(My regular readers are all busy and I want feed back :>)
It is rather quiet today...
Or at least when I'm here...

3:42 PM
lol ok

3:55 PM
Hello all
May the noise begin
I need @rlemon for something

@AmithKK that's what she said

Jan 14 at 7:16, by George Edison
Well, your implementation would look like this:
Just see that conversation please

so you want a userscript to exist on all pages, with an input box - you type the name of a pokemon and it returns the id?
@AmithKK and kdex or ndex

@rlemon Yeah... Not like every page
Like in a textbox you enter
[pid.kdex:Pikachu]
I just need a .. list or something of things to learn to make it :D

4:12 PM
where is the textbox?

Where you type in SE CHAT :D
Its just a POC Project
@rlemon Anyways, I have a question
Can Userscripts load parts of the DOM of another website onto the present website

not really.
however... one sec....

BBT

4:30 PM
or I can have them stored like pokedex[dec id] = {"name":"the name","hex":"the hex code"}

See, I was right.

about?

Aha! I was wrong!
1 hour ago, by Roland Taylor
Or at least when I'm here...
sigh... I was right...

4:48 PM
@MarcoCeppi how to I forward a domain to Odina?

5:19 PM
jsfiddle.net/rlemon/5hp5H/embedded/result and now i'm done with the neon.

can i have a plate of dinner for 5$ plus gratuity?

aww shit there goes my retirement...
dammit apple I was counting on you...

"it's going to be flat!"

it should sky rocket after todays announcement today though...
Good think I bout the controlling interest last month...

5:23 PM
certainly. it's a higher number after all!

after today, I won't have to worry about working another day of my life, after the announcement...

not 1, not 2, it's the ipad 3!
"GENIUS!"

nah it is going to be the iPad 2s...

2S+
2S+ 5G Pro

be the same thing they did with iPhone5... let the hype build... then announce the 4S

5:24 PM
with siri beta2

ubuntu release parties happen twice a year. all over the world. and they are much more impressing (like the actual product >:D).

Can you answer this? Writing a "Hello World" Device Driver for kernel 2.6 using Eclipse http://askubuntu.com/questions/63834/writing-a-hello-world-device-driver-for-kernel-2-6-using-eclipse #driver

6:19 PM
i couldn't resist and am watching a coverage of that apple thing. lot of bla bla about being "post pc", then comes this slide:

jrg
Just watch here:

 iPad announcement chat

Live chat during the iPad announcement

you could as well add a column for "sold bread"
no, i quit now

We're looking at Twitter on "a Samsung tablet" -- it's the Galaxy Tab. "It kind of looks like a blown-up smartphone app running on a tablet -- and that's exactly what it is!"

is there any progress on the review → close issue (showing already voted on questions)?
i'm so not happy with the way close votes in progress are handled. tools → close sucks because it shows stuff i voted on and it doesn't show the total number of votes (just for the selected timespan). review → close sucks because just opening the question removes it from the list, plus already voted on questions are showing up. all known, nothing happens.

jrg
6:37 PM
get to 20K and use the mod tools, those are nice.

you get more tools with 20k?
it would also help to know how you guys pick questions to insta-close, so we don't need to waste votes to "confirm" open closure votes.
e.g., if i make 24 questions go from 3 to 4 close votes, when you would normally go through all 3-votes questions, i would have wasted all my votes

jrg
Oh, no its just /review. I go through this frequently - askubuntu.com/review/…

note

jrg
although i'm noticing that a lot of questions never get there, so I think I'm going to start just going through everything.

i'd just love to see a list of all ongoing close votes, sorted by #votes, excluding questions i already voted on, and if the cake is free, being able to ignore questions that i think shouldn't be closed.
doesn't sound like an impossible task to me :P
the market is not amused :D

jrg
6:53 PM
This is one of the longest dist-upgrades i've ever done.
disk io is going to kill this poor thing...

is there a command to list all packages installed?

jrg
dpkg --get-selections > installed-packages.txt
or something like that

$sudo dpkg-query -Wf '${Installed-Size}t${Package}n' | sort -n |more
that is what i ran
ok. i like yours :P
output to a file

jrg
iPad event is boring, although I could almost see myself getting one of the new versions. Maybe.

@jrg yeah... it is underwhelming so far...

6:58 PM
i use dpkg --get-selections | grep -P "\tinstall$" | awk '{print $1}' | sort

jrg
@htorque that one is slightly more elegant.

many ways to do it
many ways to make mistakes :D
don't forget to save the auto/manual install marks!

huh?

if you use that list to reinstall a system i mean
all the packages would get marked as manually installed

nope, gonna review the list and try to write a script to remove the packages I don't need.

7:00 PM
in that case, nevermind :P

7:14 PM
ok this is going to sound stupid... but where do I copy the files to if my device is sdb1
sudo cp -R ~/file.txt /dev/sdb1 ???

-1
A: How to "roll up" the window?

Roland TaylorUse Ubuntu-Tweak to do this: For instructions on how to install Ubuntu-Tweak: How do I install Ubuntu-Tweak?

Clearly, I am stupid.

but i still no know?

@jrg or @TheX where did I go wrong in that answer?
I got a downvote and a comment - but I don't get the comment...

let me look

(If the comment made sense I could improve my answer, no prob).

jrg
7:21 PM
What..... i see nothing wrong.

me neither...

I guess I should take his advice next time then...
Makes certain to read before posting... as he always does :)
Thanks guys :P

@rlemon you need to mount it
via nautilus' automount or the mount command

@htorque ubuntu server. mount sdb1 ??
@RolandTaylor read my comment

mount /dev/sdb1 /to/some/directory/maybe/in/mnt/

jrg
7:28 PM
Youch, thats a little harsh there @rlemon, but if you're happy with it go for it. :)

it should be able to figure out the filesystem type, else you need to supply it with the -t switch, eg mount -t ext4 /dev/sdb1 /mnt/data (where /mnt/data/must exist)

@rlemon good catch!
Thanks bro, you deserve icecream or cookies or something :D

@jrg it's true though. these guys b*tch but they forget that a good answer is a good answer. don't downvote it because it's not helpful to you per-se. it will be helpful to a guy creeping the post with a similar yet slightly different problem.

jrg
True, but you can be polite about it. ;)

Well personally I didn't see it as impolite, but I guess I wouldn't cause I'm naturally a bit blunt/sharp :)

7:33 PM
@jrg that was the polite version.

jrg
Hey, just as an FYI, if you have a github account, go through and make sure your keys are A-OK. - github.com/settings/ssh/audit

Thanks to apple for the underwhelming product announcement today

Thanks to apple for the underwhelming products...

@rlemon lol

5mp "back cam", VGA front cam? really? :D

jrg
7:42 PM
Anyone ever done an Arch install to a USB stick?
I've only ever done it in VMs when I've needed a lightweight custom system for testing stuff.

@jrg I have never had very good luck with arch at all

@htorque my phone is the same except for no front cam....
5MP cam, records videos in QVGA...
I'm so impressed, I might go get an Apple from the fridge.

i imagine no front camera is better than watching 640*480 at 2048*1536 :D

@RolandTaylor will it blend?? apple sauce anyone?

7:46 PM
1.3MP front / 5MP rear

@TheX hahahaha
@rlemon so essentially they took my old phone and my current phone and stitched them to a retina display...

"rear", @rlemon thanks, that's the word i was looking for

boring.

\o @takkat

Hello all
Hi @htorque

7:48 PM
already ordered an ipad 3? :D

I have no iDevices (you don't get them for an apple and an I ;))

Q: How do I completely turn off screensaver and power-management?

TakkatIn previous releases I could set "Put display to sleep..." to Never in the power management settings. However since 11.10 in Screen settings the longest time span possible is 1 hour: As I am running 11.10 in Virtual Box I don't need a screensaver or power management (this is all done by the h...

i prefer a frühstücks i ;)

Does this need an update for 12.04?

@JorgeCastro in 12.04, the setting @Takkat misses, is there, so i don't know what to do?

7:51 PM
Yeah you can say never now...

Oh, so we can say "In 12.04 the option is present in the dropdown"

yeah. if you think it needs a screenshot:
added the info, removed my comment

good enough, high 5!

Which of these packages can I remove safely. I will be running this ubuntu server install completely from the CLI - needs to be BASIC BASIC BASIC

I woudld give you a bounty but you passed me!

7:55 PM
yeah, that's what i need. MORE rep i don't know what to do with. :D

ttf-dejavu-core can go

@rlemon Guess who has ordered quite a lot of Github stuff today. :D

if you find questions that need bounties, go ask me!

@htorque Send it my way. :P

ha, i don't think so. :P

7:56 PM
@htorque I try to keep 3 bounties going at all time

jrg
@OctavianDamiean Send it my way. :P

@OctavianDamiean what do you think of the revisions.. they all work - now just a matter of whether they are useful

@JorgeCastro you have what, over 100 bounties and over 15k rep spent? that's awesome!

Which branch are you talking about 1.1?

@OctavianDamiean yup

7:57 PM
@htorque it's tough work giving away rep
It's way harder than earning it
well, you could do it carelessly
but like, to do it in a way that helps people with the right ratios and whatnot

when i do it, it goes to /dev/null

is hard and fun

i'm not good at picking questions for bounties

the first trick is to check the person's profile and see if they've been around
that saves like, so much wasted effort

7:58 PM
@htorque Basically all questions that have my face on them.

;-)
@OctavianDamiean again, i don't think so. :P

It was worth a try.

jrg
> 15 Earned bounties for 1,450 reputation
Thats a drop in the bucket for Jon Skeet.

is python required to run anything system wise?

jrg
do we have a "how can i burn a ISO to cd via the command line" question?

8:00 PM
jon skeet offered no bounty. what a skinflint! :D :D

if I ax python from the system will anything all of a sudden 'stop working'
assuming nothing is installed or running other than my tty session

@jrg I'm sure we have, if not then @Stefano can definitely provide an answer off-hand. :P

jrg
@rlemon Yeah, it will.
bash autocorrect uses python iirc.
heck, almost everything uses python.

@OctavianDamiean soooo dude leaving me hanging? useful features or no??
:P

I'm still trying to figure out what most of the code does.
I guess what confuses me is the missing Sizzle part.
But I can see that you've added options which is cool. :)
I guess not only Sizzle confuses me but also the runner thing.

8:11 PM
easier for me to remove it later.
Sizzle is there, just in it's own function.

I mean I understand the purpose of the injector function but I have to make a dry run through it to figure it out completely.

guys - I need a quick thumbs up or down - is this a dupe

Q: Which DE to choose?

JohnI have a pretty good HP laptop. I believe it has 6GB of ram and a 2GHz intel i3 processor and won't have trouble with heavy tasks. @fossfreedom i think this has been fixed with an update
the never sleep thing i mean

@fossfreedom I'd say it should be closed as a dupe of that one, yes.

... thanks - I need one more to confirm please

jrg
8:15 PM
@fossfreedom Yes,

@OctavianDamiean jsfiddle.net/rlemon/2gauQ

Ah!
I see.

jsfiddle.net/rlemon/2gauQ/1 <- check this one
baseClass option, I forgot about it.

Oh, that is awesome.

the code needs refining still.. but it is functional as is so I wanted some feedback before I proceed.

8:19 PM
Thumbs up!
Definitely useful.

ok cool.
any other options? should I allow them to define the search parameters? as in; what makes it a char, a line, or a word? or is that kinda overkill

Mhmm, the baseClass option doesn't seem to work.

also, if a element contains html the html is currently lost.
@OctavianDamiean add a comma, there is a typo in the fiddle

Oh my ... how blind I am ...
@rlemon Sounds a bit overkill, yes.

A: How do I completely turn off screensaver and power-management?

htorqueOn an up-to-date 11.10 system this should be fixed (the Never option has been added back to the menu).

8:22 PM
<h1>this is a test <small>of some typesetting.js</small></h1> - small tags are blown away and only the text is read and converted.

@fossfreedom okay? ^^

I'd say that what you currently have is really fine for now.

<h1>ab<em>c</em></h1>

to
<h1>
     <span class="char1">a</span>
     <span class="char2">b</span>
     <em><span class="char3">c</span></em>
</h1>
or
<h1>
     <span class="char1">a</span>
     <span class="char2">b</span>
     <span class="char3">c</span>
</h1>
or even
<h1>
     <span class="char1">a</span>
     <span class="char2">b</span>
     <span class="char3"><em>c</em></span>
</h1>

@Takkat would you mind removing your comment from that question?
it doesn't make sense anymore ;)

which makes sense? what would the average user find more useful?

8:24 PM
@htorque we should close the question as too localized anyway

@htorque oops - I've just re-edited the question to really reflect your answer! ... rollback the answer?

Would a mod be so nice to unfreeze this room?
I'd like to move over to that room so we don't spam the chat with our web development messages. :)

@OctavianDamiean done

Thanks. :)

Q: How to install and update Ubuntu to a Pen drive

Luis AlvaradoI want to install Ubuntu into a pen drive. The pen drive is 16GB and I want to be able to boot from it (Not the LiveCD but the actual installed system) and be able to update and install new packages. At the end I want to be able to have the latest Firefox, Apache, MySQL, PHP installed and an upd...

Duplicate, right?

8:32 PM
@fossfreedom no idea, let's close it like suggested by @Takkat? (but the version that says it's fixed in 11.10 ;))

... I've rolled the answer back - the reason is Jorge wanted a similar 12.04 question to be duplicated against this. If you look at the Q&A now - I think it now is a good question and answer.
@jrg borderline - but I would let it stand as is.

jrg
Ok.

...11 more questions to "answer" to 82% !

jrg
Ahg, only 300MB available on my thumbdrive, and I haven't even installed the build-essentials I need! (side note, what kind of RAID lets me have two drives pretend to be one big drive? RAID 1?)

@fossfreedom yeah, looks fine to me.

8:39 PM
RAID 1 is a mirror - RAID 0 - but you have no redundancy

jrg
RAID 0 is what I'm looking for then. thanks.

... if you've got 3 drives - strongly recommend RAID 5

jrg
only have 2 4GBs, need to make the most of them.

hrm.. I have a few 32GB thumbdrives and a few 16GB thumbdrives sitting around... maybe i'll put ubuntu on one.

jrg
Trust me, it'll be worth it someday.
i'm finding mine incredibly useful. :)
I'll ask if I can borrow dad's 16GB thumbdrive later, depending on how long its going to take for me to get a new drive.

8:47 PM
ugh, i should install the xorg-edgers ppa to confirm a fix, but i don't want to mess up my system :-/

climb up the directory tree faster http://askubuntu.com/questions/110922/climb-up-the-directory-tree-faster #bash

@htorque don't do it ;P

@fossfreedom raid 5 needs a good controller, though.
@Takkat yeah, i've seen what this ppa can do to your system before
plus, ppa-purge doesn't like multiarch

... correct ... I didnt realise James is doing this via thumbdrives

jrg
I must admit, this is rather fun. :P

8:50 PM
I spent 3 days without a working graphics until I reinstalled some time ago...

hehe
"ppa purge by hand" is fun, though :P

blind is more fun...
It was all written with white letters on white background. Very stylish!

9:14 PM
Air collision?

@TheX buy it buy it buy it! they have an iVibe and all other assortments of iSexToys
(not officially endorsed by apple of course)

@rlemon lol

iPorn could be a new big business for you... but don't actually show porn. just show iPods/Tabs/Phones without their covers/cases
oooo look at that sexy lithium battery all hanging out her back end

jrg
@JorgeCastro whats the dupe for that question?

I had it backward
I've fixed it now

Q: How do I install Adobe AIR?

Roland TaylorI found some links, but they all seem a bit unsure, so I'm wondering if it is possible, and looking for simple (if possible) instructions.

is the dupe
even though it's older the answer there is referencing something offsite that could be out of date

9:17 PM
@rlemon good idea!

I can see someones screws

alas, iPorn is taken

Ew.

@jrg silhouettes's you're safe. she is choking on a ear bud and he's helping her, however they both feel forward in the process. what the image captured is the action shot of all this happening.

Well, aint that dandy! Jono Bacon likes us!
Notice he fixed it already in hist post on jonobacon.org @htorque.

what does the at package do

but he made it in the first place. inexcusable!

Oh, never mind.

@htorque cool - related to cron?

yeah, i think so. never used it really.

Hello @All
Got a strange update manager bug

@rlemon Wow O.O how????

@rlemon So its mainly CSS thats awesome

jrg
wait...
I'm going to do something really stupid. I'm going to try and dual boot with USB sticks.

@jrg Want me to pull your finger

jrg
i'm such an idiot.
@Allan nah i'm good.

XD
So my Update manager is Shy is that a bug or a personality disorder??

jrg
10:02 PM
Both.
the personality disorder is a bug.

just keep in mind that usb sticks aren't really made for holding an os (limited write cycles)

jrg
I know, but at most this is for a week.

a week is fine i guess, unless you build kernels on the system 24/7 :D

jrg
crap, arch can't find anything. oh well. back to ubuntu I go. runs back to the welcoming arms of Ubuntu

When my update manager pops in to the dash automatically it won't show its self at all it is in the alt tab menu and everything but it is completely hidden otherwise any one heard of something similar or is it a new bug?

jrg
10:13 PM
@Allan thats a bug.
I had that happening to me all the time for other things.
can't find the bug right now.

might be a good op to test Kazam

tienes mas espanol en PreguntarUbuntu :/
(yes, my spanish is very rusty)

jrg
@htorque no, i do all my compiling on my server now. ;)

Q: How do I install packages without using a package manager?

Grant VeselyI would like to know how to install .deb packages without using a package manager such as dpkg. Is it possible to do this? What files do I have to edit? Or is there a unique procedure for each package?

some questions are just, really, really hard

10:30 PM
... may be hard ... or you can just say ... why ?!

@MarcoCeppi you around yet?

@BrunoPereira easy money.
Except updating the dpkg database.

imho it stops being easy, when you need to install multiple packages that depend on each other
do stuff in the right order, etc.
but really: why would you want to do that?

WooHoo Ubuntu!

@jrg are you testing ondina?

10:43 PM
@rlemon -1 for the old logo :P

adios chaps

ditto
cya

@fossfreedom whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy? oh goodness gracious, why?

@BrunoPereira ... :) ... he has his answer anyway.

@rlemon all css? fancy

11:03 PM
ah finally a block of time
I haven't been able to megaedit in a long time
steel yourselves
/me prepares

oh, god

11:45 PM

@JorgeCastro keep them coming, only 4 open atm

I can already tell our next great cleanup task will be "boots to black screen" questions.
