@FaheemMitha fine. Yep, the company paid for some basic training before going to Japan, and now I still have Japanese class every day here.

Working on Cassandra for now

Yep. NoSQL database. Java, but it's nice to contribute to open-source stuff

@muru So you're doing development stuff?

@FaheemMitha for now, yes. They've assigned me assorted issues reported on Cassandra's issue tracker. They may move into deploying Cassandra sometime in the coming months, though

@muru So software development and admin, then. You're weren't interested in research, presumably.

But three years being and admin for my dept makes it easier to get admin jobs :D

Yes, it doesn't seem to be unusual here (I was surprised when I first heard it too)

Huh. That could be brutal. Doing a PhD is no fun, all by itself.

Though it does depend on a lot of factors, not least of which is your adviser.

A senior will be trying this year, so I'll see how his experience will be
