@random that looks awesome, I am now considering participating

4 hours later…
9:02 PM
Did the timeout on messages in the chat recently change.
I can't post a second message to the first like I used to without these annoying as hell "you must wait N seconds"
I'm not spamming, I just hit enter instead of SHIFT + ENTER and BAM my messages are now 10 seconds apart and broken up

I'm somewhat confused. Shift+enter makes a newline in your current message; enter sends the message. You won't get the error if you're pressing shift+enter between messages, because you haven't sent the message yet

yes I realize that
i'm saying
I hit it by accident and want to send my next sentence or code block
often I will onebox and item and want to give it a title afterwards but have to then wait 8-9 seconds
I'm wondering did this recently change? seems to be more of an issue recently than it did before

I don't think it's changed, but it does adjust each time. If you post 8 messages in a row, the mandatory time between them will start to go up
But just two messages back to back only need a second or two apart

@MarkTrapp oh no!
i was trying to be so nice and helpful to him, too :(

user2334
9:13 PM
He wants to know why Stack Overflow isn't set up like a forum with separate sub-fora for each main topic

oh! see you shoulda edited it to say that, @MarkTrapp
shame on you

user2334
I WAS WRITING MY ANSWER AND THEN IT GOT DELETED :(

user2334
I saw it like 1 minute before he deleted it

@MarkTrapp aarthi should undelete it :) modabuse

VOTE TO UNDELETE
THERE I UNDELETED
it already had two

9:17 PM
@Aarthi I don't have any votes on meta :P
just up and down

My whole meta experience changed when I unlocked left and right votes

:D
@MarkTrapp THERE. never say i didn't do things for you

user2334
ELEPHANT SHOES @AARTHI

user2334
now does anyone have a link to the blog post/MSO post where Facebook Stack Overflow was launched?

user2334

9:27 PM
@MarkTrapp you love me? d'awww

user2334
Alas, but only for your abuse of mod privileges.

user2334
j/k j/k you're all right

:D
THANKS MAN

meanwhile: so it looks like Reddit is getting curbstomped by feminist press again

user2334
Deserved if you ask me

user2334
9:36 PM
Reddit is one of the last mainstream websites where this is still the guiding principle

@MarkTrapp no, i completely agree
plus: CreepyShots is a horrifying experience
even just reading about it made me want to take several showers

user2334
And that's just the tip of the creepy iceberg. The mental gymnastics at least a subset of the Reddit community goes through to justify and defend the more ugh parts of the site is crazy

user2334
"It's totally okay to take creep shots of underage girls, but outting the worst perpetrator? A bridge too far"

not to mention the numerous jailbait subreddits
it's funny, but I was talking to a friend of mine about GoneWild and some of the other subreddits
it's kind of sad, really: they consistently reinforce the idea of light skin == beautiful, across all races and cultures. reddit is an international site (even if a huge portion of its userbase is US-based) yet the things that top the pages are always women who look exactly the same in most respects.

user2334
And ostensibly GW is supposed to be for all sexes, but the only things that get voted up are women or sexual acts involving women

9:45 PM
I would enjoy a version of reddit with slashdot's custom rating system
Where I could positively or negatively weight posts based on where the poster appears in my friend/blocked network

user2334
@Sparr You can do a lot of that with Reddit Enhancement Suite: it tracks a separate score for how many times you've up/down-voted someone, and can weigh people you're friends with more

user2334
I'd love to see community moderation a la Stack Exchange there. But that'd never ever happen

@MarkTrapp Isn't that why we have LadyBonersGW? (Which, incidentally, is way more diverse than GW, and it's not that diverse, either, though the content ranges from nudes to clothed figures.)

I can't read Reddit without RES anymore; I need the ability to block the 50k stupid novelty accounts

Novelty accounts?
(Lol I use tumblr not reddit, 'cause double-x-chromasomes)

9:47 PM
@MarkTrapp unfortunately RES can only utilize data Reddit sends to it. It can hide things I don't want to see, but it can't show me things I want to see that Reddit didn't send.

user2334
@Aarthi the 50 million people drawing sketches of the posts, like the guy who creates really bad water colors, or the guy who uses an Etch-a-Sketch

@MarkTrapp that sounds awful.

Those are by far the least ridiculous ones. There's at least 6 bots that do nothing but convert units in the post. If you mention "5 feet", it'll auto-reply and say "btw that's 1.5 meters"
I've seen posts with three separate replies from three separate bots, all doing the same convertions

@Aarthi there are reddit accounts named "whatsthatinmetric" and "picsofspiders" which post the obvious things. there are more creative ones, too. one guy writes fanfiction about your username. another explains math in jokes.

user2334
@MichaelMrozek Or the several bots who transcribe what the post was into the comments

9:49 PM
useful bots and novelty accounts aren't exactly the same thing, but they overlap

@MarkTrapp aren't those for the visually impaired?

user2334
The guy who creates a D&D character background for your username

wow, reddit sounds even worse than I thought.
I know some people thing the SRS subreddit is filled with crazies
but honestly, after seeing some of the worst of reddit...they don't look so insane

It's not bad if you stay on smaller subreddits. Once a subreddit hits a certain size it's useless

user2334
@Aarthi there's those, but then there are ones that transcribe links to Twitter

9:50 PM
@MarkTrapp also, RES doesn't know about OTHER people's votes. Slashdot allows me to apply weights to friends of friends, and foes, and friends of foes, and even people who have me marked as friend or foe

user2334
True

Slashdot became MUCH more useful, for finding information and discourse rather than just a place to read conversations, when I started using those features

There are a couple of subreddits like askscience where the mods are completely dictatorial, and those subreddits are amazing, and nobody on reddit can understand why

user2334
heh, yeah

@MichaelMrozek even if that's an effective model, it doesn't scale. 10 mods for a 1000 person subreddit is easy. 10000 mods for a 1000000 person subreddit is hard.

9:52 PM
but if a subreddit has that many people
probably 5% or fewer are really participating
the rest are passive watchers -- that's been true since the 90s

user2334
@Sparr You can scale pretty far if the mods actually do stuff and take their job seriously. SO has 3+ million users and only 20 mods

i mean participants, mostly
@MarkTrapp SO takes advantage of a lot of automated feedback and community filtering
more than slashdot, even

@MarkTrapp which: bananas when you put it that way

@MarkTrapp SO also lets users do a lot more. The number of times I've wanted an edit button on reddit posts is crazy
Reddit users can...flag. Not even with a message, just "this post is bad, somehow"

user2334
yeah, you have to private message the mods if you want to explain, which most of them want you do to, which is nuts

9:53 PM
reddit users can downvote, which will make the post disappear for other users IFF the post gets more downvotes than upvotes

@MarkTrapp what. are you serious? i'm NEVER being a mod over there.

user2334
Well the good news is you never have to pay attention to your inbox because if you ever act you're literally worse than Hitler

oh lord. Godwin's Law in that extreme, huh? :(
man, reddit is scary. people talk about tumblr's "social justice brigade," but frankly I find them more palatable. at least they're trying to change the world for the better, however misguided.

user2334
@Aarthi Oh man. Amidst the Gawker/creepshots scandal, I saw someone actually allude to "First they Came…"

@MarkTrapp seriously?! :<
persecution of jews != persecution of pedos
sorry not sorry

9:57 PM
@MichaelMrozek I never understood the appeal of Reddit until I found out if you registered you could unsubscribe from all the default subreddits

@mmyers It's a running joke that /r/atheism and /r/politics are in the default list to make people want to sign up and unsubscribe from them. I'm not sure it's a joke, really

@MichaelMrozek And /r/pics, and /r/(notactually)funny, and...

I don't think I've ever been to those

i guess i'll just never understand how reddit's admins can allow the worst of the network to persist, or even defend stuff like r/jailbait and r/jailbaitGW and r/creepyshots....

@MichaelMrozek I thought they were defaults
@Aarthi Their entire MO, as I understand it, is "Free speech at all costs!"

user2334
10:00 PM
misplaced priorities. They tried so hard to be Not Digg, this is what happens

Ugh.
Everything about this makes me unhappy.
This is why I hang out everywhere else.

user2334
You can't escape the taint! Any time someone creates a meta post of the ilk, "Why can't you let popular questions be?" that's Reddit talking

user2334
They've conditioned a large portion of the internet audience, particularly teenagers and young adults, that's how the world has to be

Oy vey. Kill me now.

@Aarthi where do you draw the line for jailbait? 20 is illegal some places. 18 more. 16 more. 14 more. It's odd to me that a meta-forum moderation team would pick an arbitrary line.

user2334
10:02 PM
18 is pretty much the cut-off everywhere for child pornography

The easy answer is: if they're still in government-mandated state education systems? they're too young
eh i rescind this one.

The age argument isn't nearly as popular as the "what constitutes jailbait" argument. Which I'm really hoping we don't reproduce here

ok

wasn't gonna
i hate those arguments, too

anyway, I agree that reddit is a lot more palatable if you ditch most/all of the default subreddits
sometimes it amuses me how little technological quirks affect our impression of things

10:06 PM
I don't even follow /r/programming anymore; I used to live on that one

if it was subreddit.reddit.com instead of reddit.com/r/subreddit, would people infer less connection between subreddits?

@MichaelMrozek I followed r/aww for a while but meh i'm pretty much over it at this point

many people make comments about reddit as a whole... but rarely do you hear the same about other meta-forums with less cros-pollination despite still running on the same hardware and software
like stackexchange :)

both true and untrue

People talking about Programmers bitch about "Stack Exchange" all the time, but those people are usually on reddit so I ignore them

10:08 PM
@Sparr What ^^^ said. also, some people do connect SO and SE, so "mod issues" that arise on SO sometimes will be painted across the network

user2334
@Sparr They used to have that, along with full on domain linking, but very few subreddits used it, so they shut it down. As much as nobody wants to admit it, Reddit only really works due to cross-pollenation of subreddits

Frankly, it's a model borrowed from LiveJournal
and Usenet

Don't forget the reddit pitch forks @_@ (Imagine being at the end of it)

user2334
@MichaelMrozek Reddit (and to a certain extent, Hacker News) is the cause of much of the resurgence of problems after Programmers.SE launched out of beta

gotta run, i need to spend more time here. i wish there was an irc gateway to this chat system

10:10 PM
One day, @MarkTrapp, I want you to write a memoir about that first year and a half.

20
A: IRC access for the chat?

Greg Hewgillupdate: initial author isn't working on this anymore (last commit was 2010) As Andy E's head mentioned, I've started to create an IRC interface for the SO chat. The current state of the code is on Github: http://github.com/ghewgill/soirc It's all ugly, nascent, fragile code right now but I expe...

There was a nice timeline of Gaming's history for their anniversary; somebody should make one of those for PSE. It would be much more entertaining

user2334
@Aarthi I'll title it, "I came, I saw, I left"

@MarkTrapp I like it. But you should still write it.

@MarkTrapp I wonder who posted this
@MarkTrapp I think it's mandatory that all works of this type be titled "There and Back Again"

user2334
10:13 PM
The asker and the answerer are pretty predictable; I give the plot 2 stars out of 5

user2334
@MichaelMrozek "An Unexpected Journey… through the darkest bowels of Hell (as a programmer)"

ha.
i still think such a thing would be entertaining informative and interesting

user2334
no worries: documenting my experience as a moderator is on my bucket list somewhere above climb Mt. Everest but below try all microbreweries in Portland

aww
but.... grabby hands

@MarkTrapp mmm Portland Beer and Tillamook Cheese

user2334
10:24 PM
Tillamook Cheese is indeed delicious, but those jerks have doubled the price of cheese since I got here

bastards

other than having its own domain name, is stackoverflow distinct from the other stackexchange sites?

it's the flagship
it's the biggest distinction
it's also by and large the biggest site on our network
i believe it alone is like 50% of our traffic

code, features, etc

oh! from that perspective?

10:35 PM
oh, sure, it's where I have the most rep, I was just curious if it was not-fully-integrated

uh.

or if it remained a fork

oh it's totally integrated
i consider it part of the network now
but it does have a distinct identity outside of SE

And with that, g'night everyone :)
@MarkTrapp always a pleasure

I participate on SO/SE a lot less lately than before SE started, but I've just started participating more again
just discovered the review tab, and a few other features

user2334
10:37 PM
BYE @AARTHI I'LL MISS U

11:34 PM
@Sparr There's some stuff that's different or unique on SO compared to the other sites, but it runs on the same code, it's just site-specific settings
