defined

@Gilles Yea, the minimum of a number is defined. But it doesn't make much sense. Also, his examples are faulty. (See my comment there.)

Sigma over i, j looks like sum of n^2 distances between points, while OP probably wants to find such permutation that sum of pairwise distances (n) is minimal, right?

9:17 PM
@Evil Unclear. They never speak about permutations, and their examples do ... nothing.

Well, minimum of one number... So trying to match the examples leads to that idea, but IMNHO it should be explicit.

No OP doesn't speak about permutations, but his example is a mapping of sum_i d(a_i, b_pi(i))
we can guess that is what he means, but as stated the question is unclear
(or she)
(also my comments about the "shit-question" were about that number of bits/bus question that Raph closed)

Well, reverse engineering of the question - that is quite new.

@NicholasMancuso Oh, you mean BugHunterUK. Yea... did you see the chat followup?

9:47 PM
@Raphael Yeah--along with the reddit post. What a giant man baby. He threw a tantrum if I've ever seen one.

Technically it was not insecure. Moreover it is easy to see the magnitude of suffering. I know it is hard to stand and witness, but that person is already in deep trouble. Really deep. So let us change the subject in this case, ok?
